Barnsley sealed promotion to the Championship as two goals in the first 19 minutes set up their League One play-off final win over Millwall.
Ashley Fletcher slotted home after just 88 seconds, before Adam Hammill's 25-yard curling shot doubled the lead.
Both had scored for Barnsley in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy final win over Oxford at Wembley eight weeks earlier.
Mark Beevers fired in Millwall's reply from close range but Lloyd Isgrove's header secured Barnsley's victory.
The Tykes were bottom of League One in December but a superb run of form under interim boss Paul Heckingbottom saw them finish sixth in the table, and their two-year exile from the Championship was ended by wins over Walsall and Millwall in the play-offs.
Millwall were forced into a late change before kick-off when centre-back Byron Webster was injured in the warm-up, with Tony Craig taking his place.
A mix-up in the Lions defence from a long ball allowed Fletcher to take advantage, as the on-loan Manchester United forward held off Carlos Edwards and fired across Jordan Archer into the bottom corner.
The south London side lacked composure and cohesion in the opening 25 minutes, and Barnsley capitalised again when Hammill cut in from the left and bent an exquisite shot into the top corner without being challenged.
Beevers' close-range finish reduced the deficit but the second half was a scrappy affair with few clear-cut chances, and Millwall could not recover from their poor start.
Millwall had been looking to secure an immediate return to the second tier but boss Neil Harris, in his first full season in charge, will have to pick up his squad for another promotion bid next season, having finished fourth in the table.
Barnsley looked comfortable on their second visit of the season to the national stadium, having suffered just one defeat since mid-March to reach the play-offs.
With Millwall increasingly playing the ball long in the second period, it was the Yorkshire side who made the crucial breakthrough, as goalkeeper Archer failed to collect Conor Hourihane's corner and Isgrove headed into an empty net.
The Tykes looked more likely to score a fourth in the closing stages, although Chris Taylor forced Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies into a late save.
With 13 victories in 21 games, winning the club's first cup final since 1912 and now winning promotion to the Championship, Heckingbottom has made a strong case to take charge on a more permanent basis.
The 38-year-old - part of the Barnsley squad promoted from the third tier in 2006 - built on work done by Lee Johnson, who left Oakwell for Bristol City in February.
It's a testament to the love the English have for football that regardless of what league level the match is in, the passion and dedication of the fans and the atmosphere in the stadium is always incredible.
Barnsley had a class side for league one
They had a pretty good side for the Championship too, they just did what they always do and sold off the players the moment bigger teams came sniffing round, but they were looking at maybe a playoff place the season after until the January window that next season.
Isgroves reaction is just so genuine, sheer joy
If Ronaldo did that Hammil goal...
You’d never hear the end
Big Man Olsticks they would talk about it for years whereas down in league 1 it’s only talked about for the day
Adam Hammill's goal was just sheer quality! :)
Matty Hugill I know
This achievement was remarkable for several reasons. Initially, the Barnsley team had been struggling, securing only one win in ten games from October to November. This streak included eight consecutive losses, leaving them just one point above the bottom of the table, with only Blackpool and Crewe having fewer points at that stage of the season. However, after their Boxing Day game against Bury was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, they embarked on a seven-game winning streak that propelled them up the standings. Amidst this streak, they lost their manager Lee Johnson, who was recruited by Bristol City after they dismissed Steve Cotterill. Consequently, Paul Heckingbottom was elevated from the development team to serve as caretaker manager, a role he had previously held the season before following the abrupt termination of Danny Wilson's second tenure at Oakwell. Heckingbottom's leadership saw the team lose only twice as they advanced to the playoffs, decisively defeated Walsall in the semi-finals, and then triumphed over Millwall in the final. Additionally, he secured the EFL Trophy during this period. As caretaker managerial stints go, this was undoubtedly one of the most successful ever.
Barnsley 1-0 Millwall (Fletcher 2’) 2:53
Barnsley 2-0 Millwall (Hammill 19’) 5:59
Barnsley 2-1 Millwall (Beevers 34’) 7:42

"Championship is glad to have them." By the way the referees have tried to keep us down thats a strange thing to think now. Hopefully we can leave them all behind and again sneak the playoffs

I have been a Barnsley fan, for most of my life. I went to my 1st Barnsley F.C. football match, when I was 7 years old. I can call myself a lifelong fan, of Barnsley F.C., because I know a lot of about them, too.
Seven of these players not with the club anymore.....
David Wake sadly 😪 but we have Moore

Sunderland have never won at Wembley and failed in May. We won here in 2016 and beat them to promotion this year. You reds!!!
That's just not true but ok
1937, coming from behind to beat Preston 3-1 in the FA Cup Final.
1973, Jim Montgomery in goal, winning the FA Cup as a Second Division side against Leeds 1-0 in one of the biggest shocks in English Cup history.
