Very good series. Looking forward to finding out what failed in the engine. I have been I'm the process of overhauling a 2006 4runner 1GR-FE for about 2 months. Taking it slow as I needed to figure out why it had experienced two head gasket failures in less than 3 years. I found that the heads and the block BOTH had over .003" warpage (probably from a massive overheat before I bought the car. Previous owner paid almost $4k for the head gasket work which included sending the heads out for machining, but I guess they didn't notice the block was warped as well, so the new gasket failed within a short time between cylinders 2 and 4. I used a long granite plate with 200 grit open face sandpaper to get both the block and the heads to less than .001" of flatness. 200 grit is within the specs for proper finish when using MLS type gaskets. The valves looked ok, but some of the intake valves were also no longer sealing. Pistons were reusable once the carbon was removed from the ring lands. I used Simple Green to soften the carbon. Bought some new Japanese rings, but not Toyota brand. The oil rings are ridiculously low tension. New main bearings fit fine. The new rod bearings however were narrower than the oem, and they produced .003" clearance which was outside the specs. I ended up reusing the original rod bearings which gave clearances of .0015". Sure hope it works after all this effort.

I have my 05 in the garage right now. Coming up on two months redoing the head gasket my self. Checked clearances for the buckets. Remarkably at 260k all are in spec or just slightly over on the exhaust side. Which i read is fine. Very amusing this channel is rebuilding the same engine that’s been giving me head aches the past month.

Or should I try some of that glass sealer in a bottle ???

My overhaul was very successful, so far. 200 psi in every cylinder and not using any oil or losing any coolant. Some of my rocker clearances are a little off, so it's a little noisier at idle than factory. Since I did all my own machining of the heads, block and valves the total cost was about $1000. That covered the gasket set, timing chains, rings, main bearings, fipg sealer, new harmonic balancer, etc. Reused the nearly new water pump. I always use the green Prestone coolant.

Awesome series thanks! Can't find any more though? Would love to keep watching. I have an Australian LC120 Prado with the 1GRE-FE and love it!

Love your channel. As a Toyota newbie who is considering buying a 2005 Tacoma, this is fascinating to see how the 1GR-FE works and how it is engineered. Thanks to your careful and detailed reviews, I feel much more confident to tackle some of the bigger jobs on my vehicles. Grateful for you taking the time to go through each of these step-by-step for us. Thank you Petr!

I own a FJ Cruiser and one of the prime reasons to get this vehicle apart from many other factors was this well designed ultra reliable engine. Thank you for explaining in detail.

Great video! I have one of these in my 4runner. I'm loving the in depth look. I hope I never have to go deep like this, but at least I'll have seen it ahead of time. Mine is a 2008 that has 291k miles.

Thanks for the great info on the 1GR! I’m a DIYer troubleshooting misfires / low compression on cylinders 2 4 6 (P0300, P0171) on my ‘05 Tacoma at 270k. Started out with P0016, for which sensors were replaced and then timing components. Just installed all new timing components, appropriate seals, pcv valve, cleaned vvt’s, checked for vacuum leaks. I’m thinking a minor blown head gasket. What diag should I perform prior to removing the heads?

My 05 had the gasket issue. Back around 145k it was rough starting cylinder 6 misfire codes. I threw a bottle of k-seal in it. It sealed for up to 260k. Issue came back rough starts and eating coolant. It’s been in the garage the past month as I replace the head gasket. Almost complete with the job.

5 pain stakingly long videos and you have removed two valve covers and the crankshaft pully.. this is hard to watch . maybe write out some bullet points for important things you'd like to make note of instead of just rambling on and not actually disassembling the engine . this is a great concept for a video as alot of folks, myself included are very interested in the tear down of a 1gr-fe but you are not executing it very well .
