Why has there been so little mention of saving Black lives from the climate emergency? For too long, racial justice efforts have been distinguished from climate justice work, says David Lammy, Member of Parliament for Tottenham, England. In a stirring talk about building a new movement to care for the planet, Lammy calls for inclusion and support of Black and minority leadership on climate issues and a global recognition that we can't solve climate change without racial, social and intergenerational justice.
This talk was part of the Countdown Global Launch on 10.10.2020. (Watch the full event here: • [Replay] Watch the Cou... .) There is no systemic racism in this country.
@@mojo3008 ok mike, while I think I get you point, and we probably are on the same side, lammy isn’t from America, he’s from the UK
I'd like to know where The University of Michigan claimed that only 12% of American environmental leaders aren't White, because if they did say that, they weren't looking very hard. Standing Rock was the most massive and long-lasting protest in environmental history, and it was entirely led by Native Americans, who also were the primary participants. And that was only the beginning. Standing Rock gave birth to environmental activist groups throughout the USA,Canada, and Mexico, all led by the indigenous people of this continent.
I think this is an important example of what the speaker calls being "cropped out of the picture". Or perhaps their criteria for "environmental activist group" didn't include groups defined by some academic definition that ignores size, persistence, effectiveness, and a high degree of organization for some other peculiar standard. I'm frankly puzzled.
I think he meant what is picked up by the (western european) media, not what groups are very effective.
If I talked to a random person on the street (in NL) and asked them what is the biggest climate activist movement, I guess it'd be Fridays For Future or Extinction Rebellion, not any of the much older (often indigenous) movements for protection and restoration of the Earth.
@YouStink LOL! You cared enough to comment. Most people who genuinely don't care don't bother announcing it unless somebody demands their opinion--it's not that important to them. In contrast, you went out of your way to volunteer the information that you supposedly don't care, to total strangers who didn't even know you existed till you spoke up. That's the action of someone who wants heard.
So, now that you've gone out of your way to get my attention, do speak up and say what's really on your mind.

Omg this talk is so cringing.
That's the word I was looking for
Illogical.
In no way are these two issues correlated. I subscribed to hear and learn from intelegent people on smart subjects- not be lectured on a vague correlation between social justice issues.
The video spells it out pretty clearly:
1. People who are distracted by social justice issues don't care about climate change
2. Climate can only be fixed if all of humanity works together to fix climate change
Therefore:
3. Climate cannot be fixed until people distracted by social justice issues no longer exist
@@ShadoFXPerino Thank you for attempting to spell it out clearly, but the logic is heavily flawed as it is based on false premises.
1. The people who can actually do something about climate change are elected leaders of countries and billionaires. We would need actual programs put in place that actually sequester carbon or do something about other greenhouse gasses. Re-distributing money isn't actually a solution, especially when all it really does is turn those people producing 2.6 metric tons of CO2 into people producing 16 metric tons. Just think about it for a minute. I'm totally on board with hiring a bunch of people to plant trees as he suggested or to build things that will actually DO something. That isn't what they are doing, but I would be on board with that. All they ever do is meet and talk about it. Carbon credits are the STUPIDEST load of crap ever. That is the reason the right doesn't take this seriously. Oh and forest management needs to be a thing. Forests aren't particularly helpful when we have a situation like we are currently having in California.
2. Nope. Even if everyone agreed that something needed to be done, what exactly are they supposed to do about it? While it isn't a bad idea to recruit people and to promote your cause so that there is enough public support to elect officials who can do something about it; ultimately the solution is going to involve people who re-design society. You just need a few people with a good idea who can get things rolling.
3. Since this was based on the false premise of 1 and 2 it is also false. This is an absurd position to take if you think about it from more than one angle. I'm sure they are both good causes, but that is like me saying I can't even start to build a house until everyone tells me how amazing the house will be and that we all agree the house will look amazing. Of course I can start building it, and of course people can start trying to change the climate to whatever they want.
4. Of course this brings up a real problem. Large scale efforts like planting trees will have a major impact in and of themselves on local climates. That is like trying to solve climate change by introducing climate change. Altering weather patterns might be great for some areas, but not so great for others. That is why this is ultimately such a political issue. Most solutions will involving hurting people in one way or another even though it may be a net benefit to the world.
Here is a video that (unlike this supposed TED talk) actually talks about real solutions and is an idea worth spreading. ruclips.net/video/ecxCL84n26g/видео.html&ab_channel=RealEngineering
@@wholelottalight The rich and the politicians can only be brought to heel on the environmental issue by vote or revolution. Blacks need to have their needs addressed before they will vote in eco candidates, I guess? Then after that we can all vote in eco politicians to make eco laws.
Overall I think the goal of this video is to get black activists more interested in eco activism, going as far as to put false promises into eco activists mouths to make eco activism more palatable to black activists.
What he's basically done is tell people to vote for eco politicians because they will need to solve social problems first before they can truly fix eco problems, and presumably that is what will be done. And even if they ignore social problems and only focus on eco problems it's still a quality of life bonus to black communities.
@@ShadoFXPerino So you're saying humans need to work together. What's stopping us. Just creating excuses for not taking action and actually doing something. You make out as though all black people want to make a change and no white people do. A human is a human and both white people and black people probably want change in the environment equally. I don't see the point making this a problem about race when it's clearly just a problem about the laziness of humans. Black and white people work together everyday and it works perfectly so stop creating problems where there isn't one because it actually ends up making you the racist hypocrite

This video is going to have people who are ignorant on or opposing doing something about climate change and racial inequalities to bring hate to the *other point*. If your point was to try to gather support for one cause by pulling members from the other, you have failed miserably.
Climate change, pollution, they are issues that involve the whole earth. The USA, Europe, China, India, and so forth.
The "Black lives" issue is so deeply american, that the amount of issues you're talking about don't even remotely pass through the mind of most people in europe or china. And if you speak of Africa's poverty? That's where white people are prosecuted and killed.
Stop trying to mix fights that have nothing to do with each other, and realise that you need to fight on different fronts using different messages and tools.
If on the way to that you want to help specific communities, that doesn't make it a prerequisite for everyone else's success.
On both issues? You're dividing, when you should be uniting.
The climate issue is fundamentally a social issue. Climate change is a consequence of industrial activity under the current economic system.
I do feel like he’s making one valid point: people that live in poorer areas (or the PC version of that) get more of the negative effects of climate change and poor areas contain more black people.
A more logical solution would then be to help poor areas with education, awareness and fighting/preparing against the negative effects of climate change.
I think you are making some good points though. Trying to view everything through the lens of blm makes no sense at all and will probably divide people even further. I also feel like blm problems usually equates to poor people problems. Not a very good precedent to set imo.

Although this video does not deserve a like either.
What's the matter?
1) Climate justice and racial justice are different things. You CAN'T mix them up, you can't try to solve one problem with another. It's like blaming the bad taste of a oversalty cake on a bad oven.
2) The video has good ideas. Like the fact that poor people suffer the most from pollution. But it's not just black peeople. White people suffer from this too, as much as Asians, Australoids and all others. Don't blame people for what they didn't do.
How can you fix it? Change the headline, for example "How climate change affects black peeople" or "How climate change is related to racial injustice" or "Why climate change is more affecting disadvantaged groups" or smth like that. And, of course, there is no need to push one problem to another.
TED is becoming more and more like a company trying to make money than a company trying to change the world and make it better. Please, spotlight the problem, don't try to make benefit from it.

seeing all these whypeepo (I am white so don't even try it) complaining about how they don't want to subscribe to a channel about learning because it made their little snowflake hearts shatter, it clearly demonstrates that they were never interested in learning in the first place. If you were committed to education in any way, in any area, you would understand what he's saying and agree that we cannot tackle the climate crisis without addressing racial inequalities. To say it doesn't affect people in cities more, disproportionately people of color, is laughable. 97% of scientists don't agree on ANYTHING, but they agree on this. Stop being butthurt over someone telling you there's a systemic problem. Did he mention any of you by name? Why are you offended, then? Maybe it speaks to the deeper issue, that you are, in fact, biased when it comes to race. And when you don't do anything to fix that, let alone acknowledge it, in a country with systemic racism, you enable the system and that is a racist action. It isn't difficult to understand, you're just willfully ignorant. Thank you for hating on this Ted Talk.

People that totally missed the point, part of the problem smh
Ever notice minorities have darker skin than white people? That's bc sunlight doesn't make it through the walls of White Privilege surrounding them but cuts through minorities like they're made of toilet paper #cancelthesun
@@unaa9380 explain then. Because I watched the video and I'm still not convinced.
Oh look... my cue to unsubscribe. Thanks TED.
They'll really miss you, I'm sure.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism I came here years ago for the science talks and technology that could change everyone's lives for the better. As of lately they've become nothing more than a political platform and it's grating. The dislike ratio on this video says that much.

Oh, its the bottom of a barrel being scraped.
Native Americans are unquestionably victims of environmental racism. The Commission for Racial Justice found that about 50 percent of all American Indians live in communities with uncontrolled hazardous waste sites (Asian Pacific Environmental Network 2002). There’s no question that, worldwide, indigenous populations are suffering from similar fates.
For Native American tribes, the issues can be complicated-and their solutions hard to attain-because of the complicated governmental issues arising from a history of institutionalized disenfranchisement. Unlike other racial minorities in the United States, Native American tribes are sovereign nations. However, much of their land is held in “trust,” meaning that “the federal government holds title to the land in trust on behalf of the tribe” (Bureau of Indian Affairs 2012). Some instances of environmental damage arise from this crossover, where the U.S. government’s title has meant it acts without approval of the tribal government. Other significant contributors to environmental racism as experienced by tribes are forcible removal and burdensome red tape to receive the same reparation benefits afforded to non-Indians.
To better understand how this happens, let’s consider a few example cases. The home of the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians was targeted as the site for a high-level nuclear waste dumping ground, amid allegations of a payoff of as high as $200 million (Kamps 2001). Keith Lewis, an indigenous advocate for Indian rights, commented on this buyout, after his people endured decades of uranium contamination, saying that “there is nothing moral about tempting a starving man with money” (Kamps 2001). In another example, the Western Shoshone’s Yucca Mountain area has been pursued by mining companies for its rich uranium stores, a threat that adds to the existing radiation exposure this area suffers from U.S. and British nuclear bomb testing (Environmental Justice Case Studies 2004). In the “four corners” area where Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico meet, a group of Hopi and Navajo families have been forcibly removed from their homes so the land could be mined by the Peabody Mining Company for coal valued at $10 billion (American Indian Cultural Support 2006). Years of uranium mining on the lands of the Navajo of New Mexico have led to serious health consequences, and reparations have been difficult to secure; in addition to the loss of life, people’s homes and other facilities have been contaminated (Frosch 2009). In yet another case, members of the Chippewa near White Pine, Michigan, were unable to stop the transport of hazardous sulfuric acid across reservation lands, but their activism helped bring an end to the mining project that used the acid (Environmental Justice Case Studies 2004).
These examples are only a few of the hundreds of incidents that American Indian tribes have faced and continue to battle against. Sadly, the mistreatment of the land’s original inhabitants continues via this institution of environmental racism. How might the work of sociologists help draw attention to-and eventually mitigate-this social problem?

@11STARFIRE Not only can we. We absolutely agree. Raising my voice didn't take away from the conversation. It added to it. Far too often (almost always), Indians are excluded from the conversation.
Pap. Amazing this fellow can say this with a straight face.
wow... so many comments from people not living in the countries or areas described in the video claiming it to be fake
Every issue is a race issue, even when it isn’t.
The speaker has confidence and clearly knows what he is talking about. His voice is clear and understandable even with an accent. His nonverbal gestures are helpful and enhances the message he wants to send. He didn't tell any technical jargons and is understandable of all ages.

Bye Ted, i am willing to come and resub once you go back on education track.
Agenda Presentation! Wow 😳

I'm a black, college educated engineer and I hate this nonsense.
Your race doesn't matter in this context and I hate that modern liberals have already pushed reasonable adults to include this in their statement because they fear not being given credit otherwise.
You are a rational human being and you hate this nonsense. Your skin color doesn't matter.
I don't know why you don't talk about this 30 years ago, now it's not gonna help with the global issues at all...
He’s RIGHT in the sense that these issues are systemic and interconnected. Those who are exasperated with their “victimhood” are refusing to connect the dots. I’m not implying that the US should police the world’s pollution, but if we truly cared about poor and/or non-white peoples, it’d be clear to see how they are disproportionately affected by climate change and pollution.
TED is going to fck up like Genius did...
