I've heard that too. I took a little grinder and roughed up the surface of the oil pan sealing area. The rail and the front and back. No oil leak. Ohhh yeah. One piece gasket.
Dang it !!! Brad I'm rooting for you because you brought this car along way ,and that engine sounds great ,but it sucks when you pick up oil leaks !! But on a positive note at least you found the problem right now so you can Fix it , I know because i've been down that road myself , It's all about building a hot rod You'll get it together Friend 😃😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪💪💪👍👍👍👍
Oil leaks are always a pita. Many are hard to trace and always show up after you have everything assembled. Hope the fix works for ya. The '55 is sounding really nice. Look forward to seeing the next one. Be safe and stay well.
Hey Brad 🖐, just checking out whats going on. Its always something with hot roding . One forward and two steps backwards. But at leastyou are still getting closer. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend too🖐
Pull the whole pan off and do it right. Black silicon the whole gasket on the pan side. Press it down with your hands and make sure the holes are lined up perfectly. Let it set up a few hours. Clean the block surface and timing cover completely. Make sure everything is DRY apply black silicone to the gasket block side. Let set 10/15 minutes and install on engine. Put on the 4 larger corner bolts and snug down. Then install all other bolts and snug all in a cross pattern. Then one final time tighten all bolts and let sit overnight. Always worked for me. You should re snug after first heat cycle and periodically after that.
Moose is tryin' ta tell ya.. chome won't get you home. In this case it won't even let you leave home! The chrome covers leaked in the 70s when we stopped using them. Nice to see some things never change ;)
Always had problems with chrome timing chain covers leaking. Went back to the original one. And always use RTV on timings cover top an bottom. And rear of oil pan.
Hope that fixes the leak. I had the same exact problem on my sbc. When I first put it together, I used a 1 piece gasket. My buddy had a run stand so we ran it on the run stand and it leaked. My buddy hated the 1 piece gasket so I put an old school cork in it and had no leaks. Fast forward 4 years, I pulled the engine and put a solid roller cam in it. I put it back together with a new moroso oil pan and a 1 piece gasket. It leaked exactly like yours. I pulled the engine, replaced the timing cover with a Milodon cover and old school cork and now it is sealed up well. I love the idea of the one piece but I have had zero luck with them. Mob on.....
Better get a loud stereo to cover up the fuel pump noise. LOL. Bummer on the leak. My guess is the timing cover is too narrow for that gasket. 😢😢😢 crying in my beer for you and hoping I don't have the same problem since I used the same gasket.
Well hopefully by now you know there is a thick and thin gasket. I needed the thick one, hopefully you have the correct one and all is good. Yeah, that fuel pump is obnoxious.
The inner part of timing cover isn't properly attached to outer cover at spot welds the chrome covers just leak, see if you can find an aluminum one, Mr. Gasket, is my choice.
I tried using a gold anodized timing cover. Mistake! Bad oil leak anodiced timing cover was to thin and chincy. Went factory timing cover. Problem solved.
Well heck! That's the pits. I've heard that if you connect a vacuum to the top of the engine that you can spray some kind of solvent on the area that is leaking so that the oil is removed then add RTV. Vacuum will supposedly be sucked into the area thats leaking. I've never tried it but I heard that. 🤔🤷
@MontanaGarage supposedly just a low vacuum external source. Hook up vacuum and spray the area with oil grease remover, let dry then apply sealant and turn off the vacuum source. At least that's what my buddy did. He said that it worked. 🤷
You have the wrong gasket. There are two styles. One is for early pans and are thin. The one you need is the thick style in the timing chain valley. Easy fix.
Usually a safe bet, but it was my use of the wrong gasket in this case. Who would have thought it could just be my fault? That never happens... Thanks for watching.
I feel like that light gauge chrome plated tin doesn't seal very well. Also, if the gasket doesn't have those little metal sleeves to keep from being crushed, tightening the bolts will only make it worse.
Shocker I now, but I'm not good about following that stuff. Actually, I think the instructions ight have had torque specs in "inch pounds" ( I might be remembering that wrong) and I don't have a torque wrench for inch pounds so I went for tightish. Thanks for watching!
@@MontanaGarage I used to do the same thing. I was shocked at how tight Fel-Pro wanted the oil pan bolts. I feared they would snap, but using a very similar gasket and following their torque specs, no leaks.
Don't goop it with silicone, you dd speed hack, get the correct gasket for that pan, if you notice when you buy the cork gasket set, it comes with 2 different size front seals
We all have a little hack in us I guess... I was just trying to sneak by with an easy fix, and you are right, it didn't work but I figured it as worth a shot. Fixed correctly in an upcoming episode, although I probably still hacked something just because...
You have the wrong gasket, there are 2 different small block chev timing covers, one of them the groove is deeper, you need a pan gasket for like a mid 80 chev.
I have your answer what Fel-Pro doesn't tell you i you use an aftermarket oil pan or timing cover you have to use the old style pan gasket as it is thicker and will not leak that's what I had to do for my 1957 chevy 283 after that it never leak a drop
Yeah I know it's normal and part of hot rodding, but it's still disappointing to be so close and have to go backwards. AND there's more of that coming... Thanks for watching Carmelo!
Thanks Randy. I am so old that I actually knew that, but then forgot it if you know what I mean. Thanks for the reminder. The tape worked great when I had to re-do it...
That is typical of them chrome pans and timing covers with a 1 piece gasket .
I've heard that too. I took a little grinder and roughed up the surface of the oil pan sealing area. The rail and the front and back. No oil leak. Ohhh yeah. One piece gasket.
I did rough mine up a bit as well...
Thanks man. Yeah, it seems I have one problem after another, but that's hot rodding I guess. I appreciate you watching friend!
Dang Bud the motor was sounding great, and a oil leak Geee . Hope that works Man.👍✌️
Thanks Lonnie!
Oil leaks are always a pita. Many are hard to trace and always show up after you have everything assembled. Hope the fix works for ya. The '55 is sounding really nice. Look forward to seeing the next one. Be safe and stay well.
Thanks Brian. PITA indeed...
To bad about the oil leak just a minor setback your on a roll you'll make it thanks for sharing
Thanks a ton Dave.
Good luck Brad hopefully that fixes the leak👍🏻🇺🇲
Thanks Chris. It did not....
Hey Brad 🖐, just checking out whats going on. Its always something with hot roding . One forward and two steps backwards. But at leastyou are still getting closer. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend too🖐
Thanks man. Much apprciated.
Damm, My 55 210 is just about where you are with yours. Minis the radiator, oil, and starting it up. I guess I should do that next.
Nice! Good luck finishing things up and thanks for watching!

Yeah, I tried to do a quick fix, and it might not have worked... Stay tuned for more on that. Thanks for watching and trying to help.
I hope you got that oil leak fixed Brother, keep on moving forward. Nice job.🫵🏼💯🆒🇺🇸
Thanks man!
I've been, through the seat annoyance several times, it happens. I see fenders, nice, means you're getting closer!
Annoying for sure. Yes, I m close Josh. Thanks!
Oil leaks are always a bummer. Good luck with this one.
Bummer indeed. Thanks for watching.
Great video Brad. I hope you solved the issue.
I did eventually...
Use some black tape on your wobble socket to help it from flopping around.
I am so old that I knew that, but then forgot it. Thanks for the reminder...
If i remember correctly, after mine leaked , I ground off the chrome & used cork gasket & "The right stuff" sealant. Good every since. Live & learn
Thanks for the tip.
Moose is tryin' ta tell ya.. chome won't get you home. In this case it won't even let you leave home!
The chrome covers leaked in the 70s when we stopped using them. Nice to see some things never change ;)
Yeah probably should have changed put the cheap chrome...
Always had problems with chrome timing chain covers leaking. Went back to the original one. And always use RTV on timings cover top an bottom. And rear of oil pan.
Thanks for the advice!
I have been working on my project for 10 years now hopefully i can finish it before i assume room temperature
Haha you and me both buddy. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Hope that fixes the leak. I had the same exact problem on my sbc. When I first put it together, I used a 1 piece gasket. My buddy had a run stand so we ran it on the run stand and it leaked. Thanks for the info. I used the wrong gasket in this case. Stay tuned to see if the right one works any better... Mob on...
Bummer on the oil pan leak Brad, hopefully you got it sealed up and on to the next task! Have a great weekend!
Stay tuned to see how it went!
Had tat happen on my 76 Chevy truck
Yeah a lot of that going around it seems...
Cool video. Hopefully that oil doesn't loose its viscosity sitting in that pan 😬 😅! Enjoyed watching ✌️ 😎
I didn't know that was a thing. In any case, it came right back out again anyhow... Thanks for watching Stanley!
The inner part of timing cover isn't properly attached to outer cover at spot welds the chrome covers just leak, see if you can find an aluminum one, Mr. Gasket, is my choice.
Thanks for the tip Jessie. I should have replace it when I had the chance...
It’s the timing cover.
I reused one of those thin chrome covers and it did the same thing. May not be your problem but it sure was mine! 😂 hop u get it fixed
Usually a safe bet. In my case, I used the wrong gasket, so totally my fault. Shocker, I know haha Thanks for watching.
I hope that fixes it for you Brad. Hang in there keep plugging away at it. You can still make race week. 👍😎✌️
Thanks Kevin!
I tried using a gold anodized timing cover. Mistake! Bad oil leak anodiced timing cover was to thin and chincy. Went factory timing cover. Problem solved.
Good advice I am sure. Thanks!

Neat idea. Sounds a bit advanced for me though... haha thanks Gorni!

Yep, you are correct. Easy fix, but still a pain and wish I would have do it right the first time...
Those chrome timing covers and oil pans always leak. I hope you dont have a chrome radiator hose neck on it. Most are all warped
Yeah I probably should have gotten rid of the chrome...
Yep. I'd put my money on the timing cover.
Usually a safe bet, but it was my use of the wrong gasket in this case. Who would have thought it could just be my fault? That never happens... Thanks for watching.
The Lower Contol arm bolts of perfect reminders some bolts need a rubber cap B...O..N..K ( forehead)
Man I have BONKed my head so many freaking times on this build. Maybe that's what is wrong with me... Thanks!
I feel like that light gauge chrome plated tin doesn't seal very well. Also, if the gasket doesn't have those little metal sleeves to keep from being crushed, tightening the bolts will only make it worse.
Yep, that's why I didn't want to tighten it too much. I think this one does have the steel though. Stay tuned to see how well the fix worked...
Hey Brad what headers did you use on your car? thanks
Sorry man not sure on the headers. They've been on there since probably the 70's and there is no labeling on them Thanks for watching.
👍👍
👊👊👊
If that's a Fel Pro, they provide recommended torque specs for the pan bolts. Did you follow those specs? The spec is surprisingly high.
Shocker I now, but I'm not good about following that stuff. Actually, I think the instructions ight have had torque specs in "inch pounds" ( I might be remembering that wrong) and I don't have a torque wrench for inch pounds so I went for tightish. Thanks for watching!

Yep, I leaned that one the hard way. Stay tuned for a repair video...
Damit!!!!
Damit indeed!
Chevy uses two different gaskets on sb s
I know that, NOW.... Thanks for watching.
At least your not knocking dirt in your eyes.
There is that. Thanks for showing the the upside of things. 👊
Like you say why do it once when you can do it 2 or 3 times
Story of my life...
There is a thick and a thin one piece gasket (THIN) Fel-Pro 34509 (THICK) Fel-Pro 1880
Yep, I had the wrong one.... Thanks for trying to help.
You got this BRAD, PUSH THROUGH IT'S NORMAL WHEN BUILDING! TOO MANY VARIABLES
Yeah I know it's normal and part of hot rodding, but it's still disappointing to be so close and have to go backwards. AND there's more of that coming... Thanks for watching Carmelo!
The foreign made stuff, they do the same thing to the CLOTHES WE BUY!
Torching works
Yeah, some days I do feel like torching this thing... haha and also I should probably torque the bolts I know. Thanks for watching.
I can’t believe you don’t have surface rust on the car from sitting unprotected
There is a bit. We have a pretty dry climate here, so unless it physically gets wet, it stays pretty clean. Thanks for watching!
Chrome don’t get you home… yeah I said it. Hopefully you get back on track and get to Rocky Mountain race week
Didn't even get me away from home in this case. I thought chrome added like 50 horsepower minimum?
Vacuum leak
?????
???? Not sure Ken I don't think I have a vacuum leak.
BRAD, what do you call a Chinese oil pan that leaks?😂 SUM TING WONG, hope you get it fixed brother
SOM TING WONG indeed. Haha thanks man.
put some electrical tape on your wobbly and it will keep it from wobbling all over the place.
Thanks Randy. I am so old that I actually knew that, but then forgot it if you know what I mean. Thanks for the reminder. The tape worked great when I had to re-do it...
100 dollar, one piece Pan Gasket leaking? Chrome Chynna Timing Chain Covers are 4 the 🚮 CLEAN and RTV pain but nessesary 🎯
Yep, should have trashed them...
Good chance that chrome timing cover came from China. You can read into that whatever you want.
Yep...
C.h.in.a = some kind of copy, similar, not same as original . You should of trashed that cover @ the store @ the door , when you bought it ! Lol
You are probably right. Thank for watching.
It’s not easy working on your back in tight quarters ,while wearing bifocals . 🤓Can’t what to see it with the front clip on. Take care buddy. M👀k
Yeah nothing is getting easier as I get older. Thanks for watching Mook!
