    I'm a newsstand collector. For me, it's the memory of picking up comics off the spinner rack at 7-11 that gives the newsstand the nostalgic factor, a bygone era.

      I lived in a small town. My spot was the Rexall Drug Store. We’d get yelled at every so often as we were reading at the rack if we didn’t have enough money to buy the books. 😂

      ASM 252, Hulk 340, & Transformers 1 were the big 3 I remember buying off the newsstand. ASM & Hulk I bought at a gas station and Transformers at a 7-11. :)

      My aunt was a huge comic book collector. She would let me sit down and read FF1, AF15, x-men 1, and the list goes on; Decades ago, and she is long past. She would evangelize the need to read! That turned me into a collector as well. Living in NY, and visiting the fam, a train ride put you square in front of a newsstand where I would grab my newsstand copies. That's where I picked up was ASM 252, which just came back from CGC a 9.8 WP blue label. The upside in this story was my uncle who was in the Military and had the same bug. He was an XO on a Navy Nuclear sub. He would bring us both back those wonderful Mark Jewelers copies, some with those wonderful funny shaped stars stamped in the top left or right corner. Finally, nothing beats the smell of a newsstand first thing in the morning with fresh newspapers, magazines and comic books.

    I love this! We had a band that was on tour swing by at the shop I work for and one of them was hitting up every shop he could just to get as many copies of ASM 361 solely because of "out of alignment printing defects" on the cover. He absolutely loved collecting them and I ended up selling him a couple copies! I love the difference in collecting each collector has.

    This is a great video. I am in the midst of organizing my brothers estate of comics from the late 70s. Your video is a rare example of showing the old passion Joe and I had for comics as kids. Miss those days. Now it is a cut throat business trying to get the most money out of the product, regardless of the damage it does to the industry. The age of innocence is long gone. Anyway, thanks for a conversation from days gone by.

    As an OG collector I was able to pick up two Star Wars #1 35 cent covers in 1982 from a local collector in trade...he got buying small group of comics from a serviceman who was in California who bought in that test market. Unfortunately traded both off...first one went in 1980s for gasp a max $25 value Fantasy Quarterly #1 to a later big seller at a show. I did somehow keep a #3 35 cent cover non-reprint I didn't know I had which I sold later on early 1990s Ebay for several hundred dollars. Had a number of the test market 35 cent cover Marvels which I sold on Ebay in 1990s. As to the Mark Jewelers I got rid of most of these...hated as took up too much space in box and damaged issues ... Part of collecting history...

    I'm all over the place with my collecting, but Whitmans, Canadian price variants, and 21st century newsstand books I'll always grab when seen. A local used bookstore regularly gets in newsstand books from 2001-2010 and, being Canadian myself, Canadian books are pretty easy to come by. My only Marvel price variant, that I'm aware of, is my Avengers 147 30-cent variant in a 4.0 slab.
    Last year, I had a collection of Westerns come in, not my favourite either, but I discovered that half of them were actually 'Canadian edition' books for Roy Rogers Comics. Lots of fun looking up info on those! I am making my way through collections looking for DCU variants too. Oof.

    I bought several of both the 30 and 35 cent versions of SW #1, in 76-77 because it was obvious to me that they would be rare someday. I knew it was odd when I saw the higher price tag and just thought it was a price hike country wide. I lived in Oklahoma, and though it was not a reported test market, I saw mainly 35 cent copies there.

    Really interesting video. My understanding about the star that is stamped on some of the Mark Jewelers variants is that was done when checking out--to show that the comic was paid for. Some of the PX's didn't stamp--or, maybe the purchaser requested that they not stamp their copy. I came across a nice looking Fantastic Four 149 (I always pick up nice copies of this book because that was the first comic I purchased at my local 7-11 as a kid) that was a Mark Jewelers variant. I had it graded by CGC and it came back a 9.8. If only it had white pages instead of OW/W.

    I only buy Bronze keys 9.0 or better and (some) late Silver keys 7.5 or better. As such I am very limited in my opportunities due to cost and availability but it’s my “thing” and I can resonate with those that are drawn to ONLY rare variants and other “unique” considerations. Great vid guys. Best deep dive into this information I've seen yet. Love the honesty about the newsstand issues too. I collected since early 90s. Everytime I heard newsstands were so much more rare than directs I couldn't help but laugh. Then they came up with newsstands were treated badly on racks to say that is why they are more rare. This could be true....but the numbers would make that moot I think. When I was getting deeper into comics in the late 90s. I would find newsstands that would be better then directs quite a bit. Specialty shops didn't always hire "patient" kids to help in shops or the owner themselves. However when a distributor would be the one filling racks it was in better condition. Maybe weeks later it would be in bad condition from people thumbing it. If you were a collector though you bought and preserved it. This is what I remember and it made me laugh. That people would come up with these crazy reasons. Just to rise prices of books that, other than a tiny difference, are identical books. Just my honest opinion on the topic.

    I one thing I don't understand is when collectors get excited because there Cgc slab has white pages? What does it matter when you'll never even see them? 😅😅😅

    • @futurepastvintagecollectables
      @futurepastvintagecollectables  11 месяцев назад

      It matters. Books that have darker pages don’t receive as much money in the sale price, which is more of an issue when newsprint paper was used as compared to modern books and their slick colored pages. White page books pre-1970(ish) are harder to find, as the paper can disgrace over time. Some books only have a few white page copies, which denotes a “fresher, brighter” book. Slabs aren’t permanent, and some people crack the books out of the slab and keep the label. Due to the fact that you can’t look at the pages of a book when it is slabbed, it is important to identify page quality.

  • @JC-dg6vo
    @JC-dg6vo 11 месяцев назад

    Yes, I collect all those price variants, especially if I see 35 cents. You are in my wheelhouse. I have scored many single best copies. Folks pass them over and I grab them all the time. My Star Wars # 1 35 cent WP Blue label (not reprint) 8.5. When I saw it in auction, no one was bidding on it. Most likely because everyone saw an 8.5 next to the 6 - 9.4, 9.6 and couple of 9.8's and thought they wanted a higher grade. I grabbed it in the end for a sweet deal. I imagine folks throwing up realizing they skipped it for some cheap Star Wars 9.8 WP CGC. - Also, cool pedigrees on the top two rows.

    Interesting topic talk you have...yes regarding UK pence variant I assume were printed the same time the US cent copies were so the interior is quite the same and the outer cover except the caption where the price tag is was left blank to be probably in the US for overseas retailers meaning all Europe and many are seeking to have a price variant copy alongside their US original cent price tag.
    As for the Mark Jewelers inserts it kept the comic book firm as the thick centrefold pages acted as a sturdy support to prevent the comic from suffering from bends etc.
    And again the direct sales fetches a little more then the newsstand edition as it gives the comic book a much more prestige look.
    Also the foreign Marvel comic books fetch but mainly the particular ones.
    Example. Italian edition of il mitico thor (the mighty thor) the first series you have number 67 reprints Thor #168 Galactus meets Thor and the same for number 68 which is Thor #169 origin of Galactus. As you said one needs to fish for a reasonable payable price even on foreign comic books as well.
    Another is the Italian spider man L'Uomo Ragno #193 reprints the full appearance of Wolverine Hulk 181 and that fetches a little too.
    So keep up the good work! 😉👍🏻

      Those are all “blue chip” books with histories of growth over long periods of time. No one knows what will happen in the future, but they are all expensive and hard to find in any grade. I think it’s hard to make huge comic purchases for non-comic dealers, because that money is essentially gone once you spend it, and most people wouldn’t spend $1000’s on something that isn’t “practical “. I think it’s all about opportunity and money. If you have the money and the right book pops up, it will be the one you get first.

    I'm just a comic book collector. Boring. I buy fillers (love fillers). I collect Joe Kubert, Milo Manara, Tonto (only VF or better), bison covers and of course Uncanny X-Men. I don't think the Pence variants will be worth much ever, once in a while people try to hype them, but it never seems to stick. To me, the comics were made in the US and therefore, a Canadian or UK price variants are like counterfeit money, funny to have but worth nothing. I like direct more course of the picture, the bar code has no artistic merit. I like the comic book collectors, cause we all want different stuff. Someone will collect every cover of Superman 432 he meets, cause he loves it. Someone only collect books with crooked staples. A lot buy keys. I respect one and all. It keeps the books alive and it's fun.
