  • The Rhodactis genus of mushrooms corallimorphs are arguably the most diverse mushrooms in the reef aquarium hobby. They can range in size from the 1” Tonga bullseye varieties to gigantic 18” elephants ear mushrooms. In addition, they have some of the most diverse color combinations as well as textures. If you can imagine a color combination, there is probably a Rhodactis out there that fits the bill.

    So I’m a noob. And Been reefing for about six months. One of my first corals was a neon green rhodactis. I just got home from work and saw that a piece of him broke off and was about 6 inches away from it’s self. I freaked and I looked you up online and saw that that’s how they reproduce I am so happy that I’m doing it the right way. Thank you Than for your wisdom!

    I bought my first rhodactis about four months ago and it is without a doubt one of the best corals I own. It’s survived a tank nuke and has split three times already and looks like it’s on its way to splitting a fourth. When I got it, it was only a single polyp too. Awesome coral! 👍

    This was an awesome video. I've got a green rodactis mushroom with a blue mouth. It grew a bounce bubble. It has been in my tank for 3 years . It is huge. Have you ever heard of this ?

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  7 лет назад

      Some bounce mushrooms grow them naturally. If a Rhodactis is given too much light, they can form oxide radicals and form bubbles, but those are actually a sign of bad health. The first time I saw a bounce mushroom I thought it looked stupid because I associated those bubbles as unhealthy tumors.

      Tidal Gardens Inc. Thanks for the info. I must be lucky. Mine is healthy as a horse and at 8 to 9 inches in length. It's never split and has produced 25 pups.

    • @cxaxukluth5432
      @cxaxukluth5432 3 года назад +1

      @@VannatterR That’s true but really anything that is used to capture food and leads to a gastrovascular cavity is usually called ‘mouth’ in zoology.
      Flatworms have one opening too, just like corals, and that one opening is called mouth. Most cnidarians have very simple openings but corals and anemones actually possess quite complex pharynges which scientists consider analogous to flatworms pharynges.
      It certainly makes more sense to call it a mouth than to call it an anus. The first priority for such primordial animals is to have an opening for feeding. Having an anus is just a bonus for more complex animals.

    I once picked up a Superman Rhodactis rock for a steal. I got it for $75 and it had 6 heads. It did nothing, the 1 year I had it in my ULN SPS reef. I removed it and placed it in my neglected nanocube. I swear it double in size the first month.

    • @tidalgardens

      I would put them into a low flow section of coarse rubble and allow them to settle and eventually attach. After they attach to the small pieces of rubble, you can glue them to a large piece of substrate.
