I love your guitar playing. Your teaching is very good and helpful.. however... because of me having to fix my hum problems.. please... there are options. That hum in your video's doesn't have to be there.
I am baffled that this channel does not have hundreds of thousands of subs or more. Wake up people! These videos are amongst the best lesson vids available. They have really impacted my playing lately, thanks!
Thanks so much for your RUclips channel! At the University of North Texas, all instruction was focused on jazz and classical for your instrument, with mine being the guitar (1978-1982). We had to figure out all the other styles on our own. It wasn’t like the Berklee College of Music which taught all contemporary styles, but you could earn a Bachelor of Music at UNT, then get a music teaching credential, which I got. I went on to teach high school band and orchestra. One of the top ten favorite funk/jazz albums for jazz students in the 80’s was by the Brecker Brothers - Heavy Metal Be-bop. The chart Some Skunk Funk was the most insanely cool tune that we all tried to learn. Earth, Wind and Fire and Tower of Power were big, especially for horn players, bands where I picked up a few funk licks. All Alto Sax players tried to emulate David Sanborn, who pretty much standardized the way to play funk on that instrument. A long ramble, but I just want to say to your viewers, as someone who has studied with some of the best guitar players, you can get high quality instruction right here. You must have had some very good teachers. It all sounds right. Thank you.
I really appreciate your comments, especially since you know music and are a teacher yourself. I'm actually self taught for the most part, a couple lessons along the way but mostly just been gigging forever. Anyways, thanks for watching and I'll try to keep the good stuff coming.
Pat Martino used lick #5 when I saw him. He stayed on it to build tension over a whole chorus or two and then moved on in the next chorus. It got a strong reaction from the audience, in spite of it being about the easiest thing he played.
hey rick.. nice stuff as usual..I'm a guitar teacher, so I think I'm little more aware of how hard you work..to make these lessons ..I hope your making good money at this , you certainly deserve it..thanks
Thanks man, I appreciate that. The ad revenue on youtube vids pay next to nothing unless you are getting a lot of views...it works out to about $1.50 for 1000 views. But it does drive some traffic to my website and provide a steady stream of students and some ebook sales. So I'm making a modest living off of it. I usually gig alot here in Las Vegas too but with current situation all gigs have been cancelled. So I'm pretty fortunate in that I can keep paying the bills with the online teaching cause all my fellow musicians here in town are really screwed, that sucks.
I’m literally just staring jazz funk guitar, I didn’t know where to start, I have to say this video is a huge help for me to start somewhere ! Thanks a lot !
You are probably the best guitar teach on RUclips for R&B and Soul music. But when you do the double stops and such I wish you show the notes and hand positions that you play. I really love how you slow the licks down though.
Thanks James, it takes time and effort to do those but if it helps people learn I'm cool with it, btw you can download the tabs at www.tastyguitar.com/free-lessons
Great stuff. I was trying to read the notation and I was spinning my wheels a little bit because the notes were not adding up. On examples #1 and #2 the note on the second beat should be a DOTTED EIGHTH note paired with a sixteenth note. Super articulate phrasing here. This is a really good exercise for picking and fretting.
you're correct that it is not correct, but it should be a 16th rest on right on beat 2, then an 8th followed by a 16th, I also would have done beat 1 differently, this was one of my first videos years ago and was a guitar pro newbie lol
@@TastyGuitarcom And I just bought your filthy funk and blues licks bundle based off the promo video. There's nothing more convincing motivator than to gaze introspectively and realise ones un-funkiness. But....the fact it was cheaper than the bathtub turd fishing kit is what clinched the deal. 😁😁😁
VERY NICE PLAYING! THANKS! Rare to hear this style these days. Difficult to emulate. Maybe a slower version as well would be easier? And some backing right here, or one found for free on RUclips...
Huge fan of your channel! Grant is such an overlooked player in many ways- it's great to see someone sharing and teaching the funky goodness of his playing.
Your guitar sounds great,I've never come across this before but I have now, these ideas of yours have elevated my blues licks in a day. Thanks for a great lesson I can see by the comments it's been here for a while but I'm glad I'm on board now
I just happened to find your site and I'm truly amazed. So many useful things to learn and also use to build chops. Thank you so much for sharing your gift. may it return to you 1000 fold. PS...considering some skype time....I hope you don't charge by the question.
I love this one too! its really great to use if you combine it with other licks and in other styles. I've been rocking this over a blues track and it sounds great in that context too to add some excitement and tension
excellent, efficient and tasteful licks in an important style ...like many of your lessons...please keep it up...do you have a website where there is more of this stuff?

By far the best guitar videos are the ones with tabs in it
D@TRIO I agree, thanks for watching

haha sometimes the easiest stuff IS what gets the audience reaction
Amazing! So simple but I've always said that tone is in the hands and you are proving it. This is a phrasing lesson.
Honestly speaking you're one of the best guitarist. I've had so many but you're unique and very talented Sir.
You are too kind, thank you

Say hi to Grant Green for me, man. Because you’re obviously in close touch with him. This stuff is so giant, Rick. Keep up the good work.
