Just to make it a little more potentially confusing. We have a 53 member organisation called the 'Commonwealth of Nations' and we have our own little Olympic-style sporting event "The Commonwealth Games" (where the UK competes as the 4 separate countries) - Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Swaziland, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Kingdom, United Republic of Tanzania, Vanuatu & Zambia.

The thing with Britain was they had the strongest Navy in the world for literally centuries. In those times that was so important because if you had the most muscle in the oceans then you control ALL the trade routes and therefore all the power. This combined with the sheer number of ships and seafaring men they had (being an island nation) meant they could colonize many far reaching places without worrying about their military being stretched too thin. They were basically vikings but a bit more technologically advanced and more civilized. Just a bit though lol.

The reason so few conquered so many in short (and very simplified) was innovation and industrialisation. It is said that 40-50% of all inventions have had their roots in the now UK. This gave the UK vast competitive advantage. The world then caught up and today any such empire would be impossible (and undesirable) as information transfer happens so fast today that competitive advantage can no longer yield so much power.

India getting independence was absolutely a violent affair, thousands of freedom fighters died as well as millions of civilians, not to mention that Britain basically enforced the partition of India into India and Pakistan (which would also later be split into Pakistan and Bangladesh) which caused even more deaths and the displacement of millions. Look into historical figures such as Chandra Shekhar Azad, Baghat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose who led more violent protests against the British. The lives of these freedom fighters are not well-known outside of India because of Brits trying to act like they were so kind as to give India independence after we kindly asked, the same way America does not teach anywhere near as much about Malcolm X as it does Martin Luther King Jr, because it doesn't fit their narrative and they want to keep the oppressed classes docile.

@TheBritishBulldog I'm British by nationality, I went through the UK education system, and quite frankly the scale of the two cannot be compared. The fact of the matter is that the relatively few and isolated acts of violence against British civilians (as compared to the millions of Indian civilians killed by the Brits) simply would not have happened had the British never colonised India in the first place. It was a response, the British were the agitators. You stake claim over land that isn't yours and torture the people it actually belongs to, you have to expect consequences.

The main reason us (The UK) could create our British empire is because we had the first Industrial revolution. While other countries were still working on farms everywhere, we were making factories and industry so we were by far more advanced than any other country at the time.
The size of our empire is the reason we lost places like America. We were at war with France, Spain and the Dutch at the time America was fighting for independence. We also had to have armies all over the world to defend those countries. So literally only a small percentage of the British army fought in the American war of independence, the other 98% of the army was spread across the world and it just wasn’t worth sending more resources there basically

Most of the Commonwealth likes being in the Commonwealth. While there is a lot of violence in the Middle East, the world is otherwise quite peaceful these days. In other words, no foreign power is going to try to conquer any part of the Commonwealth, and even if they tried, the USA would get involved. End of invasion.

Not just currency. I served 20 years in the Royal Canadian Navy on H.M.C.S CALGARY, H.M.C.S. VANCOUVER and H.M.C.S. VICTORIA. Her Majesty's Canadian Ship/Submarine.
To serve in the Canadian Armed Forces we have to take an oath and pledge allegiance to the Queen. The administration of the military budget such as the pay for soldiers and officers is done through the Queen's Regulation and Orders which are promulgated by the Ministers of Defence and of Treasure. A commissioned officer recieves commission from the Queen. A regiment's/ship's/submarine's commission, name, colours and armories must be approved by the Queen. Although the Canadian Forces recieves their orders from the government, through it's Minister of National Defense and the Defence Chief of Staff, the Commander in Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces is the Governor General of Canada who represents the Queen in Canada and is appointed by the Queen under the recommandation of the government through the Queen's Privy Concil for Canada. Also if a minority federal government in Canada wish to dissolve, in order to have another election and become a majority government, the Prime Minister has to request the permission to the Governor General. For a provincial government the request is presented to the Lieutenant-Government of the province which represent the Governor General in that province. Those requests have been denied a few times in the last few decades and then the government has to manage and govern as a minority government for the rest of the four year term. In the other way Canada as a say in decisions regarding the Crown. For example now Charles is the next in line for the throne although his sister Anne is older that's because a male heir had precedence over a female heir at the time of their birth. But this as been changed recently. Although it changes nothing for the heirs born prior to the change, for heirs born after the change the oldest heir will be next in line no matter their gender. This kind of changes have to be approved by each country of the commonwealth.
Finally in Canada Elisabeth II of Windsor is not recognised as the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great-Britain and Northern Ireland but as the Queen of Canada just like in the Isle of Mann she's recognised as the Queen and Lord of Mann and in the Anglo-Norman Islands of Jersey and Guernesey she's recognised as the Queen and Lord of Jersey and Guernesey and Duke of Normandy.
By the way the Brexit should be called the UKexit since it does include Northern Ireland.😊

The crown still gets its right not by the people but by God but you know ... people's opinion counts too and not helping the people is "anti-Christian" so both. The British Monarch is not appointed he is anointed, not by a minister but by a archbishop.
My personal opinion as a Christian is that if everything is done by the hand of God, the crown has divine rights as well as anything else but with more prestige.

Badically this means Canada is a monarchy in a personal union with the UK, along with Australia, New Zealand and many other former colonies.
Thus the highest political authority in these countries are Prime ministers instead of Presidents.
Obviously there are republics with prime ministers too, mostly in Europe, but these are usually countries in europe where the president has a ceremonial role just like the Brittish queen. This is usually due to these countries being former monarchies where they just sort of replaced their ceremonial monarch with a ceremonial president. Either that or it’s a country like germany where they don’t want to centralise power too much due to a history of dictatorship.

I know it might be confusing, but the Commonwealth realms, like Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. recognize the British monarch as head of state, eve thought they are independent nations, to ad another layer of confusion, the monarchies of Canada and the UK for example are seperate, so the Queen holds the tittle of Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain And Northern Ireland, but also holds the tittle of the Queen of Canada, Queen of Australia etc. however there is not tittle of, for example, Queen of Bermuda, since Bermuda is a n overseas territory of the United Kingdom, and therefore, the British Crown reigns over Bermuda, rather then there being a separate Crown of Bermuda. But, it should be kept in mind that while laws are passed in the Queens name, everyone swears allegiance to her, and she is commander in chief, and the highest person on the land in her countries, and in a legal way the crown is important (for example in court, instead of being, the state against someone, it is the Crown against someone etc.) the Queens power is still only theoretical today, as it has become constitutional tradition that the Queen only acts based on the Prime ministers, and the other ministers advice, so they in reality have the power...

Margaret Thatcher once said it is untrue to think that the weekly meeting with the queen is just ceremonial, on the contrary.
Both the prime minister and the Monarch has their hands on the rudder.
People generally forgot that the prime Minister has the legislative powers and the Monarch has the executive power.

The reason why they were able to expand is due to two things, geography and industrialization. The industrial revolution began in England, and being near rivers and fresh water. The water allows food, which allows more economic growth, and a greater ability to explore.

Mark 10:14. "Jerusalem", translates into, "Kingdom of Heaven". The three Abrahamic Faiths, fought over the city during the various Holy Crusade Wars, because the believed if they installed their own king or queen on the throne of that kingdom city, then that meant they had the "direct line to God", as it were, and that He approved of their faith the most, because the winner was in charge, at least for awhile. That's the gist I got from the movie, "Kingdom of Heaven". Whereas the movie, "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves", made it seem like the, English and other Europeans, just wanted to force their religion on the rest of the World, as if they were all, Spanish Catholic Conquistadors! 🤔

Mostly right. More info: technically, Queen Elizabeth II is our head of state, but in practice her duties are delegated to the Governor General (currently Julie Payette), who is appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister (currently Justin Trudeau). It's essentially all ceremonial, and the real power rests entirely with Parliament, with the Prime Minister as both the head of government and de facto head of state (though we're not supposed to admit that out loud).

Actually - Royalty hasn't always been passed down from father to son- in the UK we have had numerous kings from different families - modern day royalty started in 1066 when William the Conqueror ( French Norman ) sailed to England and defeated King Harold (Anglo-Saxon) to become King of England - it gets complicated after this from Plantagenet to Tudor and even the Dutch House of Orange and up to the present day when Queen Elizabeth the Second can trace her family back to Germany ( Saxe Coberg Gotha ) .

Trade, infrastructure, education, law, religion, and to bring this to a non industrial country did actually help the vast amount of said countries, but as with washing, you need to iron out the creases so the trade would be beneficial to both countries. And if there's any border /country disputes we would send soldiers/navy on the railway system, which we have probably have built, (Indian/African /Australian). The independence of said countries, mainly after the ww2, was to form the commonwealth, but with a much less trade deals, hence the second "empire", this is and still is down to financial /money /loot, the city of London in London, is a separate entity, with its own police, laws, hence the set up of off shore trusts across the globe , overseas territories, this is where bankers etc, basically the rich people, put their money, so they don't have to pay tax to their sovereign/home country, basically a tax dodge, and its fcuking massive enterprise, trillions if not more are dealt with daily, in the financial mile, (city of London ), I think we along with USA, Russia are the three richest countries around, India's not far behind, not bad for a little island eh lads n lasses , all the best of regards cuzs.

Ireland IS a country - the Rep. Of Ireland is the full name. N.I. is also not really a country. Rather it is a quasi independent state within Ireland and ruled from the British govt but with its own certain amount of self autonomy. Politically, it is the UK. Culturally, it is Ireland. I would say it has a similar semi independent status as the Isle of Mann - but the Isle of Mann has ALWAYS been independent and its parliament is much older than the British or even possibly the oldest in the world. Isle of Mann has the remmants of its own Celtic language, Manx. More related to Irish Celtic, than Welsh or Cornish Celtic

There might nit be a Great Britain in a few years. Scotland is pushing for independence and recently voted in a government commited to making Scotland an independent nation. We may even ditch the monarchy once independence is gained. While technically the UK is a theocracy inpractice religion doesn't play a role in politics. In fact here in Scotland only 7% of the population attend church or take part in any religious activity.

In Canada we recognize the queen as our head of state even though she has no real power whatsoever. The prime minister is our head of government and leads our nation but if he wants to sign a bill into law he would need the royal consent of the crown which has a representative called the Governor General. They don’t really do anything but sign the bills into law and call for an election but I believe that they do have the power to veto the bill and not sign it even if it passes in the House of Commons if they wanted to.

Our goverment has the power to destroy the monochy, the monochy knows this, so they'll never disobey our goverment, unless they want to no longer exist.

All these countries are free to drop us whenever, we're definitly not really in control of them, if they don't want to be connetected to us any more in whatever way, all they need to do is have a vote, we defininitly are not powerful enough to forcfully hold on to any connections if they don't want it to be that way. For example falkland island had a vote and voted to remain british, if they had voted other wise, sure we wouldn't be happy about it but we wouldn't try and stop them from doing it once they voted.

    To keep it simple ...
Britain is an island not a country
The island of Britain contains three countries : England, Wales and Scotland
Then, if you add Northern Ireland you get The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
which is commonly abbreviated to UK
The term 'Great' in Great Britain refers to this island being the 'greatest' meaning largest of the island of the British isles
We are not self congratulating ourselves

India didn't actually fight a war for independence. Gandhi led a massive non-violent independence campaign, but stopped it during World War 2, and then there were negotiations until independence was given in 1948. The non-violent campaigns were violently attacked by the Imperial authorities, and violence arose over the proposal to split up India to create a seperate Pakistan, but there wasn't a war between India and the UK, because of Gandhi's principles and strategy. That strategy, subsequently influencing Martin Luther King, was based on Gandhi's reading of the New Testament and his feelings about Jesus Christ, under the influence of LeoTolstoy in his book _The Kingdom Of God Is Within You,_ where he argued very powerfully that Jesus' commandments to love your neighbour and turn the other cheek should mean that believers abstain from violence and military service completely, and that if they did so, all war and military oppression of the people could be ended almost overnight in Christian countries, if the churches and the people just took those commandments sufficiently seriously.

The video refers to the UK as a theocracy??? Not correct as we stopped basing our laws on religion way before the act of union in 1704 and the punishments for breaking the law were not derived from religious punishments (I.E crucifixion). We are a constitutional monarchy with a moderate emphasis on church and state, our institutions are intertwined with the church but our legal system is not based on biblical teachings.
You two did seem pretty interested in the video though and you look like you make a nice couple 👍🏼
