I went to high school with Randy Rhoads in the San Fernando Valley(Burbank High).He was a friend of a friend of mine.In high school we had assembly's where students would entertain students with acting, playing music etc. and the sound Randy through out from his guitar was amazing and it was obvious in high school he was headed for big time fame.I saw him twice play with Quiet Riot in Burbank in 1978-79.He was a hellofa guitarist and a down to earth nice person.

That's is cool, thanks for sharing. I wish I had been able to see him with Ozzy back in the day. I was capable, but I got caught up in the Satanic panic at the time, and blew it! I didn't really discover him till the year after his passing, one of my cousins played "Dee" for me, and a few others, I was hooked. He quickly became my favorite guitarist, and still is. RIP Randy, you are missed. 😢🙏
I didn't see him that early and I didn't know him, which would of been cool, I did see him on the blizzard tour in LA and I did see the Diary tour on 12/31/1981 at the LBA (Long Beach Arena in California) 6th row center stage & I'm so glad I did because he died March 19th 1982, 3 1/2 months later, I still have an unused ticket from that show, I still say he was the best...& would of gone on to do great things RIP Randy

And Randy gave private guitar lessons there for years including when he was in Quiet Riot and up until an hr before he auditioned for Ozzy, which he only did at his mom's insistence. His mom did teach him some piano to help teach him to read sheet music and enhance his understanding of music theory.

Diary of a Madman was an absolute masterpiece. Such a shame we never got the chance to see what else he would have come up with through his otherwise continued evolution.
Sadly for metal fans, Randy had already announced to Ozzy that he was leaving the metal scene and was going off to study classical guitar and even pursue a degree in it. That endeavor would have taken Randy out of heavy metal for at least a few years. He may never have returned to play heavy metal again. It seemed it was not in his heart to do so at the time of his death.

Well today there are a lot of well known "rock star" guitarists taking the time to teach right here on RUclips, and for free, mind you. However, back in the day, it's not like most rock star's families owned music stores that gave music lessons, like Randy's family did. This recording probably wouldn't exist if his mother didn't own a music store. But yeah, this recording is an absolute treasure to have been found. Here's hoping they keep finding little gems like this for decades to come.

people are to judgemental now. When I was a kid we used to buy all the old cassette bootlegs at record fairs. We would take a gamble hoping we have brought a decent quality recording. We only had digital watches and calculators back then. People now have you tube and they winge about free shit!!
I will nevcr forget when they televised SRV's funeral in Dallas. Billy Gibbons, Bonny Raite, and Stevie Wonder sang Amazing grace. There wasnt a dry eye in my house. What a loss. I still hate Clapton to this day.

In fact, One of the reasons I look up to Ozzy so much is because he's made mistakes in life but will stand up and admit it.

Some of us grew up with these records, literally. We bought then when we were ten, eleven years old. I owned both the Ozzy/Randy records on cassette initially, no lyrics inside the sleeve, no pictures, no nothing. Thanks Jet Records! Lol. Little did we know that one day youtube would have things like this, details we could have never dreamed of
GMoorefan115 Not only youtube, which affords the poor man lessons and knowledge from all kinds of great musicians, but the myriad of pc/mac programs for learning, recording etc. My first taste of metal was Blizzard of Oz cassette I got along with about 10 other "metal" cassettes from the colombia house record club ( how many of us built a mammoth lp/cassette collection from that place and BMG, lol). Anyways, Randy is the reason I picked up a guitar, still the best at his craft after all these years and only a few albums of material. I still can't play his solos, but I will never stop trying.

When I was a kid I used to practise until I fell asleep. I used to imagine RR saying “nah, try it like this..” at the time I didn’t know about his teaching life. Like so many others I was profoundly influenced by what he did. I’ve read nothing but the kindest things about him. He seemed to be all about the pure art of guitar, always learning and sharing what he learned. That’s a rare human being. Great to hear him talking here.
All these years of being a HUGE Ozzy fan, and myself being a guitarist, but I must admit, I just now realized for the first time in my life what a real masterpiece of guitar writing this song truly is. After listening to this recording, I went and listened to the studio version. I've heard this song hundreds of times over the years, but it not being one of my favorite songs from Ozzy, I never really took the time to dissect it the way I just did this time. Seriously, after listening to this brilliant little gen, go listen to the full studio recording of Diary of a Madman, and you're mind will likely be just as blown as mine, even though you've also probably heard it as many times as I have. This song alone shows that Randy was on a whole other level than anyone Ozzy had ever had the honor of playing with up until then. It was Black Sabbath that got me interested in playing the guitar in the first place, and now I've been playing for over 40 years, having played in a number of bands doing a number of Ozzy covers over the past few decades. However, just looking at this one song alone, Randy Rhoads makes ANYTHING Tony Iommi every wrote seem extremely amateurish. Which is probably why Black Sabbath is a great starting point for anyone just starting to learn the guitar, and then as you progress, you work your way UP to Randy Rhoads. 😉

Let’s be real.....this guy gave us Crazy Train with Ozzys incredible vocals.....still played on the radio, still played in sports stadiums around the world for every sport to get the crowd going......,this guy is a saint.
I am 43 years aold, and I still get goosebumps when I hear Randy - just like when I was 11 years old and heard "I Don't Know" on the radio for the first time. Even at 12 years old I thought something was fishy. The record said all songs written and recorded by ozzy Osbourne ,I knew ozzy did not play a guitar .
not only would Randys God Given Classical leads ripped threw anything in his path, he was also a wonderful person, always humble and thankful for his opportunity's never let anything go to his head, taken much to young and probly in a way that could have been avoided. but in his short life he have's inspired and changed the way we hear and feel music..
It's hard to be as humble in this day and age as well as getting respect as an entertainer. There's few great musicians who are never noticed because of that. I remember in those days more musicians delved more into feeling and creating their own style. Now its the I can play along with someone else's idea from the internet.
I'm speechless, I've said just about all I can say about Randy. He is my earthly Idol. My guitar mentor and my favorite guitarist off all time. A trained ear will reveal the brilliance of this man's composing and expression on the guitar. His loss is incalculable to the direction he would of taken us. Rest in peace Randy. As a 10 year old gal, (at the time) Randy was my reason for picking up a guitar in the late 80's/early 90's. Bless that man's soul. What that artist he was, to us budding musicians.
First off, thank the lord jesus 4 RUclips & this beautiful video! I began playing at 15 yrs & didnt last 2 long, Alcohol, Drugs, Outright laziness!!! But recently I've decided 2 get back n the game & give it my all. In the beginning i was inspired by Randy & I've felt that i let him down!! But this go round I will truly give it my all, minus drugs & alcohol. I feel better n my life as well & 2 Morrow's not promised? Perhaps the saddest loss of a talented guitar player in history. This is not to say that Dimebags murder was any less of a tragedy. It's an absolute shame when anyone is lost before their time. Randy's chord selection is just mesmerizing. R. I. P. Randy, Dime, Duane Allman, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Add to that Chuck Schuldiner (Death). He was an amazing guitarist, a great lyricist, a pioneer in the metal genre and more than that (as opposed to what death metal would suggest) a sweet caring man and animal lover.

I was doing the same last night and I had to come back for more cause I have such great memories from that time..though One that still kills me to this day..that he died about four to five months before I was gonna see him at MSG on the Diary tour. RIP Randy Rhoads

A God gifted musician and a true Natural who possessed an incredible work ethic. Very rare in any walk of life. Think of people u know who are extremely hard workers but lack natural abilities or, conversely, the naturally gifted people who never reach their potential due to sheer laziness. Randy Rhoads was simply one of the Naturally gifted musicians who found his destiny early in life then out worked his peers to get to the top. Incredible role model, Timeless qualities.

A lot of people argue with me but I think he's surpassed Eddie and his short-lived career but he was doing things that I don't even think Eddie Van Halen could come up with, Randy Rhoads was a humble soul; didn't have the eagle and chip on his shoulder like Eddie does that's just my opinion

Randy possessed some unbelievable compositional skills. Even when he just plays the fragments of Diary and explains each element of the piece to students, he exudes complete musicality.
I saw Randy play in Birmingham Alabama 13 days before he passed away in 82 couple weeks later my friend who went with me to the show. Told me he was gone so sad.

Randy (RIP) died just after the second time I saw him in Milwaukee in 1982. Randy and I are born same day 12/06 and our moms are both named Dolores. I actually met him at the riverside theater in Milwaukee for the blizzard tour. We became instant friends. Ozzy said to Randy and me you guys look like brothers, I am the tall one Randy the small one. Motörhead opened. We talked about our love for classical music, opera, Elvis and Gary Moore.....

I will nevcr forget when they televised SRV's funeral in Dallas. Billy Gibbons, Bonny Raite, and Stevie Wonder sang Amazing grace. There wasnt a dry eye in my house. What a loss. I still hate Clapton to this day.

Most of them are guitar players like myself, But I don't just look up to him because of how he could play, I look up to him because he was a good person at heart and like Bruce said up there, humility. In fact, One of the reasons I look up to Ozzy so much is because he's made mistakes in life but will stand up and admit it.

GMoorefan115 Not only youtube, which affords the poor man lessons and knowledge from all kinds of great musicians, but the myriad of pc/mac programs for learning, recording etc. My first taste of metal was Blizzard of Oz cassette I got along with about 10 other "metal" cassettes from the colombia house record club ( how many of us built a mammoth lp/cassette collection from that place and BMG, lol). Anyways, Randy is the reason I picked up a guitar, still the best at his craft after all these years and only a few albums of material. I still can't play his solos, but I will never stop trying.

When I was a kid I used to practise until I fell asleep. I used to imagine RR saying “nah, try it like this..” at the time I didn’t know about his teaching life. Like so many others I was profoundly influenced by what he did. I’ve read nothing but the kindest things about him. He seemed to be all about the pure art of guitar, always learning and sharing what he learned. That’s a rare human being. Great to hear him talking here.

All these years of being a HUGE Ozzy fan, and myself being a guitarist, but I must admit, I just now realized for the first time in my life what a real masterpiece of guitar writing this song truly is. After listening to this recording, I went and listened to the studio version. I've heard this song hundreds of times over the years, but it not being one of my favorite songs from Ozzy, I never really took the time to dissect it the way I just did this time. Seriously, after listening to this brilliant little gen, go listen to the full studio recording of Diary of a Madman, and you're mind will likely be just as blown as mine, even though you've also probably heard it as many times as I have. This song alone shows that Randy was on a whole other level than anyone Ozzy had ever had the honor of playing with up until then. It was Black Sabbath that got me interested in playing the guitar in the first place, and now I've been playing for over 40 years, having played in a number of bands doing a number of Ozzy covers over the past few decades. However, just looking at this one song alone, Randy Rhoads makes ANYTHING Tony Iommi every wrote seem extremely amateurish. Which is probably why Black Sabbath is a great starting point for anyone just starting to learn the guitar, and then as you progress, you work your way UP to Randy Rhoads. 😉

Wow what a damn loss! This guy had sooooo many years left... the music he would have wrote this whole time had he lived, just the biggest shame. It almost makes me mad thinking of all of the music we'll never get to hear and how he would have progressed through out the decades.

I am 43 years aold, and I still get goosebumps when I hear Randy - just like when I was 11 years old and heard "I Don't Know" on the radio for the first time. Much like Led Zeppelin as a Band, no Rock Guitarist could EVER come close to having the whole package as Randy does. God Bless you my friend. RIP. -Dave
I'm 58 and same! I would fall on my guitar like a sword and stand by the fact he had the single best tone and skill of any guitar player in history. Tony iomi may be first as an argument. Ironically I love tons of music and Ozzy surrounded himself with class act musicians

not only would Randys God Given Classical leads ripped threw anything in his path, he was also a wonderful person, always humble and thankful for his opportunity's never let anything go to his head, taken much to young and probly in a way that could have been avoided. but in his short life he have's inspired and changed the way we hear and feel music..
It's hard to be as humble in this day and age as well as getting respect as an entertainer. There's few great musicians who are never noticed because of that.
I remember in those days more musicians delved more into feeling and creating their own style. Now its the I can play along with someone else's idea from the internet.

A trained ear will reveal the brilliance of this man's composing and expression on the guitar. His loss is incalculable to the direction he would of taken us.

Perhaps the saddest loss of a talented guitar player in history. This is not to say that Dimebags murder was any less of a tragedy. It's an absolute shame when anyone is lost before their time. Randy's chord selection is just mesmerizing. R. I. P. Randy, Dime, Duane Allman, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Add to that Chuck Schuldiner (Death). He was an amazing guitarist, a great lyricist, a pioneer in the metal genre and more than that (as opposed to what death metal would suggest) a sweet caring man and animal lover.

to have been taught to play guitar by Randy Rhoads would be a dream come true, and for those who were taught by him should feel very honored. Such a humble, soft spoken, laid back person. The kind of person you want to be around all the time, as you would a best friend. May his memory live on through the people he taught, and they great music he gave us.

A God gifted musician and a true Natural who possessed an incredible work ethic. Very rare in any walk of life. Think of people u know who are extremely hard workers but lack natural abilities or, conversely, the naturally gifted people who never reach their potential due to sheer laziness. Randy Rhoads was simply one of the Naturally gifted musicians who found his destiny early in life then out worked his peers to get to the top. Incredible role model, Timeless qualities.
I'm not so sure it was "God" given... but whatever deal he made, it blessed the rest of us with the most amazing riffs ever.
Randy gave those who had experienced darkness, hope, that was his greatest gift. There was light in the darkness and Randy’s playing was it.

A lot of people argue with me but I think he's surpassed Eddie and his short-lived career but he was doing things that I don't even think Eddie Van Halen could come up with, Randy Rhoads was a humble soul; didn't have the eagle and chip on his shoulder like Eddie does that's just my opinion

Randy possessed some unbelievable compositional skills. Even when he just plays the fragments of Diary and explains each element of the piece to students, he exudes complete musicality.
I saw Randy play in Birmingham Alabama 13 days before he passed away in 82 couple weeks later my friend who went with me to the show. Told me he was gone so sad.
11 years old when diary was released. I'd fall asleep every night with it blasting in my Sony Walkman. Really hit me hard when Randy was killed. He truly was an idol to me....

Look for 'Study number 6 by Leo Brouwer' and you'll find scores of classical guitarists playing Diary of a Madman. Randy borrowed many of the opening chords from this tune (which has been in ABRSM grade 5 for many years now), but made DOAM his own by how he developed those chords. Insane guitarist.
The intro for Diary of a Madman is actually an old Classical song that Randy Simplified . i learned it when taking classical guitar. Diary is a Master piece

Randy (RIP) died just after the second time I saw him in Milwaukee in 1982. Randy and I are born same day 12/06 and our moms are both named Dolores. I actually met him at the riverside theater in Milwaukee for the blizzard tour. We became instant friends. Ozzy said to Randy and me you guys look like brothers, I am the tall one Randy the small one. Motörhead opened. We talked about our love for classical music, opera, Elvis and Gary Moore.....
