UPDATE: Our review of the Nikon Z50 is now live! ruclips.net/video/J2LaLlRtqyI/видео.html
I have to say I agree with your review, on pretty much all points. I bought a Z50 earlier this week in a kit with the 16-50 lens and FTZ adapter. I currently own and use D850, D500 and D7200 DSLRs and have previously owned a D7500. Performance of the Z50 is right up there with the DSLRs, especially low light/high ISO which seems to be on a par with the D500 and D7500. In terms of size and format, the Z50 is more like a Micro Four Thirds model and is very reminiscent of the Panasonic GX8 that I used to have, but with the superb low light capability that you don't get with MFT cameras. I have done initial tests with a range of Sigma F mount lenses that I have: 10-20 (DX), 17-50 (DX), 18-300 (DX), 105 macro (FX), 100-400 (FX) and all of them seem to work and to autofocus with the Z50 and FTZ adapter. Be careful, though, there is a long list of Nikkor lenses that are not compatible, notably the 'D' type that require AF drive from the camera body, so my Nikon 50mm D is a non-starter.
I have no problem using the pancake lens at F6.3 as a number of my other lenses are also 6.3 at the long end (e.g. 18-300, 100-400, 150-600) and I am used to shooting with them, sometimes with pretty high ISO, on the D7200 and D500 in particular. With the type of low light performance the Z50 offers, this is not a real hindrance, unless really shallow depth of field is required.
I bought the Z50 partly to use as a travel/street photography camera for which is both lightweight and discreet and also to experiment with Nikon mirrorless before committing to the Z6/Z7 family. I will shortly try the Z50 out for nature photography, in comparison with the D500 that I normally use. I look forward to seeing how the AFC copes with 11 frames per second. I have already set up the camera for back-button focus and appropriate focus modes, etc, so it will pretty much mimic the set up pf my DSLRs. The menus are very familiar so it wasn't a chore.
One note of caution though - I see that the FTZ adapter is limited to lenses weighing less than 2lb 13.9 oz / 1300 gm. I will think twice before attaching my 150-600!
It's early days but I must say I am totally impressed with the Z50 so far and it is well ahead of my expectations.
Good review, thank you. I look forward to the next installment.
I use a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary on Z6 with FTZ adapter without any problem. I avoid holding it by the camera body though, using only the lens foot
Seems like viewers like you with the camera agree and those who have not used it may not agree. Z50 has been a very pleasant surprise overall.
A quick question on your last point...the 150-600mm obviously will sit on the tripod holding the weight of the lens, thus I can't see why the weight of the Z50 would be a problem, attached to that lens? Or is it something more 'electronic' that is the issue? I have that lens as well that I use with my D750, thus wouldn't get it if it 'just' won't work!
@@dalewatkins9889
Hi Dale. I'll try to explain.
I am quite sure the 150-600 Sigma will work with the Z50. The issue is about the size and weight of the lens and the torque it can create if held by a single mounting point.
In order to stay within the weight limit of the FTZ adapter (1300 gm), it would be necessary to ensure the lens is always handled in a way that does not put more load on the lens mount. It is not an issue while the lens is on a tripod but, personally, I find it quite difficult to avoid the issue when mounting or de-mounting the lens to/from the tripod, generally carrying the lens around while attached to the camera or, as I do sometimes, hand-holding the 150-600. I use the Sigma 150-600 C which weighs 1930 gm. If you have the Sports version, that weighs a hefty 2860 gm. I do carry my 150-600 C mounted on my D500 or D850 and they seem to cope with the weight but the Z50 and FTZ adapter seem to be more flimsy, and the instructions for the FTZ adapter are clear, so I won't risk it. Incidentally the FTZ adapter is the same for the Z6 and Z7 so the same restriction will apply there. There is no electronic restriction that I am aware of.
Users of the popular Nikkor 200-500 (2300 gm) will have the same issue as will users of the two Tamron 150-600 models.
The other point that comes to mind is that the Z50 body, even with the FTZ adapter included is very light and will not feel balanced with very long and/or heavy lenses. Also, it will not be possible to balance it in a gimbal mount if you use one, whereas the heavier DSLR bodies are ok for that.
I hope that clarifies matters.
Tony
Would you rate Z50 higher than the D7200?
For someone like me, looking to upgrade my D5100, the Z50 with the FTZ adapter for my DX lenses looks like a good path forward into the world of mirrorless cameras.
If AF is sure enough and zippy enough with the adapter, why the F not? If I had DX lenses, it would be a body I'd buy because it's cheap enough to try.
Those are my thoughts, too.
Thats what I'm thinking I have a D5500. It will be nice to see some reviews with DX lenes wit the adaptor on the Z50
My exact sentiments as well. I have the D7100 but want to get into the mirrorless world
DigNap15 I’ve gone from a d5500 to a s6 recently and it’s the best move I’ve ever made..
Nice to see a non-Debbie downer review of the latest Nikon offering. Always appreciate your honesty.
Indeed. If we wanted a ton of views, we'd make a big hate video. We're not afraid to be honest and even upbeat. This camera does a fantastic job, with or without price taken into account.
Sony has bought out most of the YT photo reviewers, and your channel is one of the few remaining that are still objective and impartial. Thank you for your integrity!
I've used LOTS of mirrorless cameras. Both crop and FF. But my main camera was always a bigger and more comfortable and reliable DSLR. Right now, i've got Z50. It is THE best mirrorless crop camera. I mean it. THE best. And now I am selling my last DSLR. Because Z50 will take it's place as my main camera. The mirroless revolution actually happened for me.
The z50 is the best camera under $1000 on the market, that no one is talking about. When the Sony a6400 was released all you seen was reviews.
Agree. Let's just say we checked the Amazon return policy before buying. Used it. Very pleasantly surprised.
It is interesting that no one is talking about it in the youtube realm per se. makes one wonder about advertising money being spent on influencers by some companies and the effect its having on 'reviews' didn't canon mention this fact in their end of year statement? something about changing the way the spend their advert dollars and more to be funnelled into influencers, I think sony has lead the way in that regard. I like this channel - seems to be even tempered and not skewed by company pesos. RUclips camera channels are something of an echo chamber, find myself culling channels because of objectivity concerns.
@@poniatowski3547 I think that the majority if the influencers are brand-independent, but I do think that many opinions are tailored for the maximum amount of views. Negative opinions do better. We try to stay upbeat no matter what and we're happy that Nikon built the Z50 the way that we did. We love the Sony a7R IV and purchased one, as have some other youtubers. It's flat out the best mirrorless camera we've used. I think if Canon tries to one-up Sony, that will be more effective than trying to buy opinions.
Poniatowski well said. Sony releases an incremental update to the a6300, the a6400, and for three months I can’t go on RUclips without a review. Nikon releases their first mirrorless APSC camera and nothing. I’m not bashing Sony, but it seems that a brand new camera and lineup from the second largest camera manufacturer seems more interesting than a spec bump on a three year old camera.
@@scraymond5597 I disagree somewhat with you in that regard. I too think the A7IV is a benchmark camera, but when a company as big as Canon states that they need to spend more on influencers 'cause that sells cameras I think the proof is there. I enjoy your channel because you guys come across as honest, knowledgeable and genuine - don't lose that. Have a great day.
I got the z50 after just a few minutes of playing with it in the store. It's really fantastic, I don't know why so many people are talking smack. One review said the sensor is old from the d500. The d500 had a great sensor so what the problem?
Yep. It seems like a Z7 with a smaller sensor, much in the way that the D500 is a D850 with a smaller sensor. Obviously, that is one difference. Can't seem to find the problems with the Z50. It's checking all the boxes for us.
Most of YT photo channels are bought out by Sony. SnapChick is one of the few remaining objective and impartial ones.
Very nice initial review from a very happy Z7 & Z6 shooter. I've seen the negative reviews on the Z50 and they missed the entire point of the camera, which you have so very well pointed out.
Much appreciated
Peter
That tony northup reference at the end was gold !
What reference
I agree and in fact this review and the negative and incomplete review hinted at has made me seriously consider the Z50 as a second camera to my D500. Hmmm I might even use as my main camera with the FTZ adapter ;-)
@@geoffprotheroe1201 I actually owned the Z50 and I loved it. Great camera. period
Hi! Thank you for sharing. I spent over an hour to two in the shop deliberating over teh Z50 and Z6/7 for my video production. The Z50 won over due to its light weight and simple adaptation to any gimbal. The video quality is amazing and images amazingly sharp for the price point. I had a ton of FX lens, but end up using the kit lens that came along with it. The FTZ mount bring the flexibility of using the FX lens sacrificing some crop factor, but the sharpness as you have mentioned rightly didn’t disappoint. Wanted to upgrade to Z7 to fully apply my FX lens collection, but after watching your video, I was truly convince to stick around longer until the next better FX mirrorless from Nikon is released. Thank you again.
Z50 is in my cart to pair with my z7 once my old equipment sells off. Looking forward to having.
I don't own a Z6 of Z7, but I find the Z50 a perfect companion to my D7200. And I agree: having a choice of fast lenses at your disposal makes this a capable professional set.
Yup. That's the Z50 paradox... inexpensive body that needs expensive lenses to thrive.
@@scraymond5597 you can buy an adapter and use alll the cheap G series lenses.
@@scraymond5597 you can buy an adapter and use alll the cheap G series lenses (that I already own). Just adding to what G. Jax said.
Most sensible Z50 review on RUclips. Kudos for being honest!
BTW, I'm getting terrific results from the two kit lenses. I really like them.
Me too.
Hi Raymond and Leigh, always enjoy your content, honestly, knowledge and expertise! Z50 looks great! Personally, for me, I think the Z7 is the superior camera as it can offer both full frame and cropped images with ample resolution. Also, the fact that it has IBIS is critical for me. Im older and not as steady as I used to be so it is a huge factor. When I have a body and lens sans VR I can definitely notice a huge difference with camera shake. I also notice a marked difference when using a native lens on the Z7 vs. an adapted f mount lens with VR in terms of stabilization performance. Just my take and thanks for the opportunity! Continued success to you! best, Rick, Phoenix (Ahwatukee) Arizona
As an owner of the Z7 Z6 and the Z50 let’s be real here. The Z50 has nothing on the Z7 the Z7 is a professional photo camera and the z50 is an entry level for those wanting to get into photography and start with a mirrorless set up.
The z50 is not only an entry level camera for those wanting to get into photography, IT'S ALSO A CAPABLE GEAR FOR PROFESSIONALS LOOKING FOR A VERY PORTABLE COMPACT SYSTEM. I've been shooting full frame since high school using my dads Pentax ME Super film SLR. Over the years, I've used Canon, Minolta, Olympus, Sony Mirrorless, and lastly my Lumix s1 and s1R. As I age, my priority is portability and weight. I found out during these years that all modern cameras have awesome capability, even the low end models. I'm researching the Z50 and Oly OMD em5 iii as my portable choice. Yes, I might miss my killer resolution and detail of my Lumix s1R, I might miss the low light capability of my Lumix s1. But they are not killer handicap. The good thing is how I see have improved over these years, I believe my eyes will make up for any little deficiency, or athe least bridge the gap.
😂
Any other two people making these statements & I close the video. Your wife & you have earned my ear on matters like this and I appreciate your insight. I’m ‘in the market’ right now for an interchangeable lens setup. I love my X100V but I have to work too hard to get Fuji AF to do what I want with action/moving family shots. I’m trying the A6600 right now & love the AF but when I bring my photos into LR from the Sony it’s blah on colors for the most part. Not all the time. I’ve considered the Z6ii for lowlight performance but I don’t need FF & AP-C actually works better for my use. I rarely need wider.. I often want closer. The Z50 wasn’t even on my radar until researching the Z6. I also don’t want XQD. expensive and extra flow steps. The Z50 looks like the best bargain AND having owned the D500 & D7500 I KNOW I love the colors. Thank you for this video. I do need to hit joy up for advice on a 35mm to pair with it. I think I want to go FX/FD but would prefer not to be HUGE. Thank you for any insight you can provide.
The Daytona cobra you shot was responsible for the 70 mph speed limit in the UK, they tested this car on the M1 motorway where it reached 175mph, before racing it at Le Mans . A newspaper headlined this and the government brought out a 70mph speed limit on British roads.
Yay, thank you for pointing out the wide angle functionality for the full frame. Kudos to you. This is highly overlooked in my opinion.
I don't understand how a full frame camera (at least 2/3 stop better ISO), better ergonomics, superb IBIS, superior viewfinder etc be superseded by the z50. I am not saying the z50 is not good, in fact I think it is very good, but dethroning the z6, which I think is better than the z7 (for my use), I think is exaggerated.
I expect my opinion to be unpopular, but it is my honest, unexaggerated opinion, for the reasons outlined in the video. For example, The Z 50 is half the price of the Z 6 and for me, the Z 50 does the same or better, depending on what I'm shooting. For telephoto w/cropping, the Z 50 is functionally the same as a Z 7. Your opinion is no less valuable than mine. Just different perspectives.
clicks
@@luxinterna3370 Many more clicks if we said it was awful. Instead, we just talk about how we actually feel, which can seem like an unusual thing for a youtube video.
I agree. I have a Z6 and use it for macro, portraiture, low light landscape, manual lens usage, -and it’s perfect for that! I also have a D7100 (DX) that handles sports really well, but I do use the slomo vid capabilities of the Z6 in those situations a lot now. There’s a lot of reasons why the Z6 & Z7 are the top of the line, right now. I think the Z50 is a good choice to upgrade a DX system to. However, if you are moving up in capabilities as a Tog, then Z6 is a great value/way to go, IMHO.
This is exactly why I picked up a Z50. I have always been a Nikon shooter so I have a wide variety of lenses and just need the FTZ adapter. I might pick up the 14-30 Z lens too. I'll have to look into it more. Thanks.
Thank you Raymond--That's great information and nice to hear all the good qualities of the z50. I think it will be my next purchase.
SnapChick, SnapGuy, the Nordrups should watch your video.
Yessss!!! I stopped following them after their super bios "big mistake" video
Nah, 'Sony' Northrop and his wife are too busy counting shill dollars from the four-letter electronic company.
@@ProxodilMimo Much like Jared Polin...dropping his Nikon gear...so he says.
Me too!
The Z6 has had auto-exposure at 12 FPS since last May, so it is the fastest of the three. I have the Z6 and the Z50 and I love them both. I do a lot of longer-exposure astrophotography, and the Z6 beats the Z7 hands down on that front. But my Z50 is astro-modified, and so far it performs very well for a DX camera. Bottom line, I agree with you on the Z50, but even if they were the same price, I’d take the Z6 over the Z7.
What about colors on Z6? Z6 use the matrix similar to d750 which has not good color. A little bit yellow... 😏
good review, great job i agree mostly, but you need to mention what an amazing video canera it is for cinematographer on a gimbal, my z50 lives comfortably on my crane 2 all day long and the video quality while not as good as the z6 is still an incredible performer!!
I own a D5300 with a few beginner lenses. I'm only a hobbyist and was looking to upgrade to the Z6. Should I purchase the Z50 and used the cash saved for accessories?
It’s what I did and I’m having a great time using the Z50, it’s a great camera!
Thank you for your informative review. Did you try the z50 with sigma 2.8 17-50? I will appreciate your opinion about the combination. Thanks!
Man I love those lotus f1 cars.
I love my Nikon z50, in fact love it so much I even started to do content on it. This camera is so special. it takes the best out of people.
I want a 35mm f/2 pancake on this camera.
That is something I would buy.
pancakes in general for the Z mount - YES PLEASE!. I still shoot my F3 with the 50mm 1.8 AIS pancake
I would grab that lens in a snap!
barmalini 28mm f/2 for me without any visible field curvature please
The are working on 28 and 40 mm 2.8 pancakes according to the roadmap.
Well you sold me.... another good review on the Z50. I am getting on in the next week.
I agree with you 100%. And this is exactly the same experience I had with my older D5500. I loved my Nikon D5500 with DX glass, but it got better when I added my FX lenses. When I put my FX 24-120mm f4 or 50mm FX f1.4 on the D5500 I could hardly tell the difference between the D750 and D5500. I have put my 24-70 f4 Z S lens and 50mm f1.8 Z S lens on the Z50 and it makes a similar difference.
I am in the same boat with the Z 50 vs Z 7. The Z 50 is so light and easy to use that I tend to grab it unless I need 47mega pixels. The Z 50 also has a built in flash that I like using. It works quite well. As I have spent more time using the Z 50 kit lenses I have improved results with them. Ken Rockwell has tested the Z 50 and has some really good sample photos on his blog.
I really like the new Z 50 and for me it is the perfect replacement for my D5500 DSLR. Final point. I am left eye dominant and the center viewfinder works for me better (a lot better) than left side viewfinder cameras.
a left eye dominant here too. totally agree with you.
Another left-eye shooter here. 2 weeks away from return deadline, but loving Z50 so far. A little concerned about quality and sharpness of the 16-50, but seems pretty good so far. You mentioned as you spend more time using the kit lenses your results have improved. Can you provide more details about that? What changes did you make too improve your results? Thanks!
@@charlesb.2585 I stopped being lazy and put the camera on a light tripod for plant and flower macros. And I used the pin point AF setting. This is a big plus for me on Nikons. And I read the Ken Rockwell review at KenRockwell.com and got some tips from Ken. He also has some sample photos on his web site that impress. I also used his idea to pop up the built in flash to highlight subjects. I also have the FTZ adaptor I have not used yet. I am thinking about getting at least one DX lens from Nikon before their sale ends. I have owned two of the DX 35mm f1.8 and that is a sharp low cost lens. They also have a 40mm macro I would like to have. And there is a super wide DX zoom. All on sale right now. I am thinking about buying a couple of those and then getting the Z lenses for DX when they come out. I also have put my two Z S lenses on the Z 50. With either the 24-70 or the 50mm Z S the results are really exceptional.
R Nuttmann Thanks for the reply! I was also looking at getting the 35 DX on sale. I have a 50mm 1.8 D lens that I love - inexpensive and sharp, but it it is a screwdriver lens that won’t autofocus on the FTZ adapter. So I was also looking at the AF-S 50mm 1.8 G on sale also. How did your other Z lenses work when you put them on the Z50 without IBIS? Any balance issues with the larger Z lenses?
My thought about the kit lens: I recently made a comparison between the16-50mm and the Nikon 35mm dx 1.8g f mount lens with the same focal length aperture iso and shutter speed. The z50 kit lens delivers better sharpness and image quality than the legendery 1.8g! I think that Nikon did an amazing job with this camera/ lens combo. Every single wannabe professional photographer trying to tell that this is a crappy camera without having real experience with it.
Ya thats usually the case. Peoples pride gets in the way and its their way of protecting their purchase. Here is a news flash Everything gets better and cameras become old news. Lenses are forever
@@MrDaveB123 Absolutely agree. Has anyone heard owners of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley, BMW cars etc complained their cars are crappy? I have never heard of.
Excellent video. I recently purchased the Z50 about a week ago and I must say so far I’m really liking it. I didn’t purchase any Z lenses but bought the FTZ adapter instead as I have many Nikon lenses. I currently own a Nikon D7200 and really like it but now I think the Z50 will be the one I grab more often. I own my beloved Nikkor 200-500mm lens and adapted it to the Z50 and it works perfectly! What I’m especially loving is the ergonomics, touch screen and the silent shooting option...no more disturbing my bird friends!
Yes, silence is golden with the Z 50 and the 200-500. Keeps the rabbits/animals doing their thing instead of shutter sound distracting them.
@@scraymond5597 Given the smaller body of the Z 50, how is the front-to-back balance with the 200-500 attached?
@@johnnym3ma You basically hold the lens with your left hand while the camera body floats behind it.
@@scraymond5597 Thanks. Just wanted to make sure that weight of the lens wouldn't be too much given what Nikon says on their FTZ instructions (When using the adapter with lenses weighing over 1300 g, support the lens when holding the camera and do not use the camera strap. Failure to observe these precautions could damage the camera lens mount). Given that the 200-500 weighs 2300 g, I'll just have to make sure I always support it by the lens when carrying it.
Looking forward to the complete review. You two are great!
@@johnnym3ma Thanks, and good info on the adapter rating. Honestly, I didn't think about the rating of the mount, rather it's just difficult to move around without holding the lens. It becomes intuitive very quickly to hold the lens rather than the camera. If you move the tripod collar from the bottom to the top, it becomes a nice carrying handle. Got that tip from a Nikon tech.
Nice video. I’m not sure why you would want to adapt F mount lenses and buy expensive full frame z mount lenses to make the camera come alive. By adapting f mount you give up the small form factor ( what about balance? The 17-55 is heavy!) and with expensive z mount lenses you are losing out on the value aspect of the camera. The solution is for Nikon to provide decent DX lenses.
Z7 + DX 16-50 lens, best of both worlds, 19m pixels, perfect walk around combo. When getting serious shots, change to other Z lenses or FTZ.
How does the z50 compare to the Z6 and Z7 for colour ? Also , would it have the same performance High ISO and colours as D500? Thanks and great video. Thumbs up 👍
i have z50+FTZ+Nikkor DX 35mm f1.8, works very good for potrait both indoor and outdoor...
"The z6 has no place in the line up anymore"
Lol what?
It has better low light capabilities than any other Nikon MILC or Sony FF milc except for the 7Sii.
Has the BEST video abilities and IMO the best FF camera under $2500.
Wtf are you talking about?
Didn't expect my opinion to be popular.
I guess they're more on stills than video
I considered it. However, I'm going to put the $1600CAD (Z50 + 2 lenses) towards a second Z6 body, now on sale for $2000CAD.
You mentioned that full frame large aperture lenses bring this camera alive. Is that referring to adapted lens also such as the Nikon FX 50mm 1.8 and Tamron 45mm 1.8 VC and/or just Z lenses?
Very nice comparison and you did a great job explaining your views. Keep up the good work! I own the z7 and my z50 is supposed to be delivered today!
Could you try the sigma zooms 50 150 2.8 and 17 50 2.8 (or 18-35 1.8) just to see how it performs?
Is the Z50 a good pairing with the Z5? or does it make more sense to just get a second Z5? thanks for the video!
Wise opinion! I'm thinking pairing my D750 with a Z50 to get benefit of the 16-50 kit lens compactness, but also of my F-mount gear. Great versatility, and it will not cost me much as a single Z6.
My issue with crop sensors, is the wide angle lenses. So if you need telephoto functions - go for the z50, I have 0 problems with that, but if you need wide angles, the z6 provides IBIS, wider viewing angles, better ISO performance, better view finder, better quality video and better battery life along with better ergonomics. This subject is very specific, and I can see why you would replace the z6, since you already have another full frame (z7) and you seem interested in telephoto capabilities, but this kind of videos sometimes send the wrong massage. All the Z cameras are great, but which is better is depending on the person behind it, and his needs.
The Z50 is a great fun camera! I love the new Z lenses. Also the Z50 is so light and small, that I will take it anywhere! Whereas I always seem to hesitate with the D7500 because if it’s weight and size. Also, I find the Z50 very fast and snappy. The live view is heaps better than DSLRs.
I agree with you the kit lens is also so sharp that this camera is so perfect. Will get one soon.
Would it be possible to verify z50 capability to focus with tamron 100-400?
Great video!
I've got a D5600 and I'd like to go Z mirrorless series
Its hard to chose between the Z50 and the others.
What is your view about getting bokeh for portraits on the Z50?
That is one thing I'd love to be able to do that I can't now!
I definitely would love to see the comparison between the D500 and Z50. As I shoot with my D7100, I wonder if I'd get better performance switching to FX (D610/750), or keep with DX and up the shooting performance. The Z50 would definitely help if I wanted to transition into any kind of video work, but the D500 would give me better transition with other equipment (specifically the batteries, but also the included external motor for legacy lenses like my Nikkor 80-200 f2.8D).
I REALLY like the size of the Z50. If Nikon included IBIS, it probably would have been a no-brainier for me. However, the fact that it doesn't makes me think that a D500 or D610 would be a better suited upgrade for my use (especially looking at the used markets).
Remember - that D500 nor D610 do not have IBIS either. Z 50 worked great with the VR in those F mount adapted 200-500 shots.
Oh yes, @@scraymond5597 I realize this. For me it wasn't whether or not D500/610 does or does not have IBIS, but whether or not Nikon would add enough features in the Z 50 for me to even consider an upgrade (or when the time to upgrade comes, what should I be looking at).
As we all know, Nikon (and Canon of course) is at a pivotal moment as each company transitions to mirrorless. I'm curious as to what Nikon brings to the table that can convince the DSLR majority to switch to their new system. I'm excited for how Nikon develops the Z line, but also concerned that they're not doing enough to stand out from a similar performing DSLR.
I look forward to your comparison (if you do one) and maybe you'll be the ones that show me why the Z 50 is the camera to get c:
@@7wv5 Will publish an intense comparison. D500 will win the day for fast action like sports and tricky wildlife. Z50 will win for smaller size and bringing everywhere. Both are winners.
@@7wv5 For me the Z 50 is much better for video than the DSLRs and I get better exposure with an EVF due to being able to see the histogram before touching the button. I also like an EVF for using M manual setting. I adjust the exposure until I see what I want in the viewfinder.
I'd say for anything but video, going from the D500 to the Z50 would be a substantial downgrade. Build quality, ergonomics, lens selection, autofocus, reliability - all significantly higher on the D500.
Thanks for sharing... Enjoyed your video... I still have & use my D500 so I won't be changing just yet..
Did you checkout the burst rate in 4 bit raw yet? Can not seem to find any marks for that online?
Will show it off in the full review. It's fast, but the buffer does fill up in a couple of seconds. We will test with a very fast memory card like Sony Tough 300mb/s. Only tested the burst with old sandisk 30mb/s so far.
Agree. The only minor complaint I have with the Z50 is battery capacity when I flip through the menus. Not really a big deal.
That's a brave opinion to put out there. A lot of photography enthusiasts seem to talk down on cheaper gear to validate the cold hard cash they spent on their stuff. I'm still surprised about the quality every time I open a 12 year old photo from a Nikon D40. I'm currently considering a Z50 because my D7000 is a bit heavy while traveling. The only thing that's holding me back is the feeling that they will release a Z70 that will be to the Z50 that the D7xxx was to the D5xxx. So some more buttons, LCD on the top and so on. The Z6/7 are interesting, but I can't see myself really investing in heavy and expensive FX lenses.
Looking forward to the D500/Z50 Comparison!
real question: Why did you buy all 3? also super real question is the z50 and z6 similar enough in size? I want to buy this leather case for my z6 but they selling it for z50
Awesome video, I'm thinking about buying the z50 as my d3400 recently got water damaged. How do you know which fmount lenses will work with it? Could you send a link or post a list of the lenses that work? Mainly thinking about my 40mm 2.8 macro that is my go to lense
Thanks! If you have the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens, it will work. If you have other lenses you want to check, Ken Rockwell has a great reference site for the FTZ... www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/lenses/ftz.htm :)
I'm going to get the twin lens kit for my daughter. I would consider it for myself if it had IBIS but with my S lenses there is no lens stabilisation. With the FTZ and VR lenses I take it that the VR still works? Looking forward to the full review and the D500 comparison.
Yes, VR works great on our F mount lenses. Honestly, the no IBIS really doesn't seem like an issue, except for telephoto, where the F mount lenses, at least, do have VR. Don't get me wrong, I like that the Z6 and Z7 have IBIS, but for me, it's nothing close to a show-stopper for the Z50.
Been wondering if I should adopt the Z50 as a backup to my Z6?
So im new to owning a camera and came into possession of the z 50 and I just bought the ftz adapter for it. My question is, what are the lenses that are compatible with the adapter?
There are many.
Nice review. Is there much difference in the detail of landscapes between the Z6 and 7?
About 16 megapixels of difference, yeah
How is image frm Z50 taken on print out
good points, haven't seen it this way, but you are right. greetings from Germany and my Leica
Hey SnapChick, have you updated Z6 firmware to V2.0 or 2.1 yet? You'll find the 5.5fps is no longer a limitation for exposure / autofocus.
How's the AF on the z50? Is it better than on the z6?
Identical
Tony Northrop did a video suggesting that the Z50 should have just been made a mirrorless f mount system, I’m curious your thoughts on that? Would it have been a better more well rounded package to have gone that way?
I could come up with a million "shoulds," some probably would also be "good." I like to deal with "dids" and I think Nikon did make a great camera with the Z 50 as it is. Z mount is clearly Nikon's path forward.
Tony seems to have difficulties with understanding what a flange distance is. No one wants a compact camera with 46mm void between the sensor and mount flange.
Drop a back screen and god forbid an ibis into it, and you will have a 6cm thick brick. And it is not including lens
Tony Northrup is a shill for Canon and Sony so of course he would suggest a ridiculous idea like that.
The Snapchick really snapped on this.
I like the z50 but not getting rid of my Z6. Curious about the D500 comparison as I just don't see it de-throning the mighty D500.
Perhaps your opinion is not as unpopular as you may think? The Z50 is selling well in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA): Sixty Eight (68) per cent of the population
of Canada live in the G.T.A. : Excellent review: GREAT perspectives.
Thank you for this video, really helpful. I have been considering upgrading my old Nikon D7200 for about 6 months and finally did it. My new Z50 arrives tomorrow with the FTZ adapter so I can keep my kit lens, 55-200 and my 35mm 1,8 prime (especially looking forward to that on the front).
@ Alan SW UK Congrats. Might want to update your 50 to 200mm with the 50 to 250mm Z lens. I had the AF-S 50 to 200mm, but sold it after buying a refurbished AF-P 70 to 300mm, which was Superior in I.Q. AF and speed . 50 to 250mm Z lens is sharper yet.!
Is the color science of Nikon DSLR the same as the mirrorless nikons?
Just got my Z50 + FTZ and it's a great little rig.
Can Printout Taken in Z50 Vs Z60 comparison done
Well done Raymond...truly, hard to beat at the price! I was hoping for a D850 price decrease initially, but I may be better to keep my D750 and go with a Z5...we'll see how that pans out. Great review...oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks Dale. The Z50 is like a sneaky deep discount on a Z7.
@@scraymond5597 - Do you feel that minus the in body stabilization makes for a negative factor with the Z50 Raymond? Apparently not all FX lenses will work with the adapter, thus a buyer 'might' possibly buy the Z50 and think all FX lenses will work, yet that's not the case, and these days we know there are lenses out there with no VR so adding a non-IBIS camera with no VR lenses would lead to a (no pun intended) not a pretty picture! Making me wonder if the Z6 would be a better buy, even though it's twice the price?
Thank you for your great content!! most informative.. I am waiting for the Z50 in South Africa, I would like to try out video a bit more, I have 6 Nikon DSLR's and 14 lenses so I don't really want to move to another brand, My D500's are beasts at wildlife and Sport, excellent AF in photo mode ONLY. Is the Z50s Video AF better than the Nikon DSLR's?? I don't mind slow focus as long as it doesn't hunt back and forth....
End of the day full frame >> dx so unless you’re buying for budget or you want the smallest kit possible although every lens becomes big with the ftz adapter I couldn’t or wouldn’t recommend the z50 over the z6. Especially as a upgrade from a dx dslr. But the z50 is a fantastic camera. Nikon is absolutely killing it . But the freedom of full frame where you can go into dx mode is undefeated
I was so looking forward to this camera and can live without ibis and realize lens choice limited for now . I was concerned with the recent Dpreview comparison of this cam to Sony and Canon at same price point and it came last in image quality and they commented that lenses felt plasticky. Curious that we are not seeing this camera generally reviewed? Any thoughts?
My theory is that Sony has paid off most of YT reviewers so that they either don't review competing products, or do so with negative intent.
I think there is something special about this z50 20mp sensor. Not sure if it's BSI. I agree boring with Nikon's apsc lenses. However viltrox saved it for me with their z apsc line up. I purchased a z30 for blogging and took a low light photo and said WHAT. I've experienced image quality I have not seen on Fujifilm, canon, Panasonic M43. Now I'm thinking about getting the Z50 because of the EVF. I think as time goes by people will desire this 20.09mp sensor. There is just something with the images.
Thanks for your review
Nikon should make a new aps-c with IBIS. I think there will be a market for that one. And get more DX Z lenses out. I use a Z6 but I am recommending a Z50 to people who just start out with photography.
While the kit lens is nice, it would be much more compelling with still relatively compact low lig ht lens like the fuji 18-50 2.8-4, or a single 23mm or 35mm 1.8 dx lens in the lineup. EN-EL15 compatibility would have been greatly appreciated as well, even with a larger grip.
Do you think an XT3 competitor would be a smart move from nikon? Z6 body, APSC with better video options, maybe 10bit 4k internal and improved IBIS? It would be a much easier sell to a Z6 user like myself.
Z50 vs riii? Honestly does this mean we no longer need full frame for 20mp?
Same as comparison between D850 and D500. In many if not most cases you cannot tell the difference when viewing except when doing big prints.
Raymond.. This is the first time I've watched one of your video's and it was very informative and well thought out.
I have a Z50 and I have a love/hate relationship with it and have considered selling it since it has sat for months.
I liked that you didn't bash it like some youtube channels does.
Again great video.
Best wishes
Duane
Thanks Duane!!! Our Z50 has sat a lot because we have been fortunate to be able to review some fantastic gear, so we've had little time to use our own gear. But with so much capability in such a small package, it is definitely still a part of the collection!

Even though I have been paid for photography work and have had several photos printed in the paper I consider myself a pro-amateur and its a hobby for me.
My photography consists a lot of volunteering my photography skills for the local fire department and for my own wildlife, photojournalism, scenery, and people.
Besides the Z50 I also have the D810, D7100, D3300, two P900s, D40, D50 so it's time to get rid of old gear.
I always thought I wanted a D500 for the type of photography that I do but still wonder if the Z50 should take the place of me getting a D500?
Best wishes
Duane
Absolutely love your open and honest opinion not just following the herd.
I'm an avid nikon professional who still even uses on professional shoots my D 700 strongly considering ending the Z50 as a camera to always have with me as well as its small size to work for video on gimbals.
Have you guys done a video on what are the best lenses to pair with nikon cameras when you're putting them on a gimbal? For example those that have internal focusing to maintain balance.
Enjoyed your review on this. Off to the review now. Subscribed.
Love both the Z50 and V1.
Thank you for this review. As this seems to be one of the honest reviews of this camera. I am eager to watch your video that will compare the IBIS of Z6 and Z7 vs the electronic stabilization of this lil dude. Also very interested in knowing how well this will hold up to the D500.
Check out The Monochrome Memoirs channel, the guy is a wedding photographer who strictly uses Z6 cameras and the Z50. Very knowledgeable about both and has a good understanding of how both work.
Thank you for this good Video! Now I am looking for small APS-C camera and I think the Z50 could be a great camera for me. The only think is that I must cotton up with the FTZ adapter. Thank you!
No, it’s really good! I was openly opposed to it all, but after picking it up, what a nice camera.
No IBIS.. Not sure why you would go to a mirrorless system over a DSLR then. Plenty of better new and used of equal or lesser price options in the DSLR market that would be better options than the Z50 IMO. Heck, you can buy a Sony A7 II new for the same price as the Z50.. Apples and horseshoe comparison, but food for thought. Great info and video. learned lots..
I am sure it is an excellent camera body. And being Nikon, top notch, but …..
As you mentioned, the crop is negligible when bringing a z7 to z50 size. No IBS unless it is built into the lens.
Things left out.. the z7 has weather sealing, if you shoot your photos in camera playing to your crop/lens you don't need to worry about the crop factor, z7 is more customizable in terms of buttons, auto focus is superior, top screen, no bl sensor, far better ISO /dynamic range, XQD/CF express vs SD cards, focus areas 209 vs 493, shutter speed 4000 vs 8000, better LCD screen by double the resolution.
Just as a start. While I have never used the Z50, I shoot with a D850, a Z6 and a Z7ii .. the specs are just not there to say the Z50 is better than the Z7.
Yes.. everyone uses their camera differently and for different things. But, as an overall statement, the Z50 is NOT better than the Z7. Again, I am sure it is a very capable camera and takes fantastic images in the right hands. For an entry level photographer or someone who doesn't shoot much this looks to be a very capable body. Again though.. it is not even close to the Z7.
Superb review. Really thought-provoking, and makes sense.
As a Sony shooter I wish there was an A6xxx APSC body that had a similar form factor.
I image it’s a great little camera.
I use my FX primes on my D500, but very much enjoy the 18-55 and 70-300mm AF-P lenses. They are incredibly fast and accurate. I'd like to see how these Z DX lenses compare especially with some moderate fast action shots like your dog running around...the usual. With my 70-300mm I can get the last frames in focus right up to the camera in pretty much any type of lighting. I rarely shoot in high speed sequential though- 7 FPS is plenty. I'm reading that the MTF charts for these lenses indicate about a 10-20% improvement over F mounts AF-P DX lenses. Not too bad. If the Z50 and these two lenses can offer decent AF if not exceptional, then I'd consider it. It is small after all and the 4k full sensor read out a nice touch. No one has really done an extensive AF review yet. Here's hoping!
Who said aps-c is no good? I have a fuji XH1 and luuuuuuv it. I also think the z50 will save Nikon, just hurry up with more dedicated aps-c lenses! Good impartial review and glad you like yr z50!
Where is that museum? A set of stunning car shot's.
Phoenix Art Museum. Amazing exhibit through March 15, 2020.
I thought this was her. 100 percent.
Couldn’t even focus on the the review 😂
The style of speaking is the same. Is he her brother?
Hi I use a D850 & D500 but have been looking for an ideal carry anywhere to replace my Nikon V1/V2 and was delighted to see the Z50 including lens and adapter advertised in the UK for less than £1000 (GB Pounds)) I visited my local dealer and was very impressed with the Z50, trying it in the street with the 16-50 lit lens. I also tried my own Nikon 16-80 2.8 -f4 dx vr.
I was ready to purchase but on looking at the images on my monitor I realized that the full size 16-80 produced sharper images across the frame, so much better than this example of the kit lens. If I purchased the Z50 I would be very tempted to keep the larger lens on constantly, thus not taking advantage of the small sized camera. The price difference between the Z6 Kit and the Z50 at the moment is about £700 and I am tempted to go for that, possibly ditching the D850 or D500 later. I do have a couple of M Leica lens and several non VR Nikons as well, all very complicated what o you think please?
