That sure sounded like he was challenging you to a reading duel, I'd dare say. So let's see what you can do, Dave! -Dusty I mean, here's your chance to "Be Radical, eh".
Such a nostalgic trip down memory lane! Back in the early 1970s, I used to listen to this poem and others like it on the record 'The Spell Of The Yukon' with Stuart Hamblen. I'm likely around your dad's age, and it warms my heart to know he's passing on these wonderful poems to the next generation. Your reading was fantastic. I'm sure many of us would be thrilled to hear you read more poems and stories.
That was a blast. Haven’t heard that poem in forever. As for content, I’m 58, so I’m really enjoying seeing how someone of your generation tackles living that lifestyle. I enjoy cabin building stuff a lot, but I’m also finding I enjoy seeing what’s important to you and how you prioritize. It helps me to imagine how future generations will put their own spin on “the old ways”.
I just heard it recently on VanlifePlus read by Matthew of that channel. Of course, I can never hear Robert Service poetry enough, especially by great voices. ❤
Well done! Your voice is perfect for storytelling, and the music and fire were spot on. Would love to hear more of these poems, short stories, etc. interspersed with your Alaska and cabin adventures. Thank you.
I have never seen your show or your dads. It popped up today for some reason. I loved it. The way you incorporated the sound effects and the sound of your voice and the fireplace. Wow. I’m going to listen again. I’d definitely like to hear more. Thanks Now subscribing
Great reading! My 8th grade English teacher read that and then gave extra credit to any one memorizing it. That was over 60 years ago. Have not heard it since then. Thanks!
Mick, when you started your channel, I asked hubby to listen to your voice. His eyes got big when he saw you and heard that voice! You can make money off of narrating stories sir! You get it from dear ol, dad for sure. More, more, I say. Bravo! Bravo! Awesome story. It puts you right there with these men. Don’t stop.
That was awesome ! I had never heard it before. And I love how you set the camera on the woodstove. That was a really nice touch. You have an amazingly deep voice for such a young man. It's kind of freaky. How you must have loved when your Dad read that to you and your sister. 11/2/23 ~ ETA: Mick, I just listened to this again. I love audiobooks and you would be amazing as a narrator of audiobooks. You should look into that cause it would give you additional income as well as give you something splendid to do with your downtime in those long Alaskan winters. Check it out ! You got a gift, you may as well use it.
I love the Robert Service poetry. I was reading his poetry aloud to a group of young adults at a party at church (I was a young adult at the time) a young redheaded woman walked through as I was reciting my favorite Robert Service poems and after we were married ( we've been married 48years now) she told me she thought I was so weird. Lol it was a big building and I didn't beg anyone to listen to me, they just gradually gathered and listened.
Love you doing this! This was my late husbands favorite poem…so much so that he had it all memorized! He would recite it around our campfires for our own children. He was born and raised in the heart of the Adirondacks and although he loved his home lakes and mountains he long ed to go to Alaska and finally did. Thank you for reminding us!
Thanks for sharing this powerful poem by Robert Service! I used to recite this poem many decades ago and forgotten much of it so I am grateful you stirred my memory and moved my soul. One of my other favorites was "The Charge of the Light Brigade." Mick, you did such a splendid reading that I would love to hear you read the Charge of the Light Brigade with such passion and energy!!! 😁🙌
I havent heard this story before and as a listener, I was transported to the cold Dawson Highway watching the men, their sleds and dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Winter spent by the fire listening to the old stories is timeless - thank you for sharing. I like all the videos you share with us, I enjoy the mix.
Mick you have such a wonderful voice to read. Please read more. You could do audio books if that would make you happy. Take Care Mick, your videos are awesome.
That was an outstanding reading. You've a great broadcast voice. Keep the content coming. The readings plus letting us join you in your everyday progress on your new homestead will keep us watching.
Robert Service was a special gift to the Yukon and Arctic. I've always liked his work and you did very, very well with it. A few years back I rode to Alaska with friends and we stayed at the Robert Service Campground somewhere in the Yukon. Keep up the good stream and stay warm.
That was great. You have a great voice for reciting. A fond memory for me of that poem was my dad reciting it by memory when he was 92 years old and I was taking care of him before he passed at 93. I am an Alaskan at heart. Lived up there, raised a family up the there e for 31 years. Wish I was still there ❤❤❤
Thank you for reading this poem, it to holds a special place in my heart. My uncle used to read it to us as we sat around a campfire.. like your father.. he too had a gift to read. A few years after the last reading I sadly lost my father, I was devastated. My father was a bush man and alway preferred the North, he truly missed being there in his later years. The day came where we had to set things up for his memorial, my uncle asked each of us if there was something we would like done or read etc at his service. Each person had their say and soon my uncle looked at me and said, do you have any last requests. As odd as it was I asked my uncle to read “The Cremation Of Sam McGee”, he agreed. At my father’s memorial my uncle mentioned to all that he had a special request from one of his children. He went on to say it seemed odd at the time, the night before he pondered, it all came clear. He said “My brother very much was like Sam McGee in many ways, often being so cold he was never sure to make it home”. So.. he then read the poem, not a dry eye at the service, many agreed it was perfect. A bit of a long story but I wanted to let you know the poem has special meaning to many others. You did a wonderful job.. many thanks again.
Being Alaskan born, I've always loved Robert Service's poems. Excellent reading! I've been thoroughly enjoying the video documentation of your adventures! Thank you so much!
That was awesome in your deep voice! This is your channel, it's fun to know all sorts of things about the guy who's "building" a cabin and a life in Alaska! 😄
Great minds think alike! Great job! I love this poem, and once made a video of reading it by a campfire on a winter's night (on my Mountaincoffee Outdoors channel). I just wish that I had the whole thing memorized!
Magnificent reading! I don't believe I have ever heard that poem. I'm from Tennessee, which I found kind of funny and creepy at the same time. Great job and great voice.
Well done Mick! Bravo...my only regret was not waiting until dark to listen to your brilliant rendition. More please of Robert Service, you have the perfect voice for these "cabin tales" as winter draws nigh. You brought a shiver to my shoulders and a smile to my face.
That was wonderful! It fits a cold Alaskan night :) I've always loved those types of spooky poems, "Annabelle Lee" (Edgar Allen Poe) was one of my favorite poems as a kid, my Mom used to read "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man" by James Whitcomb Riley. I'd love to hear more of your favorite poems/stories if you have them!
As you probably already know, you have a good speaking voice. You are also creative. I loved the background music and sound effects. I listen to a lot of audiobooks on RUclips. This could be another channel for you if you want to put in the effort. At any rate, keep working and this could be a nice "side hustle" for you. Not just audiobooks on RUclips, but other venues, such as commercials or cartoons. In the internet age, you might be able to "phone in" your work.
Hey Mick, you're a talented and gifted young man. I'm really impressed with your reading of the poem. That was very well done and I could visualize the whole thing. Haha 😂 you definitely have the voice for it. 😉 Have you ever considered becoming a teacher? I think you'd make an excellent one. ❤ Thanks for sharing!
You are really onto something with this. Yes, good to see your homestead progress, but lots of others are doing that in Alaska. Reciting tales like that about the history and magic of Alaska as winter comes in is different and special, and you have the gift of a narrators voice. Hope to hear more. Loved the special effects and reading with a fire. Maybe Edgar Allen Poes “ The Raven”, or something similarly scary from Alaska on Halloween?
Dude, no lie, when I was an incoming freshman I went to a summer camp where one of the counselors would recite the entire poem from memory around a campfire at least twice. One of the best memories I have. Adventurelore baby!!!
I liked this video. I do prefer more cabin content but once in a while, if this is something YOU enjoy doing, then do it! 😊 it is your channel after all. Take care! 😊❤️
Oh my gosh!!!! Fabulous job Mick 🤩 You have got the perfect voice for this type of video! So totally amazing. Great story and the fact you kept the camera on the fire just added to the eeriness of the story. I'd say a 10 out of 10. Absolutely would love to hear more of these! Happy Halloween! ❤🌳🥧🎃
My father use to read the cremation of Sam Mcgee. I have Robert Service's books my Dad read from. Dad was a huge man with a deep voice. Lost him long ago but I still hear and see him reading to us as I have with my children. Although, as the runt of the family, not with the same effect.
I LOVE IT! I memorized The Cremation of Sam McGee in Junior High for my first drama class! I couldn't believe how much of it I was able to say WITH you without even thinking. So very cool. Saving this one!
Brought back a long forgotten memory for me. My Uncle John, a World War II vet, occasionally mentioned the Cremation of Sam McGee, though I don't think I ever had the opportunity to read it. He died in 1991. This poem was just the type of thing that would have appealed to his sense of humor. Best Wishes and Thanks for the smile I will wear for the rest of the night.
I first heard this poem from a bunk bed in the Chena River rec cabin out on Chena Hot Springs Road. I never forgot it from the first time I heard it. Robert Service really understood the mindset of the people that live up here. If you ever do another, read The Spell of the Yukon. That one's my favorite.
Well done Mick ! Your voice is made for narration ! I’ve loved this poem since a favourite teacher read it to our class. Can we hope for Call of the Wild , or White Fang ? Cozy cabin vibes to you Mick. Stay warm.
I love Robert Service, this one is brilliant and another favourite is The Ballard of Blasphemous Bill 😊 would love to hear more tales, you have an amazing voice and delivery. Super cool to have this near Halloween too!

Rare indeed
@@DustyBottomBoysAK maybe we'll do something like that
So funny that I was introduced to your channel by your sons 😂 for most it’s the other way around
As a father here in Fairbanks I hope my son is as brave and talented as yours great job Sr
I’ve said it before “you have a voice that needs to be heard “. Telling stories, narrating, commenting, news broadcasting,…❤
AMEN
He truly does, he reminds me of a friend who was on radio years ago.
He should do Audiobooks
What a sweet surprise! Watching the cabin vids is satisfying but little gems like this thrown in are welcomed as well. Thanks! 🙂
Your delivery was outstanding, as well as the choice of background music and sound effects. Well done! 👍
Any day you wish to provide a literary respite, you will have an interested audience. Thank you, Mick. ❤

Agree 💯 % especially camera placement.
I had my eyes closed most of the time but the crackling of the fire and the howling of the wolves... magnifico!
Pretty sure I heard footsteps in the snow too, such a journey. ❤️

Enjoyed that very much! Awesome poem, awesome delivery of it and I'd fight you for that stove and fire! For I am like Sam McGee I HATE THE COLD!

Great 🎉 I usually dislike poetry. But I think the reader made a big difference 😊. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦
I really loved hearing the story.

Beautifully done !!! You have a very good speaking voice.
Great story for Halloween season!!
Holy cow beans! I teach "The Cremation of Sam McGee" each year to my 7th graders. They love the rhythmic pattern found in the poem and the end of the poem always has them having great discussions! Thanks for sharing Mick & thanks Dave for sharing it with your kids!
