It also can be bad in Germany when you drive on days with bad traffic :P
But generally speaking our roads work quite well to travel fast:
70% of German federal freeways (Autobahn) have no speed limit, 20% have limited speeds and ~10% adaptive speeds (including no speed limit) which adapts to traffic conditions.

We definitely need to know Etron's consumption at 200. It might be insightful to tell whether Etron's drivetrain is inefficient, or if it's the poor aerodynamics.
The most drag in any car comes from the rolling resistance of the tires themselves.

Please provide a link to a reliable source to back this assertion. I think you’ll have a hard time finding one, but if you do then I’m open to correction.
@@actually5004 Only at relatively low speeds. Rolling resistance does not depend on speed. Wind resistance increase with the power of 2. So at some speed (usually less than 100 km/h depending on the car) the air resistance is the most important factor.

It is pretty common driving at night fast. When I have to go from Austria to France I always plan my route to pass Germany during the night exactly for this reason. I drive usually 180+ (if no restrictions because there are areas with restrictions) for a few hours, no problems
Great that the car works properly but the range is a huge problem here. I had the opportunity to drive similarly at night in a Mazda 6 sedan 2.0 petrol 165 PS. I drove 180-220 km/h without refueling (60l tank) and drove 390 km in less than 2 hours and I still had almost 10 liters of fuel left. This means 3x greater range than Tesla with the possibility of refueling to full in a few minutes and continuing driving!
Thank you Bjorn, also the the long term follower that met up with you. Wow that was so nice of them.

This guy is so funny. I love listening to him. Keep up the great humor
Staying on the right most lane when doing high speed can be tricky, often you have lane grooves (Spurrillen) from trucks there and you don't want to hit those doing 200. So if traffic allows it I prefer the mid lane as well, faster cars and bikes can still pass.. and you automatically give space for the next on ramp when people try to merge on the Autobahn doing 80-100
wrong allways keep right

Björn here's a strech of the Autobahn I can recommend, as I've driven there myself last year twice.
The A92 from Munich to Deggendorf is 134km long and I think after the Munich airport the unlimited part starts until Deggendorf. There used to be a construction at Moosburg last year but it should be finished. At the section Landshut there's a short 130 limit but there's no radar, I drove that route last year and a Audi passed me at that section going way above 130.
Agreed, A92 is amazing. It's great on an early Sunday morning, was able to cruise at 200km/h most of the way in my rented 430d convertible. Only two lanes but great stretch of autobahn!
@@jamesdisnow
Even when I was visiting my friend who lives there I was going 170 as that's the max speed my small city car can do. I was able to hold that speed almost the complete track, even in the afternoon.
Here he can test the new vmax when the spoiler is applied, but he should do it at night as there won't be trucks blocking the right lane in case a car is passing.
It's also the only place for testing the new roadster's 400+ I think as it's almost complete straight.
The facinating thing at this Video is...that a not german guy know how to drive in germany...
Actually, all European Union countries have the same driving rules.
Except the speed limit that Germany doesn't have at some parts of the highways.
But despite the speed, the rule "Always drive on the right unless you overtake" exists in every European country.
Thank you so much for this content. I hope it will put some minds to rest. Cheers!
You are awesome!
Yes please! Test the E-tron. I really think Tesla has a major advantage in driveline efficiency over Audi.
Would you imagine the consumption numbers on that stretch for my Model-S 90D would be closer to MC Hammer og would it be closer to your Optimus Prime?
This was not a "clean" run. They did it in daytime, with traffic, speed limits, etc. I will get an e-tron and test it on the same A1 stretch at night.

"This rattling is really pissing me off.. oh whatever"
This video showcases the advantage of the new drivetrain and battery in the model 3. His P90DL only managed 20 minutes or something before throttling power
The S and X now got the same tech. Hope he'll test that too :)
Previously the inverter had the most trouble cooling and they completely switched that architecture :)
@@RubenKelevra Yeah you are right, a new S and X should perform much better than before. People always think it's the batteries that overheat. It's usually the inverter or the stator that overheats. I am not sure about the new S and X, but the model 3 actually uses the battery as a heatsink.
@@rudyyyxu hm. I have no idea where you get that information from, but you got that wrong :)
The heat is moved by glycol, there's zero heatpipes involved, everything is pumped.
On the motor is a heat exchanger to move the heat from the motor oil to the glycol.
The battery is on a completely separate, second glycol loop.
The first loop cools the charger (which is also the dc-to-dc converter) than the loop runs through the inverter and then through the heat exchanger of the motor.
The second loop runs through the computers (main and AP) and then through the battery.
The returns get cooled by a heat exchanger which is cooled by the second loop of the cold side of the AC unit. The first loop of the AC unit cools the cabin.
Not 20 minutes, it was 30 minutes:
ruclips.net/video/ojUFPKgs6iI/видео.html
@@RubenKelevra It looks like you are very knowledgeable on this subject. My information came from a motor Trend article that talks about the new track mode and thermal issues. My guess is that although batteries are on a different loop it could still share the thermal energy with the motors. Because model 3s don't have dedicated battery heaters and uses heat from motors instead.
A20 is the most empty and unlimited Autobahn. Try these. Is in the North from Luebeck to Greifswald and further.
It's only a four lane highway though, right?
@@rzvqvb yes but not much traffic except for the weekend

They should really allow standard cruise control (without the TACC system) up to any speed, like most cars.
I don't understand why they should limit cruise to 150 kmh
Speed limit?
Yes, especially when you are driving at 300km/h its so much better to have your right foot hovering over the brake instead of standing on the throttle...
So basically you are saying that all other car makers (that either limit CC to higher speeds or put no limit at all on it) have got this wrong?
You are not going to sell many cars in Germany if you limit CC to 150 kmh.
On another subject, with other cars I used CC to make sure I stayed below speed limits by setting cruise at relatively low values (say 50 kmh or even as low as 30) while driving through town or relatively narrow roads.
TACC is not done for this, and keeps bumping brakes when detecting potential obstacles on the side of the road: so basically you cannot use it.
Ideally the car should have both (standard CC to any speed and TACC for motorway cruise) and I don't really understand how hard can it be to allow both.
Awesome Video again, Bjørn! Thank you!
And I like your comments about EVs not being able to go fast on the Autobahn!
Nice one! Perfect condition for high speed driving at night 👌😃
During morning and evening on certain routes there is the phenomenon of fast driving managers in their 3.0L Diesel VW Passat,AUDI A4/A6,BMW 3 and 5 Series, fuel paid by their company with cruise control at ca. 230-250km/h in a convoy on the left lane. The leader is trying to get traffic out of the way and the rest follows on minimum distance in cruise control.
Yes, machen wir alle oft :P

The idea that you could legally drive this fast and for this long bewilders me coming from America.
I still think your new tires are NOT properly balanced for 200kph+. Take them back and tell them to balance them for higher speeds.
I hope u joking bcuz thats not how it works.
@@RubKot I think it may work like that, I think they balance the tires much more carefully in Germany compared to Norway or Sweden. At least so I have heard.
Almost all dealerships or manufacturer service departments (Tesla included) already use Hunter Roadforce machines to balance these wheels for any speed (to up 350 km/h or so).
The real problem here is the frequency response and the damping curve of the struts versus the weight of the vehicle not being rated for these speed at all.
@@actually5004 Thank you for taking time to explain this. I did not know.
@@actually5004 I doubt roadforce was used on his new tires when balancing was done.
Interesting video! Thank you for the effort Bjørn!
So... MC Hammer does 66.8 kWh in 133.3 km... 501Wh/km doing around 200 km/h
Hmm... sparks my interest to calculate something...
Energy density of diesel is around 10 kWh/L...
So MC Hammer consumed... 5.01 L/100 km of diesel doing this trip.
Comparable (in terms of size/weight) diesel ICE cars do around 12-14 L/100 km at this speed, if being quite generous...
And most have a 50-60 L fuel tank, so a 500-600 kWh battery so to speak.
Not too shabby, MC Hammer almost three times as efficient at these speeds!
Hope the battery energy density soon gets to being able to drive an EV at this speed for 90 min and have 10% left in the tank.
About 3 times as efficient sounds about right, considering the maximum efficiency of combustion engines is around 30-40%. Nice to see that the numbers hold up in an actual high speed test!
50 kWh are about 150 kWh in a ICE .
33% efficiency
1 liter diesel = 10'7 kWh
150 kWh : 10'7 kWh = 14 liter diesel
14 liter in hybrid
14 liter in ICE
14 liter in PHEV

At 43 min in, the guy overtaking you probably wanted the middle lane hogger you overtook (driving slowly) to use the right-most lane, not the middle lane.
No, watch the end to know why.
I experienced that the speedometer actually shows very accurate numbers. I measured the speed with GPS and the difference is like 2 km/h at most, even at 200 km/h.
i'd assume the speedo is the one that should show the most accurate since it measures wheel speed (or does it not?). Just a fraction of degrees deviation of the satellite would throw off the numbers
@@fetB the speedometer in cars (nearly) always shows a higher speed than one is actually driving, for legal reasons IIRC. Trucks and busses show the accurate speed. Our old Volvo for instance always shows 3kph more, no matter whether you're going 30 or 200.
Lolwutfordawin my company service car shows 10% more
@@fetB current GPS technology has an accuracy of like 3m. Besides that you nearly always have at least 8 satellites in sight providing you their positions (4 are required to give you an accurate position). So the more satellites you have in sight, the more accurate your position is. And often you have like 20 satellites in sight, so there shouldn't be any inaccuracy.
If only US drivers were as aware and courteous as German drivers..
That's because you have to spend 2K and many hours to get your driver's license in Germany...
It's not about the money per se... My point was, you have to put in quite some effort to get your license in DE, including exams. This way they ensure that people are capable of handling higher speeds
if you go 200, its fine to be on the middle lane because thats average speed (or rather slightly above) and someone faster always has the left to pass. Staying on the right at 200 just increases a potential conflict with someone joining the highway. It's basically reserved for trucks and joiners.
You just dont hug the left because there is a high chance someone faster than 200 come
Just see how many people complained about my driving in this video where I stayed on the middle lane at 200 km/h. People are always ABC = Always Be Complaining :D
ruclips.net/video/ojUFPKgs6iI/видео.html
Well, do it often and find out how much middle laners give you a headache... (Assuming right lane is free)
Happens multiple times during the day:
Normal car driving 180-200kmh in middle lane feeling fast
Car in the left lane drives with 210/220 driving his Passat to full speed.
I'm coming in from behind with 250 and I have to do a senseless hard braking and I totally loose my swing/momentum.
When the right lane is busy I go off the throttle earlier, but otherwise an experienced German driver would always go from middle lane to the right, the one in the left lane would go to the middle.
That's why there a rule for that in Germany, it simply decompresses the traffic. Same with lower speeds by the way.
I'm not offending, just giving you the background.
@Bjorn, cant argue against that. There are a lot of sticklers in Germany, for better or worse.
@Nick, no offense taken, and you're right, the rules are perfectly fine and make sense. It's just a bit situational, i suppose. In your example everything would be fine if that wanna-be-racecar Passat wouldn't block the fast lane, but take the 20 klicks out or just use the left to overtake and then get off again. Anyway, going right is the way to go, but in daytime/rush hour, it makes little sense with whats essentially a sportscar.
Same with night; It's so easy to overlook a joiner. Or maybe that's just me.
There will always be difference in driving style between someone visiting the autobahn few times per year versus someone with daily driving experience on it. The latter is required to get the unwritten rules everywhere in the world.
This is also true for autonomous driving, which doesn't work when programmed strictly to the written rulebook.
Well, i'd assume autonomous will be programmed to conform to an average speed and not attempt to squeeze an extra 10km/h to overtake or make a drag race out of it, so that should help a lot.
PS: it should also make for smarter lane switching via GPS or some sort of traffic profile a few hundred meters away.
for me and for most, cruising speed on the autobahn is 180km/h with smaller or older cars sitting at 160km/h
I reached 160 km/h only once in my life with a 75 hp (55kw) car.
Everything were shakeing so i slowed at 110 km/h.
How smooth is the autobahn to allow you to drive at that speed?
@@vlad_mr_97 The autobahn itself, where it is unrestricted is as smooth as a baby's bottom and has to be or they wouldn't allow for over 300km/h. Those speeds are the reason why the intense and thorough inspections in Germany as so crucial. As well as drivers knowledge of their tire speed ratings, since there are many.
@@oBseSsIoNPC ok so the autonahn with no speed limit is smoother that other streets or in germany every highway is very smooth?
Sory for my questions but i never was there and i can't immagine how a "no speed limit" highway could be.
@@vlad_mr_97 Hey, questions are great. Don't ever apologize for asking them, only jerks will ridicule you for it. So "technically" all production cars in Germany, do not exceed 270km/h They all claim to be limited to 250km/h, but most BMW for example go up to 265km/h High performance cars can still go faster yet. You can also acquire a racing license, that allows you to unlock the speed limit on certain vehicles and also mount racing tires. AFAIK it is not against the law to drive your Porsche 350km/h on racing slicks with said permit. And yes, the road surface for a Autobahn is of extremely good quality and much thicker than the average road. They also have such a thing as "whisper asphalt", which is smooth and dampens the tire roll noise. Autobahn turns are mostly banked in such a way, that you don't even need to steer into it. Autobahns are much SAFER to drive on that rural roads.

At 150 km/h, the range is 300 km. If you top up 15 minutes, you're good.
@@TsLeng You must be new... Google Tesla Roadster 2
@@TsLeng If you drive during the day, you will never be able to sustain 200 km/h (this video is only possible in a few places in Germany at certain times of the night). @Bjørn
If you need a stretch of Autobahn whithout speed limit where you can drive safely +/- 200Km/h even at daytime:
The A20 between Lübeck and Tribsees (just before Stralsund) is usually pretty empty - even at daytime.
Best time - of course - is saturday afternoon / sunday morning to be guaranteed a free run.
I do visit my parents near Stralsund 2-3 times per year and really enjoy engaging cruise control @ 200 Km/h for extended times on that stretch of Autobahn.
Sometimes even for the whole stretch in one go. At Tribsees there´s a road/bridge construction (there´s a crazy story behind it - at one time some part of the Autobahn "disappeared" into the swamp land underneath ...) which slows you down anyway ...
So, the mentioned part between Lübeck and Tribsees covers ~ 140 Kms without a general speed limit.
Btw. along the route there are 2 Tesla SC´s availlable at Wismar (about 45 Kms from Lübeck) and Autohof Pommerndreieck (about 23 kms after Tribsees).
I still drive an IC-engined vehicle - a Volvo V60 D4 - whose cruise control allows being engaged up to 200 Km/h - until I will switch to fully electric (planned in 2023) and it´s definately going to be a M3 SR+ then. (hoping for the 4680 Batteries being fitted into the M3 as well by then)

The assumption that 18" and non performance is even better with 200km/h is correct. Nextmove tested the most efficient Tesla ever the Model 3 RWD and it did 180km with 200km/h.
Also interesting, they found out, e-Tron gets more efficient compared to other EVs(like Model X) the higher the speed is. So not so bad aero after all, its probably the motors that are far more inefficient than Tesla 2012 motors! Also, Audi promised software updates for the bad efficiency in the future.
I'm owning the model 3 LR RWD and it feels very unstable at higher speeds over 150km/h compared to a BMW X1. So driving at this high speeds doesn't make any fun :/
They didn't count heat loss.
43:05 In this situation it was a follower. But it is is normal in Germany to say "Thank you" and/or "Sorry" with flashing the hazard lights, in case you see that again. :-)
Yes, I am fully aware of that. It's funny to read all the comments about the blinking. I know what those highway signals mean. After all, I have driven over 500,000 km for the past 5 years ;)
2:09 the car in the bottom left of the display
i still get a range of 500km if i drive 200km/h nonstop in a diesel car, electric cars are not made for that. but who cares if you don't drive in germany
Uhm, are you sure? Which car are you driving?
i get aprox 600km in passat b8 2.0 tdi
@@MrTurboDima So, what is your fuel consumption? In my Toyota Auris Hybrid (140HP) at ~180km/h it is ~1L/11km. So in theory, with the 45L tank it can go 495KM till 100% empty. My car is NOT efficient for high-way driving. It's not meant for the AutoBahn
You, sir, are a crazy legend. I was going to say, what happened to this guys tires after this. But it appears you showed this in your TPMS video.
@9:36 Bjorn driving 200kmh with Tesla 3 is passed by fuel BMW model X3 ;)
Kudos to you for staying on the right. You're doing a much better job than most germans.
43:14 he thanked you for letting him pass.
Nope. Watch the end of the video to understand why.
@@bjornnyland Oh ok I stopped the video after min 44😂
This shows the Model 3 is a proper freeway car, not one of those showoff EVs like Tesla used to make that could only pop off from a stop but then immediately want to stop again after only a few seconds of driving. I'll be happy if Tesla rolls these improvements into their older lineup (S, X).
Bjorn, how does the Model 3 do for keeping you warm during somewhat more normal driving (not short distance but not long distance)? Hmmmm ... maybe you're the wrong person to ask, since you think 59º is warm ...
From 2:47 to 42:57 you travelled for 131.1 km and it took 41 minutes and 10 seconds. That means 131100 meters in 2470s. So the average speed was 53.076 m/s (191.0736 km/h).
In 131.1 km the battery went from 99% to 10% so that means 89% of 75 kWh(=66.750 kWh).
This means that the consumption at that speed is 509.15 W/km or 3.184 kW/min.

Do this by day and for sure you won't get that far. Why ? You constantly would need to break for slow people on the left lane and speeding up needs a lot of power from the engine.
It’s weird that the 3 performance doesn’t allow cruise control at 200; even the Golf GTE does 210 with adaptive cruise control enabled 🤔
The Tesla? Well this guy did 😋 My GTE does 230 before the e-boost steps out. Haven’t had it go faster than 235; acceleration is extremely low (only a 150 bhp fossil engine) without that boost 😅
The TSI Golf I had before the GTE would only do 160 on adaptive. Wonder if they upped the 200m radar range in the GTE - and if it’s is enough to catch trouble ahead going 210 kph 🙈
I also did it a couple of years ago in Germany with my small POLO Bluemotion TSI. I have to say it is much less impressive than drive on that speed during the day time.
Those headlights are awesome!
I feel like driving in the rightmost lane all the time is actually more unsafe than using the left or middle lane, because of the possibility of stopped vehicles on the emergency/breakdown lane. That, and an animal is most likely to be waiting on the rightmost lane if trying to cross.
The way I look at it is making 20 lane changes within 5 minutes is more dangerous than making 0 lane changes within an hour.
If you know you will be passing people, you should not use the rightmost lane.
You should try Nurburgring!
At 43:12 the driver was probably using the hazard lights to thank you for letting them by. A hazard blink is a common thing British drivers do to show appreciation for something.
Why they then tapped the brakes or indicators from the inside lane... No idea.
+Mike Williams Watch the end of the video. It was one of my followers.
this isn't driving, its a strategic game. looks fun.
Chill video
I could not hear rattling but there was this constant whining sound coming from the driver (?) 😂
The limit where I live in highways is 100 km/h
Excellent. on a warm 15 deg summer day ... yeah ... in canada people are in shorts and T shirts when it is 10 deg C ... so in Europe ... really sweltering.
So with Tesla, you have to drive it slow so you don't have to stop and recharge every 100km? It works in USA with small speed limits but on deutsche autobahn it is not really nice. Any gasoline or diesel car, you can fill it up and drive for 600-800km at about 180-220kmh but with Tesla 100km (130km with this long range model) is maximum?
if you drive 200kph on the autobahn you will consume 20L. you will run out of fuel quick too
@@hardywoodaway9912nah 16-18 L max. With a 60L Tank you can travel at least 300 km and fill it up again in 5 min
Haha middle of the night "not too many cruise at these speeds". 200 km/h is pretty normal speed on German Autobahn and going slower will certainly result in you leaving the left lane within a few seconds.
Fantastisk Bjørn du er superkjendis i Tyskland og resten av Europa. Artig å følge med :-)
I guess that the model-3 Rear motor (IPMSynRM) has also less heat loss than the Front Motor and both motors of the model S and X (before the Raven : now having IPMSynRM on the Front). Anyway interesting to know that heat losses are not included in the figures shown by the car
woooo that road does not end, what a trip!!!
I love these long tests. It's as close to a live stream without being bothered by silly questions :D
I’m shocked you didn’t show the battery temp or the charging speed after that run. I would be one of those people that stick to the middle lane because like you said, the people in the right lane seem like they are standing still at those speeds.
Check my channel. I have it.
this is awesome, wished i could drive this road...
