    This first movie, albeit a slow exposition dump about who Alessa/"Cheryl" is, is waaaay better than the second movie. I'm a huge fan of the Silent Hill franchise and was confused at first when they decided to switch Harry's character from the game into a mother character. But the gore and similarities to the first game are what make me love this movie. The second one, however, is just a rushed romance, which has really no place in the franchise and it just squeezes lore from several of the games without explaining their origin.
    Lovely review by the way sir. I just found you yesterday and already look forward to your other reviews.

    • @braddsfx8921
      @braddsfx8921 3 года назад +3

      Totally agree and I also find that people tend to forget that Silent Hill one was about the atmosphere, it didn’t have the metaphorical monsters we see in 2, so the movie can easily get away with having Pyramid Head and just crazy shit from the first three games

    The line, "I'm burning," was so lacking in severity that it reminded me of that kid in The Simpsons: "I'm in danger." Seriously, I could imagine him on fire saying that. I once heard something interesting about why they changed it to a mother looking for her daughter instead of keeping in line with the first Silent Hill video game.
    I don't know if it's true or not, but supposedly they did that because they didn't think it would be relatable enough if it was still about a father braving all kinds of hell to get his daughter back. If there is any truth to that, I would argue that's pretty messed up, don't you think? I'm pretty sure some fathers care about their kids, too.

    • @luneregine765
      @luneregine765 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, seriously though, I doubt all fathers are like. Ah forget that one, we can just make another.

    • @loneronin6813
      @loneronin6813 2 года назад +3

      @@luneregine765 Yeah my father used to look down on me and claim that I would use my disabilities that got worse as I got older as an excuse for one thing or another that I was no longer capable of doing as a result and would claim that I was overexaggerating to gain sympathy, which couldn't be farther from the truth.
      It was only a few years ago that my condition got so bad that I'm still often in bed more than I would like. Suddenly he saw how hard I pushed just to maintain what I can still do and that I was doing all I could to keep myself going physically, mentally, and emotionally to reach my goals (which I still do) and something just changed in him.
      Now he is my rock and my biggest supporter and I'm his too. I love my dad and always have, but even more so now that we have such a strong bond and understanding of each other now. He is my hero and confidant and I'm his.
      I can't tell you how much I value that because no words can adequately describe it. Fathers are equally as capable of loving and understanding their children, even though for some it take a little while.

    I lived five minutes away from Centralia my whole life. I remember, when this movie was getting ready to be filmed, there was a rumor that those involved were trying to gain the rights to film the movie in the actual town of Centralia, but they were turned down. It was a huge topic of discussion! Centralia honestly isn’t that interesting, though. Just a deserted town with some smoke billowing from the ground and three cemeteries placed oddly close to each other.
    Oh, and I love the Family Guy references throughout the video. Your videos are always amusing! 😆

    @15:55 the source material is Harry Mason is taking Cheryl to Silent Hill, a small resort town for a Vacation. - The assumption being that it is during Summer Vacation. This is why waking up after a car wreck to see snow, is so...off-putting and wrong. Snowing during summer vacation. As you explore the town, you can see why Harry would have taken his daughter to the town, shopping centers & amusement parks, all there but twisted and mangled now. Taking what would be relaxing & fun, twisting it to something dark and anxiety inducing. It made the mundane, scary. Also, it did things to mess with the player like audio cues, and appearing buttons. Like things would happen, and you weren't sure if you missed it before. For example the sound of the radio getting louder as enemies would get closer, and solving a puzzle where it seemed like nothing had happened, you walk through a hallway, and you find yourself in the same location, but it is more disrepair and you can't get back to the way it was originally. The game was always getting progressively more and more anxiety inducing, more and more twisted as you progressed. This would match the state of the protagonist mind, since he was looking for a family member who he thought was in danger. In a lot of the cases, the "jump scares" were very subtle, and sometimes they would be big always changing and keeping you on your toes.
    Think Jacob's Ladder, done as a "game." Where you aren't sure if it is all in the protagonist head.

    turns 15 today!
    My first introduction to Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Alice Kriege, and Jodelle Ferland. Truly one of my favorite video game adaptations despite so many changes they made. The visuals are absolutely amazing nailing down the atmosphere of the haunted town, they get the camera angles, the gore is plentiful. They used a lot of the music from the games by Akira Yamouka. Director Christopher Gans manages to bring the style and appearance to life. Plus there is the feeling of isolation and dread.
    Although it does suffer from inane dialogue, silly plotting, and the essence of the source material is somewhat lost in the shuffle.
    Sean Bean's scenes are so jarring and slow things down they could've been cut out completely.
    At its core though it is a story about maternal love and adoption trauma.
    The movie cremates the conventional adoption narrative in cinema, drawing the nightmarescape of not only forming a bond with an adopted child, but sustaining it, and what that attempt to sustain it says about the adoptive parent. Mother is god in the eyes of a child but adoptees know religion is an opiate or a way to treat emotional pain.

    As vaguely as I remember this movie, I remember thinking for a videogame adaptation, I thought they did pretty good. I'm not a big Silent Hill fan, so I may be tone-deaf to how close it was to the games. I feel like a movie based on anything popular needs to stand on its own as a good film first, while also staying close to what made it popular. This movie seemed to do both, barring some bad CG, but it's not offensively bad.

      the only thing it did for adapting the game into the movie is nail the atmosphere. other than that, it’s an entire different story and the lore is less emotional but it’s not terrible

    • @calebgoodman2076
      @calebgoodman2076 3 года назад

      It’s a great movie but it was a very loose adaptation with a lot of changes, some which completely changed the plot. Which is sad since I feel like we could’ve gotten more if they followed the original story, considering how poorly the sequel did.

    I never played the SH game (too intense!) but observed other people playing, and I always enjoyed the spooky lore, and fantastically gruesome character artwork & development. For some reason, I kept going back to this movie - and watched it a few times looking for more meaning/resolution. I think after this video I can now put it to bed. It's not a great horror film, but it is a great adaptation of a super creepy- and amazing- game.

    I remember watching ths movie a year after it came out as a kid because my dad got it on bootleg and I was okay playing the first game and the second but by age 6 played silent Hill 3 and it scared the daylights out of me until I had the game sold after giving up in the theme park.
