Not really, all that's going to happen is the numbers shift, but the result would be the same. This is just a classic case of goal post shifting when it comes to comparing tesla. First it was range (they now have 300+ miles and when driven hard a Bmw m3 is going to have less range than that, i use 3/4 tank on my track days in my RS3), then it was charging times (which are either overnight so it doesn't matter or 20mins at a supercharger for the few time a year you will use it, so perfectly acceptable), then it was battery life (now 8year/unlimited km warranty and should last 500,000km, more than most ice), then it was track performance (which is now shown to be perfectly acceptable and beating a car that is at the top of its segment), now its you have to using a F1 driver to get the perfect lap from both (which the majority of us will never get, I have done thousands of racing laps over the last 10 years, I am still not a expert and make error's all the time, noone is perfect)..........its all crap, the fact is, EV's are now to the standard required, people just don't WANT them to be.

@@mr.blonde7812 You can make it almost 100% RWD or FWD. Maybe not the classical definition of 4wd, but I would considor the Tesla 4wd. 2 independent electric motors on each axel lets it torque vector better than an AWD car aswell.

Also, please get someone who can do laptimes consistently. And if you can't then please do 5+ laps and show all the laptimes for both cars. That way we can see what's going on. Honestly, is like to know what each is like to sit, how they feel, look, what it's like to do a normal driving routine. Open door, sit in, start, select some music, navigation, aircon. The usual things. Are Tesla's hard to use because it's all on a touchscreen?

I think they need something the BMW could win at. I can think of a few like ranges, refill time, CO2 generation, noise (they keep mentioning it in the video).
@@thdjjfsfh Range? 310 for the Tesla vs 316 for the BMW. It's a wash, especially considering driving conservatively I can get closer to 350 miles in a Tesla Model 3. The Tesla refills while I sleep. Even factoring in road trips, I spend way less time refilling my Model 3 throughout the year, and even then you can charge the Model 3 to 80% in around 30 minutes. CO2 emissions depend entirely on your locality. In my state, less than 1/3 of our power is produced using coal/fossil fuels, and a Tesla Model 3s CO2 emissions are less than half of your typical gasoline vehicle. Not to mention hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, brake dust, etc. There are maps where you can compare based on your state what is better for the environment, EV, Hybrid, or gasoline. By the way, gasoline doesn't win in a single state. Not sure how noise is a win for the BMW, lol.
I see what Aryan A is trying to say, but the time is squared, which has a much bigger effect than the acceleration. If you do the math comparing a Prius to the Model 3, you'll see that the Prius needs more than twice the distance the Tesla needs to get to 60. Forget about 0-100. The Prius barely gets there and probably needs a whole mile. I agree with you that 0-100-0 should be a measurement of distance.
IMO, 0-100-0 is measured by distance and time, we could all agree that the Tesla is faster 0-100 thats why the car stopped first than the BMW. But braking wise, BMW got the edge on the Tesla thats why it stopped a shorter distance.
This is a weak video because we do not see how consistent this guys laptimes are. Need someone who can actually do this. I hardly ever watch Top Gear videos because they lack entertainment and high quality. Not having a race driver do the laps is such a bad move. I've done go-karts, a few trackdays on bikes (knee down) and cars but I know I'm not someone who can do lap after lap within 0.5s each lap. I doubt this guy can either. Which means a 1.5-2.0 second difference could be him. This is not "Top" gear, it's not even Average Gear.
It's so pintless to try to make "drifting" so special when it's almost ALWAYS a powerslide. Pro drifters use wight transfer or the hydro handbrake to get it sideways and then hold it sideways on, guess what, the throttle. So are they drifting for a short amount of time until they're poweroversteering? Is it only a drift if there's a transition from one corner to another? Is it a drift if the "powerslide" gets held sideways longer than in the Video? At what point does a drift stop being a powerslide, or start being one. Let's just make it simple and say a drift, a slide, a powerslide, a skid, it's all just plain old Oversteer.

No. Plus, I bet 99% of the people complaining about this guy's driving skills would run slower laps and smaller power slides than this driver. Most buyers will get more from this amateur driver test than professional driving.
Sure does. He lifted off for SO long in that first corner in the BMW. Easy 2 second loss in just that corner. The last corner he took way too slow in the BMW, turned right in, while the Tesla was pretty much spot on the racing line. It even matters which car he drove first. He got used to the Tesla being a cow, then tried to treat the BMW the same way, nice and gentle, rip it out of the corners. It's the safe route to be fair. If he warmed up on the BMW and then took the Tesla for a spin, he would have ended up in a spin... several times over. Heavier car at same speeds will go wider.
Incredible how far electric vehicles have come in any case. 10 yrs ago they were a joke, today we're arguing about whether the chosen driver impacted the results of performance challenges when comparing one against an M3.
@aj lana it's only because it has AWD, but this guy was very biased. HE LOST CONTROL ON THE TESLA!!!!! HOW IN THE HELL DID HE NOT BRING THAT UP AGAINST IT??? OR THE FACT THE HE WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL SEVERAL TIMES??? He was VERY biased, and not even a good driver.
@@stevendufour LoL. They didn't use the performance edition of BMW. And of cource, eletric motors have a great torque advantage but thats it. The BMW M3 2018 does not get 34 MPG!!! It only gets 17/25 or combined 20 MPG!! Also, MPG isn't a range, that's an efficiency! Since it has a capacity of 15.8 gallons, the BMW M3 gets a range of 316 miles with an average 20MPG. Come on guys, at least put a little effort into your data.
@@edwardbrearey6413 ah yes, fair point. Nonetheless, they are still comparing two different metrics. However, the cars have similar range, one with 316 miles and one with 310 miles.
I am a through and through petrol head, however drove a Tesla Model 3 a while back and was blown away, amazing car. For a daily driver & even roads trips, this is it. Will be my next car once I've sold the VW.
It is quite possible. Say for simplicity the Tesla is faster off the line but decelerates slower at say 80 to 100 range, so spends more of it's time at high speed but the BMW had a reverse of this thanks to the nature of ICE motors and lesser traction control than the motors/computers of the Tesla the distance travelled by the Tesla would be higher since more time is spent at in the high speed and not much at all in the low speed range but the reverse applies for the BMW. Again the total time makes no allowance for the split in deceleration at different speeds, so for example the Tesla brakes less hard at high speed and the BMW brakes hard at high speed but the BMW brakes fade they could have the same braking time but with the Tesla travelling a larger distance. This is probably not the actual mix of reasons, but how the time and distance don't need to match can make sense.
It just showed that the Tesla accelerates faster but the BMW has way better brakes. As for that being a "brake test" the results shown it is not. I was as confused as you were.
fghftghfghgf I dont know what to believe about this model 3... someone beats the gt2rs with it in 0-100 but it loses to an rs3 in a quarter mile even off the launch. I think you’re right, the model 3 is an amazing car for the money but there’s a huge reviewer bias present because none of these comparisons add up.
Tesla @3:46 M3 @5:40 Same curve. I'm an AMG fan and that M3 looks to be more stable. He may be driving the Tesla harder which is why he spun later. Going to hard. But I believe the M3 could do a better time. Let's get Chris Harris to remake this.
I can see. I also see Mercedes going hybrid to simulate the instant torque like electric vehicles. I think Hybrid cars will outperform electric cars due to weight savings. This M3 is lighter with less power but only a second slower in track times. Imagine an electrical motor instantly adding 130lbs of torque. With barely any added weight.
Not to mention the standing start. Nobody ever measures lap times from a standing start. Also 0-100-0 is always measured by distance. However, they had to do something to make the BMW lose or they wouldn't get that sweet cheque from Elon.

@@derbigpr500 This is a short tight track, therefore the Tesla has the advantage with its acceleration out of corners. Chris Harris tried the model S and he felt motion sickness while driving. So don't expect him to drive any Tesla cars. Also an F90 m5 competition have a price tag in the 220k+ region. Errr... leave in the dust I mean, because there's no exhaust.
@aj lana I'm not the biggest fan of BMW's latest offerings, but to call BMW obsolete and failed ignorant at best. They sell very well. I think the fact that the BMW was so close in time even though it was way down in torque, one of the more important factors in such a tight course, is a testament to the engineering. Regardless of anyone's views, I think we can all mutually agree which we'd rather have on the track. Edit: As someone else said, have the test at a higher speed course and the result would probably be different.
@Tomi Hanzo It is a particularly hard job to compete with those who have 100 +/- years of experience, so then it is quite impressive that a beginner like Tesla has managed to give them competition, and they have also improved, which is going to continue. Some also think tesla is 10/10 and Jaguar is 8/10 and visa versa.
1/4 mile: OK. 0-100-0, OK, maybe. Hot lap (uh, get a pro). Drift? Who cares? How about a slalom, 60-0 braking, 100-0 braking, you know, things that actually matter when driving the car?
@@einfachben0399 No, it was about proving Elon's tweets right or wrong. I had to watch the video again (it's been 10 months!) and I'm even more convinced this was a bullshit test. If it is "about fun," then there should not be a winner. Musk's claims were that the Tesla is 15% quicker, better handling and faster on a track, then those are the things that should be tested and tested well. 1) Musk's claim of 15% quicker: 12,6 sec for M3, 11,9 sec for Tesla. 12,6 x 15% = 1,89 seconds. 12,6 - 1,89 = 10,71. So Elon's first claim is false. The Tesla is 0,7 seconds faster, which is "only" 5,4& quicker. Yes, definitely quicker, but Musk's claim was not correct. That being said, maybe a professional driver could get the Tesla 15% faster. Probably not, as 0-100 in an electric car is dead easy. BMW 1: Tesla 0 2) Better handling: This is where a slalom and even better an autocross with professional drivers should be used as a comparison. In fairness to both cars, it should either be with a driver who races both kinds of cars, or racers of roughly the same level of success/skill in each of the two different kinds of cars 3) The track test should be run by the same as the autocross. And that is all that should be tested. Having two tests of acceleration without the 15% caveat basically guarantees that the Tesla can't lose. And again, if it were just about "fun" then you don't give scores or times, you just give "impressions" from an average driver taking the cars out about town and on a track.

At the ‘Ring; Tesla model 3 P 7’44”. BMW M3, 7’35” and the M3 CS, 7’28”. Tesla is the sprint master, but racing isn’t just stomping on the throttle and hanging on. Sometimes a driver has to steer and brake.

Flash357 No, but I would love to see a professional driver go around in one... just by you reacting to my comment is the very reason why a professional driver should’ve done the “lap time” to begin with. Claiming one car being faster based off of your own limitations and not the vehicles itself? Isn’t accurate, when there is already a set lap time for one of the vehicles with a better time. A professional driver would have tracked a similar time to the one that set the fastest lap for that particular car... that journalist, didn’t even come close. Nor did he even come close to what the Tesla could achieve with a professional driver operating it.
Enrique Madera I get your point but its not like that ,there are easy to drive fast cars (tesla 4wd low senter of gravity, instant torque)and hard to drive fast cars( the bmw rwd higher senter of gravity atc ),that means that a “bad driver” will be faster with the Tesla even if the bmw had the straight line performance just because the bmw is more challenging to drive on the limit

Let me explain why Tesla is doing so well. You can’t have an bmw performance car as a daily driver. The mpg on it is just way too low. I myself always had 2 cars. My commute car and the weekend performance M car. Now I have to pick one for certain reasons I will not explain here. No worry about oil change at all and fewer moving parts check. Tesla performance price lower than M that can get into the 80k or even more. If you not tracking your car it’s the Tesla all day for real world purpose. No 93 octane needed here. The car is a unicorn
The one and only measurement that matters for a trackday car is the flying lap time...which you conveniently left out for an obvious reason. The 0-100-0 test has always been about distance, not time.

As 30 year aircraft mechanic I feel that the M3 is a fine machine , however if you want a car that's well engineered and will most likely cost you more than half as much to maintain and drive I would choose the Tesla . Its a no brainer if you have a place to plug it in at night.
@Munx You can use auto correction / completion, I would think english is not that really difficult from German. My mother tongue is french (I'm from Canada). I try my best not to make too many mistakes. In my opinion it's a question of respect.
It's rare to have a bona-fide track comparison between a Tesla and a worthy ICE competitor, so this should have been exciting. But then they put this guy in charge.
Fernando Fragoso there will be no option for a less powerful RWD version. The “regular” one will be AWD, and AWD will make it much faster in a straight line, and seeing as it’s a new car it will obviously be faster than the old one, so it should beat this around a track

The tyres on the bmw didn't make a squeek, it had so much more left in it. Also the 0-100-0 is measured in distance, not time
I see what Aryan A is trying to say, but the time is squared, which has a much bigger effect than the acceleration.
@Aryan A WHAT?????
IMO, 0-100-0 is measured by distance and time, we could all agree that the Tesla is faster 0-100 thats why the car stopped first than the BMW. But braking wise, BMW got the edge on the Tesla thats why it stopped a shorter distance.

0 to 100 to 0 The BMW did it in a shorter distance and lost???? How does that work?
Bob Houghton the tesla for being faster it reached 100 quicker therefore it was ahead of the bmw and subsequently it started breaking first too.

Same curve.
Also an F90 m5 competition have a price tag in the 220k+ region. If we are talking those price ranges we could throw in the Tesla Roadster since it's in the same price category.
But if you put the roadster in that playing field it's going to smoke that bmw. Errr... leave in the dust I mean, because there's no exhaust.
Tesla smoke the m3 😂😂😂😂
rampage the sneaky lil bitch lol that means nothing a viper acr or Camaro zl1 1le would still smoke any bmw.
8:03 this wins "Most boring Slowmotion of the year"
Can we let someone have a go who knows what they're doing please?
@aj lana I'm not the biggest fan of BMW's latest offerings, but to call BMW obsolete and failed ignorant at best. They sell very well. I think the fact that the BMW was so close in time even though it was way down in torque, one of the more important factors in such a tight course, is a testament to the engineering.
Regardless of anyone's views, I think we can all mutually agree which we'd rather have on the track.
Edit: As someone else said, have the test at a higher speed course and the result would probably be different.
what on earth are you talking about .... hope its not the i-pace because that is not better than a Tesla.@Tomi Hanzo
Yes, one must always have something to blame for. If you think he was doing something wrong, then you can do the same test yourself!
BMW Forever, it a purist thing, techies will never understand
BMW 1: Tesla 0
2) Better handling: This is where a slalom and even better an autocross with professional drivers should be used as a comparison. In fairness to both cars, it should either be with a driver who races both kinds of cars, or racers of roughly the same level of success/skill in each of the two different kinds of cars
3) The track test should be run by the same as the autocross.
And that is all that should be tested. Having two tests of acceleration without the 15% caveat basically guarantees that the Tesla can't lose. And again, if it were just about "fun" then you don't give scores or times, you just give "impressions" from an average driver taking the cars out about town and on a track.
Wow Top Gear... This was bad for a comparison "test"! Who says a flying start is nonsense and a standing start is how it's done?!?! So you basically had 3 drag races.
Every stig lap ever on top gear began with a standing start though.
That is a good point@@LethalJizzle, but he's not the Stig, as he clearly demonstrated - so consistency is lacking. Plus, they already proved that the Tesla launches quicker, so why not take that out of the equation and just go with a flying lap, like almost all qualifying sessions in motorsport. Just seemed a little biased.
@@NateRisch when you look nurburgring records etc..., they're all standing starts. Only in championships do they use flying starts.
on the other part, I kinda agree that 0-100-0 and 400m races were a bit redundant
Cause a standing start benefits the tesla. Most these comparisons by top gear are bias or set up befor the test. Think about it....a model 3 out performing a m3 on a track?. Nah dont think so with a professional driver. You can tell they didnt want m3 to win buy some of the lines taken on the track. Questionable I think compared to model 3. Leaves me to believe it was meant to win (model3) befor the race started. This is first one I've watched in a long time....now I remember why I quit watching them.

@@MICHGO1 Watched the review of Chris Harris about the Tesla. And it's completely far from what you are even saying. All his points clearly makes sense and he actually enjoyed driving the car and at the same time he pointed out the flaws of the Tesla Model S P100D such as the build quality and how 1 trick ponies they are. (Being only faster off line up to 0 - 100 MPH and 1/4 Mile Times) and how a slow 500 BHP Porsche GT3 with a manual transmission sports car that can catch up and beat it above that speed.
Top Gear was only Top Gear with the Original Crew.
Oh, with Noel Edmonds, William Woollard, Angela Rippon, Sue Baker? Can't say I agree mate. I much preferred the reboot with Clarkson, May and Hammond. The original crew made the show more factual, rather than entertainment-based like the reboot.

one thing I want to know about this is; what was the state of charge on the Tesla? and was the battery prepped? going on road trips with a friend who has a Tesla there is a VERY noticeable performance increase if the battery is fully charged AND hot from either supercharging or conditioning the battery.
At the ‘Ring; Tesla model 3 P 7’44”. BMW M3, 7’35” and the M3 CS, 7’28”. Tesla is the sprint master, but racing isn’t just stomping on the throttle and hanging on. Sometimes a driver has to steer and brake.
Why brag about not using a professional driver in a test where its car vs car? The whole point of using a pro driver is to eliminate that unknown.
@Fresh Trees But they're not doing real world tests. They're doing car vs car.
You think people like us would be driving track battles too?
TL;DR it was a bad test even if I think Electric would still win
@Fresh Trees I think so too
Because a man with a degree in journalism and no professional racing background, won’t be able to bring out the full potential of each car on a track... he did a 1.35 in the BMW to were a professional did a 1.32 on that same track.
The rest of the tests? I agree with.
@@Sorry_ImTruthfulSo you are saying that a professional driver wouldn't have done better with Tesla also? You can't just ignore one car in the test...LOL

Its relative, right? Even a super pro driver the results are the same. The numbers might be better but the results are the same.
If he's driving both cars it shouldn't matter how good or bad he is.
@@duketlam9206 nope. Its much easier to drive a AWD electric car than the M3. On the Nürburgring with non semi-slicks the Tesla wont go under 8 minutes.

Let me explain why Tesla is doing so well. You can’t have an bmw performance car as a daily driver. The mpg on it is just way too low. I myself always had 2 cars. My commute car and the weekend performance M car. Now I have to pick one for certain reasons I will not explain here. So let me choose.I can change the drive mode on my Tesla to chill and get better mpge equivalent than a Prius (more than double). I can switch it to sport and still perform equal and close to equal as a M3. Mileage better than Prius , check
Fast or as fast as a m3 check. No worry about oil change at all and fewer moving parts check. Tesla performance price lower than M that can get into the 80k or even more. If you not tracking your car it’s the Tesla all day for real world purpose. No 93 octane needed here. The car is a unicorn
M3 driver didn't even build up any boost on that launch 🚀
It's pretty much a mature version of i-VTEC I know because I'm a honda guy and M3's are Thhhicc asf
The one and only measurement that matters for a trackday car is the flying lap time...which you conveniently left out for an obvious reason. The 0-100-0 test has always been about distance, not time.

There is a drift mode in tesla. You can actually make it FWD, RWD or anything in between. Traction control also can be set anything from 0 to 100%. Very easy to drift.
That was added in Track Mode V2, which hadn't been implemented when this video was made. Drifting, and track performance all better with v2.
