  • TfL have launced their new Cycle Hire Scheme, so we went out to take a ride around London trying out the new bikes to see what they're like, and discover how to use them, things to look out for - cost involved, everything you need to know!
    Initially launched as Barclays Cycle Hire, they got the name 'Boris Bikes', but a few years later the sponsor changed to become the Santander Cycle Hire Scheme.
    The TfL Website for Cycle Hire is here: tfl.gov.uk/mod...

    Dad pointed my in the direction of this video after the gig last night. I had no idea these bikes even existed! The video is brilliantly made and has about as much information as anyone would ever need. Great job!!

    Now have these in Milton Keynes! They are there because Santander's (the new sponsor of the bikes) head offices are there!

    I think it's a nice add on to the public transport system, but there are two mistakes. First one is the Key you need. Why not use Oystercard which is already there? Second one is something we have here in Germany. We have a similar system named Call a bike in a few cities. In those cities where the system is established over the whole city centre you could leaf your bike at any street corner, no need of a dock. And you could also rent a bike when you find one standing around. That's possible because all the electronics and the electronic lock are build in the bike itself. But we do have some bike stations as well, like at main stations.

      If it was using Oyster, all the bikes would be gone in a heartbeat. So at the moment its a better idea to let the people whom really want them to sign up for it

      "leave the bike in a street corner"... not a good piece of advice considering that now in 2018 in Singapore, users of shared bikes leave their bikes pretty much everywhere. It's a pathetic eyesore and a massive inconvenience to pedestrians

      @@darkdynasty5097 you can just pay to hire a bike by just using a bank card now, and I used the bikes today, but I had no trouble finding one, even though the bikes are well used and cycling has exploded post COVID, and it was a nice day

    Crazy to think that smartphone weren't very common when this was made. I was taken aback by how they were seriously suggesting navigating by paper map.

    Last time I was in London there was a bike rack just down from my hotel in Earl's Court. I had a look but couldn't quite get up the courage to try riding a bike in London.

    I would only go on the tube if the place I want to go is more than 20 miles away. If it isn't then I cycle :D I love cycling and I like that there are more bike paths

    Here in British Columbia, wearing a helmet is mandatory when riding a bicycle. If a police officer sees you riding a bike without a helmet, (s)he can fine you $100.

      I'd say the state is becoming a bit too much of a nanny when they're telling you how do do something you learned as a three year old. Same thing here in Australia, pretty ridiculous.

    is it free to use for 30 mins per day or free to use for 30 mins each time you undock a bike ? Can you dock a bike before 30 mins and undock another bik and get a free further 30 mins ?

    • @SafePlum3626
      @SafePlum3626 5 лет назад +3

      The First 30 mins of each journey are free. That is from a bike is undock until the bike is docked at a docking station. Any journey past that period costs you £2 for every 30 minutes like £2 for 1 hour, £4 for 90mins, £6 for 2 hours and so on. It is best used for short journeys.

    • @cassandranoorman7154
      @cassandranoorman7154 2 года назад

      That doesn't answer the question

    • @grassytramtracks
      @grassytramtracks 2 года назад +1

      After you pay the first £2, the first 30 minutes of each individual journey costs nothing extra, however many journeys you make, but if you go more than 30 mins in one go without putting the bike back, you'll be charged an extra £2 per extra 30 minutes or part of 30 minutes

    The amount of people injured on these things is kept quiet.
    I'm a London cyclisy for 10 years, it's dangerous enough on my own bike let alone these TFL deathtraps and I've tried them.

    • @grassytramtracks
      @grassytramtracks 2 года назад

      What makes them more dangerous? I feel that a reason is likely just that the people who use these bikes are likely to be less experienced than people riding their own bike

      Not legally required. People don't have to dress like wierdos to use bicycles. Cycle helmets are pretty useless anyway.

    • @mumblic
      @mumblic 7 лет назад +1

      Cycle helmets are only useful above a speed of 25 km/h. Lower then that you should be able to fall without hitting your head onto the ground. Lesson one when learning to cycle, is learning to fall in a way! ;-))

  • @GOML27
    @GOML27 4 года назад

    You should wear a helmet. She never mentioned this at all. Saftey 1st

    • @grassytramtracks
      @grassytramtracks 2 года назад

      Focusing on helmet wearing distracts from the real problem and watch the whole video before saying they missed something. Sure, wear a helmet if you want, it just could save your life, but a risk of helmets is that if you wear one, you are likely to take more risks, because you feel safer. More cycling is great for cities, public health and the environment, so more cycling is better and making more barriers makes cycling less attractive an option, which is not a good thing
