  • Brandon Smith and Laine Jewell are not your cookie cutter bird hunters. In fact, the journey to becoming bird hunters came in different ways than most. Brandon got a German Shorthaired Pointer and decided since it was a bird dog, that he would take it bird hunting. Fast forward some years later, and Brandon and Laine take it upon themselves to restore a 100 year old trappers cabin in Wisconsin grouse country. The rundown cabin over time would become the grouse camp- Camp Thunderbird.
    Their journey is more than just a grouse camp in the woods. It is the growth of a relationship, a change in lifestyle, learning a new passion for bird hunting, and finding meaning in the grouse woods. Brandon prides himself on the way his dog has evolved in the woods, his pursuit of the King of the Birds, and his fascination with the American Woodcock. . Laine shares her pursuit for the Woodcock or doods (as they call them).
    This film transcends time as the past becomes the future. A slower life becomes the better life. It is the grouse camp epoch.

    These videos are amazing it’s nice to have the personal stories that go with hunting. With today’s culture being so against hunters we need more of this. Conservation goes hand in hand with hunters and I appreciate these videos showing that.

    Nice story that overcomes a lot of stereotype and shows the essence of the relationship between people and their natural world. I was not raised in a hunting family and hunting never appealed to me until a person with strong land ethic, a person in the heat of executing the restoration of an old burnt out farm, requested my help in reducing the rabbit population that was overcoming his native-species plantings. I reluctantly took up a Glenfield .22 and with his and his son's careful guidance I began hunting. The first kill was no thrill. It actually was stressful in that I had never intentionally killed anything other than fish BUT that quickly was overcome the moment the pan of rabbit, potatoes, mushrooms and sauces hit my plate. I officially became a bunny hunter. There were many times in hunting that nary a bunny or squirrel appeared. Still, just being in the woods became as spiritual as anything could and as long as I lived in Wisconsin I tried to participate not only in hunting but also in preserving the very thing that makes such opportunities possible.

    Grew up hunting in wisco with my dad. We had this rusty old hunting shack that he bought and we built up and after my dad passed I go there every weekend no matter what weather no matter what time. I load up some shells grab my old 12 gauge grab my dog Stella and walk through the woods all day looking for grouse

    Wow. Great story and fantastic video. Was this posted somewhere else earlier? Or is this the first release? Watching it in mid March in VT with 2 feet of snow on the ground is just brutal however. Toss in that music in the video and I'm not sure I can make it thru the day let alone make it 'til October.

    3:42........Be glad you have that privilege of having a place to clear your head. Not many in this country have that place they can go to of their own.
    4:23........These are the days. Yes, live in the now because it is all that you have. In the woods, my mind clears and I only think about that patch of elders in front of me, or that fallen Birch that I have to step over. Or where my idiot pup got to. :-) :-) The scent of the forest in September, the Chickadees hanging upside-down to peck at the bark of a Pine. The sunlight filtering through the multicolored leaves of the forest in front of me.
    9:11.......Now waitaminit.........I do like to have something for the pot at the end of the day, but it is not my overriding idea for being out in the woods. I don't really mind too much if I come home skunked, but if the trend goes on for too long, I tend to get faster and more aggressive in my hunting. Which ruins the whole idea of being out there.
    It has been 40 years since I have shot at or seen a Grouse. Too long a dry spell. But I now have tons of patience in comparison to when I was 19. I will either get a Grouse or more, or I will not. Such is life. But I will still enjoy my time in the Michigan woods. Haven't had a Birch fire in that many years, either. The smell of a Birch campfire...........so many memories.
    12:02.......Grouse ARE NOT beyond you; it's all in your head. Practice, practice, practice.............and more practice. You are young and have fine reflexes. It just takes time to get it right. You will always remember your first time that the bird succumbed to your ability. Keep on hunting!
    14:52......The look you have in your eyes.........brings a tear to mine. I have no one to share my time in the woods or anywhere else with. You are so fortunate. Be happy and share your times together well, for time marches on and will steal from him or her the best portion from them. I am so envious of you two. But I'm NOT going to get a tattoo!
    16:17.....Those of us that have lived in the woods and have left our hearts there,........we understand and shed a tear with you.
    As I'm doing now.

    Try some sporting clays , the sporting presentation of this form of clay targets should make you a better grouse shot...

    • @rogerbeckner6419
      @rogerbeckner6419 4 года назад

      It will help,.......but clay games are still calculated angles and lead distances. Being out in the woods and shooting there is the best practice. Unfortunately, we don't usually get enough shots in a season to help us. Another idea is a game farm with Chukars. Speedy little buzz-bombs.
