For more detail on using Narrator visit aka.ms/NarratorGuide
There are three ways to turn Narrator on or off:
    1. In Windows 10, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter on your keyboard. In earlier versions of Windows, you may need to press Windows logo key + Enter.
    2. On the sign-in screen, select the Ease of access button in the lower-right corner, and turn on the toggle under Narrator.
    3. Go to Settings -- Ease of Access -- Narrator, and then turn on the toggle under Use Narrator.
To provide feedback on how to make Narrator better, visit aka.ms/AccessibilityFeedback.

Sean, why in the world didn't your team simply add a "Read Aloud" option in the right click drop down menu?
It isn't just blind people, fascinated by every useless bit of web page data, that want to use this function.
The simplest and most intuitive way, allowing users to highlight the text they want, right clicking and selecting read aloud would be such an easy and elegant approach.
The Windows experience is an antisocial experience and each year it gets worse.

Your tutorial explains everything except how to make narrator read the page on the screen, and not send the message "no item in view".

Only Microsoft could make something as simple as a text-to-speech program so unbearably complicated. Just use the Readme extension in Chrome instead. Then you can just select text, right click and have it read to you.

I've tried over and over again and I cannot get narrator to read a web page. If there is a navigable item on the web page I can tab to it and read it but if there is more content on the page there doesn't seem to be a way to get it to obey 'start reading' or 'read window.'

I had an Apple PC in the 1990s that could easily read my text documents for me. Why is this so hard to do with Narrator? I just want it to read my text, not have to jump around navigating paragraphs or reading every single item on the screen. I'm just repeating what several others have already said. Give us a simple guide, fellas.

How to have an iPad read the screen? 0) Enable Speak Selection one time - it's forever or until you disable it. 1) Highlight the text to read, 2) click 'Speak', 3) there is no 3 - it's just two steps, you don't have to re-enable it or start it each time because it's always ready to use. This is Apple vs Microsoft in a nutshell.

I have aphasia and when previously using a Mac, the Accessibility function of Speech to Text was fantastic. It enabled me to highlight anything, press CMD > Esc and then have the Mac speak it back to me out loud to ensure I'd written it correctly. I'm struggling to find anything similar here on Windows as the Narrator does too much, I simply want it to read what I've highlighted. Any help would be much appreciated.

      Hello Tom,
Your comment caught our attention, and we’d like to help.
The Narrator has the capability to read highlighted text by using keyboard shortcuts. In this case, you would use Narrator + Shift + Down Arrow to read selected text. The shortcuts are described here: msft.it/6057nBGjT
It will read the highlighted text whether it's in a browser or application when using that command.
If this option is not what you want, you can also send a feedback msft.it/6058nBGjp so that our team can look forward to your ideas and improve our services.
      More information about Narrator: msft.it/6059nBGjV
If you have any questions, please let us know. We’ll be here for you. Kind regards.

are there any functions within Microsoft that let you check smaller sections rather than use Narrator to read everything? After just switching again from the Mac where I could simply press CMD + Tab and have the Accessibility function speak that section out to me to ensure what I'd written was correct. Anything I noticed that wasn't correct after hearing the Mac speak, I could change before sending it onto someone else. Is there something similar on the PC rather than using Narrator which works on everything? Otherwise, I always have to copy text out to somewhere like Grammarly or Google Translate etc before sending it on to where I'd like it to go.

I don't like it reading everything I click on. Now I know what a "landmark" is.

Hi there. Thanks for commenting. We are here to help with your question on how to use MS Excel Narrator Screen Reader.
Narrator is a screen reader and text-to-speak tool that allows you to hear text and screen elements read aloud. To enable this feature in Windows 10, go to Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator to view the Narrator pane. Turn on the Narrator button.

Narrator is totally crazy, like someone that can't shut up.
Isn't there a simple way to make it shut up the talking all the time and just do a simple task like READ the selected text?
It reads 300 characters and stops. How weird.
Why not enable it to shut up, let you select the text you want narrated, right click for a dropdown menu so you can select narrate selected text?
That wouold be too easy, right? Instead, they want us to learn 1000 key combinations to go up down left right start stop. Just combine the whole mess into a couple of things like select and right click, then select from dropdown. Never thought of that?

      3. Under the Change what you hear when reading and interacting section, you can turn off options like:
      • Hear advanced details, like help text, on buttons and other controls.
      • Hear hints on how to interact with buttons and other controls.
      • Hear audio cues when you perform actions.
      4. To stop it from reading landmarks, auto-reading tabs, and applications, look for settings related to Verbosity and Navigation. You can reduce the verbosity level to hear less detailed information.
