New Yorkers have a dark sense of humor. They don't think that pollution is non-serious, they just laugh kind of darkly when people call them out on their pollution problem, as if to say "Yeah, we know, you caught us... it's embarrassing." They're laughing that she's being very frank and doesn't mind pointing out something in an "undiplomatic" way, which generally New Yorkers enjoy, even at their own expense. Most of this audience is very much in favor of seeing climate change as a fact and doing better for the environment. But the very corrupt power structure that keeps things the way things are has left many New Yorkers disenchanted, and so we/they (and Americans in general), tend to laugh at our problems. There's that saying-- you can cry or you can laugh, either way it sucks.
I think she was trying to downplay it after all that laughter. New York doesn't quite smell like pollution, instead, it would be more accurately described as PEE, EVERYTHING SMELLS LIKE SUN-BAKED PEE, I COME FROM A TROPICAL THIRD WORLD COUNTRY'S MOST POPULATED CITY AND EVEN HERE IT DOESN'T SMELL LIKE PEE, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU NYC PEOPLE?!
When I went to India, first I went to Goa very close to the beach and the jungle. Next stop was Delhi...let me tell you, you could really smell the difference/pollution and while Delhi surely is more polluted than NY, I get what she says and I don’t doubt her words.

There are measures that can be taken. People are so stubborn and selfish you make a statement like that as an excuse to live your life "normally" and not make any changes. In the beginning, it's just a little and not very dangerous, but if you don't start removing it early and let it accumulate over the decades, you will have a toxic mountain before you, that you can't remove without being killed by it's toxic gasses anymore. I don't know you and your life circumstances and therefore don't know how that attitude developed and will certainly not be able to convince you otherwise, so I won't argue with you. American audiences laugh and "whoop" at everything. It's really annoying. One of the most annoying things is when there's a slow, sincere passage in a song during a music performance - during those quieter parts, US audiences start whooping. Really annoying.
I'm as swede myself. and I've also traveled to New York, and I can tell you that the air quality there is horrendous and you really can smell it. This is not a joke and it really saddens me how these people just laugh about it.
It also begs the question "what is the purpose of you having guests on your show"? I think too often the guests are there to sell a product and simultaneously stroke the ego of the host. Absolutely. Everyone comments negatively about the cost of Bernie's climate plan, but they really don't take into consideration how much more it'll cost if we don't do something like what he's planning.
Bernie would be the worst choice for climate change. He wants to phase out all nuclear power plants immediately, which currently generate 50% of all our carbon free energy. Whenever nuclear plants are closed they get replaced with fossil fuels, not renewables. Since closing the nuclear plant in his home state a few years ago, Vermont carbon emissions have gone up 16%. Discontinuing nuclear power on a national scale would be a disaster for the climate. Bernie is stuck in the 60s, we should be looking to the future. Statistically nuclear is actually the safest form of energy, even more than wind and solar. Look up Bill Gates’s TED talk on nuclear power if you want to learn more.

Tips for cutting down climate change -recycle -stop getting plastic bags from the grocery store -eat seasonal produce -start a small garden -set your thermostat to 75° in the summer 69° in the winter -take short showers -stop eating fast food if possible (Eat at eco friendlier ones instead Chipotle is one of them) -compost if possible -switch to safety razors -buy bar soap and shampoo -don't water your lawn -consider becoming vegetarian/vegan or a flexatarian (eating meat on special occasions) -buy clothes used -learn to sew There are so many and not all will work for your life but there are plenty that will. Find what works for you and start there.
Fight for and create laws that fight corporate waste. You could completely stop creating polluting waste as an individual -- ALL of us could -- and the corporations and their waste and pollution would still destroy the planet. We need to call massive corporations to account for the damage THEY do.
All of that, and plant TREES! Trees capture the carbon from the air and put it in the ground - we need that urgently. Every tree counts. Plant one...plant more, but imagine if everyone planted at least one! One use plastic bags are banned in New Zealand now - apart from some funny moments carrying too much to the car when we forget to take our own reusable bags and don't want to buy another, it's been way easier than expected. No need for them at all.

I was a guest speaker at a hospital in Karachi years back. One of the doctors asked me, " what do you dislike about Pakistan"? Replying, I relyed the experiance of when my driver drove over a bridge and I couldn't see one drop of water as it was choked with garbarge. That was a cathartic moment for me and I realized the impact of climate change then. I have been an advocate since.

One individual person choosing to go green will not change the environment on their own, but that's not why she's doing all of this. There's a good analogy of a man trying the impossible task of pushing a boulder, where he gives every ounce of his energy to do so. He sees success in not moving the boulder, but convincing people that together, doing something such as moving a massive boulder (a seemingly impossible task), as difficult as it may seem, can be accomplished if we work together. One person can't change the world, but one person can influence others to help change it together.
Very true. When we say "There's nothing you can do about it", we may as well follow up by laying down on a train track. Defeatism accomplishes only failure. We have to do whatever we can to stop the ongoing man-made climate disaster while there's a planet left to save. Using plants to feed animals (which is fed to humans) instead of feeding humans with plants directly is very resource wasteful. (And I am not full vegetarian myself, just trying to eat less meat.) South Africa has always had periods of plenty rainfall followed by dry seasons, and those who had the sense way back then prepared the necessary reservoirs to catch water during the periods of heavy rainfall to tide us over the dry seasons. This government is committed to what they term as "decolonization and radical economic transformation" (they won't say outright that they favour communism) and won't be following good water management practices to ensure that you as a citizen will always have clean running water. They are corrupt failures and will always be running South Africa to the ground for as long as people keep voting them in power. New Yorkers have a dark sense of humor. They don't think that pollution is non-serious, they just laugh kind of darkly when people call them out on their pollution problem, as if to say "Yeah, we know, you caught us... it's embarrassing." They're laughing that she's being very frank and doesn't mind pointing out something in an "undiplomatic" way, which generally New Yorkers enjoy, even at their own expense. Most of this audience is very much in favor of seeing climate change as a fact and doing better for the environment. But the very corrupt power structure that keeps things the way things are has left many New Yorkers disenchanted, and so we/they (and Americans in general), tend to laugh at our problems. There's that saying-- you can cry or you can laugh, either way it sucks.

Studies show that women in general get that kind of treatment in media more often than men. Men get to talk about actual issues, and therefore appears to be smarter. Women get asked more about emotions, family, or other ”softer issues”. This affects both womens’ and mens’ views of womens’ capacity in general. Like state-wide radio hosts or the like. They're local actors and singers in a small country that actually taxes the wealthy, not some sort of cabal of backroom multinational CEOs.
And it's a false dichotomy to say individual action and holding the wealthy and the rest of us responsible are somehow mutually exclusive, or that one is important but the other one isn't (even though she absolutely has been calling out businesses and governments as well). American audiences laugh and "whoop" at everything. It's really annoying. One of the most annoying things is when there's a slow, sincere passage in a song during a music performance - during those quieter parts, US audiences start whooping. Really annoying.

Bernie would be the worst choice for climate change. He wants to phase out all nuclear power plants immediately, which currently generate 50% of all our carbon free energy. Whenever nuclear plants are closed they get replaced with fossil fuels, not renewables. Since closing the nuclear plant in his home state a few years ago, Vermont carbon emissions have gone up 16%. Discontinuing nuclear power on a national scale would be a disaster for the climate. Bernie is stuck in the 60s, we should be looking to the future. Statistically nuclear is actually the safest form of energy, even more than wind and solar. Look up Bill Gates’s TED talk on nuclear power if you want to learn more.

-switch to safety razors
-buy bar soap and shampoo
-don't water your lawn
-consider becoming vegetarian/vegan or a flexatarian (eating meat on special occasions)
-buy clothes used
-learn to sew

The government was warned before 2007 about a future water crisis and they lacked any interest in building new dams to supply an increasing population. They were and still are too focused on looting the taxpayer.
South Africa has always had periods of plenty rainfall followed by dry seasons, and those who had the sense way back then prepared the necessary reservoirs to catch water during the periods of heavy rainfall to tide us over the dry seasons.
This government is committed to what they term as "decolonization and radical economic transformation" (they won't say outright that they favour communism) and won't be following good water management practices to ensure that you as a citizen will always have clean running water. They are corrupt failures and will always be running South Africa to the ground for as long as people keep voting them in power. Ask first why the electorate is not worried about government incompetence.

I absolutely loved how Trevor Noah was sensitive and respectful towards her and didn't just treat her like any other activist, but also like someone on the spectrum deserving consideration.

On the spectrum? Of autism? Because of the way she speaks? I hope not because do consider that English is her second or third language. If you mean her facial features, they're similar to someone with a trisomy 21, but also not really there. Simply there aren't enough physical characteristics to put her on the spectrum nor is there any evidence to suggest it. Unless she's actually come out and said it
