- Shaker Aamer was the last British resident of Guantanamo Bay. Speaking to the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme, he describes what it was like to be held without trial for nearly 14 years. Aamer was held over extremely serious claims - that he had led a Taliban unit and met Osama Bin Laden. The US military classified him as a threat, but he was never charged. His lawyers say the case against him came from unreliable allegations extracted during torture, and that his treatment at the US military base in Cuba raises serious questions about the legality and morality of the so-called war on terror. A spokesperson said the UK government "stands firmly against torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment" The US Department of Defense said in a statement it "does not tolerate the abuse of detainees. All credible allegations of abuse are thoroughly investigated, and appropriate disciplinary action is taken when those allegations are substantiated."

To face such trauma and torture for 14 years and to keep your patience, dignity and belief every second of those 14 years is truly something to behold. I dare say we all would have been driven to despair and madness in the same situation. I am glad you did not take their bate and act as anyone of us would have had the right to act in such circumstances. I get enraged when someone wastes 10 seconds of my time in a queue or at work let alone 14 years in such savage conditions. You are and example and inspiration to Humanity.

First, I want to thank Shaker Aamer for doing this long interview. It must have been very hard at times. I admire your courage, and I know that you must feel so strongly for those still there who are innocent. I found this very hard to watch, very hard to hear of your suffering. I wish your wife and children and you peace, and courage, and a long life surrounded with love, and that you see that place close. "Close Guantanamo and close the secret sites NOW!" so says this old English woman...
And I'm sure there are a lot more other places that we don't know about that not even Google maps catches or shows us !

This is 💔 14 years of torture. I’am a British Indian, born into a Hindu family, but my family is so multicultural it’s beautiful (born in 🇬🇧) & hearing this Muslim gentleman - Sir out of respect as he’s much older than me. Can see nothing, but the truth in his eyes. Not only he suffered, but his wife & children here. This whole family need to be paid a LARGE compensation, from the taxes we pay. Not that it will make all the pain go away, BUT our taxes go towards horrific thing’s. If rather all my families taxes from our monthly pay, go to his family. They need a break, this time to shut down, to wind down, relax & spend quality time with his family. I’am 32 I have a 13 year old son & 10 year old daughter. IF I was in this situation & told they have my spouse, child, family ohhh I’d do anything they ask me to do. No matter how horrific lies I’d have to falsely agree to. This man is a threat they say, why he has a beard & long hair. I recently went through some serious struggles, through pandemic my own blood didn’t help. Yet when a Muslim lady (stranger) happened to find out. I was blown away the way not only herself, but her husband & family help us daily for the last 3 years. I’am under the care of LOROS on bed rest. They not once saw our religion, they didn’t ask if we need help. They used their brain & knew of course they need help. She’s on bedrest, husband 2 jobs with 2 children who are young carers. Waiting as every second passing if it’ll be my last breath. They drop a hot home cooked healthy meal (dinner) for my family EVERYDAY. Not only that I not only got told ppl who went to mosque to pray, got told about me, my family & our struggles & daily life by the priest. Without using names etc keeping us confidential, but they were asked to pray for this sister (me) & her family (husband & kids). I did know, but we got a call from my husbands cousin in Manchester whom has a Muslim girlfriend & he said, guy’s millions are praying for you. The news has traveled globally. My girlfriend heard your story even from abroad. We burst into tears & said to a local priest what can we do? Please accept this & donate towards the needy. He said, why not? Because your not Muslim? Your human & it says in our holy bible help anyone in your power as much as we can from our hearts, for nothing in return. Even not a thank you sister in return, because we did & will do from the heart & pray for a miracle for you to survive. That day we changed our will legally, that if anything happens to me, spouse etc every penny will go to certain mosques who collect whatever when the men go to pray. To build schools for girls, offer sanitary for girls, teach them English to have a shit in life they only dream of. Even our children said please leave nothing for us, we will work because we can & have a choice here, they don’t & need it more than us. We will also try to join unicef when older to help because we want to. I cried that the kids were smiling ear to ear to know we’re signing all over to good causes & not them 🙏🏼♥️🧿 Not question, bitter about it etc. So proud, I’d love to meet this brothers family so much. However if you read this, I want to say sorry for every you & your family endured from the funding of our taxes we pay. I was very touching man. Unfortunately for him, he is interviewed by someone who has no interest in shedding light on his story or plight, but in forwarding a bunch of incriminating questions meant only to reinforce the suspecthood that has haunted him for 14 years. I am ABSOLUTELY APPALLED at +BBC News for the censorship in this video. The extremely loud static has hurt my ears and I am unsure over whether or not this was intentional. Money will not change what happened and isn't even close to somehow giving the illusion of justice. He is a gentle soul, and also, we have witnessed that when former detainees do receive money as compensation - they still receive negative and slanderous accusations. What insanity , how can human beings do this to other human beings? It is absolutely sick and it compares to what Gestapo did in the past. I can't believe that torture and prisons like this still exist.
Six years after this interview, nothing has changed, and the Guantanamo prison has not been closed so far, and hundreds or thousands of Muslims are still detained unjustly and falsely inside without any charge and with the collusion of the governments of Muslim countries and Western governments that call for democracy and justice , The only consolation for our imprisoned brothers is that if these unjust infidels escape from punishment in this life, they will not escape from judgment and punishment on the Day of judgment ☝🏼☝🏼
That makes me sad, powerful people can be so cruel and can easily get away with their crimes, Allah will surely make justice in the day of Judgement…

It seems like this bbc interviewer spent 14 years of guantanamo Bay instead of shakir. She looks upset and no feelings even after hearing this heart breaking story of shakir . He is such a brave man . US always failed as usual and they never be successful in their hideous crimes against humanity. Shame on USA !

14 years. How does one accept that, forgive and come to terms with it.
