Great Review Mark - you made my decision easy! I've used the RSC2 and its just heavy after a few hours at events (I will still keep for more demanding projects). I bought the M2S and was able to successfully balance a Sony aSiii with 28-70 lens and 17-28 and it worked just fine in my filming tests and held. I'm pumped to try the time lapse. Cheers.
For the extra features and ergonomics of the controls on the handle, I would prefer the M3. And it will work with my Nikon Z5 for balance as this model is on its list of compatible cameras. thanks for this comparison, was looking for a more travel friendly gimbal that is versatile enough to mount a phone, action camera right through to a light mirrorless setup. I think ill go for the M2S (since I already have the weebill S for heavier mirrorless payloads that I use for work)

It works in controlled settings but if your movement is too quick it shuts down. Also the vortex mode and potrait mode both wouldnt work, it cant handle the weight. Awesome review! I have a Panasonic G85 and purchased the Weebill S, only to find out they are not compatible and the camera cannot be controlled from the gimbal. Now, I am shopping for another gimbal. Do you know if the M2S will work with the Panasonic G85, especially to start and stop video recording from the gimbal?
Nice video though i would have wanted to see what cameras & lenes could go on the M2s. The scorp mini awesome gimbal but can't manage the weight of the Canon RP as much. Point is knowing what camera could go unto these things would be a big help when buying.
@MarkWiemels , Can you expand a bit more more on the cable compatibility part? I have the Sony ZV E10. To confirm, the crane M3 can not control this camera? Can the m2s handle the ZVe10 with the Sigma 18- 50 m/ 2.8? Thanks so much!
Thanks for another great video. Have you tried the M3's touch screen's visibility in bright sunlight, i.e. skiing/snowboarding, mountaineering (or the beach), etc.? Is it easy to see, and work with, while having goggles or sunglasses on? Thank you.
I had high Hope's for the M3. It seemed to fix all of the issues experienced with the M2. Supposedly designed with upgraded motors for more mirrorless cameras and various lens combos. I bought one and found the M3 to be ultra sensitive and beep and error out with Canon M50 and kit lens. Even worse with Sigma 16mm. Despite many attempts to balance it, having watched loads of videos and balanced properly, it still was very prone to error out, motor vibrate and refuse to calibrate. Perhaps just a bad unit but in the end I sent it back. I will buy again later down the road when issues have been ironed out, but the M3 was not the solution I thought it was..not at this stage anyways
That’s so disappointing to hear. My production copy is very stable, even with the sigma 16mm, but my preproduction beta copy had similar issues to yours. Just out of curiosity, did you try updating the firmware?
@@markwiemels Hey Mark. Yes I did that too but it made no difference. I balanced the M50, Sigma 16mm, Rode wireless go and VND filter on the M2 with no issues. Even made a video about it. I think its just a duff unit. Loved everything about it and even got the M50 quick release plate. Thought it was the cure for battery changes without rebalance and with lights and touch screen was a real step forward. I've seen your video and others sporting the M50 and Sigma 16mm combo and thought great that the one. Sadly there are still issues to iron out Mark. I even set the motors to high torque but every time you switch off and then recalibrate it resets to medium and errors out.🤨
@@RaySuesTravelChannel no, but I did work out, with that unit, the vibration was caused by some play in the base that slides up and down, and also attaches to the base plate that goes on the camera. Even when I made it as tight as I could, there was some play in there that cause vibration and a buzz, and eventual shut down. Took me a while to work out, as I was sure it was cranked down hard, but eventually realised I could still wiggle it. I think I’m also running my motors at minimum power, on my production unit now.
My M3 isn't charging my Sony ZV 1. I have the correct cable connecting the camera to the M3. I can start and stop recording using the M3, but for some reason, the M3 is not charging the camera. Must be a settings issue? I've tried a couple of different settings, but no luck yet. Suggestions? We are going to Europe soon and I'd like the gimbal charging the camera so I don't have to change batteries every half hour.
Nice video. I got a ZVe10 and I seach for a nice gimbal now. Both options, M3 and M2S look nice but I wonder if zoom can destabilize the gimbal. I have the kit lens 16-50. Not a big zoom. Will it work?

Great analysis! I had a M2S briefly, and I could not balance my Fuji X-T200 with a wide angle X10-24mm lens. Do you think the M3 would balance a longer/heavier lens like the 10-24mm? Wonder if Best Buy has display models where you can see if it would balance prior to buying? Thanks again!
It’s a good question, so far I have been able to clean it back to looking like new, but the surface is textured, so I’m not sure if there could be an issue long term or not. So far mine is ok.
Love your videos Mark! Right now both models are on sale on Amazon. M3: $295 and M2s: $240. I'm really torn. I have the Sony a6400 and I'm just starting to get into videography. Which one would you recommend?
100% M3, no question, it's a much more premium gimbal for that small price difference. Check my affiliate link before you buy, it might be the best price.
Mark, Thanks for taking the time to put together this informative video! Do you know if the Crane M3 can be used with the Canon M50 along with a SmallRig cage attached? I had contacted the company and waiting for a reply.
I assume you are just talking about the stop/start video function? if so, I wouldn't be too worried about that, I hardly use that function myself. It's just a matter of pushing the button on the camera, rather than one on the gimbal. Until very recently no gimbals even had this function, including the ones uses to make Hollywood movies, so it's not a big deal. The other Gimbal to check out would be the Weebill S, not sure if that will function with the G9, but it's another good gimbal.
Personally I would. I know the M6 Mark II gets full range of motion, even with the Sigma 16mm, I have yet to test the M2S with that setup. The M2S allows you to start and stop video with the cable, which the M2S does not, but thats not a big deal to me.
The GH4 isn't on the compatibility list of the Crane M2S, you may have a look: zhiyun-website-shenzhen.oss-cn-shenzhen.aliyuncs.com/instruction/20220825/1661414049713-KnXfPH8N.pdf
Very comprehensive video on the M2S and M3, Mark. Thank you. Just curious, how do you balance the M2S with Gopro 11 (with media mod) and Ulanzi GP4 magnetic quick release. I can't balance those combo. However, I can balance the combo without the media mod. Can you please share your technique?
I dont have that setup, but make sure you are adjusting the "up and down" adjustment. There are 4 points of adjustment, make sure you are doing them all, some people miss the up and down one, I have a video about balancing the m2s.
Hi Mark, fantastic review...I was all set on the M3 but now not sure. Which would be most compatible and be able to balance with a Fujifilm X-S10 using a 16-80 lens? Really appreciate your thoughts. I am amazed at how responsive you are to your commenters!
There is a compatibility list on the Zhiyun website, and I doubt either gimbal will be rated by them to handle that setup. You might be able to get it to work with the M3, there is no way the M2S would do it. That setup is really best on the Weebill S.
I have the Sony ZV E10 and plan to shoot with the Sigma 16mm lens mostly. Is the M2S strong enough to work with that setup? Or should I go M3? And why is the ZV E10 compatible with the M2S record button but not the M3 record button?
Both will do the job. It’s just a matter of what features you want, and budget, that was really the purpose of this video. If your just doing vlogging and travel vids, you can go the M2S and I don’t think you will be missing out.
I returned it. It's too complicated and just takes too much time and effort to put it together and start filming. and when I do something always goes wrong, I spend more time trying to figure it out and calibrate it than actually using it.
@@jjenningsoh LOL, the spirit was willing but his patience weak. He bought more gimbal than he was ready to commit to. When he's ready, it will be there.
Thanks for the comparison. I believe they both lock on all axis when balancing, but besides is the time to balance on both of these t=about the same amount of time?
Very well described! Also, question - I own a Sony a6400 and use it with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. Would you possibly have any idea if the M2S would support this lens? It’s the best option for my budget currently, but I’m worried about the balance.
No, the Weebill S is probably the smallest gimbal that would handle that camera, depending on the lens choice. The Weebill 2 is bigger yet, but still small in professional gimbal terms, and is very good, but more expensive.
Can the m3 balance a Sony A6400 with a Sigma 16mm F 1.4 lens? I jumped the gun and went with the M2S, but i think the lens is too heavy and can't get it to balance properly
M3 is better, M2S is smaller, lighter, cheaper and still good. M3 is the most premium small gimbal I have ever see, the build is much better than the M2S.
Hello Mark. I was looking to buy M2 which is still available, but then I came across M2S. I am going to use it with Sony A5100. It is mentioned as compatible for M2 and not listed for M2S. Do you think it is still likely to work with M2S? Thank you
Curious how you'd compare the M2S vs the Weebill S? I know the Weebill 2 is much more improved over the Weebill S... But at a price point, M2S and Weebill S are fairly comparable and interested to hear how you'd compare the two and which you'd consider a "better bang for the buck"?
Totally different gimbals really. You can’t beat the value of the Weebill S right now, but it’s a much bigger gimbal, I would only go with the Weebill S if you need the extra capacity. If you do, it’s a fabulous gimbal.
@@markwiemels We're actually shooting on a Canon M50, so I think we'll be good with the M2S then, until we decide to upgrade our gear. Thanks for the response!
I looked at the M2S camera compatibility list because I want put a Nikon Z5 on it with the new 28mm F2.8 Z lens - I can see its fully compatible but no idea what the weight limit or lens compatibility is.
The reason they are using the lists now, is that the motors are so strong that the weight is not the limiting factor. The limiting factor is the effective size of the area that the lens and body can fit in, and still have full range of motion. This will also change based on how the camera and lens balance. So it’s a bit more complicated than just a simple weight limit. So the list, or testing it yourself, is the only way to know.
@@markwiemels thanks - I see - I got it I kind of guessed the pancake or shorter length lenses are probably going to work with it. Thanks for the reply
Hi Mark, great rundown of the two gimbals. I myself have a M50 and was watching to see what would suit my needs better. As someone who has never owned a gimbal, I'm leaning towards the M2S as a beginner. But the one thing that I need advice on is the weighting of the camera and the gimbal's performance. I plan on using Canon's original EF-M 11-22mm lens (and potentially some more weighty lenses in the future) and was wondering whether the M2S would perform well still. As the lens is not exactly flat, nor is it short, I wanted to know whether with the M2S's small tripod legs would be able to balance the M50 with a longer lens attached (by longer I mean not short like a pancake lens). I saw a review on amazon saying their Sony A7III with a longer lens could not be balanced properly unless tilted at a specific angle on the M2S and he was worried the weight of the camera + lens would cause strain to the M2S motors. May I know your thoughts? Thanks
@@Callomir neither are rated to work with the sigma 16mm. The Sigma 16mm does work, without full range of motion, on the M3, I have done a video about it. I have not tested the 16mm on the M2S, will try to do it and publish a quick short video.
@@Callomir just tried to balance the 16mm on the M2S, I couldn’t get it to balance. There isn’t enough space, the M3 is just that little bit bigger to make it “sort of” work. Keep in mind the M3 is still not rated by Zhiyun to handle the 16mm. The Weebill S is, it is an excellent gimbal, but it’s bigger and a bit more expensive.
@@markwiemels Thank you for testing that out for me. I'm in no rush to get both the gimbal and lens atm as it is very pricey. But I just thought for future sake, especially since the SIGMA 16mm does not have IS, a gimbal would be more effective at keeping shots or footage steady. Thanks once again, I will check out the Weebill S.
When the M2 was released it was $269 as well. They have discontinued the M2 now, so the ones for sale now will be the last ones available (or so I’m told by Zhiyun)
Both work well. With the M3 you get better build quality and a more robust gimbal, if budget is a concern, go for the M2s, but the M3 is worth the extra money if its within your budget.
My first consideration is the payload. That's because having a gimbal with more power than you'll need adds to better reliability. I always prefer some headroom between camera weight and maximum payload. With the M3, I have a lot more latitude. My second consideration is audio. And that's because its good audio that distinguishes amateur from professional. As for hand-held weight, I workout, so the weight of the slightly beefier M3 is insignificant to me.
Mark, WEIRD QUESTION: When I follow your link to the M3 on Amazon its listed for $367 BUT if I scroll down there's a couple listed for $295. Is there a difference? Bo
As long as they are both the "Standard" kit, then they will be the same. There is also a Combo kit, which includes the phone holder, upgraded tripod foot, and bag, and it's more. When I check the link I provided the listing has a tick box for a $74 discount, which makes the price the same, they may have just added that based on the other pricing.
@@markwiemels if im not mistaken , the zhiyun app supports tracking i think , and most of the features are in the gimbal itself , and the camera system's integration is mostly the control cable to the gimbal
@@archfxt3619 I think it’s a bit more complicated than that. There are two different apps, one for the phone gimbals and one for the camera gimbals, and not all features work on all gimbals. I wish it was a little more straightforward.
There are two adjustments that effect this. The front to back adjustment, and the up and down adjustment, they are working together on the same axis. The location of the thread for the clamp will have no real effect on the balance. I mean, it’s possible that you have a phone that is outside to the ability for the gimbal to balance. Do you have the up and down slider in its lowest position?
@@markwiemels do you have a Instagram or twitter I can send you pictures? I tried adjusting the plates to both their max positions and it’s still leaning too heavy
Best problem with the m2s is all the marketing has imagery of a sony a7III or similar, except it doesn't work with it 100%. And won't work with many lenses

For someone starting to look into gimbals, it would be nice if you cut to e.g. a turntable shot of both… so we can see the differences in the hardware
Hi Thank you for your another really well done video. Do you think that M2S can work with the Sony A7Cr and a Sony 20-70 zoom? it is a 1100 grams set.
Check Zhyiun's Website, they have a list, it's a PDF file with all the details.
Yes the M2S will, says so on compatibility list - but not the M3.
@@DungarooTV Thanks for the response.
MyRX100 works fantastic. It’s so light it is very easy to balance.
Nice video though i would have wanted to see what cameras & lenes could go on the M2s. The scorp mini awesome gimbal but can't manage the weight of the Canon RP as much. Point is knowing what camera could go unto these things would be a big help when buying.
Hi Mark, I am thinking of getting the crane M2S for my Canon M50 II. Will it be OK with the smallrig cage. Thanks!😊
Excellent review!
Thanks Mark. How about with the combo Sony ZV-E10 and lens sigma 18-50mm f2.8, Does crane M2S handle? Tks
Thanks! I always enjoy your videos!
Any chance of a video comparing the M2 to the M2S? It's also a $100 difference 🙂 Not sure what to get for my M6 II
Unfortunately not, the M2 is being discontinued, so I don't have access to one. The ones for sale now should be gone very shortly.
They are doing a lot of good stuff over there.
Yes, they just won some German design awards for the M3 and X5 gimbals.
great video ❤
@MarkWiemels , Can you expand a bit more more on the cable compatibility part? I have the Sony ZV E10. To confirm, the crane M3 can not control this camera? Can the m2s handle the ZVe10 with the Sigma 18- 50 m/ 2.8? Thanks so much!
Thanks for another great video. Have you tried the M3's touch screen's visibility in bright sunlight, i.e. skiing/snowboarding, mountaineering (or the beach), etc.?
Is it easy to see, and work with, while having goggles or sunglasses on? Thank you.
I have not, but I have not noticed any issues in my use so far.
Nice review! But is it programmable via app? For set movements for timelapses, for example
The M3 should be, not sure about the M2S.
I even set the motors to high torque but every time you switch off and then recalibrate it resets to medium and errors out.🤨
@@RaySuesTravelChannel yes, that’s not great, what a bummer.
@@markwiemels Mark you said you had those issues on the pre production model. Did you manage to iron them out?
Yes, it should be fine.
Hi ,
Can use Crane M2S gimbal for my Sony a6400 with sigma 16 mm lens ?
I'm not sure, I don't have that camera to test it.
Is someone using it with panasonic s5? Does it work?
what is the weight limit? can I use the Crane M2S with the canon m6 mark ii and the sigma 16mm lens?
I will try and test this for an upcoming video. Zhiyun does not list the sigma 16 on their list of compatible camera lens combos.
@@markwiemels that would be great, I always struggle to find if these gimbals are compatible with the sigma 16 mm. Thanks :)

The M3 is much more powerful, so possibly.
Does the white parts in these gimbals get dirty overtime?
Yes is can, I have a video about this.
@@markwiemels Many thanks for the information!
Looks like neither of these will work with my LUMIX G9. Bummer! Do you have another gimbal option you recommend for the LUMIX?
I assume you are just talking about the stop/start video function? if so, I wouldn't be too worried about that, I hardly use that function myself. It's just a matter of pushing the button on the camera, rather than one on the gimbal. Until very recently no gimbals even had this function, including the ones uses to make Hollywood movies, so it's not a big deal. The other Gimbal to check out would be the Weebill S, not sure if that will function with the G9, but it's another good gimbal.
Nice video, really helpful! What would you recommend if the M3 was only $50 more than the M2s? Using canon m6 mkii with sigma lenses.
Personally I would. I know the M6 Mark II gets full range of motion, even with the Sigma 16mm, I have yet to test the M2S with that setup. The M2S allows you to start and stop video with the cable, which the M2S does not, but thats not a big deal to me.
You haven't talked about the need to rebalance it every time the camera is removed
Not sure whats the new firmware update of the M3 but does it support the ZV-E10 already for start/stop video with cable?
No, still can't control Sony ZV-E10 via control cable.
M2S could work with GH4 and kit lens 14-42 mm? That is what I use mostly for now.
@@markwiemels Thank you Mark. Weebil S incoming. Appreciate the knowledge.
Looking at both of these for use with Cannon eos r6 with 16MM and dji wireless mic. Which would you prefer leaning to the M3
I would go the M3.
Does it support the GH5 or the G9?
I think it would, but you should check the Zhiyun website.
I have the Sony ZV E10 and plan to shoot with the Sigma 16mm lens mostly. Is the M2S strong enough to work with that setup? Or should I go M3? And why is the ZV E10 compatible with the M2S record button but not the M3 record button?
I'm not sure, I think the M2S will, but he the M3 should for sure.
Considering the M3 and the M2, which one would you recommend for using the Sony A7C with the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G lens?
Both will do the job. It’s just a matter of what features you want, and budget, that was really the purpose of this video. If your just doing vlogging and travel vids, you can go the M2S and I don’t think you will be missing out.
I returned it. It's too complicated and just takes too much time and effort to put it together and start filming. and when I do something always goes wrong, I spend more time trying to figure it out and calibrate it than actually using it.
Sounds like self doubt snd impatience is the issue. Try returning that instead?
@@jjenningsoh LOL, the spirit was willing but his patience weak. He bought more gimbal than he was ready to commit to. When he's ready, it will be there.
Thanks for the comparison. I believe they both lock on all axis when balancing, but besides is the time to balance on both of these t=about the same amount of time?
Yes, I'm not finding any real difference there.
Very well described! Also, question - I own a Sony a6400 and use it with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. Would you possibly have any idea if the M2S would support this lens? It’s the best option for my budget currently, but I’m worried about the balance.
I suspect it won't, but don't have the camera to test it. The M3 would be more likely to work.
Hey Mark, Can you tell me what camera and lens you use for this video?:-)
This was shot on the Fujfilm X-T-3 and X-T4, with the 16mm f1.4 and 23mm f2.
Hello, El zhiyun crane M2s es compatible con la canon R50?
@@HellenLee-yz2oj gracias
Where can I get the wireless camera control module for the M3 gimble...?? No one seems to talk about it..
I have not been able to find it either. Some of my views have bought off Amazon in their country.
did I skip, but can you make a device balance presets? lets say, for mirrorles, cellphone, and go pro? So that you just click them in.
No, there is no function like that.
Will either of these gimbals work with the Canon 5d MarkIV?
No, the Weebill S is probably the smallest gimbal that would handle that camera, depending on the lens choice. The Weebill 2 is bigger yet, but still small in professional gimbal terms, and is very good, but more expensive.
Thank you sir!
You are most welcome.
I don't even know, but is there any update to make motion timelapse on the m2s? Someone said it's possible while using the App...
Not that I am aware of.
Can the m3 balance a Sony A6400 with a Sigma 16mm F 1.4 lens? I jumped the gun and went with the M2S, but i think the lens is too heavy and can't get it to balance properly
I’m not sure, I know it can balance the Canon M6 II and the Sigma 16mm, those cameras have a similar form, but I don’t have the Sony to test it.
Crane m2s vs M3! What is better in terms of stability and endurance, as well as pictures without motor jitter? Camera Sony ZV-E10 Lens Sigma 30mm 1.4
M3 is better, M2S is smaller, lighter, cheaper and still good. M3 is the most premium small gimbal I have ever see, the build is much better than the M2S.
@@markwiemels Thx! DJI RSC2 vs M3?
I would take the M3 for the smaller size. The smaller the gimbal, the more you will take it around and use it.
Hello Mark. I was looking to buy M2 which is still available, but then I came across M2S. I am going to use it with Sony A5100. It is mentioned as compatible for M2 and not listed for M2S. Do you think it is still likely to work with M2S? Thank you
I think it is likely, but you could contact Zhiyun and confirm. They seems to be good at getting back to people.
Thanks for the response!
hello .camera yi-
m1 ok?
Does any of them have a focus motor??
no
I looked at the M2S camera compatibility list because I want put a Nikon Z5 on it with the new 28mm F2.8 Z lens - I can see its fully compatible but no idea what the weight limit or lens compatibility is.
Great video! You said battery life is 8 and 10 hours
Since the zv1 has miserable battery, What do you think how many times could it charge the zv1?
I would be guessing, but a few times for sure.
Focusing on smartphone usage, how do these compare to the company's smooth product line?
The X5 is also great for the price, but it is inferior in build, but still performs very well.
ok, i already decided.. i will wait for M4 or M3S.. already 4 months..who knows maybe in 1-2 month
might be a while, and who knows what those gimbals will be like.
Thanks
The M2S will meet your needs fine. I would go with it.
@@markwiemels Okay thanks, and would you also say much larger and heavier lenses such as SIGMA's 16mm be okay for this gimbal?
I just wish the M2S was a similar price to the M2. I would like more power in the motors but you can get an M2 for like $120 right now
When the M2 was released it was $269 as well. They have discontinued the M2 now, so the ones for sale now will be the last ones available (or so I’m told by Zhiyun)
BTW, the M2 is a lot of gimbal for $120. Just won’t handle the bigger cameras and lenses.
Which one you will suggest for zve10 ?
Both work well. With the M3 you get better build quality and a more robust gimbal, if budget is a concern, go for the M2s, but the M3 is worth the extra money if its within your budget.
@@markwiemels thanks lot
hey, does face tracking work with 4k after connecting the gimbal?
Face tracking in the camera works, but the gimbal doesn’t follow you.
hi. can you connect the M3 to a7S3 to have a bluetooth record control?
I think it can operate via cable, if you want blue tooth you have to buy the bluetooth ad one.
Wii the A 6000 work with the cable controls? Thanks
yes.
@@markwiemels Thank you!
Good sir, you think M2s can handle a6500+sigma16mm? and Whats the max payload?. Thanks.
No, I don't think so, but I don't have this setup to test.
I own m50, what should I buy m2s or ronin sc? If any other plz suggest 🙏
Very diffrent gimbals, SC for bigger lenses, m2s for small lenses like the kit lens, 22 and 32mm canon lenses, etc.
I assume it will support the Nikon Z30, since it does support the Z50 and ZFC?
Yes, should be no problem.
@@markwiemels I appreciate the response! Thank you buddy.
Does one lose any functionality of either of these devices (M3 in particular) when the camera system being used is a smartphone?
I don't really know, but they use diffrent apps. So you should research this, it might be meaningful.
Its not , its the opposite actually
It’s not clear what you mean here. Can you provide more detail.
This gimbal doesn’t work with all universal phone clamps - it’s top heavy if the quarter inch screw centred on the clamp
That shouldn’t matter. You can adjust forward and back, and up and down, to compensate. Just like you would normally balance the gimbal.
@@markwiemels my gimbal falls forward even when the level is set to zero.
Try it, an iPhone 13 pro max and a joby griptight pro
Yes, it can be confusing.
@@markwiemels I've returned mine and have reported it for false advertising 💁
Is it normal that the Crane M3 makes constant quiet motor noises?
Will the m2s balance my xt4 with 16-55mm?
For sure you wouldn't have full range of motion, but it may balance. I would look at the Weebill S for that setup.
