That's a great way to fry your usb adapter, Shorting the leads to make that soldering iron tip heat up requires a ton of current. Even on the lower power end, a soldering iron would require 20W to be dissipated. From a 5 volt usb supply that would mean 4 amps of current is required, when most usb adapters are rated between 1 and 3 amps. This is disregarding power losses throughout the length of the tip and contact resistances at the terminals.

I dont think a steel tip would 'tin' properly. See in the video how the solder is coating the copper tip nicely thats called 'tinning' and it will be really difficult to solder without it, and solder wont stick properly to a normal metal tip. It also happens if you damage a proper soldering tip if you clean it with sandpaper and sand off the tips coating, it will have to be re-tinned again to work.

A significant note on the lighter, be sure you do this to an EMPTY lighter because the liquid in them is actually butane under extreme pressure and you could explode.

I drill a hole in the bottom of Bic lighters and refill them. I use a tiny good screw that can be inserted fast. It's easy and you only have to buy lighters when the flint runs out. Which is like 5 or 6 refills

Handymen (or "handyman's" if you prefer) generally don't care what you know. Health & Safety inspectors, on the other hand, might have a few qualms. As for the lighter 'hack', it would be quicker to create fire by friction... and more effective. If you need a makeshift soldering iron, a poker put in the fire for a minute or so would do the job... without the risk of electrocution. As for the rest, gimme a break!

Without the risk of electrocution? How many people do you know of that have been electrocuted by a 5 volt USB connection?
