I don't think you can underestimate the aesthetics I love the styling of the ZFC and am sure it will encourage me to take it more places so I will be using my camera more
It's great that Fuji and now Nikon get this! High-end enthusiasts love the hobby not just because you can show your friends and family pretty pictures, but because the experience of taking pictures is amazing. DSLR-type controls are wonderful fun, but the retro style gives enthusiasts something different. It's a great time to be a hobby photographer.
Right. I got the Z fc solely for the esthetics. I think the Z50 looks ugly and it's worth $100 to me to have the chrome top with dials even though I'll never touch them.
@@Cleverconveyence I haven't changed my mind. I like the camera and it works very well, but I still control exposure time with the back dial. It's fun too.
If I was looking for just the body, the Zfc might edge out the Z50. But, if I were looking for a kit, the Z50 2 lens kit + FTZ is still an unreal value at roughly the same price (literally the same price in the US) as the Zfc+28mm kit. I already have and use the Z50, I don't think i'll be upgrading until a Z90 exists, or a Z7 floats by me real cheap.
I have a Z5 and a Z50. The smaller one is very nice to have when I want to keep size and weight down. I like the retro look of the Zfc, but I'd miss the battery grip ergonomics and the U1 and U2 modes on the top dial. I really wouldn't want to give up either of those. The style of the older cameras is a very cool thing, but I think the world of ergonomics has moved on. By the way, why do we only have U1, U2 and maybe U3? Why not press a button and spin a dial to scroll through dozens of user modes, with customized names? It would just be a firmware change. Hardly cost them anything to add to our cameras. Am I the only person who thinks this would be a fantastic feature? Matt, you're a Nikon connected influencer. How about promoting this feature to them? Please?
"Why not press a button and spin a dial to scroll through dozens of user modes, with customized names? It would just be a firmware change. Hardly cost them anything to add to our cameras." That's exactly the reason why manufacturers don't build in features like that. They would only sell customers a camera once, the customers would configure their most used features exactly to their needs and workflow (or have them configured) and that's the end of the story. Another example: The AF hardware system in the Z-fc is the same as in the Z50, but the AF in the Z-fc performes slightly better, picks up objects a little quicker in bad light, has a face and eye detection in video mode etc. Bringing those features and improvements to the Z50 would just require Nikon to provide a little firmware update to the Z50 customers. But they just don't do that because they would rob themselves of an opportunity to sell the more expensive Z-fc if the cheaper Z50 received all the "new" features of the Z-fc. Customers always believe that manufacturers put customers' interests first. But manufacturers just don't. They put themselves and their shareholders and investors first, not their customers.
I love shooting with my z50 all the time. The picture quality, function buttons, user settings, and ergonomics are great. Slightly better AF in low light and a fully articulating screen for hard to shoot angles would make this camera perfect for me.
Yes outdoor fill is a very good point Geno. : ) And I think I don't use it much these days due to Nikons amazing dynamic range .... Of course a flash can never be fully replaced. Cheers Matt
Yes, me too! (if you ment AF and Flippy of the Zfc) I would also add charging while shooting and the IBIS. Would pay a lot for that. I currently have both Z50 and Zfc but would trade both or at least the Zfc for the upgraded version of Z50. Maybe it would be wise to leave Z50 as second/backup though. Zfc is good but the ergonomics is just annoying even with a grip compared to Z50 which is near perfect to my hands.
@@EvilRubberBiscuit For what "time being"? Nikon will never build such a DSLM, because they want to phase out the "outdated" and too much competed DX sensors and get customers to buy their much more profitable FX cameras. Basically all their products clearly point in that direction, even their DX cameras carry a "Don't buy me, buy a Z6 II, Z7 II or Z9" label. I mean: Nikon has managed to offer two rather mediocre DX cameras in three years, one expensive yet quite slow travel zoom plus two very slow all-plastic zooms as the only dedicated Z lenses with a built-in image stabiliser. That's Nikon's way of telling you to either "Go FX or go f--- yourself!" My reply to Nikon's polite suggestion was to purchase a Fujifilm X-S10 with two very decent lenses, the XF18-55mm/2.8-4 OS and the XF55-200mm/3.5-4.8 OS. 😛
I'm still using the Dƒ; I was pleasantly surprised to find that it prints to 17x22 paper flawlessly with just 16 mp. I use my AfD lenses with aperture rings; too late for Nikon to go back to aperture rings. And the Dƒ is among Nikon's last "Made in Japan" cameras.
I had the z50 and loved it dearly. I got too caught up in the FF debacle.. and moved all the way to the z6ii which I do love to bits however don’t believe it was needed for my photography. Just being honest.
@@MattIrwinPhotography oh I agree Matt, I’ve only started my photography journey a year and a half ago. Started with the d3100 all the way to the z6ii I love it but know I would have been better off saving and learning and then ramp up as needed. Just my opinion of course and my path.
As a somewhat "advanced" amateur with broad needs for a hobbyist, I found the Z50 to be not enough for me. I was waiting for a Z70 or whatever might come to be the mirrorless D7x00 or even D500. But the experience of taking pictures I think would be qualitatively different with a dials-first retro style body like the Zfc (or a Fujifilm) and for a certain type of photography I think that might be perfect, at least for me. Slow, contemplative, emphasis on the experience rather than capturing fast action or photojournalism-type images. Plus there's the amazingly tiny size! A Zfc might actually be a very nice companion for my D7500.
Matt I want to express my appreciation for your content. I am not a hater on your channel or Nikon but very concerned with Nikon. Thanks for taking the time to be positive - I hope Nikon hears the positive message collectively.
I bought the Z 50 but I did not know about the Z fc until your video as I am a social worker and just a hobby photographer. But I still think it hasn't been a bad choice. The pictures are great and it's perfect for what I do mainly street photography / graffitties and stuff! It is so light and small and always with me! And still better than the iPhone which is decent I know but there I am unable to change lenses as you know so limited in terms of flexibility!
I already have the Z50, so I won't be buying the Zfc. Like to see, Nikon upgrade the firmware on z50 to give the same video features as the Zfc. Great comparison; look forward to your next video.
In my view a true Nikon FM for the 21st century. It's so much better looking than the Df was. Mirrorless helped making a body that mimiks the ikonic FM. I only miss one thing, that it would be a FX instead of DX that would be so cool. Follows your youtube channel regularly. Nice to have a Pro photographer that reviews and views camera's and the camera world. And to top it of a Pro that doesn't diss Nikon. Keep it up! :-)
Even though there's no need for another crop sensor camera in my bag, the Z fc is such an interesting little camera that after it's been around for a year or so and Nikon puts them on sale, it will be difficult for me to resist.
I use pop up flash all the time on vacation for family photos at sunset. I was so excited for the Zfc but that's totally a deal killer for me. I also find that flash is super helpful for indoors when the lighting makes coloring issues, like my own house. There's no fixing my weird uneven house lightening in post (at least not that I can do) so flash fixes that. Honestly, the grip is kinda a must for me too and I'm a petite gal with tiny hands and I want a grip! Don't know how you guys do it without one! I really hope Nikon gives the z50 the firmware updates to make it on par with the Zfc.
Z fc all the way for me, well once I get rid of all my Fujis. The old style or "retro" style of controls is what I grew up with and honestly you can't get more Fundamental than that. I also think it and the Fujis are the best teaching tool for new photographers because you have your exposure triangle in full stops right there in front of you to play and experiment with. Was hoping Nikon would have made actual aperture rings on the SE lenses to complete the experience but oh well.
I'm may add a Zfc as a replacement for my D7200. With my D500 I would have a foot in both camps. The Zfc a different proposition and while I lose some benefits over the 7200 - user modes, ergos, no focus motor, battery compatibility, battery life, I think it would be good because I would carry a camera around more for general use, get better connectivity, access to Z mount and the ability to adapt old lenses from just about any manufacturer. The gr-1 grip is available here so could possibly add that if handling becomes an issue. No coloured bodies though!
I have a Z50 and love the little fella. I do like the FC getting USB-C and ditching the touch screen buttons I aways touch on the Z50 and end up being zoomed in when not wanted. I am sorry but the flash is so useable on the Z50 for convenience and getting good selfies when backlight hard. BTW I use the Z50 on one hip and my D7500 on the other so I am ready for anything. A truly great combo.
I really like the Z fc. But I'd pick the Z50 for the flash. If you snap a lot of people outdoors with the sun straight up, on board fill flash can be handy. I would "never" film myself so don't need the flip screen. This video is a fine comparison my friend. You always rock.
Hi Matt, picking up on the right angle usb-c cable, I have sourced and use MagSafe style versions to further protect the port - bitter experience on port replacement costs!! If you look for 10gb versions they transmit data as well. I use it on my Z6ii to connect my wt-7 transmitter as well as for power.
Here’s a link to such, not sure if it will work worldwide though: gbr.grandado.com/products/20-pins-magnetic-usb-c-adapter-type-c-connector-pd-100w-quick-charge-magnet-type-c-converter-for-macbook-pixelbook-matebook?variant=UHJvZHVjdFZhcmlhbnQ6MTE1MTQ1NjU0&gclid=CjwKCAjw87SHBhBiEiwAukSeUS2-1dV2k6eomyf7CbzJFQUf61BjKAbaIXiY2oc1Cs62Y2i4F5JBKhoC7boQAvD_BwE&fbclid=IwAR0-kwzwuP5XIfi6DilA0bwoEiYBYcfn71slaoLD1peTlHgxKejvHULmG9M
LETTERBOX! Great video Matt! Very thorough and clear - and so a lot more helpful than other videos I've seen. U modes in the dials vs. the menus, one Fn button vs. two, really understanding the differences between vario vs flippy screens, button layout changes ... these are important to buyers like me! Thank you. I want to disagree with you a bit about the flash, though. It's not just about low-light, it's about balancing the exposure. For street photography, family photography, and any number of situations where, for example, there may be strong backlighting, a flash is always handy. It's particularly useful for candid portraits (think of the tiny built-in flash on the Fuji X100v). I think the real shame is they don't make the SB400 anymore!
Yes exposure fill is a very good point. Although Nikon’s amazing dynamic range helps me with that too. A flash can never be fully replaced I agree. Thanks so much. 😀
It was a toss-up between the Fujifilm X-T30 II and Nikon Z fc, and the Z fc won me over. I love the retro style, the features are complete for hobbyists like I and the image quality is awesome. The X-T30 is a great camera, features great lenses, too, but the Fujifilm RAW files are as much of a pain in the neck, or rather in an area a long way further down the spine, as is their RAW converter that requires you to connect exactly the same camera to the computer that you used for shooting in order to develop your your RAW files. Nikon's RAW converter NX Studio is a lot better and delivers excellent results quickly. The Z 50 might be a good camera, but it's unspectacularly unsexy; it looks like a Z 5 that was laundered too hot, plus a built-in flash. I never even considered purchasing one.
I was disappointed that the Z50 didn’t have ‘focus shift’’. So glad that Nikon didn’t skim on this value added feature for macro-shooters. Will order one with the 28 SE😊
I like the Z50's button arrangement better. With all of the buttons on the right side, you can do everything you need to with one thumb. Much more convenient.
You’ll probably be really excited that Nikon Rumors finally posted first pictures of the Z9 back. Basically the D4S without the smaller information screen. The 45 MP, 30 FPS doesn’t sound right, so the actual sensor size is still not known. This maybe a 3 x stacked 16.2 MP sensor from the D4S, updated and total output 48.6 MP. Probably made in-house by Nikon itself.
I just bought the Z50. For me the ergonomics are much better on the Z50 but more importantly is the fact that the Z50 is not as flashy as the fc, which suits me for street photography. What I actually use the Z50 for is for fisheye photography so I bought the FTZ adapter along with the Tokina 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 AT-X 107 DX AF Fisheye lens. Unfortunately the Z50 does not have a focusing motor so it's manual focus for me. If Nikon ever comes out with a Z50 II that has a focusing motor I might trade up. Other than that I'm a happy camper. OH yeah, you look better in CinemaScope!
for my needs the zfc ticks more boxes - flippy screen, face and eye af in video mode, additional buttons on the bach, able to charge camera via a power bank - is a deal breaker for my needs, but wish it has the nice grip but we can always add accessories to somewhat solved that issue. thank you for the awesome review between the z50 vs zfc.
These two cameras illustrate another Nikon SHOULD do a D500 mirrorless version such as a Z90. DX has HUGE advantages. Smaller form factor, what many WANT and NEED is Small, light, and packed with power!
Watching this video again and I updated the Z50 with their latest firmware it shows Face detect in video mode but its focus seems to be the same as the Zfc. So the Zfc has the small box on the eye while the Z50 just has a box around the face. I think it is a different implementation by Nikon for this setting in video mode.
Great overview, thanks Matt! I currently have a Z50 and Z5. I like the Z50 a lot, especially the grip. I’ve hesitated over the Zfc even though I’d love the USB charging, flip out screen and face & eye detect in video. But your insight into different ways to hold the camera has me leaning towards switching. When I think back (30 years ago!), my old film camera didn’t have a grip and I used it with some pretty heavy lenses!
@@humanfirst11 I actually ended up trading the Z5 and Z50 on a Z7ii. I loved the photos from the Z5, but it struggled to focus in low light. Apparently that is better now with the firmware updates. I’d still recommend the Z5 - it’s a very good camera for the price!
have to say, if I was in the market for an APSC mirrorless camera, it'd be the Z fc if choosing between these two. not sure I'll ever be in a position to buy mirrorless of any description from my current perspective, so I may just stick with the DSLR D7500 because...... it works, it takes photos I like the results and if it works, why change it
Whether it is due to your limited experience or you've simply forgotten to mention it: the flash is NOT meant ONLY to be used in order to deal with the "poor light" - it also is very useful in a broad daylight, if there is a need to "kill" (darken) the background, for example while portraying a back-lighted subject, in which case you get the face properly lighted without "burning" the background. That being said, I consider the embedded flash unit on Z50 a much welcome plus over the FC. I wish my Z5 also had such flash "unit" (just like my Nikon DSLR cameras), but alas!, Nikon decided to strip most of the Z line-up bodies of this piece of hardware...
Hi Tor, I am sorry I don't remember what I said in a video made 18 months ago, but yes if I forgot to mention it, fill flash is always a useful tool. Regards Matt
I could go both ways, doesn't matter really, both are fine for my use. The Zfc is more likely, as I like the looks, plus it gives me something different than my z7, and I enjoy using different approaches. I think the big thing for Nikon is that those two cameras - very similar in a way, yet very different - appeal to entirely different people. Reaching out to more, different people is important in my opinion. Different age groups, difference in regions, difference in use result in different preferences. Good decision I think - albeit I admit I thought "not another Df" at first...
I have the z6II awesome camera, but as a walk around / vacation camera, I like the Zcf- not just because of the retro look, some of the updates over Z50.
Hello Matt I prefer the Z6 + 50 mm f 1.8 than the Zfc + 28 mm f 2.8 ; looks brighter, with a shallower depth of field. With the Zfc, i found the image too flat, less bright, and less contrasty.
Being an “old fart”, I’m going to say Z FC. it just looks like a camera while the Z50 might as well be marketed as a “tactical” camera. 😉 I just love the looks and while the functions are equal, the fully articulating screen and USB-C put it over the top on the comparison list. Thanks for the great video! 😎👍 EDIT - I forgot to mention, I’d get the black one.
Thanks for the comparison. I'm glad that you covered the front function button as I have come to rely on Fn2 for focus functions. I love the look of the Z-fc but already have a Z50 so it would be difficult to justify having both. However my wife borrowed my Z50 yesterday instead of using her D3000 and she's fallen in love with it so there may be a gap in my collection soon.
I thought about the Z50 but just use my Z7 in crop mode for times when I would be happy with a DX sensor. I didn’t think about the Z fc, sometimes you have to follow your heart, mine arrives tomorrow with the 28mm 😁
The ergonomic advantages of the Z50 outweigh the aesthetics of the Zfc for me. I had a Z50 for about a year and got some great results from it. As a D850 user I bought it for travel and to dip my toe in the mirrorless waters. I was convinced of the the advantages of mirrorless for landscape shooting and ended up getting a light used Z7 for a steal when the Z7II came out. I traded in the Z50 to fund some full frame Z glass. (Keeping the D850 for now just for wildllife).
So I've had the standard black Z FC in hand for about 24 hours, and I've used it a fair bit with the kit 16-50mm lens. These are just some initial thoughts. Optics are great. I'm not making posters so 20mp is perfectly fine. Colours are brilliant, and sharpness from the lens is fine. The AF is fantastic compared to my updated Z6. Almost making think about upgrading that, but I think I'll wait until a Z9 or Z8. Love the esthetics, and the usability of the dials. Menus very familiar, so no need for the chunky user manual. OK, so what are the negatives? Well, the body feels cheap. I would have happilly spent another £50-£100 for a tougher, heavier body. The plastic, especially at the bottom is horrible. For me, I'm going to keep it and use it when I don't need to carry the heavier kit. I'm even now considering keeping my Z6 kit lens (24-70mm f/4 FX) to use with this, which would give me a nice range with the 16-50mm native DX. Got mine from @graysofwestminster (UK), so received a lovely Billingham bag, lens cleaning kit and memory card. Good start all round. If Nikon makes a full frame verison with a better quality body, I'd be all over it. But until then, I'll enjoy this little spec monster.
Always enjoy your videos! I checked the Zfc manual and the Zfc DOES NOT appear to have ANY user/preset modes. The 2nd Fn button (for metering or subject tracking) and pop-up flash are invaluable. As far as rugged you can store your screen flipped over to protect it. Also, the tilt screens on Z#'s can't rotate 90 degrees down, to shoot over your head and not annoy the people behind you in a crowd. The USB-B port STINKS along with the non en-el15 battery on both. The Z50 wins this one for me all day long. Where is our Z500?! ;) I SURE HOPE Nikon lets us remap sub-menu items to the Fn buttons eventually, adds Wide(L) with eye detection, and bring the save settings to the Z50 via firmware.
I don't understand the point of releasing Zfc. They could have overcome the shortcomings in Z50, and released a Z50 II. It would have been awesome. Only 3 improvements were required, better auto-focus, larger battery and IBIS. I'd have bought it without second thought.
for someone like me, who likes to shoot a lot of star trails, the USB-C power is kind of a turning point towards the fc. i have a z50, however it still doesn´t have an option for external power. i would love to have the fc, so maybe later, when the price drops a little. after all, having a backup body is always a plus.
I'm so drawn to the Z fc, but when it comes right down to it the ergo's on the Z50 (an opinion based on using the Z50 and never having touched a Z fc - but I have several older SLR's and have used them I have a decent idea of how they work so.....) is superior to the Z fc. Now if Nikon comes out with a version that at least matches the Fuji XT-4 in specs - I think I'd be on it like a fresh BLT. I want a higher end version to justify buying it. Doesn't have to be full frame though. As I look at the side by shots it seems to me the Z50 is a modern version of the Z fc and if they came out with a XT-4 spec'd version the Z50 I'd probably get it instead. I do like the smaller chassis format the Z50 and Z fc bring to the table vs the Z6/7. So I think Nikon should explore some higher end DX versions of these two cameras.
I would love your opinion on wildlife photography, especially the shooting of birds. Which camera is best? From what you have said so far it seems to be the Z fc. Is that right?
Hello Matt, a note on the price. All moving parts that are supposed to work reliably in the long term are more expensive than all the electronic features. Ore why did apple abolish the pushbutton on the iphone? So, logically, the zfc is a bit more expensive. This also applies to the mirror reflex technology. Works perfectly, but too expensive to manufacture. Ok, i had the Z50 (has been sold), the Z6 is still with me. The Zfc has been ordered. I look forward to it. Greetings from cologne to down under, Harald
Great Harald, it is a beautiful machine :) And I agree, with say the flippy screen and more exterior dials, perhaps makes it more expensive :) Cheers Matt
Hi Matt. TTartisan will be making three silver (metal) manual focus mirrorless lenses, specifically designed for the Z fc camera. The manual focusing lenses would be ideal to use with the retro Z camera, and pretty much cover most of the shooting needs of this camera. TTArtisian will announce new silver versions of its 50mm f1.2, 35mm f1.4, and 17mm f1.4 APS-C manual focusing lenses for Nikon Z mount, specifically designed for the Z fc. Now this would be a fun camera for sure. I’d buy the fc and these three lenses for Christmas, and have some fun.
I have the Z50 and love this little small beast, but would have gone with the Zfc all the way if I had to choose today. Would not even think twice, price tag is insignificant IMHO. Curiously, the most annoying feature on the Z50 is the touchscreen zoom buttons - can’t stand it anymore!
Hi Matt, The next iteration Nikon Z FC will even be more Retro! It will have a Flash Cube socket instead of a flash shoe... Hi Hi Talk about retro... The Accessory Grip will NOT be available in the US for some reason according to Nikon's specs. From the photo of the grip, it looks awkward and I think it detracts from the style of the camera. Regards Matt! Rick
The lack of build in flash is a problem for me, as an amateur I use a lot the flash to fill outdoors photos, I like to carry a camera to parties, travel without carry an external flash that are bulky. The camera targeted market is casual people who want a capable cool camera, no pro photographers, hence the lack of build in flash is huge.
@@MattIrwinPhotography carrying around a flash (none of which are small) is too bulky for the casual, hobby photographer. That's why pop up flash is so great. Takes up zero space and it's always there, not in a bag in the car, etc
I was set to buy a Z5, then the rumors of the Zfc started & here it is. The 11 fps vs 4.5 matters. I like the more analog interface of the fc which should free up the command dials for other functions
I don't think the 11fps is with metering and AF in between frames though. With the Z6II, the camera is metering between each frame and I suspect the Z5 is the same.
@@ryanbeer5262 I think the number you cite for the Z6II might actually be for the Z6. The Z6II can deliver 14 fps with AF and tracking in between. Super fast, but still slower than Sony's and Canon's best.
Z fc is gonna be my new camera end of this month...maybe with the kit. I need a small, nice daily-in-my-bag camera and I like it's look. Although I can use most of my F lenses, I will get some Viltorx lenses (23mm, 33mm and later 56mm). The Z fc and some small lenses will be not much heavier than my D800 without a lens attached. I like your review(s) and videos - thanks for tge content!
I am buying 2@ Z9's and 2@Zfc's and Nikon, Milvus, and Otus lenses. Been away too long. Oh, getting a mirrorless Blad, too. Already have film cams out the wazoo.
Thanks Matt for your video you did spend a lot of the video talking about the video quality. It's really interesting. I get a little bit sick of video comparisons when the average photographer will shoot one video we get take hundreds of photos. There wasn't much of a comparison in terms of photography and taking photos and this is why I would buy a retro style camera like this. Yes I do a small bit of vlogging, but honestly I use my GoPro 10 because it's light and portable when I'm out on landscape shoots and it fits in the side of my bag. I don't want to lug another camera around for vlogging on landscape shoots. But it would've been nice to see a bit more of a comparison with the Photography side of things as essentially, it is a camera. Thanks mate will keep watching your videos
The Z50 is more like the other digital Nikons, so much easier to figure out if you already have a Nikon D or Z series. All the usual buttons are in the same place. Because of the retro look there is a bit of a learning curve to get used to the Zfc.
So wait… regarding the power supply for ZFC - I’ve had batteries die in cold weather. Would I be able to have a portable external power supply in my pocket to keep the power warm, while continuing to capture photos??? In the old days, Nikon had an accessory that allowed the batteries be in one’s pocket and attached to the camera with a cord - remember?
I plan to add a mirrorless body to my Nikon F and Nikon AF digital arsenal and the Zfc is very tempting. Just wished it had IBIS, that would seal the deal for me. I need IBIS because I have a neurological condition that causes muscle weakness which leads to camera shake.
thanks a lot for sharing your experiences and thoughts of the zfc. also thanks for answering my question about the usersettings. as far as i understand you, it does not have the ABCD banks like the Df has. therfore a few more questions: is it necessary to set the camera in AUTO mode to access the usermodes? can the manual dials on the top be used while a usermode is selected? about the usb-c / micro-hdmi: i hope in future cameras the usb-c can be used with a portreplicator. there could be audio in&out, normal hdmi, power delivery etc. over just one port with a little accessorie part.
I know another nonstandard plug is probably not welcome on these cameras, but it seems like Nikon had an opportunity to use their SD8 battery pack system that is used for the flash units to be a power bank that is versatile and uses readily available batteries.
I'm honestly split on how great USB-C is. Yes, it's nicer than micro-B because of the ergonomics and the PD specification. But before, when I was traveling, I had a 4 port USB-A charger and a bunch of USB-A to micro-B cables, plus one USB-A to Lightning for my phone. Now I have a 4 port charger that as 3 USB-A ports and 1 that is USB-C. I have a USB-C to Lightning cable for my phone, I still need USB-A to micro-B for my power bank, that power bank has a USB-A output so I need a USB-A to Lightning cable as well, and I need at least one USB-A to USB-C for my earbuds. The rest of my devices are camera battery chargers that have both micro-B and USB-C inputs. Oh, and my shaver has a USB-A to proprietary with a voltage adapter in the cable. It's a bit of a mess. Though I do realise I haven't made things easier by getting that power bank that still has micro-B for input and only USB-A for output. But then there aren't many 6700mAh power banks with USB-C in/out. And there's no Kindle with USB-C either. Some websites say USB-C is unnecessary for low power devices, but it means more cables and more confusion. Sorry for the rant. ;)
I'm stills-only but I prefer the Zfc style flippy screen which I have on my little Panasonic GX8. I find my Z7 screen a bit annoying in portrait mode if I'm trying to go high or low as it only flips sideways in that orientation. I also prefer all the dials, so hopefully they release a higher end Zf at some stage.
Hi Matt, I went to my camera store just last week and I could try out the Z50. It is small and light, features I was looking for, because travelling is slowly getting possible again in Germany. But I decided against the Z50 because of the small sensor. I will stick with my Z6 because of the possibility of more bokeh in my images. I miss a selfiescreen, though and I'm waiting for small and light lenses. For now I'm buying the 24-50 z5 kit lense, but that will hopefully be a just for a short term.
Something else that gets missed is the lack of effects on the zfc. Then again, the Z50 doesn’t have as many options for post-processing effects in camera either (as compared to the D3500/5700 and D750/D780). I prefer to shoot in raw and occasionally add effects by in-body post (like the color sketch / photo illustration, in particular with some deliberately out of focus shots for a more abstract effect). I can understand that functionality missing on the zfc (and most of the Z FX models for that matter) to provide some product differentiation, but they crippled post processing in the Z50 as compared to the D3500/5600. If they added it back in the Z50ii (or even another Zxx body) I’d buy it in a minute. Better yet, incorporate the in-body post-processing effects into a version of their Capture software and you get that functionality for all Z and F mount cameras.
ZfC is the obvious pick. You can fold the screen IN and have a more rugged camera. Better AF, external power options...it's far better looking. No brainer to add this to my kit along side my Z7II.
Just received notice my FC pre ordered from the Nikon USA website was delayed. I wonder if Nikon will release a firmware for better autofocus in video for the Z50.
probably not a big deal but I wonder if it will charge while powered from USB and in use - e.g. streaming 4K, WiFi on etc. Just curious really. Great roundup btw - looking forward to more opinions once you have had a chance to use it in the wild.

No firm grip and no IBIS is a no-go for me regarding Zfc but points for the esthetic (and flippy screen). Never underestimate esthetics, people. Yet, I find the Z50 completely uninspiring and struck with, as our friend Camera Conspiracies says, a cripple-hammer, even though it is a powerful small boi. I've been looking for a streaming + shooting camera to finally upgrade from my D7000 and into the Z system and maybe keep the sensor size. Unfortunately, for now, Zfc would just not be satisfactory for outside shooting. I love large grips like on my D7000 so I can maneuver it around. I also use vintage lenses, so IBIS is something I'd really love! I've been spoiled after trying a friend's XT-4. So in conclusion: neither does it for me, but Zfc is much closer to what I need. Business idea: Zfc II - has grip and IBIS. Insta sales in the enthusiast bracket, as most of use APS-C. :D
I have a question, please. Both cameras list a bracketing mode. I'm interested in HD bracketing. Might this negate the need for fill flash in most circumstances? Is either the Z50 or Zfc more capable of one press shooting 3 or 5 bracketed shots? Thanks
Hey Matt. I'm looking for a camera for creating RUclips videos and would like to stick to the Nikon platform. Would the Z fc be the best and most reasonable costing one to get? Cheers
@@MattIrwinPhotography I'm a dog sports and studio shooter so definitely studio and probably some out and about behind the scenes of sports events. So studio and vlog!
It's a shame that the colour options on the Zfc don't extend to the back of the articulated screen. I like the brown version you have here but the black on the rear of the screen when flipped round looks poor. For that reason alone I'd probably opt for the black/silver version if only to keep the visual aesthetic throughout 😊
I might have a stupid doubt. On a crop censor (1.5 x for nikon), does the depth of field also increase by 1.5. I mean.. does f2.8 provide a depth of field more like an f3.5 ? Hope I'm making sense 🙏
A late answer, but: No, it is actually the exact opposite, even though what you would be experiencing is an optical illusion. 😅 In the focal (sensor) plane the Out-of-Focus blurriness from a point light source, IE. the 'bokeh circle', is *exactly* the same in physical properties. diameter in particular, for a given lens set to a particular focusing distance. This must be true, since the focus circle properties is dictated by the lens and not the sensor. _However_, the cropped (DX) sensor requires you to enlarge the captured sensor image 1.5 times more for a given final display size, compared to a FF image. So for a DX image and a given lens/focus distance the captured focus circle will appear larger. IE. in practical terms focusing is 1.5 times more critical / you get 1.5 times the blurriness on a DX sized sensor, compared to full frame. Edit: Alternative viewpoint: If you swapped lenses to make the DX image the same width in angular degrees as the FX image, then the DoF would be identical between the two (but now taken with two different lenses).
Not getting all the retro thing. I mean I'm 66 and remember my 1st camera Ricoh TLS 401 to my retro Canon AE-1 to Nikon F1 cameras. Tho I have a fondness in the memories. I just don't get why I would give up ergonomics of having a grip or much used controls that makes getting the shot easier and seamless. Instead of stuck with knobs and buttons on top which means taking my eye away from viewfinder to look at controls. So guess I am not the target. But anyone seriously wanting to learn and grow into photography I would point them to the Z50. As the Zfc seems more about the aesthetics of a past era. Sacrificing usability for looks.
I hear you and personally I've been on the fence about getting a retro-handling camera (Fuji or now this Zfc). But I think the difference in experience is the fact that the dials force you to slow down, and maybe that also forces you to think more about the shot in front of you. Is it for action? No, you'd want DSLR-like controls to get ready as fast as you can. But slow, contemplative photography doesn't need that. Also, the dials may also help some learners (though I absolutely agree with you about the Z50 being a great learning tool).
@@gyozakeynsianism Yep see the point but one of the good techniques about slowing down applies to any camera you are using. As I have my times of quick action. But on many walkabouts I have a sit down and look and take it all in contemplating composition just as easily on my D500 or my Z5. And any photographer has those fleeting moments where life whizzes by needing quick reflexes when needed. I would rather have a camera that can capture all aspects of life. As then I have options.
Having held this camera in my hand, it invites a different ergonomic model. Perhaps bringing your left hand more into play. For each of us photography is an endeavour for many varied and different reasons. I have been a street photographer for over 35 years, and I can certainly say that a camera which looks very humble and 'low tech' (even so it is not) will attract less attention. Plus I just love the looks :) Cheers Matt
I love the retro looks. I would prefer if they added a slight bump for added grip. I switched from Nikon to Sony, but if Nikon could create the zfc with full frame, ibis, a slight bump for grip, improved their auto focus up to the Sony standard of last year (2020) then I would buy one. Nikon could’ve launched this style of cameras years ago. Oh wait they did. But then they wanted to improve ergonomics and ditched it.!
@@MattIrwinPhotography Greetings... I mainly shoot my kids, dogs. street and general family stuff. If I shot mainly studio/static portraits, landscape, product then I would have stuck with my D850. For moving kids the nikon had way to many missed shots. I waited for years for Nikon to make a real D850 replacement, it never came so i switched. Nikon (D850) evoked an emotional response, my Sony does not, but my Sony A7Riv gets the job done better. Keep up your outstanding work.
Of these two, easily the ZFc . Design , looks, at least as good IQ, However, the reality is that I probably won't buy either. In real world conditions, the bigger sensor and ibis of the Z5 makes more sense. And I've seen it advertised cheaper at Digidirect on occasion.
@@soaringvulture i hope you changed your mind! I think they're really fun
Best comparison of these 2 bodies I've seen - clear, thorough, excellent 🙂👏🏻
Please?
Yes Jeff, I think that is a great idea to have multiple User modes beyond 1,2,3 :) Cheers Matt
"Why not press a button and spin a dial to scroll through dozens of user modes, with customized names? It would just be a firmware change. Hardly cost them anything to add to our cameras."
That's exactly the reason why manufacturers don't build in features like that.
I use the flash on my Z50 more than I thought I would. Very handy for outdoor fill.
Yes outdoor fill is a very good point Geno. : ) And I think I don't use it much these days due to Nikons amazing dynamic range .... Of course a flash can never be fully replaced. Cheers Matt
I never tried that because it doesn't have high sync Flash, do you use a ND filter?
Not usually. The Z50 just figures it out. I'm usually just lighting up some faces trying to avoid a silhouette. Just holiday pics.
What I really want is a Z50 II with the Z50 ergonomics + the AF modes and flippy screen of the Z50.
My thoughts exactly. That is why I’m still keeping my D5600 for the time being.
The added features make the Zfc worth the extra cash, the style is a bonus and make it appear better value than Z50
Yes that is pretty much my personal assessment too David :)
I do agree bro so excited to have the Zfc although i have already the Z6 & Z50
I have z5 and z50 already, but I would like to have the zfc too. It is so beautiful! Greetings from Finland!
You only really need 12 MP. But if you crop then you’ll notice the differences.
I had the z50 and loved it dearly. I got too caught up in the FF debacle.. and moved all the way to the z6ii which I do love to bits however don’t believe it was needed for my photography. Just being honest.
Honestly (for me), the Z50 was super but the Z6II is a whole different level. This pair actually makes an ideal combo too.
Nikon's done it right with the Z fc, I do like my Z6 with user modes though, but can't help but find myself wanting to pickup a Z fc.
If some extra cash falls from the heavens, I'll buy the Zfc and keep my Z50 as well. I'm an old dog loving most things retro.
The flash on it is really handy. The grip is good too. Those are the reasons I choose the Z50 over the Zfc.
Here’s a link to such, not sure if it will work worldwide though:

But that would mean you always have to have the cover off right? because the magsafe style connector doesnt fit onder the cover.
My Z fc is arriving on Monday! Can't wait.
Lucky you!! Enjoy and let us know how it goes.
I love my ZFC with its kits lens and 50-250 Dx Lens. They give wonderful results
Yeah Abdul, I agree it is a great little unit :)
I was disappointed that the Z50 didn’t have ‘focus shift’’. So glad that Nikon didn’t skim on this value added feature for macro-shooters. Will order one with the 28 SE😊
Love that little ZFc but just don’t want another cropped sensor. Really hoping Nikon makes a FF version. 🤞🏼
Thanks for the heads up.
I really appreciate your thoughts and comparisons. Need more people like you reviewing cameras on youtube!
for my needs the zfc ticks more boxes - flippy screen, face and eye af in video mode, additional buttons on the bach, able to charge camera via a power bank - is a deal breaker for my needs, but wish it has the nice grip but we can always add accessories to somewhat solved that issue.
thank you for the awesome review between the z50 vs zfc.
I bought the zfc already, definitely I miss the grip, the performance of the camera is pretty amazing, it's a good option, nice video
Thanks for sharing
Great overview, thanks Matt! I currently have a Z50 and Z5. I like the Z50 a lot, especially the grip. I’ve hesitated over the Zfc even though I’d love the USB charging, flip out screen and face & eye detect in video. But your insight into different ways to hold the camera has me leaning towards switching. When I think back (30 years ago!), my old film camera didn’t have a grip and I used it with some pretty heavy lenses!
How's your Z5?

Great review. Respecting people who would like or dislike either camera.
For sure Robert :) They are both great little cameras in their own right :)
I purchased a Nikon SB400 flash for my Z5; works in TTL mode perfectly. Works on my D700 as well!
As a hobbyist who already owns a fuji xt1 the zfc appeals to me but I believe I would be happy with either camera.
Hello Matt
I prefer the Z6 + 50 mm f 1.8 than the Zfc + 28 mm f 2.8 ; looks brighter, with a shallower depth of field. With the Zfc, i found the image too flat, less bright, and less contrasty.
No worries Geoffroy, when comparing them was this in video or stills? Or based on my video? Cheers Matt :)
@@MattIrwinPhotographyA 100% based on your video, in video mode only
Being an “old fart”, I’m going to say Z FC. it just looks like a camera while the Z50 might as well be marketed as a “tactical” camera. 😉
I just love the looks and while the functions are equal, the fully articulating screen and USB-C put it over the top on the comparison list.
Thanks for the great video! 😎👍
EDIT - I forgot to mention, I’d get the black one.

Yep. It is a thing of beauty. 📷
Even with high ISOs, it’s nice to have a built in flash for fill light, faces and so forth.
Would love to have a Zfc, but it is too late, i already own a Z50.
Next gen maybe?
I have the Z 50, and bought the Z Fc. Both great cameras!
@@bcp9814 Is Zfc autofocus in low light better than Z50?
Where is our Z500?! ;)
I SURE HOPE Nikon lets us remap sub-menu items to the Fn buttons eventually, adds Wide(L) with eye detection, and bring the save settings to the Z50 via firmware.
I love the idea of being able to carry around a small smart phone power bank and have it plugged into the camera for extra long video shooting
Nice video, but as a photographer I would never ever consider anything but the Zfc if chosing Nikon. / Ulf
I would love your opinion on wildlife photography, especially the shooting of birds. Which camera is best? From what you have said so far it seems to be the Z fc. Is that right?
Which is good for pictures and especially for video recording and which is more stable when recording moving objects fast
Hello Matt,
a note on the price. All moving parts that are supposed to work reliably in
the long term are more expensive than all the electronic features.
Ore why did apple abolish the pushbutton on the iphone?
So, logically, the zfc is a bit more expensive. This also applies to the
mirror reflex technology. Works perfectly, but too expensive to manufacture.
Ok, i had the Z50 (has been sold), the Z6 is still with me.
The Zfc has been ordered. I look forward to it.
Greetings from cologne
to down under,
Harald
Ups, I forgot the time. Here is 18:00, but you
are in deep night. :) Sorry ...
Its the photographer that makes the picture, the camera is the tool. It just looks cooler
Hi Matt,
The next iteration Nikon Z FC will even be more Retro! It will have a Flash Cube socket instead of a flash shoe... Hi Hi
Talk about retro...
I think getting a very small flash will work well. The SB-500 will give much better result than a built in - I would see that as a choice
@@12w3hji123456789 Great work around Tomas
@@MattIrwinPhotography carrying around a flash (none of which are small) is too bulky for the casual, hobby photographer. That's why pop up flash is so great. Takes up zero space and it's always there, not in a bag in the car, etc
The ZFC is a wonderful little camera . If Nikon offered some nice F2 glass for it I’d be all over it . I also wish it had a joystick .
@@gyozakeynsianism did some checking, all three cameras are within 1 frame of each other with ae & af tracking z5 4.5, z6ii 5.5, Zfc 5.
Yes there is some new muscle memory to learn ...
I’m going to get the black version, the large black rear screen looks out of place with the brown version ZFC
I plan to add a mirrorless body to my Nikon F and Nikon AF digital arsenal and the Zfc is very tempting. Just wished it had IBIS, that would seal the deal for me. I need IBIS because I have a neurological condition that causes muscle weakness which leads to camera shake.
I was considering buying a Z50 this week, but for now I am sticking with my D750 until the Zfc is readily available.
Great plan John :)
thanks a lot for sharing your experiences and thoughts of the zfc.
also thanks for answering my question about the usersettings.
as far as i understand you, it does not have the ABCD banks like the Df has.
therfore a few more questions:
is it necessary to set the camera in AUTO mode to access the usermodes?
can the manual dials on the top be used while a usermode is selected?
about the usb-c / micro-hdmi:
i hope in future cameras the usb-c can be used with a portreplicator. there could be audio in&out, normal hdmi, power delivery etc. over just one port with a little accessorie part.
About " plug in charging / power"....Is there a battery pack, belt mount ?.The reason would be no needing to stop to charge up or swap batteries.
Sorry for the rant. ;)
Yeah it is hard Peter, I agree, I would be happy for all devices, including Apple to be USB C.
That is certainly my personal choice.
Cheers
What sort of videos are you thinking about? studio, vlog, etc…
@@MattIrwinPhotography I'm a dog sports and studio shooter so definitely studio and probably some out and about behind the scenes of sports events. So studio and vlog!
I want to know as i wana start versatile professional photography so which camera should i opt for under $1271 as i want it for a start!
In the focal (sensor) plane the Out-of-Focus blurriness from a point light source, IE. the 'bokeh circle', is *exactly* the same in physical properties. diameter in particular, for a given lens set to a particular focusing distance.
@@ElectroTone haha thank u so much. Had to read twice but was worth it. Appreciate u spending the time to explain. Cheers
@ Orbmiser
I’m definitely like you and close to your age, although I can understand those who prefer otherwise.
Hi HP, what do you mainly photograph? Cheers Matt :)
Yes I like the retro look, I like the flippy screen for Vlogging, but going back to a cropped sensor???
For me that is a tough nut to swallow.
Of these two, easily the ZFc . Design , looks, at least as good IQ, However, the reality is that I probably won't buy either. In real world conditions, the bigger sensor and ibis of the Z5 makes more sense. And I've seen it advertised cheaper at Digidirect on occasion.
As a Df user, I wanna get a black zfc with a manual Voigtlander lens.
