  • This is a step by step instructional video on the removal and installation of both the flywheel and stator on a Johnson or Evinrude V6 outboard motor. The stator is suspected to be melted and the flywheel magnets have become cracked and loose dislodged.

Dan: Thanks for showing all this good information.
You may recall that at about 1 minute and 5 seconds into the video you said, "...if I can remember..." you would put the link to "a wonderful video" on the correct way to trouble-shoot "the entire ignition system" of an Evinrude / Johnson 2-stroke engine such as the 150 hp one that pushes my boat.
Would you please put the link in the next video.

Just so everyone is aware: ALWAYS LAP A NEW FLYWHEEL!!!! If you put a different one on, the tapers are not going to seat properly! the crank and flywheel are a MATCHED SET from the factory and seat themselves uniquely. another thing: make sure the INSIDE magnet for the timer base hasn't shifted by referring to the reference chart for your particular motor.

i would almost bet the issue lies within the reman flywheel . you mentioned that the key way on the inner magnet insert was installed 1/2" different from the oe one you pulled off. I think you did a great job! There is alot to say about DIY boaters that are not johnson 2 stroke mechanics. I am sure you know that motor inside and out by now. 👍

Where’s that link you mentioned to the other video? Great content btw. Thank you. The water pump video gave me confidence to fix it myself.

I know its an old video but, my stator on my johnson 225 crapped out. Bought one from jetunit. I have a problem. It has 2 more wires in the front than my old one did. Any idea where they would hook up? Thanks

Hey , just curios if the magnest were making a rattle sound ? I developed a sound that sounds like its coming from the flywheel & thinking i might have a loose magnet(s). Or did it stop charging & you discovered the magnest when you pulled it appart ?
Ill have to pull it apart & check but just curios.
    Cheers,

If you put the timer orange & orange and black stripe opposite it will not start///the timer has everything to do with a break up at high revs///or lack of fuel pressure when in demand///persistence and money will always win good luck

What is that spray you used to clean under the stator?
    All the best,

What a nightmare. I think replacement flywheel is wrong causing timing to be out. Replace magnets in old flywheel and try again. Wasn’t timing mechanism.

I just replaced the stator on mine, and now I have no spark at all. Which wires did you have backwards on yours? I used the exact same replacement part from same company and can’t get fire at all on any cylinder.

I haven't seen this guy reply to any messages. I'm getting ready to replace the stator on mine soon. Please let me know if you figured out what caused your no spark issue in case I run into the same situation. Thank you.

Jacob Ellis mine ended up being the prongs inside of the stator plugs were loose and not actually making connection. Idk why they are made that way but I just assumed they were fixed like the factory stator, but the plug from the power pack was just pushing them back into the stator plug. I used a jetunit stator so a CDI may not be built that way. Also ended up replacing power pack before I discovered this issue.
