Jay, I actually found this video the best I've watched (and I've reviewed a TON today). I just ordered this same quadcopter, and thought "wow this guy is addressing the exact things I'm wondering and worried about..." Watching your progression was inspiring as this is new to me as well. And YES I wanted to hear about crashes!!! No one talks about that, so thanks (and umm I did just order the blade guards!). Well done man.
Nice video, with enough different locales to keep it interesting. Watched the whole thing, something I don't normally do on videos this long. Keep flying and posting your vids.
The Phantom is a lot of fun and you definitely need some space to fly it! I lost mine already ;) I'm planning on going Thursday, you? Supposed to meet with BHPhoto for a bit, but I did not bother scheduling anything else.
Sorry to hear. This seems to be the biggest problem with the Phantoms. Everyone I know is worried about breaking their new $1300 toy on day one. I'm planning on going Thursday as well even though it doesn't seem like there will be anything "new" announced. Haven't scheduled anything formally. If you want to meet up let me know!
I like the video because you show the reality of how it is flying the phantom FC40. I have one and i am very careful and try as much as i can not to crash it. I had the pro guard took them off it fly more stable
***** Haven't time to watch whole vid at the mo but I think I read somewhere that you can download a programme to make the quad fly "headless" ie the quads orientation in this mode doesn't matter - stick left sends quad left, forward sends it forward and so on. Hope this helps, and that I'm not mistaken. Regards from England.
dunholm1 Yes your right, I think That is the course lock mode...Left top stick to the middle position. then its like you say headless...Great mode for filming in
Jay, Loved the video, you are spot on. They are just fun! Got mine a year ago and like you have had a few crashes but have learned a great deal. I wish I had a ton of money to drop on the latest DJI toy, but I guess it would move my stress level up and I would fear crashing more. Thanks for posting the video it was great!!
Jay.. Really enjoyed your Video. Loved the shots around your house (wish i was living there) WoW great views of that bridge & old derelict factory. Looks spooky to me I would'nt want to go in there! Missing that guide wire was a miracle... Ive just got an FC40 & after viewing the DJI D\Load manual it looked so confusing that i was thinking of returning the copter to the store but hey your video has given me inspiration to get the props (& guards) on & give it a go. By the way you should be feeding chopper so he doese'nt have to eat the phantoms props! Cheers..
ducter2001 Thank you very much for the comments and yeah that turn-up instruction was a nightmare to look at for sure. Much easier than it looked I assure you if I figured it out first try ;) Chopper says Hi! Jay
Thanks for sharing. Interesting. Have seen several many reviews via others on various copters that carry a video camera. They all have issues at times in the flying of these beasts... but laugh about it too. Hope you continue having fun with it.
Cool video Jay, good to watch you getting to grips with the quad copter. I think it's totally amazing that this technology is available to everyone... It's definitely an amateur film-maker's dream for breathtaking shots on the cheap! I bought a Hubsan quad about a year ago for fun... just £25, maybe around $37 US... At this price the Hubsan is almost disposable! Yeah, reversing the controls when the copter is facing you does mess with your head but you'll get it. Jay, you've gotta get in to that building and get some cool low-light shots. Just watch out for weak stairs or floorboards!
Thank you for the comments ;) I need to get into that building for sure, and yes it looks dangerous! I really don't want to deal with the cops at this point in my life...
You like to explore like I do. I like see things that I've always been curious about from the air. Your a little more gutsy than I am flying though, that big culvert made my heart skip a beat.
really great video......... i´m about to buy the fc40 and this video drives me to make it as soon as posible.... nice house by the way!! . . greetings from Colombia
Good video man. I got mine yesterday from UShobby off ebay, it shipped and got HERE like 3 days before schedule, I was pretty happy with that :) Took y first flight yesterday, not bad at all, at the end I turned my radio off to put her in fail safe, and I watched it float in for a flawless landing :) ANYway, good vid, thanks for sharing!!~~John
Awesome job and thanks for sharing! I lost mine int he trees unfortunately. My Phone stopped communicating with the camera and I lost site over the trees. I tried turning the controller off, but it never made it back :( I need a new one now and am currently saving for something, but can't decide on what to invest in. The F450 kit looks awesome, but more lift would be nice for a Nex camera! Jay
NO WAY DUDE!!! I am so sorry to hear that!! I assume you looked for it and all, dang bro. My area is full of trees, so I have to really lean towards over cautious. I've made two videos, they saved as MP4 files, and I forgot how to fix it so Magix can do its thing. Good luck to you man, and again I hate to hear about your quad :(
Thanks for the video. I ordered one more or less on a whim some days ago, and I have never tried to fly one before... Your video gave me hope that I'll manage to control it with some practice! Btw, have you had a chance to explore that abandoned factory yet? Looks cool!
Hey man! Like the video. My only bit of advice is that flying around peope (like at 7:30, your daughter maybe) is really dangerous, especially for a beginner. The props can and will break skin and bone, not a fun trip to the hospital. Believe me I know from experience!
Lyle baillargeon Yes, I totally agree, and thank you very much for the suggestion. I try not to do anything like that anymore and use more clear areas to play around ;)
Fun isn't it? You might consider going to the DJI website and connecting the drone via a usb cable. You will be able to use switch S2 and use the IOC feature. This will help you with your orientation confusion and problems. You can also update the software for the transmitter too. IOC is an acronym for intelligent orientation control.
if you were having issues with the control of the quad and your orientation to it, why not use the IOC mode? So forward is always forward no matter what direction the quad is facing.
Hi Kevin and thanks for the comments and question. The quality is pretty decent considering the size and weight of the tiny camera. It does take still images also via the smartphone app. it has a button for photos and to start recording video, as well as zooming in and out which I did not cover in this video. The still images are decent quality, but nothing like a real camera. More smart phone looking in quality.I hope that helps,Jay
Hello Jay, Can you please tell me how far is the first person view (fpv) on the fc40 cam. Only i,m thinking of getting one of these..Thankyou for any reply you may have for me...Regards Bri...........more vids please. we like em
i'm going to buy a dji phantom fc40 and ive a Question, Jay... is it hard to configure the FPV and GPS? do you have a video explaining it? if not, please do it. I enjoyed this video
Hubsan Hd Hello and it was not that hard to configure the GPS. It does require you to spin it around in a few directions, but I did it and it worked as the pictures described. All the other configuration was done at the factory. The camera is very easy and just a App on the phone that talks to the camera separately. I'm sorry, but I no longer have the Phantom as I lost it unfortunately Otherwise I would make a video explaining all this much better. When I get my next copter I will go more advanced for sure! I hope that helps,Jay
Hi Jay, I just got me one of these fc40,s. But am in the erly stages of covering the instructions and utube vids before i attempt to actually fly it..(.Don,t wanna flyaway right off lol.)....I,m Just woundering if you can give me some idea of the distance that you have wittnessed (first person) of the link between camera and android fpv. is your camera mounted with standard mount? or something added? How did you get the straight down shots? When I first mounted it, I didn't see a place for the 3rd shock absorber mount. So I could tilt the cam. After installing the top mount, the tilt is very limited. But just now, wondering if the camera mount was on backwards, would it tilt more. Nope, then I realized the mount will tilt all the the other way, and all I need to do is push in the camera backwards... can't wait to try it. I've always been fascinated looking at maps to see how roads don't go where I thought they did and looking out airplanes to figure out where I was.
Glad you got it all figured out and I did wonder about the third mount for minute as well as how to aim it completely downward ;) Thanks for the comments! Jay
Jason Hermann just watching your vid again. you talk about the controls being all backwards if your quad is turned around. And that is important to LEARN how to turn your brain around. lol, yeah it went over the trees and out of visual site. I then lost the camera view from my phone and never saw it again :( What happen was I was trying to watch just the phone and fly it. But when I did the 360 pan it drifted about 75 feet due to the wind. I could not tell it drifted looking at only the iphone. When I looked up from my deck, it was out of view. From the camera it was hard to tell what direction to to go because it was looking outward. I then lost camera at that moment. So I tried getting it home, but that failed. I can only imagine the battery died? Not sure. I searched for hours, but never found it. Waited till the leaves came down which is now, and still can't find it unfortunately. I was hoping the fall would reveal it's hiding place, but no such luck as of yet. phoneguylms

Yes it works, but it does not get all 6 satellites, so the red light will occasionally blink sometimes until all 6 sync up. Going around the house I'm sure it lost satellites and grabbed new ones.

I have been flying RC planes and helicopters for many years. Best to learn by flying with a simulator. Aerofly 5 is a good one. Works with Mac and PC. The FAA is going to crack down on these quads because many are flying over 400 feet and flying into commercial air space. For rules on safe flying go to the model AMA site and real their safe rules.
Thanks for the comments and sharing some knowledge ;) I have zero and did not look at any other videos on flying these things, but did read the instructions from start to finish a few times. A simulator makes a lot of sense and I could probably use my play station controller! I can totally see these requiring a license and registration tag of some sort really soon. This is why I got mine when I did ;) At least I will get a month or two out of it before I have to pay the government money. I can see the need and danger these drones or even larger ones can create. Some go up to 5000 feet! Thanks again for the info,Jay
***** how about getting the live view video from the gopro to ur phone. is it as good as the built in camera? is the range as good? too much lag? even possible?
Great question and I don't know if the GoPro can do that. The new unit might be able to, but I have no idea on specs. I think the Sony Action camera can do it though with the wrist watch camera set-up. I will be looking to upgrade the camera for sure, so I will be doing re-search on this shortly!
Yeah, the new Hero3 Black edition has Wi-Fi for sure: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1003301-REG/gopro_chdhx_302_hero3_black_edition_adventure.html/BI/7257/KBID/7777/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x464234
It's pretty good, but when you are used to top quality video it's noticeable less good. Not bad though at all considering the price and turn-key solution!
So how is your relationship going with your copter now? I appreciate all your fine videos.. I am buying the SLR Sony A7 S with the Sony 18 - 105 mm lens after watching your videos.. Thanks again for your human fun videos... www.flyingmonkeybusiness.net
Perfect Fathers Day Gift! It's great watching a real person learning to fly one of these, just a really cool video.
Thank you very much for the comments Tom ;)

Randy Talley Thank you very much ;) I prefer be 100% honest in my videos, so what you see is what you get with me....
Hey, thanks for the very real video, I just got this toy for Christmas and I'm glad you showed your mistakes and advice !
Nice video, with enough different locales to keep it interesting. Watched the whole thing, something I don't normally do on videos this long. Keep flying and posting your vids.
More fun than you can imagine!

Thanks;) it's cool , lesson learned and I almost lost it about 5x I would say. Next drone will have gps tracker for sure! That should be standard IMO
Very informative video. I'm thinking of buying an FC40. I like doing photography around the many disused Railways in the UK. Thanks for sharing
Brenna Kellly Thanks for the comments ;)
You're welcome. Do you have any more videos?
Thank you for your video Jay. Getting mine in a couple of days time and I really enjoyed your video
Jeff Brown Thank you for the nice comments ;)

Meant to say read the safe rules of flying at the American Model Association website. AMA or short.
Thanks again!
From up there, your parents house looks like its in the middle of a broccoli field LOL ;-) Happy flying!
Thanks for the comments Bobster986
Good review Jay, like the honesty and like you money is tight but you have sold me on one and I'm ordering tonight.... I enjoyed it....
Victor Long Happy flying and good luck with yours :) Thanks for the comments as well!
You will be able to use switch S2 and use the IOC feature. if you were having issues with the control of the quad and your orientation to it, why not use the IOC mode? So forward is always forward no matter what direction the quad is facing.

Hi Kevin and thanks for the comments and question. The quality is pretty decent considering the size and weight of the tiny camera. Jason Hermann just watching your vid again. you talk about the controls being all backwards if your quad is turned around. And that is important to LEARN how to turn your brain around. Jay
yikes! are you willing to share the story about how you lost it? How much effort did you put in to try to find it? etc.
lol, yeah it went over the trees and out of visual site. Hey Jay, I'm trying to figure out if I can buy the FC40 camera separately online and just use it on my F450 quadcopter I built with a KK2 board? Basically before I make the purchase, is it compatible with any quad or specifically with the Phantom?
Nice flying brotha,
Cheers
adam assaf The camera works with anything and the smart pjhones via Apps. It doesn't plug into the phantom or anything. It connects on the bottom via a GoPro type mount clip and screw, which allows for camera adjustment swing. Thanks for the comments!
Thanks brotha
Really enjoyed the video. I've been waiting for the Parrot Bebop to be released. The marketing video is pretty awesome. If it's release price is too much this will be my fallback. Thanks for the post. God Bless
Carvalho Nelson I have also been waiting for that parrot unit forever it feels like. Looks like a great solution for what I want and need. An auto level and adjustable camera is nice to have, but costs so much more money. I want full 1080/60p at least with my next purchase, but may just use one of my real cameras if I get a big copter. The smaller ones are so much more practical though.
Does GPS work in your yard and deck?
Yes it works, but it does not get all 6 satellites, so the red light will occasionally blink sometimes until all 6 sync up. Going around the house I'm sure it lost satellites and grabbed new ones.
i have the same drone.mine wont take off at all even on full throttle.cud this b bcoz i used it and the batteries after about 8 months.the nazaM software check in my pc with this droine shows its correctly calibrated
How do you get Ioc on f40 when there is no usb port for naza
Oh I forgot to ask, I heard you mention photography a few times, is the quad capable of taking photographs or is it Just video.
Jeff Brown Both Photos and Video!
***** Thank you for your reply ;)
my uncle just sold me his phantom fc40 for a $100.00 cause he bought a new one. i tried calling dji cause i was having a problem finding the app for it.........coming to find out the app is no longer in service cause the drone is old(it came out in 2014). so i cant download it to my galaxy s21 ultra 5g. do u still have the drone now?

You sure can, it comes with the mount for it ;) Jay

I had two crashes out of 12 flights. Biggest loss: one prop $5 and loss of some camera standoffs. DJI Phantom FC40 Crash! - not major
