I've been enjoying your Video series so far and admire your enthusiasm and skills, along with your meeting some of your Mates!
I am a retired Diesel Truck Mechanic and sailor so I can identify with you and your project! I would like to suggest that you build a set of wide stairs going up into the boat, in lieu of using a ladder. This would not only make for a safer environment but would also save "wear and tear" on you while making it easier to get material in/out of the boat.

Nice project en video's! For the load side...maybe adding an immersion heater element(s) in a water tank, instead of a normal resister as load, to have hot water on windy days. And on the 230-240 side, since you create electricity, you might consider an earth rod, to have good grounding and use of RCB/RCCB on the output for extra safety. Rod length and thickness is dependent on the type of ground the barn is on. A house electrician must know this. Also the generator needs a grounding but I do not know if those can be the same. Good luck with your project, and I hope you can continue under these lockdown circumstances.

2 yrs ago Visiting Tally Ho popped up in my feed. Watching ever since.
Your project just popped up and I’ll be watching.
In 2008 I was working in a Marina in La Paz Mexico, a chance encounter introduced me to a ferro cement sailboat.
She was originally named Harmony built by Patrick Cotten in Half Moon bay in the 70’s. He also built other ferroboats. I believe
Harmony was his first. He wrote a book "Harmony in Yacht Design, Construction and Cruising" ... really good book !! amazon has it.
Cotten sold the boat to John Amos (the actor/ really great guy) who renamed her Halley’s Comet after a play his daughter wrote.
In 2008 John had her in La Paz as non-profit foundation and day sailing venture for underprivileged children.
I met John in the Marina Bar and after chatting for a while he invited me aboard, also gave me the book, signed to him by Cotten.
I was in awe of how beautiful the boat was. The hull was so fair It was hard to believe it was cement, smooth as a glass hull.
So quiet below deck too. And like icing on a cake there was a 88 key piano built in to the salon too. Amazing!
    Google search for pics.

I was hoping that you would be telling us that you were going to sell the barn After you are done with it in order to recoup some of the funds you put into it! It would seem the correct thing to do unless you are getting a reduction in the space rent. Either way, you did a fine job of building it and it would be a real asset to the yard.

Hi Finn from New Zealand, I'm on a similar journey and three years into it. Will be watching as you post, best of luck! I had to stop the boat as it was lockdown in the workshop or at home, as it's a pretty cold shop and winter is coming on for us the house won sadly. NZ lockdown is pretty strict and I'm only allowed to visit the shop to check it while i'm out shopping for food or essential. Who on earth decided that building a boat is not essential??? It's all about having (possibly) an accident that requires hospital intervention and straining medical resources. Good luck buddy, Paul

Two minutes in and I thought you were going to do yourself a real nasty on that ladder...it made my eyes water.
I am surprised at the amount of rot in that timber for a boat that never made it into the water, what did they use? No matter what, I think you made the right choice chopping the top off for easier access and hopefully an easier build and of course you can do a proper job of the top later.

From what I've learned watching the Tally Ho project, wooden boats have much more of a tendency to rot in fresh water than salt water, and problems arise when they've been out of the sea for a while. This boat has likely been sat out in the rain for a long time

Stay safe Finn, followed you across from Tally Ho. Australia is plenty crazy too. Keep the videos coming, well watch them. Always will be opportunity for people with hand skills. Dont forget with wind you will still be able to draw power at night. So your dump and fuse setup is different to solar. Im having the same confusion. Thankfully have grid feed in, roof top solar, so somewhat better off

Really enjoying your channel Finn, just binge watched your videos and its come on great.
Just one thing though I would seriously think about those gable overhangs on your barn, the constant wind over time will get under them and throw your tins all over like a pack of cards. I would consider cutting them flush and capping them or run some timber over the ends and screw them down with lots of screws, I always found tek screw weak in wood. I just did some work on a shed at home and i run heavy duty ratchet straps from the floor over the roof and own to the floor the other side, worked a treat.
Good luck with your build and I look forward to future vlogs.

Hey, Finn, whos Vauxhall is that? It made me think of my 1964 VX 490 I loved so much. Glad you're getting onto the boat work, but that barn is a well done job in its own!

Best option for off-grid emergency lighting are 5w usb lights, look like light bulbs on cord, less than fiver on eBay, cheaper if multibuy, then you need power banks like Tomi, a liitokala lii-400 smart charger and a load of spares or repair laptop batteries., Chuck any cell which is damaged, corroded or heats up when charging. Pretty bright lights and would be good in van and boat.

The shop is looking well-appointed! Always inspiring to see you working on such huge pieces solo. Might have to make some sawdust myself to get through this house arrest!
