I thought this show was good... but it could have been great if the characters were better written. I love greek mythology but god at some points i was routing for the giants because the characters were just kinda unlikeable and the ones i did like they killed.
This is absolutely my jam.
Mine as well. Hopefully Netflix fast tracks a season 2.
Is it me or isn't this the same story of immortals? Rewatch immortals to see what I mean. Like SPOILERS FOR IMMORTALS. Theseus mother's death and Zeus being the old man.... just a thought
The animators needed way more time and probably money to make this really special.
The story was predictable but still a good time.
The music was epic as hell but a little over done at times. Very few times did they get any respite to develop the characters.
Would definitely watch a second season of this show. Plenty of potential.
(Light spoilers)
Really looking forward to Seraphim's redemption arc, if they choose to go down that direction. After all, he wasn't really evil but only possessed/influenced by it.
@monica Aboites It was all pretty rushed ultimately.
Well you said it all. Goddamn i hate it when a show goes almost there but then just fucks up at the last, most important moment. I'm mostly talking about the incredibly laggy animation. The opportunities were all there for this show to be on par with the best but no, because of whatever (rush??) they fucked it up.
Hey, thanks for pointing me to this show James - I enjoyed it a great deal. And btw awesome music! Reminded me of all kinds of good stuff including Poledouris’s Conan score.
As a greek mythology nerd, i rate the show 10/10
Totally agree. It’s everything I want in a Greek mythology retelling.
Don't you guys think the writing is horrible? I do. The character motivations are inconsistent and unconvincing. The plot doesn't have any payoff.
wise choice brother
I disagree. Zeus is pussy wiped and begging for forgiveness. He is the #1 narcissist. Please.
@@waitup-5198It started out really, really good for me, then about 7 episodes in it kinda just devolved into senseless gore porn, and I lost interest in the story. It's basically just a show to watch if you wanna see fictional characters get decapitated and disemboweled, really. Not much else to the show tbh.
Clash of the Titans enthralled me too as a little lad. My school put it on as a Christmas treat not long after release using the school projector. I've loved the film ever since.
So much damn fun. The score, the Harryhausen effects, always puts a smile on my face.
I dig your toys, JF.
Really felt like Blood of Zeus was rushed an extent to cash in on the success of Castlevania. A little more refinement, and this could've been just as entertaining as its hallmark predecessor. Now it's "merely" good.
i love how he said that he is a Greek mythology nerd but calls Perseus a son of Zeus when hes a son of Poseidon
you must be talking about rick riordan’s percy jackson. yes he’s the son of poseidon but his namesake, (the original perseus) actually is the son of zeus. the difference in fathers is even pointed out in one of the books. maybe it’s you who isn’t as big a nerd as you thought if you don’t even know any of the original mythology. greek myths weren’t created for rick’s middle grade series, amazing though they were.
As a fan of Greek Mythology, this is the best Greek Mythology show I've ever seen! 10/10!
You should get out more.
There were elements of Oedipus Rex, plus Arthur vs. Mordred in the Heron and Seraphim plot. I enjoyed it.
You didn't said anything about the star wars references, and there are too many.
At first, I just thought it was some coincidences, but than, they were saying the same memorable things in the same situations like "they arrived right before you did, I'm sorry", or "he had a vision of his friends and says: Alexis and the others... the fields of death... they need my help, will they die? ; the future is in constant motion, outcome is always in flux (Yoda says: Always in motion the future is) ; If I don't go, they'll die."
Which came first Star Wars or 3000 year old mythology or do writers just make these stupid mistakes across ages?
Anyone notice the plot holes in episode 1? Zeus made a pact with the Giants then led a final attack to end them? And Heron decides he wants to join the army after he got beat up? Shouldn’t he want to stay home and protect his mom?
I can highly recommend Stephen Fry's re-tellings of the classic Greek myths in his books Mythos and Heroes. Perfect way for young and old to dive into this great universe of stories; fun for kids to discover them and great for older readers to get a new take on them. Fry has also recorded fantastically entertaining audio versions for each book, available on audible.com
Will be checking this out for sure thanks!
You will have no trouble at all ripping right through it.
Finally binged it, thought it was pretty good.
The one thing that frustrated me was Heron never got to use that sword. Oh and that they made Apollo seem so weak against Ares.
The final battle on mount Olympus was pretty epic.
Love the shirt James. I still recall hooting and hollering with joy in the theatre with my mates while watching The Return of the Living Dead... good memories and Trash doing her thing (sigh). Almost too much for a bunch of rowdy youths.
However, that’s not why I’m here. I’m looking forward to this latest Netflix drop and as always I appreciate your perspective.
Cheers!
The first episode is literally the first act of Immortals. Still a good show.
What is your fav animated series on Netflix??
Do you think there is a chance we will get to see Medusa in the next season
Man, you should see Primal and Castlevania. They are both fantastic.
Totally agree about the up and down quality regarding the animation. Powerhouse is a good studio but they can be very inconsistent with the animation. It also didn't help that they probably had Japanese key animators like they did with Castlevania. Those guys really raised the bar when they stepped in. And anytime an action scene ended it was very apparent that the Western team was taking the wheel again. All in all I loved this show. The trailers and promotional art didn't do it any justice. But I eventually got around to seeing it and enjoying it.
The main(and as far as I know only) animation studios Powerhouse worked with for both Castlevania and Blood of Zeus were Korean... with pretty much all Korean animators. I don't know where you got the Japanese part from other than the fact that they were done in an anime style. The "drop in quality" outside of fight scenes was more than likely mostly due to budgetary constraints. Basically they decided to use up most of their budget on the action scenes which leaves a lot less time and money for everything else. This was arguably a good move since those action scenes were the most memorable parts of the series.
Here we go again if it ain't Japanese it ain't good or of good quality
I agree with a lot of criticism of this show but it's only season 1. We will most likely see more character developments if we get more seasons. The best part of this show, in my opinion, is the presence of diversity without the usual Netflix Wokeness. Nearly all the characters had to go through some sort of downfall or tragedy before growing to their full potential and even then no single character was overpowered.
Theme of this is Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! It's the consequences of Zeus repeatedly cheating on Hera and she's had enough and everyone gets caught in the middle.
Powerhouse Animation really seems to have a pattern here. Castlevania season, original show, Castlevania season, original show. It works out here though.
Yeah it’s a total powerhouse
I wonder if creatures such as the Gorgons or the Hydra will be in season 2?
Great review!:)
Looking forward to watch this. Really liked the Castlevania animated series on Netflix.
James, I know this kind of show is probably not in your scope usually, but since it is also (like this one) trending in the Netflix Top Ten right now, any chance you might do a review of The Queen's Gambit, just finished it and it is really very good. (Ok, I admit, I also was a chess nerd as a child, but you can enjoy it even without being a chess player).
I like this series more than Castlevania, even though i absolutely love that series. I just have a deeper interest for Greek Religion than Castlevania, havent really played the Castlevania games either.
Interesting -- but why is the character design exactly the same as Castevania and the DC Animated Universe? They could have varied from the prevailing style of the day.
its made by the same studio as Castlevania so Im guessing they want a easily identifiable style kind of like how you could tell a handdrawn disney film based on the style of the animation
@@joshroberts1936 If that's a house style, then it makes sense.
What did you think about the TROY series? I loved it! I hope they do the Oddessy
Looks fantastic. Gonna be watching this tonight. Closest thing to God of War anime we will get. Have you seen anything for the new game Immortals Fenyx Rising? It looks beautiful, fun, and I love the way they balance true Mythology and a sanitized version for younger players. There are a lot of references. A lot. And I've only seen a bit of game play.
It's good, it is indeed pretty good. The writers previous movie "Immortals" actually rather underrated imo just because people are hating the more arthouse theatrical approaches to the art design. Season 2 likely gonna happen with all the positive receptions. Heron is most likely Zeus's latest son, as pretty much being confirmed by the show he already has 7 other mistresses, including Electra.
The villain was well written, very tragic and sympathetic. He was a cross between vegeta and Darth Vader
This sounds like something I would love; have been a fan of great animation all my life, its story telling potential is sadly underappreciated..
The main character is never my favorite in any show, lol. Seraphin is my favorite character.
How come you're not reacting to this season of fargo?
You should check out the video game Hades. Got some nice Greek mythology going on while being a blast to play.
i agree with this a lot but I think when he went to go kill his uncle it shouldve had a little more action because I thought the build up was good. also the facial expressions seemed very bland. alexia was also under used and Hera was probably one of my favorite characters. castlevania was 10/10 in my opinion comparing the two seemed fair because I give BoZ a solid 7.7/10 i think that if the flow was better towards the middle of the show it'd be 10/10
I feel like it would be ten times more amazing if Hercules and Perseus joined the anime.
finally a greek mythology show that shows more then just zeus & poseidon, like for instance we see here: hera, ares, titans and more
bloody cartoony fun
That final episode was just glorious.
Great review but the Giant War was not created for the show
I felt the show are pulling more toward Seraphim and less to Heron (which I don’t mind) also the last few scenes in the final episode could’ve been better yet I liked this season.
he is the only son of zeus to get the power of lightning
I want to like this show. It has some really good aspects. The animation is pretty good and the music is good. The story is just kind of weak. There's really nothing to it. The real killer for me is the character designs and development...They're terrible! The main protagonist has no personality at all. I can care less what happens to him. Pretty much can be said for all the characters. They have no real personality. Hera is a terrible villain. Just over emotional and pointless. She should go on Jerry Springer. As for Zesus...the king of the gods and heavens is nothing more than a clueless 20 year old with power. At the end there's just nothing really here. It's only the 1st season and I'm pretty bored. Now the castlevania anime is a great example of a good Netflix original series.
when Zeus started smiting the ship i lost my shit
Im still baffled by the RT score and the high praise given to this series. The animation is mediocre and the dialogue and voice acting is at the level of the Star Wars prequels. I love Greek mythology but the story borrows heavily from live action films of the past. Only the names have been changed. People must be starved for entertainment b/c in a pre-COVID world, this would get the rating it deserves. 👎
It’s worth watching for the fight scenes and art style, but the story isn’t that impressive. It’s a basic beginning middle end with lackluster characters and a rushed plot. This show doesn’t hold a candle to Castlevania. Overall I’d give it a 5/10
I think you are being to harsh, I would at least give it a 7
yes, agree.
Yup. It's pretty fuckin boring.
Better than Clash and Wrath of the Titans
I didn't really like this show, I found it to be really poorly written and generic
quick question - do you read the original Greek myths???
@@elisabethacronqvist7859 I am a Greek myself and I am really familiar with Greek mythology
Amazing show, it’s annoying how much they changed for literally no reason, and I mean literally, a lot of it was pointless and didn’t affect the story, like the fact it was Cronus’ blood and not Uranus’ blood, or how it fell in the sea and not the earth. BUT it didn’t take away from the quality of the show and it was great and I really hope it gets a season 2.
Immortals was shite, so that explains why the trailer looks so dumb. (Also a Greek Myth buff here, and I can't stand adaptations that reduce the material to comic book superhero fare)
The show seems good for kids, maybe, but boring and predictable if you’ve seen that stuff done better elsewhere
Woke, trashy take on Greek mythos. Don't get your hopes up. Pass on this one.
Whats woke here?
No realy what ?the amazonian being tough ? Well she is amazonian
What the black guy ? Hes meh
Hera well she is Hera a god second to Zeus himself like wtf is woke here
Barely a black charector and greek mythos have tons powerfull women but they didnt render the women fenomenal in this situaition like come on man i am anti woke just like the next guy but here realy wasnt
yeah how tf is this woke lol? i think you're reaching a tad bit here. i found it mediocre but seriously where did you get woke from lmao
@@jennied9783 I get that it's not the actual mythos or even close to it. But each character is depicted in the most negative or positive way possible through a woke lenses. If you can't see that you don't know much about the original myths or you don't understand what a world outside of modern woke culture looks like.
@@LaughterIsDeadly what 'woke lenses'? elaborate. the story may have been twisted from original mythology to fit their own interpretation, but i didn't see anything that could be regarded as "woke" besides the scene with apollo and his lovers, and even that was for a brief second.
The villain was well written, very tragic and sympathetic. He was a cross between vegeta and Darth Vader
