    Thank you for the review and your continued excellent work in this space...we are all better for your efforts! I have been a Garmin user forever and have been on the 1030 Plus for many years. I cannot find any reason why I would want to leave Garmin and I cannot find a reason to upgrade my 1030 Plus as it does everything I need very well and the newer generation does not have any 'must have' features for me.
    What I really want is for Strava to have the feature sets that are available in Garmin Connect and to a lesser degree Training Peaks. I have evolved to using Strava as my primary tracking mechanism, mostly for the convenience, however, Stava has always been lacking in items such as calendaring, better goals/tracking, etc. Strava has made some progress in those areas, however, it has been far too slow.

    I have sort of 'committed' to Garmin through years of using their products and while I know it is possible to mix and match between different brands I just find it so simple and easy when everything works across e.g. watch, chest HRM, head unit, and mobile phone app/PC app, without having to manually import or export anything at all. That said, if you are on a tight budget there is a lot to be gained by going down the mix and match route but it could include a fair few headaches and some loss of compatible data across several different platforms.

    I was given a new at the time stages unit for free a couple of years ago. The set up was relatively easy and the look of the unit is actually really awesome after coming from a Garmin 520. Outside of that, the thing is the most inaccurate GPS device I have ever used in my life. The thing is barely usable in wide open road riding for any sort of accurate distance measurement, but completely shits the bed in any sort of MTB riding.

      @joules2936 3 месяца назад

      Brand popularity rarely dictates price … just look at all the small brand bikes and frames out there which can often be more than ‘popular’ brand equivalent. Price is dictated by what the unit costs to produce (including a proportion of R&D, distributed/retailer markup, taxes etc, and what the brand thinks they can sell the product for.

    Hey Shane, I’m really looking forward to your in-depth review of this unit when you’re ready. I’ve been with Garmin since the 705’s with a short stint with the original Element and Bolt units. Currently on the 1030 plus for road and gravel and 830 for MTB (The 1000 series lever like shape doesn’t play nice with the type of MTB riding I like… ) . My issue with the 800 series is the screen size just isn’t quite sufficient for the tightly packed “ball of yarn “ type trail systems found in my area. This unit looks promising.
    Side note, you seem happy with the Garmin connect app. Perhaps it’s user error on my part; but …. Unless I update the ride to Connect via the mobile app, it won’t ever show in the mobile app. In other words, if at the end of the ride if the unit (1030 or 830) connects to WiFi and uploads the ride, Connect web will show the ride, but the mobile app will never reflect that it happened at all. All of my riding buddies have the exact same experience; so much so that they stopped using the mobile app all together. Likewise, if I ride Zwift, it updates Connect (web) but not Mobile. If this is NOT user error (and I hope it is) seems like a real head scratcher. Any thoughts?

    I cycled 15,000 km with an IGPSPORT model IGS 620 cycling computer.
    But in the future I will buy another brand.
    Here's why.
    - There is no audio signal if the target power of your workout changes, so you have to continuously look at the cycling computer, which is very dangerous in traffic.
    - It takes 3 attempts each time to connect my cycling computer to my phone.
    - If I load a TrainingPeaks workout via my phone to the cycling computer, six digits will be placed in front of the file name, which will make the file name too long and will not load later. The same applies to GPX routes that I create with the IGPSPORT website.

      I have one and have thrown a TON of feedback over to Magene. They've sent over a beta firmware and are in the process of responding (hopefully rapidly) to a few of the issues I've encountered. I'll give them a little more time to get the firmware updated and pushed to the public release stream.

    I would be interested in a different device if i could still upload to garmin connect. I have had a garmin watch for a while now and connect has become my primary fitness analyzer. I have stopped paying for strava too.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  3 месяца назад

      Not directly. This is a Garmin only service. You’d need to look at having a third party tool do that upload/sync (and be sure Garmin don’t ban it). For years Garmin Connect would not accept FIT files from Wahoo units regardless of how they were uploaded to it.

    does it have climbpro like feature?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  2 месяца назад +1

      It does. It only works when following a route you’ve loaded. It is also very limited in what it detects as a ‘climb’. On a recent rider the Edge detected three climbs where as this iGS800 only defected one, and only the top section of the climb.

    I had a IGS610 which was absolutely TERRIBLE. I lost 20% of my rides, it crashed without saving, app was buggy. terrible hardware and even worse software. but this looks legit and might even be tempted to give this brand a try again even though I absolutely HATED the 610 back in 2018. lets see what hammerhead releases in the next couple of weeks...the Karoo 2 certainly needs an update.

    I just got a 630s, came with no maps for my location. Had to borrow a laptop to connect the unit with a USB cable to the laptop to display the map files on my computer. Countries have 2 letter codes to identify them. Deleted one country to make room to copy and paste my location map. Was like 1900s computing. So, no map maintenance in the the app, no way to include detailed regional maps, so useless for MTB.

    I just had a thought, if your battery life is over 24 hours, and that’s quoted with back light off, you’ll never actually get that life, because unless it’s Alaska in June, your going to need to use the back light if your ride is that long 😂

    • @chris1275cc
      @chris1275cc 3 месяца назад

      Wouldn't get too exited, I have the igs630 and if It's anything like that then the UI is basically a thinly vailed copy of the one on the Edge 520+. It even occasionally does that thing Garmin's do where it just refuses point-blank to upload a ride, and you have to go manual so they got the UX down too. 🤣
      p.s joking (kind of) aside, I do like it, great little HU and well worth the price.
