You’ve got the most production value out of any keyboard RUclipsr
Thank you, that means a lot!
I wanted to try merging my cinema skills with my keebs and this video is the result. What do you think?
Also, any questions on my layout? I think what I have is pretty well thought out.
It's a beautifully crafted short film. The lighting associated with the slow moving camera which also matches the music is great. And you talking over a dark lit background gives the director's cut feel to it. I think a short, slow-mo typing demonstration would have been a lovely addition. Overall, well done !
@@TheCyclingGuru I like that idea, my next typing demonstration will be a bit prettier than how I normally do it!
Great film! Love the camera work and pacing. I do feel that you had too much shadow on your face clipped in the A-roll though. If you have a B-cam, that would add a nice bit of variation to the A-roll. I personally also tend to prefer having at least a single faster-paced segment to really draw in the attention of the audience. The dark theme you went for lends itself well to the cinematic vibe, but I do think that using it continuously for too long may not play well in your favour. Overall though I still feel that the short film conveys what you are trying to say clearly in a compact manner and is easily one of the best films I've seen about a keyboard. I loved short films by the likes of Peter McKinnon and I realised one of the best parts of it is its emphasis on the complete story and process. I tried my hands at it but being the one involved in the process and the one filming I just didn't have the patience to keep changing the position of the camera like the channel Little King Goods does. Looking forward to your next film!
Edit: typos
I have question about your layout , did you try to use home row moods ? I think is easier to reach and it double for both sides. I use in my moonlander and corne
@@CristopherYusuke Yes, they suck with Colemak layout. Since the most common letters are on home row, you get a lot of misfires of mods are there too.
Man, your videos are so high quality I'm surprised you only have 2.21k subs
Thank you, means a lot to me when the work I put into these videos pays off and someone notices 😊
Cinematography is great, man.
I'm of the opposing viewpoints when it comes to # of keys, but I can appreciate a craft when I see it.
Ortho-keys are 100% a must in my opinion as well. Good work.
Short but clear. Good work on the editing too!
Thank you :)
Thank you for promoting ergonomic keyboards to the masses
One day the entire world will be converted. That is the goal :)
@@joe_scotto most of the readily available keyboards such as corne and zsa are very expensive. I wish there were readily available split keyboards for sub $50
Bro is built differentl
Awesome content!!! Can’t wait to see your channel grow big
Love this. Found your channel a few days ago and this is a very well shot and well done explainer video.
Might have to send this to people who ask about my keyboards. Lol
Thank you! The goal for the video was to be as simple/clear as possible to explain how these types of boards work.
dude, saw your post on reddit, this is really cool stuff, Im about to order all the things I need from aliexpress and attempt build a scotto fly, and your video quality is amazing, cant believe you only have 2k subs
Awesome! If you have any questions, we have a really great discord focusing on handwiring: discord.gg/vN6X3z8eyv
@@joe_scotto have you made a bluetooth version?
@@boldbbqdorito7275 It’s on the content ideas list. I have the controller and battery, just waiting for the right time to make it.
The pacing at the start felt a little too slow, but loving the lighting and the production value you're practicing!
Thank you :)
Another soo nice video, the handwired guy is crazy!
🙂 Yeah, I'm a bit wild.
I dig the trailer, when is the premier?
The cinemaskills are absolutly stunning!
Colemak for me have always been an issue because I'm swedish, and well, no real standard exists for it as of yet.
The slow pacing is nice but in the end it feels like this could be the intro to something bigger and more detailed.
I'll likely make something more dedicated for us in the hobby, I want to talk about how I have the keys working with code. This video was more of an answer for when people ask "How does it work" or "Where are the numbers". A simple, short digestible video.
I've been daily driving tiny keyboards and my own version of colemak that adds the ç key for typing in Portuguese, it's amazing. Every keyboard enthusiast should give tiny ortholinear keyboards a proper try, not just using it for 30 seconds and saying it's not for them. It takes time to adjust but once you do you'll realize that the standard keyboard is horrible.
I’ve had people say to me before even attempting to try one “I could never do that”. Took me all of a day to switch from 60% to my first split 50% lol
Can you make a video guide on making keyboard via/vial compatible?
Just like Shrek, keyboards ought to have layers.
Great job on the video Joe.
Tried out the Planck EZ from ZSA for my on-the-go keyboard, but I missed the 5th row for the numbers. Just built the Preonic from a kit from Drop, so we'll see how that goes. The handwiring looks fun though! That could be one of my next projects.
Otherwise my main daily drivers are the Kinesis Advantage 2 and the Moonlander from ZSA. Love 'em both.
Thank you! You should for sure give handwiring a go, it is incredibly rewarding :)
absolute beast
Solid!
Top KEK!
Love cool videos like this. Innovation always comes from the ppl. Free the patents!!
Can’t wait until the ultimate input device is created!!!
wow video, better than 90% of new movies!
I use a split 60% ortho and it's nice but there's no way I could live without a dedicated number row. how do you deal games that use number keys for switching weapons?
I use a G502 with the buttons bound 1-8. I can then just rebind my games to what I want and it's not really an issue for me since I use Colemak and always have to rebind anyway. I don't game that much though so my boards are mainly setup for comfort and productivity.
The cool thing about small layouts, like 34 key layouts, is that everyone will have wildly different layouts, there wont be many similarities.
@@doc8125 🤣 happens all the time.
I’m far from you levelwise currently on my third corne people look at me puzzled with mixed feelings
I approve your synthesis on this passion which saved my job from a wrist issue
Looking forward on your design very much
However how much of a disappointment I felt when I realized your a clicker lover
From a tactile fan
I really like the pace of your videos.
Did you made transition at 1:05 digitally or taped board to table and rearranged keycaps?
And i also feel like a visual bit of camera gliding over keeb at 1:11 feeling too fast compared to other parts
I'm ready to listen you narrating a 3 hour lecture on biology of mammals
The transition at 1:05 was just two takes without moving the board then a fade between the two after aligning with opacity. The one at 1:11 was the best I could get, I wanted it to be slower but getting everything the way I wanted was hard so I just settled.
@@joe_scotto oh, thats nice. Looking forward to see more of your editing skills.
In the keyboard enjoyer tier list: this is S-tier. giga chad inventor-andy.
If it were anymore optimized there wouldn't even be a keyboard left over q(≧▽≦q) blows my mind that you don't even have legends on the keys - i don't think i'll ever get to that point; my WPM gets cut in half as soon as i start screen sharing in a zoom meeting as it is.
But that's exactly why i love this superior level of the hobby - any weird as hell idea you come up with you can print, solder, and code it into existence: market-appeal be damned.
And when you show it to other's who've only gone the assemble-it-yourself route you can feel complimented by all the:
(っ °Д °;)っ "what the fuck? is that a slider?? how do i buy?!" reacts
Truly my favorite keyboard channel; awesome as always, Scotto!
Thank you very much Bobby! I’m glad you’re enjoying the wild things I make haha
I assume you use KMK right ? Would you mind to share the source code on your layering ?
I use QMK. All the code for each board is available at: keyboards.scottokeebs.com
Curious, did you actually run into RSI issues from using QWERTY? I also went down the whole designing and soldering my own wireless splits and switching to something like colemak. But then realised the only thing over qwerty is just comfort. I actually don't mind the dancing around the keyboard either, so I switch between both regularly.
For the layout I also like using 3 finger combos for frequently used keys, so for example `jkl = esc` or `mkl = enter`. The fingers are already there so why not. Anyway, nice editing! But feels a little too serious for something so... Dull?
I wasn't really hitting any RSI issues from QWERTY but after switching I felt more comfortable. What I believe though is that if the switch does it's job, I won't have an RSI in the future.
I am using two language layouts - for chatting and emailing I use Slovak (due to special characters) and for coding English. I would like to switch to something other than qwerty, however COLEMAK doesn't work well with Slovak. What would you recommend, as I wouldn't want to have different layouts for different use cases.
I'm not too sure since the most common alt layouts I know of (Colemak and Dvorak) are optimized for english. Maybe switching to Colemak with a smart layer for special symbols would be a good middle ground, although I don't know how it works with your language. QMK also has options where when you hold keys it will enable secondary functions which might be helpful.
These are so cool! I don’t know how people train their brains on a new layout though. I don’t think I could lol
Just takes a bit of patience. One thing I’ve done is that every board I uses tries to keep the same layout so the muscle memory transfers.
I like... !
Glad you enjoyed it :)
this video is what i will reply to everyone who asks me where is the number row
Perfect! That was the goal :)
can you make a vid/keyboard about using an uno(atmega328p)
as someone who uses a 28 key layout it is an awesome way of doing things and you will notice so many things wrong with a normal keyboard
My ultimate life goal is to rid the world of these ancient layouts haha
