10:02+ = The synth Ty is referring to is the Yamaha AN1x .. He forgets to actually name it in the clip. It IS probably one of the BEST VA synths ever made. Its sound palate is enormous!
great interview and proper banter.. loving the studio Ty
Great interview and room tour!!! You just made a lot of Sonicstate Chatties very Happy!!! rKs
I can't believe someone actually owns a Schmidt. I'm incredibly impressed.
Top bloke. Great chat. Nothing precious, just down to earth banter. Oh, and he's written some good music too!
At 28:20 when he starts talking about saving "Sample Templates" for his projects, my heart sang a tune of love:-). Making templates for your projects (especially when they're HUGE projects) is a real lifesaver!!!
I've never heard of this gentlemen before, but this was a great episode. Such a humble man he is, and his studio, his input and insight, and his knowledge about his craft - everything about his personality had my FULL ATTENTION during this entire interview. Thanks a lot for the introduction, Creative Cribs!!!
Absolutely FANTASTIC . Thank u
You 2 are hysterical laughing and giggling over the equipment and samples. I was laughing at you 2 laughing ha ha. Great video.
Fantastic interview, few choice nuggets in there as well. Love it.
its nice to see how other composers do it, especially big composers who have access to anything and can afford anything this is a treasure trove of information
Very inspirational. Thank you both.
“Volca Keys...I do most of my work on here.....” LMAO! 🤣😂👌
i'm rather excited about this series. way to go!
Fantastic interview with Ty, great to finally have a look at his studio after watching him loads on Sonicstate and only seeing his ceiling and bluury synths behind him. loved the Piano death scrape bit.
AN1x I still have after 20 years. Love it
Loved it!
Your studio is sooooooooo beautiful and awesome!!! I'd love to have just 25% of it. Out of the series, it's the one I liked the most I think.
PLEASE!!! Keep up this series!!
I think this was the most fun Creative Cribs interview so far.
This man is a real legend
synth and hardware heaven!
After seeing Ty many times on the Sonicstate podcast I always assumed his room was an underground lair and he didn't see natural light for months at a time. He really is a master of what he does without any trace of ego. As much as I'd love lots of the equipment he owns I wouldn't need it in the way he does on a daily basis. I'm glad he's as busy as he is and has found a way to make a living from creating music. It's a profession where doing so is becoming increasingly difficult.
If you're absolutely brilliant at what you do, it's easy.
Awesome Studio and Great Navigation System and these guys should become Comedians and to have their own TV show
LOVE THIS
Very fine collection ! What an audio nerd.
Great Guy!
Loads of fun. Great ending!
Great video!
Tie Un-win.
Because participation is more important than winning :)
I just found out about Ty (after watching an old BBC series on Celtic Britain - brilliantly scored!) and had to check him out 😀
Fantastic studio setup & lovely collection of sonic goodies!!
Ty seems a really good guy, open funny and honest, to talk to about music...
Incredible collection of unique and high quality instruments and sound equipment. I knew the Casio was used by top composers as the go-to piece of gear . . . I can hear it on EVERYTHING ! I have to get one.
OMG! Worth a fortune.
I love the fact that he owns a micro Q and a Yamaha AN1x among all those massively expensive and legendary synthesizers. I'm crap at managing my savings, so I've had to "make do" with low-budget, second hand synths and samplers, and those are the two hardware synths I own. Makes me think I must have chosen pretty well.
AN1x was my first synth, had it for over 10 years, but I've been recently digging into it a lot more, and really falling in love with its beautiful sound for a second time. I´ve been programming some more expressive performance-based sounds on it recently, and it´s really hard to describe what it does so brilliantly, except that it sounds amazing, every single time I play it. Amazing pad sounds just fall out of it by accident. Monoleads are great fun to program and tweak to get the expressivity just right. But I've also done vintagey organ and electric piano stuff, psychedelic drone and fx sounds, and some really massive string and brass patches. Four lanes of motion recording (free eg), effectively giving you an extra set of of four lfos or envelopes to modulate sounds. Good onboard fx, plus the onboard parametric EQ has been a little lifesaver more than once.
The micro Q is brilliant for weird digital noises. I get a lot of percussive stuff out of it, using the inbuilt "drum kit" section. Multis are great for when I do these soundscape-like things with my band. For one track, I've been doing a number of different alarm and siren type sounds, with helicopter noises, gunfire, bombs, etc. creating this big "terror" of sounds. That's all inside one multi on the micro Q, built up out of 8 patches mapped to different midi channels, corresponding with keyzones and controls on my controller, so I can play and tweak with it live. You can also stack a couple of patches on top of each other to create huge pads, textures, strings. And the architecture of the engine itself is really flexible. The only downside is the interface, but I've sort of gotten used to it now.
All in all I'm very happy with both. I'd love to have a couple more of the synths Ty has. I'll probably never own a system 55, a Schmidt or a Hartmann Neuron though. That's some X-rated gearporn there, and youtube really should put up an age-restriction for that. But Ty said he does all the big stuff on his casio and a volca keys anyway, and I sure as hell might up ending both of those.
"All the bigger scores are done on my Volca Keys" LMAO ...Really drooling over the Schmidt though. I don't think I've ever seen a Schmidt, a Neuron, and a Solaris under one small studio roof at the same time before. Incredible Crib!
You're crazy, but also amazing and I love your sounds :)
Very happy to have AN1X as well. Love it.
This guy is awesome.
Wow! 20TB of libraries! that was amazing.
i hope one day I can have all the synths i love and grew up with.
Mr Unwin. I really loved the special murmox you got from dreadbox. Unfortunatley my experience with their "g system modular was quite dissapointing.(they used wood screws to hold the cards in wrong power wart ribbons not secured etc.).so when i found out only fifty of the murmox were made i thought maybe you might know if they had plans to put that out again in the near future? That was the synth i really wanted this whole last year. Any info you can share? Peace christo
very nice! thx for sharing ...
Does anyone know where you might be able to find something similar to the sliding drawers Ty uses at 4:27 ? Looks like a very handy solution to keep all your little toys and pedals patched in.
Ooh that Schmidt is a Beast!!! I thought I had some nice synths in my collection but that's just epic. Although iv just added a polybrute to my collection which seems to be nice .. defo need a Seaboard though keep promising myself one of them ..
Really nice studio this btw
Very interesting to see a seasoned composer with no vintage stuff in his workstation!
#Dreamcave wow Ty, knowledge and gear. An unstoppable force. Thanks for the inspiration, see you on sonicstate.
Dream setup.
What a cool guy! Anyone know what kind of rack stands he's using for his keyboards and drum machines?
Super impressive! id love some help picking a hardware synth sounds like diva? thanks
The 80s sound will not go away.
Lol, he’s rewiring everything again, here in 2021!
Very humble dude, great artist as well 10/10
I wonder if Ty ever counted all the knobs ?
This was shot less than a year ago, so curious as to when you picked up both Modals? Lovely set up.
Not sure about a rewire but his clocks batteries definitely need changing. I could happily curl up and live on the floor of that studio. I first became aware of Ty Unwin when he co-produced one of my favourite albums, Justin Sullivan's Navigating By The Stars. Wonderful guy.
@Spitfire Audio, Would love to see a new tour for Ty, what has changed in his workflow, etc.
Nothing beats good British humour.... unless it's good British humour + talent + humongous quantity of gear!
Great :)
Finally! For years I have attempted to peak around you on Sonic Talk, nice studio. Kind of expected to see most of what you have....except where is the MoogOne?
Love the studio, your like me, I really like KNOBS. Note To C Dorman...He said at the beginning of the video, he was rewiring some of the gear.
Strange question... Did you compose the incidental music for James May Edge of Space??? More specifically the music playing when the U2 is on the edge of space and then comes into land? It’s a stunning piece of music and I’ve been searching for it for years. Is it available to buy? Best regards and much respect 👍😎
I thought I had a lot of equipment but this is absolutely obscene!
Me too...
there are synths hanging there that he probably hasn't used in 10 years..meanwhile soft synths are doing all the work...or the volca
Sweet Lord. 😮
So what are your keyboard stands? they look so slim
Hilarious guy xD
Journey to the edge of the Universe documentary
brought me here.
What sample library does Ty use at the end ? with prepared piano sounds.
Do you know the answer already?
What an impressive collection of white ravens...
That bag of trix sound the sraping Klavins Piano.?...I created and recorded that sound with a guitar pick on a 4 meter high piano in Köln late 80s:-)
I also thought the Schmidts were a myth until now. Paired with Moog 55, perhaps the ultimate ooze porn mono/poly pairing?
any lights so we can actually see what he's talking about?
Next week on Hoarders...
Ty I have enjoyed your participation on Sonic Talk .I am curious about the synth on the top of the last group of physical synths You were very clear about it being "plastic and blue" but beyond that you never said what it was actually named (other than that it was better than the OTHER blue plastic synth! Can you tell us please what is the best virtual analog synth you can not part with thanks.
+stuknd80s its an Yamaha AN1X
+david goodman Thank you I have listened to a couple of preset /patch segments and am very impressed with the sounds of this synth! Thanks again for your responce
I have one it's a great synth but slightly tricky interface lots of menu diving.
+stuknd80s I have to agree with Ty, Yamaha AN1x is really the best sounding VA synth out there. Highly recommended to buy one if you find one for sale
+Locco Motive thanks for the advice I would love to have one along with a fs1r ,now thats a hard one to find especially under a thousand dollars ( and one owner, not gigged -out and kept in a "smoke -free "enviornment ) yes I am picky, picky !! Thanks again for your info
What, no vcs3?
I have the same ikea dustbin as Ty Unwin. Go me.
Yeah, a real collectable
What's the blue and plastic yamaha at 10:15 ?
Brett Ennis an1x
A two or three inch paintbrush will solve all your dust problems without moving any pots.
Did he play in a band???
"I used to buy everything".
Money doesn't seem to be an issue with this guy.
Hello Ty , about the electro magnetic mic I have one as well there is a specific short wave module in modular world ! I will send you the name . There is also an iPad app that is about showing the waves around us. Going to tell you as well when I find it. But the best thing about your comment on sonic state was, that if you can reimagining is little bit of being a scientist as a kid , it's worth all the money. This felling is about finding something you didn't know at the beginning , isn't that what makes Musik spirit as well I have a record here which title e is. , music is an hungrie Ghost. , ! please excuse my terrible grammar tonight. Main Language is German bon nuit
The Gag Reel tho...
Great collection of modern synths but what a managerial nightmare lol
Geezer.
Having a Moog Modular and not spending any time with it... Heresy!
Where's the Nord I dragged you to the shop to hear it for piano that cuts through the mix and you bought it there and then? , Tommee !
???????
+TyUnwin I met you years ago and only once and we went to a music shop and you bought a nord lead
+Kerberos maybe 10 years ago I can't remember
Oh... hi Kerberos... I'm sorry I have NO recollection of that... at all!?! Where was that?
+TyUnwin can't remember but the music shop was walking distance from your place and it wasn't that place in the video. Unless I'm confusing you with someone else, really was a long time age, am I right ? You did own a nord lead and sold it then? Or have you still got one that's not in the video?
Fark that is a lot of cash on synths.
it is blue , and it is plastic, but it sounds funtastic :) :) :) 10:30
lo odio.... yo estoy tratando de juntar unos pesos para compra una maquina nueva y el tiene de sobra =,(
40 hours just to make the template!
“Korg Oasys sounds better than the Kronos”??? I dont think so, as well as many major artist worldwide. They do sound different.
"Nothing else quite sounds like a wavestation" - Until now ;)
Good grief man!
tis not about music than. ?
kinda makes you feel like shit when you see these great studios with thousands of dollars worth of gear compared to yours
I give up.
not one fucking note played.
he told us in the beginning everything is disconnected because he's re-doing his setup
There is no need to in a studio tour.
No, you're kidding ? Think you're wasted on RUclips comments, you should be working for Scotland Yard pointing out the obvious
Too much stuff not enough tunes
What an endless pit of money can buy eh?
Sort of takes away from it..
Who pissed on your chips?
Great video!
4 mins 46 sec! Haha! Hilarious!
