Hi, so glad I found your channel. I have the same original color for my bannisters and I love what you’ve done! I have been considering this but YOU have convinced me. Thank you! Great job and beautiful color choice.
Good luck with your own transformation. I think you are going to love it!
I love that color!
It looks great!
Great video! It is exactly what I was looking for my project! Thank you very much!
Just starting that project in a few days. Thank you. Wish me luck,:)
Nicole Gauthier, Good luck! It’s hard work but so worth it!
Hi, Emily. It’s super dark brown. Almost black, but still brown. Good luck!
This looks amazing!
Thank you, Sharey. It was worth the work.
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!!!!!! I dont want banisters painted black. I wanted it to still look/feel like wood just BLACK.
princesslamour1985 I’m glad this will help you! Java is actually really dark brown, but the more coats you add, the closer to black it will look. There might be a black gel stain from the same company, too. We have a long-standing (joking) argument at my house as to whether the banisters are black or brown. I say brown, my hubby says black. 😂
It is such a gorgeous color!
I think so, too!
Hi love your very helpful and detailed video! Which masking tape were you using on this project?
Hi, Paul. I’m using blue Painters tape.
Would you say this color turned out a very dark brown or more of a black. I see it matches the metal or it looks like it does. Looks black to me but seems it could be a shade darker if u did an actual black. Only asking because at the moment my banisters need to be restained. They are dark but not this dark and I'd like them darker. This looks so good I really want to refinish mine now.
Emily Hansen I’m so sorry, Emily. Somehow I missed this comment. There’s a standing disagreement at our house whether the banisters are dark brown or black. I say very dark brown. My hubby says black. Java is a dark brown stain. I believe General Finishes has a black stain, too. It is not the same color as the metal.
This looks great! Do you have to wipe the gel stain after each application? I have a pickled oak bannister I want to stain to match dark hardwood floors. It’s pretty big and would love to speed up the process. Thanks
Robyn Ellis Hi, Robyn. To use gel stain, you wipe on the stain, so you do have to wipe every coat. I started out very light. When I did it at my sister’s house, we put on thicker coats, and it didn’t take as many coats. Have fun!
OneCreativeMommy.com thank you!
Looking great. Does the jel have any smell?
Hi, Aja. I actually don’t remember! I’m sure there was some smell, but I don’t remember it being bad. My entryway is quite large with high ceilings, so I’m sure that helped.
Can you java stain over paint?
I stained my kitchen cabinets the night before yesterday. This morning still I find very lighy residue of the stain coming on the finger on touch.. Should i wait longer before the top coat?
Hi, Srijita. I’m afraid I’m not an expert enough to answer that question. I would contact the stain company. I think they will give the best advice. Good luck!
Am I understanding correctly that this method does not require complete sanding to remove existing poly finish on the rail and newel post?
Yes. Just a light sanding is enough. You are just roughing the surface up a little-not sanding off the existing finish. Good luck!
How long was it tacky for when you took less stain off? We painted it on and now we’re worried it’s never going to not be tacky!
Hi, Erik. I don’t remember it taking super long to dry, but I live in a very dry climate. If it is super humid where you live, it might take longer to dry. Your can of stain should specify drying time.
Hello, thank you so much for posting this! I have a question, even though you want the stain to be the darkest why are you wiping it off ?
Hi, Heather. It’s part of the instructions on the can to wipe off the access. At first, I did thin layers because I wasn’t sure how dark I wanted the stain. When I knew I wanted it dark, I put it on much thicker, and I didn’t have to do as many coats. I did the thin coats for the video to show viewers the possible colors. Good question. Thanks for asking.
@@onecreativemommy If I want it to go as dark as possible should i bother wiping it off at all ?
Heather, I would still wipe it off. I don’t think you’ll get a smooth look without it. General finishes also makes a paint that ends up the same color as the darkest java stain. You can do that if you prefer paint.
@@onecreativemommy thank you so much !
@@onecreativemommy would you just do the first coat wiping off ?
Nice video girl
What color is that on your wall?
Nina Grewal , it’s Agreeable Gray by Sherman Williams. I love it! I’ve seen it in several homes, and I’ve loved it every time.
Is that Walnut color?
JesusWaytoHeaven17 , I’m sorry I didn’t see your question sooner. The gel stain is Java.
