I always interpreted the 'monkey grip' to be a kin to a briefcase handle. Like Steve was a business man of music and the guitar was his briefcase.
I have a Jem from the 80's and it's still so much easier to play than any other guitar I've ever used. I'm talking about the low action, smooth neck -- it just feels fantastic.
I think the fact that the JEM is the second longest running signature model, second only to the Les Paul speaks volumes. I have a JEM '90 JEM 777VBK and it is a fantastic instrument and of all my guitar is is the one I enjoy the most.

Nice. I’ve got an 89 VBK, had it for a good 20 years. Love it to bits. Don’t know if you have the same issue, but I have to be so careful with it because it dents so easily and the hard coat seems to just fall off it!

I remember a guy using a JEM for jazz. It was weird at first, but it sounded like jazz, so why the hell not. Anyway, great guitar.
I have this exact same guitar - bought it in 1988. I played in a wedding band that played EVERYTHING and needed a guitar that could "do it all." We did George Benson instrumentals, country, pop ballads, Journey, modern country... another time I was recording a jazz guitar solo and was having a hard time dialing in the tone on my Gibson ES175. Finally, I picked THIS guitar up, switched to the neck pickup and there it was - effortlessly. I had to smile - here I was getting a better "jazz box" sound on the JEM than anything I could get from an actual "jazz box." Haven't been playing mine lately, as my other guitars are all active and I got spoiled with their tones.
I like how "Journey" becomes its own music Genre!! LOL!
It gets the point across. I was going to write something descriptive like "high gain power ballad..." or something like that. "Journey" conveys all that with one word.

The DiMarzio PAF Pro pickups used in both the neck and bridge positions of 1st gen Jems were originally custom prototype pickups designed for Bill Connors, the jazz fusion guitarist best known for when he was in the band Return to Forever, with Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, & Lenny White, on the album and tour for Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. His replacement in RTF on the next album was Al Di Meola, who used DiMarzio Super Distortions and PAFs, and later his own signature model DiMarzios... The PAF Pro was sonically designed to be fairly moderate and vintagish in output, like it's late 50's PAF namesake, but with added clarity and articulation, to accentuate the nuance and detail of fine technique. The PAF Pro in the bridge position of the 1st gen Ibanez Jem was the lowest output pickup relative to any used in later generations, but because it wasn't overly wound, and was designed more for Bill Conners' fusion than for rock or metal, it had an extra clear and detailed top end that like good P90s or Fender single coils, really exposed the proficiency of the player. If your playing isn't up to snuff, your entire audience will hear your flaws in detail..., but if you do got the chops, like Bill Conners or Steve Vai, then even the back row of the balcony will hear every badass nuance and detail of your phrasing...*
I bought mine the week it was released and I still use it. Over 800 shows with it and never out of tune. You forgot to mention that the guitar is wrapped with silk on both the body and headstock.
The guitar was released with the pink pickups ( which was the first run in 88) then it got released with the orange pickups in late 88.

Bought the hot pink 777 with disappearing pyramids in '89, paired it for years with a 100 watt Mosfet. Extremely playable, extreme sustain, crisp leads, ballsy rhythm. Still own it. Much easier to play than my American Strat, but happy to play both.

I myself own the Ibanez RG 570 (1990). It was the golden era of Ibanez.

If it needs explaining, you clearly don’t understand dude.
Most guitars built during that time were great. For Ibanez, the craftsmanship was perfect. The necks played like butter (and still do). The electronics were top notch. Frets didn’t need work. Made in Japan (many quality brands were) by very skilled people. Not to mention that the licensed Floyd’s on Ibanez’s guitars at that time were some (if not the best) Floyd’s available (many times out performing the original Floyd). Guitars basically came “set up”. An Ibanez built during that time were, and quite possibly still are, one of the best line of guitars ever produced. And they weren’t cheap either. My RBM-1 new in ‘91 was about $1,300. That price in today’s economy would easily reach at least double that and now your talking the price of a modern custom guitar from a boutique builder. A stock HHS configured Ibanez from that time can and will play any genre of music. Especially if it had a mahogany body.

Sounds like you're living off nostalgia more than anything. Golden Era implies things (quality control, products etc) have declined over the years and they haven't for Ibanez. 1300 now could get you a mid range Ibanez that plays just as well as something from the top of the line 90s, probably even better. Not to mention it's "set up" properly. Having played an Ibanez from the 90s, and owning 2 Ibanez guitars from the mid 2000's and currently owning a 2016 Steve Vai Jem, I can tell you that we are currently living out Ibanez's "Golden Era" For lack of a better word because I can't see things getting worse in the near future. Just take a look at any prestige lineup they have, they are incredibly top of the line for the price you pay.
I think if you wanna talk about Golden Eras, take a look at Gibson. But for now, talking about an Ibanez Golden Era is out of line.
I think my favorite thing about the JEM, was that it also launched the RG series. And IMHO the range of the RG types pretty much have every config you could want.
The Peavey Vandenberg. I've had one with the dual humbuckers, incredible guitar. It had such a tiny neck. Like 24 frets crammed in a Mustang length fretboard with an Ibanez neckprofile but a rather Les Paul like scale. Made classical chords feel like warm up excersizes. Factory Alnico 2 high gain pickups and an awesome Kahler trem that you could lock, so it became a fixed bridge. So underappreciated. Also that Dime ML blue/lightning bolt, that has to be one of the best guitars I've ever played. Coincedentally both signature guitars as well :)

These are amazing guitars . This model you're looking at has a great pattern. I am lucky to still have a good condition 1988 model & it still rips. I do love the all access neck joints of the later Jem models though.The great thing about Jems are the fact that they are so much more versatile than most would expect with the pick up configuration and that neck that gives endless possibilities . There are very few limits to these guitars.Great video and playing too!

I first saw the JEM when a friend was helping me learn to play. He was so good, and that JEM was awsome. He had the flourescent green, pink, and yellow with the Vanishing Pyramids. Such a hot looking piece. But it played so sweet that I chose the RG550 for my first guitar. Which as I understand was the starting point for Steves mad creation in this JEM, I think his was model 777. Cant be sure its been a bunch of years and a few beers ago. Your ability to show this guitars potential is on caliber with the guitar itself, great article.
I own an Ibanez RG 450 1992 made in Japan (a cheaper son of the Jem) and it is for far the best guitar I have ever played. I cannot find any other guitar that will allow me to play faster. It 's simply fantastic. The neck is the thinnest I have ever played, so easy to play and sounds great. And it still plays unreal. Those Japanese guitars from the 80s/90s were incredible
I had this stunning guitar. Should never have sold it. One thing I never got over were the thin in between sounds which had quite a volumedrop too. For the rest, a brilliant axe. Stayed in tune, no matter what.
I personally like the tilt joint better -- I think it provides a more solid connection between the body and the neck and subsequently offers better sustain and a more fuller sound -- just my opinion. Was happy to see that the USA released J Custom RG30 for 2017 had the tilt joint!
I think these and the Satriani's are the best signature Ibanezes ever

@Weaver Cattle Company I would recommend the jr. Other than the trem and hardware it's excellent. Plus those can be replaced years later, there not horrible there just ibanez branded tuners and trem. If I put a Floyd on my Jr, it's literally a high end jem just like that.

Don't forget its very useful bass roll off system for the volume control. Which cleans up your distorted sound without losing any highs.

Great video. Used to own an '88 JEM 77FP myself. Great guitar for shredding and high gain. Once I started getting into 60's & 70's rock, blues, and jazz it really did not hold up tone wise. Ended up selling the guitar. It was indeed easy to play and worked great for specific genre's.
I have the yellow Jem 777 in a case under my bed right now. serial # 882816. i bought in 1989 i believe. After owning many guitars, and playing hundreds of guitars, the Jem is still WAY up on the list of the best ever i've played (that's including various custom shop guitars from dean, fender, ESP ect.).. I don't believe i would ever sell it.
i bought and sold my original rg550 multiple times now. bought new from guitar resurection in austin TX. sold to friend. bought from friend of friend, sold to other friend of other friend. eventually saw it in a pawn shop a few years later and bough it back.
as it sits now. its one of the three things i own that i would run into a burning building for.

I still have the one I bought with my Bootcamp back pay check in Jan 1990. Love it, 30 years old and probable hasn't been played 10 hours, also have the 10th anniversary. I love them The TAM 100 by Ibanez is another I have, the only neck I ever felt that was easier to play than my JEMS.

I've been playing an '89 JEM77FP since the early 90's and it covers all styles beautifully... and no fatigue on your fingers... add a JCM800 2204 and you have guitar heaven! :-) (before the JEM was the RG750...and before that a late 70's Ibanez Artist) Slick video that Max!

ibanez is the best guitar company today because even their lower end models sound and play better than many other guitars.
agree to that. i own a S420 and it is on par if not better in buildquality than my fender and dean of almost twice the prize. only thing is the weak stock pickups. i've put a dimarzio "thr fred" in he bridge position and now it's just amazing.

My teacher played one,20 years back in time.i hated him for it🙂i forced him always to swap guitars in the lessons to get my hand on this amazing piece of a guitar. Ibanez always tryed new ways..

I've played a number of Jems, various models over the years. While I'm normally drawn to the sound of the 7vwh, every one plays incredibly well. I agree 100% that the Jem would be an excellent guitar to learn on if not for the pro level price tag
I bought rg 570 a couple of days ago. I use a translator. color-sour apple breeze, 98 years in ideal. worth fred and paf. not a single scratch.
I have an 88 myself...took out the PAFs and put in a Fullshred SH10B and a 59 in the the neck (twin humbucker only...relax its my workhorse and NEVER getting rid of it ever)..lol re-did all the wiring the way i like it and want it.! It's one that will always be amongst the 5 of my top 5s i always go to..👌👍🤘🤘🤘🤘
Good thing is you can get this HSH setup with tapped humbuckers on many guitars which is the most versatile pickup combo, not lovin the floral though, maybe on curtains?

I’ve always wanted one, the idea of super tall frets along with scallops where they are needed, thin neck, three pickups with a floating bridge and that handle. Plus they’re fucking beautiful
I've had my Jem 7V WH now for 15 years and other than my Mexican Strat, it's the only guitar I've never wanted to replace after time. It goes everywhere with me and is the best guitar I've ever owned in my 27 years playing. But that's just the player that I am. I can understand different players of different skills and musical tastes disagreeing with me because It's all down to player that you are. There is no best ever guitar ever made, there's just the best guitar for you.

I've got 12 expensive guitars and my Jem has always been my favorite, I got mine about 12 years ago and had to have the white, but I love just about every Jem.
30 yrs of production, makes it a classic, for sure. in the top 5.
In the top five? Les Paul, SG, ES, Tele, and Strat are the top five.
I own a JEM777 LNG 1988 and a JEM77 FP 1989. I bought them back in the days new and still play them. What else. Nothing more to say.
I can't play any instruments ... and have always lusted after the ability to play guitar (well).
Also, I'm only 70, left handed ... and have somewhat crooked fingers (which makes it a biatch to frete) ... so is it too late to learn to play, say ... like Stevie Ray Vaughn (jus' kidding).

I definitely agree! I am a proud owner of a JEM505WH maple fretboard with the famous DiMarzio Evos and I can't get enough of her brilliance :) I don't simply agree that its the best production 6 string ever because I own it rather I feel it really is a "gem" of a guitar due to its features, looks, sound and great playability. It also has tons of unmistakable rock n roll character topped with Vai flamboyance many of us guitar players love. The JEM also spawned another great rock and metal icon, the infamous RG. Much love for that machine too \m/
Actually, the RG made the JEM possible, and it was the RG550 that gets most credit, but it is front-routered, whereas the RG570 with its rear-routered body is almost a perfect match.

I van afford to play nearly anything I want. I've owned some really great guitars too.
I settled back to RG guitars due to consistent build quality, availability, and playabitity.
My first Ibz was a RG675i. It was a limited run, should have never sold it but I wore it out.
I currently own a RG 420, RG5EX1, an RGA which just smokes everything, and a base model GIO that I upgraded heavily. It is doesn't take a backseat to the others at all.

It was 1989 and after playing $30 Corts & a few other $50 B.C. Rich clones. LSShort, my neighbor’s brother walked past me with his Green Jem very close to the one Vai is holding in this Vid. Told me where I could lease one for $20 a month & my great mother took me to get one. They said it was a 2 month wait for the Jems so I decided on a still great RG! Lastly, I only wish I would have waited!!! Great Vid 👍🏼

Don't feel too bad I passed up on buying a universe uv777 the dip jem, for a good price in 1990 one of the biggest mistake I ever made.
For those wanting a jem-like guitar with a hardtail, there are a fair few RG and S guitars with the Gibraltar Standard hardtail. It's a big chunky bridge that feels a lot like a blocked off Floyd. It does string through or top-load, I find string through a bit too warm and muddy sounding whereas top-loading has that tight Ibanez sound. The only feature not available on a hardtail is the last four fret scallop. Dimarzio evolutions are an acquired taste, they cut right through a mix and sound a bit shrill on their own. Very tight and precise but you'll hear every accent to your playing. Even the smallest mistakes.

Rob King maybe too some, but I can, I haven’t owned that exact model but I have owned many Japanese guitars I’m not saying they don’t sound good especially with a decent amp but I still remember the feeling I got when I played my first American Strat, which is probably why you mainly see artists playing them, but I recently picked up a Mexican Hendrix strat 2015 and that sounds amazing but I also have a custom shop which makes me feel like I can do anything on it. Plus I play in a pretty clean VOX AC30.
Rob King Well that’s it, depends on the music, I’d have to disagree with more rock artists play Ibanez, maybe that’s a maybe Metal but definitely not Rock. And I recon I do have a close opinion on how it would sound as I’ve owned Ibenez, as well as many other guitars I won’t even go into my guitar collection, but other than Steve Vai and Joe Satriani who are such talented guitar players like Richard Blackmore said they don’t play from the heart it’s almost soulless, I get bored after 3 songs.
Rob King You just sound silly, I haven’t looked but I even have the confidence I say the biggest brand in guitars is Fender then Gibson then maybe PRS or Gretch then maybe Ibanez and it’s for a good reason, SOUND, you don’t have to change anything on a Fender to make them sound good, But I would encourage you to try a Peavy Wolfgang that is the nicest guitar I’ve played beside my PRS Custom 22. Thanks for your opinion, love maple/walnut necks too. 🤘

I bought one new to finish a recording session in 88, (my Carvin broke) as for the Jem, I still have it.. it's the only one I have. Do play it now n then, still love that crying sound of the front pick up threw a Marshall, just too warm to beat.. and the action is still better than anything I've seen elsewhere. I'll die with it.. most the time nobody knows it exists. Cant steal what doesn't exist.
I built a Jem with parts from BYO Guitar and surprisingly it plays better than a real Jem.
The pattern on this Jem is identical to my very own beauty. Mine is a 1990 and is in almost new condition. The guy who I bought it from never really played it as his guitar interests disappeared but he kept it in the case and just loved the look of it ( as many people still do)! The trem is like new and it still gives a very long flutter also when looking at the patterns I can see the cross weaving from the material just below the clear top coat. I will never sell mine as it is not only the most beautiful guitar on earth but it plays like a dream and it doesn't have the ultra skinny 'Wizard' neck profile like my RG750 but a very comfortable slight V shape or some would say a smaller U shape...anyways my hands never fatigue when playing my Jem. It also feels solid and sturdy and it is no feather weight but is not too heavy with a wider strap.
When I used to gig with it many of the younger guys instantly knew about them and every gig I did someone would say they love the guitar and even women would comment. Apparently Ibanez can't re-issue these again because they stated they can't as there is no more material available to lay onto the bodies and headstock. I don't entirely believe this story especially today as they could easily use decals and wrap the bodies utilizing today's technology for a fraction of the price it used to cost.
Looking for a 2000-2003 re-issue next as these have been very hot before even costing more than the original versions. I don't like the new Florals with the very different and not so pretty looks and the Blue ones could be nice if I found one with an ebony fretboard but the Korean and Indonesian versions will never hold the price and 'Premium' just means low quality to me as far as guitars go... so if you have a good re-issue pls contact me here and we can talk:)

I have a 1991 Blue Floral Jem and i have to say its a very well made guitar for sure it is my go to guitar i have a 1996 custom shop strat a 78 Les Paul which was my uncles but that jem just does it for me

This was the first Jem guitar I saw close up (Spring of '88). It was perched on the checkout counter at a local guitar store. Stunning to look at, and I still regret not playing it. Of course noticing the $1299 tag, I wasn't going to take that chance. lol

And to those of you who think it was based on the RG , slap yourselves around the Head , because Mr Vai gets a Royalty check every Year because the RG is based on the JEM . I know most of you know that , but Central Scrutinizer Doesn't . Anyway , the JEM is atleast the best of the Superstrats , and in my opinion it is hands down the best Electric ever made !

I have alot of Ibanez guitars mainly bcuz of their thin necks. Max, keep up the straightforward, no bs, hype!
It becomes difficult to switch to a Fender or LP when you play Ibanez guitars. The necks are so drastically different. I love Ibanez guitars tho.
Saying a guitar is the best is pretty indulgant. Nothing is more subjective than opinions about guitars. But oh well nice presentation nonethless.

MaxxxwellC sure I am in. To me it is fretwork, playability, astheatics, price. I have a pretty ridiculous guitar collection. And there are 2 brands that make consistantly great guitars PRS and caparison, and I must say everything from the Ibanez prestige Japan shop.
i would say even if the jem is not your favorite guitar it will still be the most versatile as it can do nearly everything. having a jem is like having 3 guitars in one and that makes them well worth the money even for the more pricey ones.
there are SOME things that aren't subjective. durability, viability, relevance, not to mention tonal versatility. there are maybe a half dozen guitars that aren't a les paul or strat that can claim that.

I bought a Jem Junior 555 over ten years ago on Ebay, amazing guitar. I only wish the tree of life inlay went all the way through the fretboard but it is a great super strat guitar. I still love it!!!

The JEM is an amazing guitar, and likely is the best metal, rock, shred ever!!! The problem.... it's an Ibanez! You either lover Ibanez or hate them.... I cannot stand Ibanez (except the Iceman is cool)

They are sterile. No soul. It remember this guitar coming out. Didn't much like it then either. Most expensive guitar in the store, though.

I overhauled my Jem that I got from my father, it's pretty much the same as yours, just a '91. I've gotta say, after fixing it up, it is one of the best guitars I've ever played. And I've played some good ones.

You have to be kidding. Nobody of any note has recorded anything on it, except Vai. There isn't any classic songs or sounds that use a JEM.
Are you saying that classic sounds is what makes a guitar great?
If it was a great guitar, then "great" musicians from different genres would have used it to record their acclaimed music. Several greats, including Jeff Beck, claim Fender strats are the best guitar ever made, while I'm sure others say it's the Les Paul. . Nobody claims it's the Jem.
Bit of a stretch my friend, to claim anyone who has ever played an RG, will think a Jem is the best guitar ever.
The RG heavily relied on the Strat design, and is used in less musical genres.

Changing a pickup wasn't really "innovative"? EVH kicked off the superstrats, then Sambora had a strat with 3 pickups.
Anyway, peace out. I just wanted to say I totally disagree that JEMs might be the best guitar ever, and backed up that it was pretty much a single genre guitar, that no other top player seems use. Nor does it have a distinctive tone people chase. I personally find them a bit embarrassing, with the monkey grip, tree of life and some of the colour options.

Great review, I’m sure you have the ability to completely shred on guitar, and show off all of your playing skills, but in the review your playing ability is not what you were trying to show, your focus was completely on the guitar, a very honest look at what sounds and playability the guitar offers, I commend you on a great review. Many guitar reviewer post videos under the guise of I am reviewing a guitar, but really they just want to show off their skills. I hope this comment make sense. And again thank you for a video that was informative and well put together.
This guitar’s metal tone is good, but the clean is totally crab😓. For this price range I better buy a PRS customer 24.
Never had a chance to try or own one but I noticed a couple things listening to this video. First: the sustain. Far better than most, or almost all other bolt neck guitars. Second: The tone, again far better than most guitars with a Floyd style double locking tremelo. I don't think the Basswood body is adding that much to the tone and the only real significant design element difference is the neck. Specifically the neck joint. Being 24 frets the neck is longer and also much set deeper into the body than any other bolt neck guitar I've ever seen. This seems to be what is contributing the great sustain & tone this guitar has (at least in this video). Also I'm sure the detail and workmanship also contribute, but I've got to think it's the neck joint making the significan't difference. The deep pocket, with very good neck to body contact. More than say a typical Strat or Soloist style. The length of the neck joint would also tend to make it a tighter, more solid fit. I think I've learned something here that I'm going to try with my next build. Any one else notice this, or have an opinion about it?

Also Jem Jr is a steal, ive palyed 2 out of 5 that were perfectly setup at GC. Great guitars.
