I'm Japanese, but this is the first time I've heard the word "japandi"! Scandinavian style has been popular in Japan for a long time. Perhaps it is because they are simple and easy to adopt each other. It's so fun to see my culture being mixed and re-imagined abroad!😊❤
1:40 "Isn't a real word" ... sure it is; this is called a Portmanteau (a subset of Neologism) where a word is created from the fusion of two words. Similar to common words like Motel, Brunch, or "Floordrobe" for when a person stores his/her clothes on the floor. Even works in other languages, like the Japanese "Tsundoku" (tsunde-oku+dokusho) which is when you start to accumulate books in small piles for "someday" reading.
The same thing crossed my mind too. Regarding this video I am also wondering how did they implement in apartment this size things that growing toddler needs..
@@paulinajakubowska1138 Yes I do realize that, and not just because I live with a husband and a toddler in a smaller apartment than this one in a video. That is why I am interested how he would implement toddler things. Especially if they decide to go with montessori approach. But I am guessing this is the subject of another video...
I have that rug. After 18 months it still looks brand new despite two 8 year old boys playing on it. Best rug ever! Lovely in winter. Softens our harwood floor.
Wow I love the “Japandi” set up for the apartment! It looks so welcoming and warm and not too feminine or masculine which is so great for a family! Great job Daniel!
As someone from Scandinavia I really like our interior style but felt that it was lacking in some places and then I saw a few videos about Japandi and this style is so me to a tee
I enjoy your videos. It's wonderful you have lots of windows. Your home is calming. Everything in its place. Your view of the trees must be beautiful. We purchased Article furniture a couple of years ago and we still love it. All the best to you and your family.
In my opinion too many cool greys for it feel hygge and too polished for to feel wabi sabi. Maybe you can get your daughter to paint a large piece above the couch to juxtapose against the grey couch, rug, poof and throw. Or any piece of large art /photography to tie to together as maybe it’s the void walls making me feel that way. Also that clear vase sitting against a white wall , I would have incorporated maybe some wabi sabi there with some nice textured sculptural pottery as it’s the only thing with height on the side table. One large indoor plant/tree will also bring some more texture and warmth and tie it together while still being minimal. However the main thing is that you enjoy and love the space, as this is only my opinion for finishing touches and everyone has a different style. Overall looks like a great place to live ! :)
That golden pothos plant doesn't trail slowly. I hung two that size in my kitchen windows. About a year later, I've pretty much got 'jungle curtains'. Awesome!
Starting the renovations on our house in London today. Over the past year of planning I've been looking to your videos as my main source of inspiration. I don't really watch TV or look forward to show but every week I look forward to your videos. Great job as always. Hope you get enough family time while you're at it.
I've been watching a lot of your videos since I'm already moving into my new apartment. I wish there would be something like Article in Europe, I love it!
Welcome back to BC ! Im an expat too.... been here in Vancouver 22 years. Bet you're glad to be out of UK at the moment! Crazy cost of living there now Thanks for posting . Article stuff is great ... i just got a patio lounge set from them so comfy.
I was struggling to find “my style” and just yesterday stumbled upon Japandi and said “ohhh that’s it!” Such great timing with this one 😀 Love what you’ve done with your place! I’ll take you up on that “unkillable plant” bet 😂
I found my preferred style 20years ago in posh alpine chalets I visited while working ski seasons, I called it "modern rustic" which probably leans more toward the wabi sabi style, but with modern electrics and lighting to highlight the rustic features. However, I live in a 1970s mid terrace with absolutely zero rustic features 😅
I feel seen Daniel!!!! Our daughter is almost 1yr old and also sleeps in a portable crib. What we thought was going to be a temporary choice turned into a pretty permanent one haha. The best thing is when we travel anywhere she’s fine because she’s so use to it. We need to move again as well so you’re inspiring me and my husband to purge our apartment big time in the next move.
I wonder if you could put a bit of taut, durable, hanging fabric from the bottom kitchen cabinets to hide the busyness and dust of the legs and the bottom of the dishwasher? It could also add a bit of warmth and texture to the kitchen. Maybe attached with velcro so you could easily toss it in the washing machine when needed. Beautiful space and good job on a modern rental. That view really makes it a wonderful apartment!
I am especially attracted to when you mentioned “even as parents”. Makes me wonder: how do you raise your child as a minimalist? I think it’s an interesting topic to make a video out of. Because me and my wife are expecting a child soon enough and at the same time I will be moving to Germany. So I plan to decorate our house there, inspired by your vid. Great video btw.

This isn't japandi, this is just Scandinavian / minimalist. There really aren't enough wood and warm textures and elements to make it really feel japandi.
Hello! Thank you for the amazing video. It gave me a lot of inspiration of decorating my next apartment. Would you mind sharing the info for the bed frame?
Can you please do a video on your office and camera gear organization? I feel like there are no minimlist videos about that topic, especially for small spaces on youtube... would greatly appreciate your perspective on that - love your aesthetic and minimal, japandi style :) really great video and great apartment tour - I´m excited to see more :)
Lovely set up. FYI, May be a better idea to have your bedroom in the west facing room which receives all the afternoon sun and thus passive solar heating.
I’m kinda annoyed that a lot of videos giving a title “apartment tour” but ended up showing super closed up on minor stuffs most of the time. But good apartment interior. It’s very clean and carefully designed.
Lovely. It looks comfortable and harmonious. Great open views from the apartment windows, too! Chair and sofa are great designs. Love the wood frame on the armchair, beautifully made.
I sat on that office chair once (it's from IKEA). xD This is probably the most uncomfortable chair ever :D Maybe you could fit smaller cabinets on top of the existing kitchen wall cabinets? That would solve the dust issue. Your apartment has great windows btw.. ;)
Great Japandi vid, Daniel. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll be moving back to Texas, soon, and look forward to adapting this to my personal style. Bright blessings.
Hey Daniel, together with my team, we’re working on the brand strategy, story, identity, UX, etc. for a small Japandi furniture manufacturer, in order to reposition them into the lifestyle brand that they deserve to be. Now you, being this awesome designer yourself, are part of their target audience (both as a direct buyer of the furniture, and also as a B2B partner). We’re doing a bit of qualitative research, and would love to have a chat with you on the paint points that someone like you might encounter in this industry, what would make you choose a furniture brand over another, how would they/we improve your life and UX/CX online and offline, what is it that you’d want to see from a furniture brand that would make you be like: “Yup, look no further, found them.”, and so on. Also, very interesting to us (coming from Denmark) are all the people who are not Japanese nor Scandinavian, but who do prefer this beautiful unity of cultures that Japandi brings, over other styles. Would you be up for a chat like that?
That house looks Sick! But i think your audio still needs a little fixing, it sounds a bit hollow. But I love your work so I think you already thought about that.
I love your apartment plan. It is perfect since I'll be downgrading to something smaller with my 11 year old son. Will it be possible for me to get a copy?
