- Two people were pulled from the waters under the Francis Scott Key Bridge, one in serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace.
The cargo ship appears to have crashed into one of the bridge's supports during the middle of night when traffic would be expected to be lighter, according to a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

Seeing those cars on the Bridge going down towards and into the water was devastating. I can not imagine the fear of those inside their vehicles.

Vehicles are not water tight, you have about 3 minutes until you're dead.

Also if you listened to the broadcast, the change in tide coincided with sunrise so now they have light but are fighting currents in unknown conditions. I say unknown because there are now the twisted remains of a bridge in the water that wasn't there yesterday.
windows in cars need to be able to roll down manually. so many people lose their lives just because they cant get out once submerged.
Always carry window breaker even a screwdriver, there are safety videos on how. Prayers for all effected 😢❤ also knife or scissors just in case seatbelt jams.

Yes. But also, in case anyone who reads this ever goes into the water, if your car hasn't been disabled by physical damage the power windows should still work. Don't grab your phone, don't crawl to the back, roll down your window and get out immediately. Many people either assume they don't work or they crawl to the back to dial 911 as their car fills with water. Also, newer cars have laminated side windows and your "survival knife" window breaker won't work.

@@SandyBootsCan. Unfortunately new vehicles are starting to use a new type of laminated windows on the side windows so they won’t break completely even with the window breaker tool. They are being made like the front windows now…so they shatter but stay together so glass doesn’t fly everywhere. So I agree we need to go back to manual windows like we used to have.

It was the boat operator or someone above reported that the boat hit the bridge structure.
Need Coast Guard, Nothing but respect to all rescue workers but The Coast Guard is truly on another level .
The Coast Guard in adjacent Curtis Bay is trapped, since no cutters can go in or out of the outer harbor with the debris blocking their path.

They were very lucky this was 1:30am in the morning and not in the afternoon.
I live in Maryland. A couple of yrs ago a friend gave me a ride to go buy a truck from someone who lives in Edgemere. So we drove over the Key bridge and I bought the truck. When I drove back over the bridge it was dark and I remember thinking how scary it would be if it ever collapsed - a thought I quickly dismissed because "there's no way that could ever happen"😳😳😳
A bridge is no match for a container ship
Ship lost power x2 and crashed into bridge. Cantilevered structure is interdependent on all of its supports at the same time. There were bumpers in the water to prevent collision but not enough of them. Ship was out of shipping lane and out of control. At least it wasn't rush hour. RIP 😢
It's strange that after the first power outage the diesel started roaring and it immediately turned towards the bridge support.
@schrutefarmbeets4448 that was the ship going hard astern. When a single screw ship backs hard it will kick the ship in the direction of the pitch of the wheel. That's why you see the turn accelerate as soon as the smoke billows out. You also loose steerage as soon as you back because no water moving across the rudder. Probably wasn't the best decision in hindsight but what you gonna do.
The ship was hacked by the CIA. It was approved by the biden administration.

Reporters ask the dumbest questions - so they can inflate the situation - 1st concern should be workers, their families, vehicles/individuals possibly in the water, etc.

We have to investigate as well as a priority those on ship, everyone has a job and can undertake it at the same time. Clearly needs investigating as of now!
Rescue teams, etc. can do their job at the same time as the thorough investigation.

I watched another video with them being more concerned on when the bridge was going to get built back up as opposed to casualties or possible rescue efforts 🤦🏽♂️

I have a MS in Oceanography and Im familiar with the bridge and water in yards. The water temperature is in the 40’s and @50 feet deep. There are currents going fast to the south. A real problem to rescue anyone. Praying 🙏🏼 for them.
Send the dive team in immediately. They all get a lifetime pension for 30 years of service
My wife's cousin lived in Dundalk. We have been across tha Francis Scott Key bridge several times. Praying for all those involved.

I want so bd for this all to be a happy ending of rescuing but my heart is challenging it. Looking at how easily that bridge buckled is alarming. No contingenices for a shop loosing propulsion? No contingencies for a bridge that carries tens of thousands a day and upteen million a year? One support beam? The buckling of that bridge alone is sad, seems needing updated years ago.

No, the tugs had done their job, their job being to put the ship in to the out bound channel. They had returned to base when the incident occurred, this is perfectly normal.
