Homemade Fried Green Tomatoes are definitely worth getting excited over, 😄
When I was a kid one of the many things I looked forward to when visiting my grandma was her amazing fried green tomatoes! She knew it was my favorite and always had a batch ready for me.
I’m definitely a New England Yankee but I love fried green tomatoes, corn bread and a nice bowl of grits with butter.
As a fellow Yankee myself, I always love me some biscuits and gravy. 😋
Oxtails and pork bellies used to be poor people food, and it was cheap. Now they have been gentrified and they are very expensive and are found in foo foo restaurants.
When rich people found out that poor people food was delicious, the demand increased and so did the prices.
Ironically that's what happened to oyster and lobster too. Oyster bars was where poor people ate and there is a recorded prison riot because the prisoners were fed lobster too often. Obviously prices haven't gone down yet.
Quinoa was only eaten by natives until it became a faddy "superfood" and now they can't afford it.
Green tomatoes have a lot of acid that has not gone anywhere. Red tomatoes have acid too but it’s already mostly gone. Green tomatoes are tangy and have a zip that red tomatoes do not.
In the South you never address an elder by their first name😂
Same in Asian culture. If you do, it's as good as a strong backhand from any Southern lady. I can never call anyone older than me without the equivalent of "Mr", "Mrs", "Miss", "Ms", "Auntie" or "Uncle" without worrying about a stern one from my own mom.
The rule is (or was) that you could refer to them by "Mizz Sally" or "Mr. Joe," if you were well acquainted with them -- preferably close family. But when actually addressing them, it was Mrs. Smith or Mr. Jones.
Unless they ask you to, and even then a Mr. or Mrs./Ms. is added before the first name.
Normally I am just Darcy. In the South, everyone calls me Miss Darcy.
I live in the south and years ago when I lived with my family we were moving and the movers couldn't remember my moms name so they just called her Miss Lady and she loved it so much, it became a joke in our family and I still call her Miss Lady all the time. 😂
Bread pudding often comes with a warm bourbon sauce,
Here in my state we call the cornbread fixed like that hoe cakes. They are not sweet, the story I heard how they came to get that name is farmers and the slaves who would work in the fields really early they would take some cornmeal with them and make a fire and they would use the tools they had to work with like a hoe or a shovel and put it on the fire and make the hoe cakes on it. That way could get back to work when they were finished eating. How true the story is I have no idea, but it was interesting to me and I thought it made sense.
There were references to "Terry's Black", "Terry's Black's", and then there actually was a correct "Terry Black's" all in the same video. It never ends. 😂😂😂
I love it hahaha
I think you're thinking New Orleans with the seafood soul food twist. Tennessee is not a coastal state, and not known for their seafood.
Up and down both the Missouri and the Mississippi are small towns that raise their whole family on catfish. Especially for Sunday dinners, along with the best fried chicken ever.
If I ever get a touch of that catfish, I'd clear it. I will clear that basket and several more. I love catfish that much. Bestest thing ever.
Give it a splash of lemon juice , im all over it too!!
My grandmother made the best candied Yams. Would that them for Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.
Green tomatoes are tangy but very good when they’re fried.
Green tomatoes are firmer so they will hold up better to the frying
Corn bread with butter and honey!
Yeah, you guys definitely need to take a look at Jolly's video of them going Catfish noodling.
I second this!
Even Miss Manners will tell you it’s OK to eat fried chicken with your hands. NO UTENSILS!
You would have to taste 100 tartar sauces to realize everyone makes it differently and it will have a new taste every time except for a few that is the "original" tartar sauce flavor.
Amazing that people from UK come to USA for good food
6:15 “TAR TAR” sauce 😂😂
Green tomatoes taste completely different from ripped tomatoes. Green tomatoes are tangy. ❤
Explore the History of Soul Food.
There are plenty of sites, including Wikipedia and books about the Origins of Soul Food.
Knowledge Is Power!
EVERYONE between the ages of 2 and 200 is a Sir or a Ma'am in the South.
My father would say before 2 and after 200... they won't know anyway.

Finally met another South Carolinian
We call for fall autumn here in America too
It has been a while since since I had fried green tomatoes. I think it was in a small town outside of the entrance to the
Great Smokey Mountain National park.
Didn’t Josh and Ollie have candy yams when they went to New Orleans? I am almost certain they did.
Enjoying your videos.
Very educational. 😊
Millie, “some times MacDonalds gives my 7 McNuggets instead of six”…you’re so cute!
Bread Pudding was originally made with stale bread that was being thrown away. True Soul Food 🍞 🗑
Please do the Jolly video on catfish noodling. I'll be one of the first to see your reactions. Plus many more will watch.
Memphis born and raised. I have traveled the world in the Army trying new foods everywhere i go. Memphis has the best chicken and BBQ. Gus's Fried Chicken and Centrals BBQ hands down are the best spots in town. P.S. Never call a old person by their first name it is bad manners, always Sir/Ma'am or Mr/Ms *insert last name
You guys should actually watch that video where they went Catfish Noodling it was neat.
Bread Pudding is probably very similar to bread and butter pudding that y'all mentioned. It's so so good. Usually has raisins cinnamon etc.
Soul food is typically cuisine that was developed in the South within the African American culture.
You do need to watch the catfish noodling video. Also, I’m not big on fish or seafood. ❤
Catfish noodling is a niche you have to love and need to do. Otherwise it sure isn’t for the weak. Takes alot of patience and strength
with places like this around I wonder why people from other countries are excited to try fast food here..... its sad
It's their ignorance and/or arrogance. A lot of foreigners really think Americans eat fast food for breakfast lunch and dinner every day. They won't hear otherwise no matter what you tell them. Then they come here and try the most novelty items that are nothing like a regular meal we would eat, like a burger with donut buns, then they complain about how unhealthy "all the food in America" is. Knowing damn well they didn't even try to eat anything healthy when there were certainly endless options.
Candied yams are not considered a dessert
You must have tartar sauce with fish…try it
Fried green tomatoes are ~almost~ as good as fried pickles and fried okra.
I live in the Memphis area
Who knows what purple hull peas are? My last meal, if I had to choose.
OK James you say you don't like fish .. Never say "I'll never try it" 'till you have. You'll never know what your missing unless you do give it a try. Just like the saying I like to say .. " A stranger is a friend that you haven't met yet." Personally I'll give anything a go once , food wise , just to know if I like it or not.
Soul food is always defined as African American cuisine from the south. Usually made of things that wealthy plantation owners didn’t want. Collard greens, fried chicken, catfish, Mac and cheese, and a lot of stuff native to the area. You’ll see a lot of variation in what they serve.
It's also called "country cook'in". Being how I'm a Southerner it's just plain vittles. Cheers from Tennessee
It is derived from that but has evolved way past it. Slaves weren't making mac and cheese or marshmallow yams for themselves. It was the bare minimum for them, then when they were freed and later had access to more food variety they incorporated "better" ingredients and that's where soul food actually comes from. And that's why it's the same as southern food regardless of race.
You should react to worlds largest fish fry in Paris, Tennessee
You should make it your country
What do you thought was a pancake is actually hot water cornbread. It’s not baked.
Most places make cornbread much sweeter than what we made at home. I do not like the sweet/cake like versions.
It should never be sweet in the south. If it is it's not authentic, more like a novelty for tourists.
Yams and sweet potatoes are different
Yes, but the names are not used consistently at all.
Yeah there are zero real yams in the USA, unless you're at an African market that happens to have them. Otherwise, no matter what they call them, they're sweet potatoes.
Chelsea FC mate is the only club to support...
Soul food is just southern food - sone call it soul food
How can you be British and not eat fish. I thought fish and chips is the national dish
If you go to Memphis, don't stay after dark. Memphis is the most dangerous city in the US. The food is good, though there are places that are just as good.
Stay after dark if you want, there are good people everywhere and there are good people and good places in Memphis too. If you need tour guides let us know. Some people online are scared of every city . Our food, our music and our peoples passion for both rare unmatched. BTW we do spicy chicken, not hot chicken. We leave hot chicken to Nashville.
Have you been there? Or are you just saying that because of what you seen on social media? I believe alot of cities in the world are dangerous but there some good people there.
That's statistically untrue.
@@deltajukejoint1561 There are good people in Memphis. But they are overshadowed by the violence of many of their neighbors. The difference between Memphis and Kyiv, Ukraine is that you are much less likely to meet a violent death in Kyiv -- even though it is in a war zone.
If you look at these surveys that rank states, Tennessee is often low in the rankings because of Memphis and the crime there. If we could get Mississippi or Arkansas to take Memphis off our hands, the number of violent crimes in the state would plummet. But neither Mississippi nor Arkansas want Memphis. And I really don't blame them.
@CCoburn3 Tennessee doesn't rank low because of Memphis, Tennessee ranks low because its four largest cities rank above average in crimes. This is not what the youtubers wanted to do when they released and discussed the video. Instead of coming on this site and encouraging more people to visit areas and learn about areas there is always a negative group of people that want to come online and discuss crime rates and make other people fear things and places they might not know anything about. Anytime you visit an urban area in any country you should be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Compared to where they are from the USA is probably considered a violent country but that is a different discussion. Let them enjoy learning about areas and cultural regions of the USA while encouraging them to be cautious and move on. Stop coming on here and talking and complaining about St. Louis, Detroit, Memphis and some of other cultural capitals because you are afraid them or do not like them. Encourage them to explore and learn. Some of you get scared to go out regardless of where you live. Stop with the unnecessary negativity.
Why, Brits who have worse for in the World, deem pickiness? Then take huge bites because they do not want to taste their food.... You do the huge bites Mr. Beesley.
I have had cornbread that was not good so it’s possible that Ollie had that tasting corn bread.
I have never liked the way my mother made cornbread. She never cooked it right. It is supposed to be equal parts flour and cornmeal, but she always had very little flour which meant the result was a very course and dense cornbread.
Catfish don’t have real teeth. They have modified bone plates that face backwards allowing them to grip things. They are bottom feeders that eat anything dead or alive that falls down to the bottom. Honestly they really aren’t that dangerous except a few species that live in South America. In America two species of catfish are here but neither are dangerous. The channel catfish and the bullhead catfish. The bullhead is slightly aggressive but not that much. Channel catfish are around but meh. Basically they come up all the time on fishing lines and they aren’t bad just really put them in seasoning first. They don’t have much taste on their own. England has its own catfish called the Wells catfish which can be giants.
If you want to see real catfish noodling then you need to check out Hannah Baron what the jolly guys did was barely noodling
The Jolly video of them catfish noodling isn't that great. Hannah Barron is a lot better to watch when it comes to catfish noodling.
77 F, too hot?? 🤔🤷♀️ Any cooler, and I'm chilly!
I think 37 °C is like 98° F, if I'm not mistaken.
Catfish is terrible. Taste like mud
Never had it but she might cook it the right way.
@@MsChiefsfan-w4k not good. I am not cheifsfan. Swiftee
@@scottgraney5275 I don't care what you are and I never asked.
@@MsChiefsfan-w4k you through it out there
Ran catfish trotlines for 3 years in HS and sold the catfish to Restaurants in Charleston SC.
I don't know who cooked it for you, but they did you Wrong.
Not a sweeter fish on the planet if it's prepared correctly.
