Why am I suprised? Of course the 911 Turbo is faster. Has more hp and AWD. I'd still prefer the AMG GT S but nonetheless both are amazing cars.

The fact that the AMG GTS can put up a fight against a Porsche 911 in its first couple years of production is impressive to me. Mercedes has a very purpose-built sports car on their hands, which they should definitely continue to produce and improve upon. Mercedes needs to hold a car like this as a staple for their performance line-up on the high end & build on it.
I had a 2016 911, it was the base model but nonetheless it was a very uncomfortable car. The other thing I wasn't impressed with was the straight line power, I even drove the S and the reason I didn't get the S was because I didn't feel a big enough power difference. Bottom line is, while Porsche definitely does make a better track focused vehicle, that's also a problem it has for someone who isn't tracking their car. The AMG GTS is a far more fun car to drive on the roads. You get so much power on a light-light sprint compared to a 911, and you still get all the comfort of a Mercedes, with the track ability even if you do need it. The AMG GTS also gets a lot more attention, has more super car presence..
Overall, unless you're tracking your car the AMG GTS is a better pick IMO.
Well said, Alessio. You are right. The feeling i get from driving my GTS is something I haven't felt in any other car, even those that cost considerably more. It also does exude presence above its weight class.

We are in the best car times there has been period. There is so much to choose from, depends on you personality taste and so on, there is a car for you.

00’s were better; enough tech to be a nice place but still not intrusive, great power back then and the cars have so much more feeling when you’re pushing them.
I have the 2015 911 turbo and it is by far the best Porsche I have ever driven! It's like driving with crazy glue on your tires! Just insane! I have been blessed to have 9 Porsches and Porsche took this turbo to another level. But I have to say that the AMG GTS interior is one of the coolest I have ever seen. I think if you want a very cool stand out the GTS is just an incredible car too! It's is marvelous that these manufacturers give us car lovers these incredible choices to play with! I'm going to order one of these GTS since I think it's a very unique looking ride with great performance and love the rumble coming out of the exhaust!! Thank you for the comparison!!!!

9 Porsches? What are you working your way up to the 918 spyder? That rumble coming out of the exhaust in the AMG GTS is a button you push to make it the engine sound louder. I dare you to ever drive with that button OFF.

It looks great, it's a 2+2, you can go to the mall in it, you can take it to the track, you can take it on long journeys, you can take to the opera, you can drive it in winter, it has a lot of pedigree, its retains its value pretty well and it's damn fast!!!

The "wank factor" of the AMG is 10 times that of the 911 Turbo. AMG GTS is hands down winner as a road car. Its definitely more playful (read: FUN) than the nerdy 4WD 911.

991 turbo any day
Fair comparison. Realistically, the AMG GT was supposed to be slotted between the 911S /GTS and the Turbo/Turbo S, but in reality, the S model, which is the only one available now, is listed here in central Florida for about the same price as your typical well quipped 911 GTS coupe with the carbon brakes, which is to say in the low to mid $130k range. Interestingly, on the AMG-GT S, the carbon-ceramic brakes are an option, but the trick Burmester amplifier and speaker setup that is a rather expensive option on any of the 911's, is apparently standard on the Mercedes. So realistically, the base price of the AMG-GT S is about $20 K less than the base Turbo and like maybe $10-12K more than the base price for the RWD GTS.
I love Dan Prosser. One of the best new car journalists around! Love reading his features in EVO magazine. Making his name at EVO. Oh, I'd take the Mercedes. But take it back for the Porsche ;)

Alastair Brown Both these cars look better in the metal. I guess the manufacturers spec the press cars in bright red and yellow because they show up well in photos, but people buy them in black and silver and grey, which looks sleeker.

Hmmm... testing GT cars on a track...now that doesn't make sense. The AMG GTS in particular was meant for long comfortable journeys. Looking at the camera views from inside both cars, the GTS is much more luxurious and pleasant. Plus, all I heard the whole way was that roaring engine track from the Merc - which was AWESOME!
So your logic is that Mercedes made a two door 100,000 pound sports car to go on long comfortable journeys...
HecklerGT2 Yes! That is what a GT car is pretty much for. If you are really rich and like to journey in style with another (cause rich people's kids are raised by the babysitter(s) ) and show off with something flashy that is comfy then that is the type of car you buy. Not all cars are meant to be raced around a track and there is always a tradeoff between performance and comfort. The Porsche is also a good example of this. The 911 turbo is supposed to be its touring car while the GT3 and the RS version are the track monsters and consequently have done better Nurburgring times. SO both are GT cars and should hence not have been tested on track and rather on a winding country road. And, of the two, I think the Merc is the better option for a long flashy journey!
Both great cars! Yes, the Porsche is the winner on the circuit but it loses against the AMG on looks and sound. Just look at that AMG, inside and outside... Absolutely amazing. I'll take the AMG over the Porsche but if I can I would want both.

Porsche is faster. That's it. The Mercedes looks amazing, is not that far behind on speed and costs less, it's the better choice. I don't care what fan boys say the Porsche just looks stupid.

Hold up, the 911 has about 25 more horsepower and all wheel drive and it's only 1.8 seconds faster than the AMG? Fuck that. I'll take the beautiful AMG inside and out every day. That sound from that Merc is glorious. Imagine flooring it while going through a tunnel at night and no traffic with windows down? Salivating.
Winner here is clearly the Mercedes Benz.
The Merc could be half the performance of the 911 and I'd still drive it for the looks alone. One of the best looking grand tourers ever built.
TheAboriginal I also don't really see these cars being in the same category anyhow. The Merc is a luxury GT, the 911 is a stripped down rocket with basically no amenities. They serve different purposes.
right on. the porsche is an engineering wonder, no doubt. but it's also got that unfortunate emotionless german engineering facade. the merc turns heads like nothing else in that price bracket (save maybe the r8). you'd have to go on the track to justify the greatness of the porsche. you'd just have to open your garage door to justify the drama of the merc.

The result was to be expected, considering the Turbo S proved to be faster even than the Speciale. What surprised me is the difference between Turbo and Turbo S, 1.6 seconds. Was expecting less than a second.

Although I'd most likely take the porsche, I think the fact that it isn't rwd gives it a HUGE advantage... the GT S is a very nice car for that market. I'm glad it exists.

the porsche is faster on a track, but no one drives such a car on a track. the porsche is boring, I would take the AMG all day, looks better, sounds (way) better, WAY better interior. its just the cooler car, and I think its more fun to drive in normal traffic.
Actually porsche is not boring . I have no chance to drive amg gt s , but i drived 911 turbo for 1year before and taht experience was amazing . Maybe you drived porshce on comfort mode which is not that responsive.
Keep telling yourself that. Actually the reverse is true. Even if the 911 were slower, it's a blast to drive. Even in traffic. The AMG is pedestrian.

I loved this test. Another great comparo from evo! Even though I am a 911 guy I do think pitting an all wheel drive 911 against that GT was a tad unfair. There are just so many inherent traction advantages that come with the four wheel drive, and with the power that particular 911 packs the added weight isn't really an issue. I'm not saying this review is worthless, it does have lots of worth, but it would also be interesting to see a slightly more similar GT vs 911 comparison. Keep up the great work evo!
Great video and like to see Dan Prosser taking a more prominent role in evo. I would take the Mercedes. 911 is incredible but the Merc is fun on track and looks beautiful. It's not all about lap times.

These "supercars" best perform on a race track and there aren't many race tracks in every part of where you live. So for the most part those 2 cars will be used on everyday roads where you can't truly test what they're made of. So the 1-2 second difference between the Porsche and the Mercedes really doesn't matter.
What does matter no matter what road you're on is the look of the car. Which looks more aggressive? Which has the more visually appealing design inside and out? The AMG GTS wins that by a mile.
The AMG GTS actually looks like a supercar, it's more likely to get people's attention because it looks more like the Lamborghini/Ferrari caliber of cars while the Porsche 911 have had the same design on their cars for the past 10-20 years and so it doesn't stand out. The $170,000 Porsce 911 GTR looks exactly like the $50,000 Boxster. They all look the same just add or take away a spoiler and change the wheels, everything else looks the same.

The AMG's design is more of a classic GT/Hotrod hybrid, whereas the 911 is a classic sports car with a shorter wheelbase. Neither can be classified as 'supercars' in terms of looks. The Ferrari 458 or the Lamborghini Aventador are examples of supercars, which are far more exotic than the AMG or 911.
Having said that, both the AMG GTS and 911 are fantastic cars with neither car being the clear winner; unless track times are the be all and end all for the buyer. Which I highly doubt.

Still, it's a bit odd noone makes a test of this against an SLS and SLR, which would be truely worth watching. In the end, a GT is kind of a successor to the latter ones even though it down on power and breed and much more, apart from technology, so EVO, please, consider making one

Interesting... It turns out that turbo s is 1.6 sec faster than tuebo, so extra hp with PDCC and cermics play quite a significant role...
I’m finally able to afford to buy my first sports car ( Currently own an E63 ) I’ve been researching for months and think I’ll get the AMG GT . I really wanted a a 997 Turbo but the mark ups are crazy and for the price point the AMG is more of attractive deal.

A 911 GTS is a much more reasonable competitor to this car in terms of price and features. The Turbo costs $17000 more and is bare bones on the inside, whereas the AMG GT is fully loaded. Not to mention the 4 wheel drive advantage of the turbo
Love both these cars. Always liked a Porsche. I have been around Anglesey Circuit many times on a motorbike that cost me a couple of grand. My best lap time was only a few seconds behind. Bang for buck, bikes win. But we all love a good car. Good video 👍👍👍🏴🏴

As expected, I don't think any motoring enthusiast would argue that the 991 turbo is still the king when it comes to this kind of stuff. But it would have been interesting to see the all wheel drive variant of the GT go against the turbo.

Just have 2 point.
1 - Why people need to know how quick its around the corners or circle if in Britain on normal roads its 30 mph and motorway 70 and its straight.
2 - I doubt that people who spend 100k+ on a car will go and thrash it around circle on track days, because not every one is Lewis Hamilton and stuffing 120k+ Porsche in the wall is not a great day.
I just need to know how much Aldi bags I can get in the boot of this cars and how comfortable they are on british roads.

That merc is a thing of beauty and craftsmanship, porsche just seems less connected with the driver and no thunder from the engine unlike the amg. Just my opinion

don't forget that the suspension on the Porsche is McPherson strut front and rear the same suspension you find on a car under $30,000 and the Mercedes has double wishbone suspension front and multi link in the rear the same suspension you would fond on any Rolls Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ferrari, lotus,and all of the other high end cars.

I take the GT S ey'day, all day. Porsche is a champ @ extremes but the GT S is alive even on my way to pick up my kid from school. Plus GT S looks betta to me.

Lap time wise, other magazines has compared gt s to 911 c4 gts and that's more in line, although still slower.
Earlier that 911 turbo s has lapped faster than speciale by evo so it's no surprise

I imagine the 911's rear-wheel steering is giving at least as much of an advantage as the 4WD is, not that that detracts in anyway from its victory.

The GTS was better so you know the Turbo whipped it's ass.
At this sector in the market speed is getting so ludicrous that 0-60 and the like should be close to irrelevant pub talk (the entry level mid-engined ferrari has Enzo power, where do you go from there?). In the real world, the Porsche is the better car with AWD and vestigial rear seats, but having been in a neighbor's AMG GT S (ridden and driven), clearly that makes you feel more special than a hotted up 2017 Carrera with that sound, looks, and ubiquitous but near flawless Mercedes interior . If you want numbers, buy a 911 turbo, it's better, but for everything else there's AMG. Coming from someone who really did not think anything of the car until he got in it. Shame the R8 isn't getting a lower entry model yet, that'd be the fiercest 911 rival to date with S-tronic and turbo v8 (or I5, rumors say).
I remember his first video review on EVO and everyone complained how lifeless he was. Now he is on point and he's having fun doing the review... job done... Oh, I'd take the 911 turbo...
