      Shouldnt it be mu-torrent?

      Actually, I was never quite sure how to pronounce it. I thought it was mu because that's how this letter is pronounced in Greek. Why microtorrent, though? Where does micro come from?

      Veselin Krastev That's intersting. Years and years ago I used to run μtorrent on a really old Windows XP computer. And it was the ONLY program than ran smoothly and didn't crash.

      copyright law is a very complicated issue but basicly if it remotely looks like a copyright things of a major company then you can bet on that major company going after whoever is profitting off and/or getting attention becuase of it.
      If that is actual breaking of the copyright law depends on which lawyer you pay to find what kind of exploit or loophole in the law to allow your side to be right under the law.

    Man, I love official torrents; like when game developers offer their games through a torrent download instead of a direct download. You get the convenience of being able to pause and/or throttle the download if you need more bandwidth at the moment. For somebody like me, who's download peak is ~250-300 KB/s with *very* low bandwidth, being able to pause the download during the day and resume it during times when I won't be active on the network is great. Not to mention that torrents are usually faster for me than direct downloads.

    BitTorrent is a really, REALLY great technology. Imagine the server is on the other side of the world, instead of that someone from the other side of the world seeded, someone who was closer to you downloaded it and seeds again, you download data from 2 sources at once, you share your data for other people, also, even if there would be one seed closer to you than a server and it would have the same internet speed as the server, it would download faster with the closer seed.

    Over 98% of the games I played were downloaded/torrented/bought pirated copies. The other 2% were legitimately bought games like Max Payne 3 and soon, GTA V for PC. Piracy is also the reason why I not only become a PC elitist but also concentrated on Singleplayer.

    Good video, I'll throw in my two cents though. I have used torrents to try out games, if I like the game I buy it and delete the file I downloaded completely(except for save files sometimes). I am the proud owner of over 160 games in steam, a lot which I would not have bought if I had not been able to try the full version first. A company puts out a crap game should not be able to get my money to keep so i try it first, a movie that is horrible to me is in the same category, why should that production company get to keep my money......but if it is good then I do give them my money and actually purchase the product. Leaching is sometimes needed because ISP's won't mind their damn business and just take my money monthly like they should and will threaten you for doing such things, if it is something an ISP will not bother you about then seed like your growing a farm, but thats not usually the case.

      I do the same thing with games, except in the rare case that the game was made by a small company (that accepts donations) and produced by somebody like EA or Activision, I'll get the game through 'nefarious methods', then donate the price of it to the game devs. I do this for small companies that I want to help by making sure they get 100% of the money I spent on it (plus, I *really* hate EA and want to avoid giving them my money).

    • @Zambito1

      Zambito1 The main reason I don't like EA is Origin. I have literally never heard anybody say anything good about Origin. It's always tacked on as a "but" when talking about games (i.e. "The Sims 4 is pretty cool, but you have to use Origin..." - Markiplier)
      Also, I don't know what Ubisoft has done recently, as I don't stay up to date on video game news.

    • @Zambito1
      @Zambito1 9 лет назад

      ***** The one thing I like that Origin does right that Steam sucks at is customer support. Also everyone has been hating Ubisoft for Watch Dogs being downgraded on PC to match console graphics, Uplay NEEDING internet access even for single player games, The recent Assassins Creed title being locked at 30 fps to "feel cinematic", and being buggy as hell.

    leeches aren't much of an issue with legal content, it is illegal content that gets people to remove it as soon as it is done. a vpn fixes the issue, but uploading as a seeder is certain to get you an email from your isp.

    • @Diablos199
      @Diablos199 10 лет назад +8

      depending on the country you live. In greece for example none will come to you cause u download illegal stuff. Including ripped movies and cracked games etc. Leechers are an issue to small and yet not that "healthy" torrents. When its new and there are 5-10 seeders you cant just delete the torrent. We had once a greek torrent site called gamato.com (in english means cool or awesome). It was closed and reopened as a .it and they transefered the servers again till it was gone for good. There the torrents were available for members only (with free signing) and were mostly for greeks (even though anyone could sign). And cause we had smaller torrents and less seeders i kept seeding. I downloaded about 300-400GB and uploaded OVER 1TB with ADSL. Yes it was over some years though but i did it cause we were a relatively small community based on worldwide sites like TPB. My theory is that once you download a torrent let it seed untill you upload its size at least 1 time. But with big torrents with 2-3k seeders i rly dont see any reason for someone with less upload speed to NOT be a leecher.

      WayZHC Yeah... In Romania, when someone from my ISP came to change my router for one that could handle 1000 Mbps he saw that I was seeding a lot of torrents and instead of telling me that it's illegal and I could get arrested, he asked me if I could invite him on Filelist (the biggest private tracker in Romania)... So yeah.

  • @4sh3n47
    @4sh3n47 Год назад +10

    also, to be a seeder (active node) you need to have some ports forwarded on your router. if you don't, then you will only be uploading to those active nodes, which are people who most likely already have the file. and your download speed will also decrease w/o those ports being open. this especially sucks for people behind an isp nat, who can't open those isp-side ports (XD)

    How does it split data between computers?
    1. I came here to see it seeding uses HDD a lot and if it will get worn out. Lets say one pc askes for download from another, it goes one way. But if 2 pc ask for download from one, and lets say one paused download at 50% and the other is starting brom begining, if they both get some downloading, is the seeder PC uploading files from multiple RANDOM places at once? Also if 100 pc connect to 5 seeders, thats 20 per seeder, is his hdd getting huge workload
    2. Does reading files wear out HDD? Or is it just writing?

  • @frollard
    @frollard 10 лет назад +9

    Everything in the first 2/3 of the episode was describing kazaa/napster. The important (differentiating) part of bittorrent is that it breaks files into chunks and treats each of those chunks like pages of a book. The server (seeder) only uploads page 1/x until it starts seeing page 1 out in the wild...once it knows other users are sharing page 1, it moves on to page 2, etc. This ensures that leechers don't kill the torrent by taking the first whole copy.

    How well could I expect a torrent to work if I just wanted to privately seed a few rather large files over to a single peer? I ask because I do collaborations with a friend where we both record our own perspectives of a game we play, but one of us has to send the other the videos to be edited, and as such most other file-sharing solutions are not terribly good. Skype has a tendency to drop the transfers, and they’re way too big for my Dropbox, so I’m curious how much better a torrent would perform, assuming we don’t try to leech each other for some stupid reason.

    I'm writing this just as I heard the leecher part. I should be considered one, i have an internet connection speed of 1,2mb/s Download and around 600-700 Upload if I'm not wrong. My whole NETWORK is cut into 3. So we have one router directly connected to one PC and the less is through Wi-Fi, lets to some math and we get 3 PC's with an OVERALL download speed of 1.2mb/s thats 400kb/s each and less than 200 Upload speed. Not everyone has a 250mb/s connection or Google Fiber.

    In eastern Europe torrents don't have a bad name at all. In fact, they are mostly the norm. You use them when you want to try out a game or watch a movie that you missed in the cinemas. You 'muricans could afford to buy every game on steam that releases on steam, and spend 10$ every other day to go to the cinema, but not everyone has that luxury when one game is a tenth of your salary.
    And don't tell me that I'm hurting the game studios I like by not buying their games. If I really like a game, I would always save some money and buy it, same goes for good movies.
    *By downloading games first, to see if they are worth the money I'm supporting the studios I like, and not giving money to ones I don't.*

    • @garyp3472

      Eastern Europeans are generally known by the rest of the word as thieves, we just dont say it when you're around to avoid hurting youre feelings. Upsetsomeone in the Balkans and we can have another world was on ou hands, all cause they cant take a fucking joke, so that might help explain it and oops, i feel like i said sopmething i wasnt supposed to.

      There's might not be any proof, that's because the program is closed source, nobody can read the source code to find out. So it could be sending information to copyright/DMCA enforcers without you knowing. That's why it's best to use an open source client like Transmission, Deluge, or QBittorent, that way the developer can't sneak anything into the code to breach your privacy.
