Yes, you will need access to the inside of the vehicle to tighten the nut to seal the gland. Scanstrut makes different marine fittings that allow for imperfect diameter cables and use a different compression mechanism. I'm not completely against the larger cable gland solutions, however you have to REALLY make sure they are water tight after installing them (make sure you use a good lap sealant).
