  • The first bird season with a dog are full of good and bad but all part of an incredible journey. This is Creative Director of Project Upland, A.J. DeRosa's first season with his Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. A roller-coaster of failures and victories that highlights our love for bird dogs.
"These fall days belong to him now. No longer can I call these cuts my own. The joy found at the silence of a bell and the rise of wings in a deafening forest is like a siren calling. And with the realization of how short their lives are it becomes even more impending. Time will reveal its unfair bargain between my best friend and me. But although I fear that day, you could never trade the now. Our memories together will live on, we will always have our first season."

I had to sent my GSP to dog heaven 3 years ago. He gave me 15 years of absolutely satisfaction. My First gun dog, trained by me. The best hunting dog in the world is your dog. That i absolutely agree with. He did everything I asked him to do and I picked up on things that he saw that my no else saw. Enjoy your time, there was never a dull moment and never regret anything. Live and enjoy your time to the fullest, even at 15 years old he hunted and found his last bird while battling with hip dysplasia. Named him Honza, which in Czech means God's Gift, and he sure was a gift from God.

Man this gives me hope I can get to experience 15 years with my pup. He's my first dog and the reason I'm hunting waterfowl now. His first season and mine with him at 2yo and a chocolate lab and what a trip its been training him the last year up to this season.

Training and finishing your own bird dog is an exercise in frustration, pulling your hair out and swear words. But it is easily out-shadowed by moments of triumph and success. Those moments make you forget about all the bad ones and makes it all worth while. It is one of the most rewarding things I've done in my life. Miss my Griff of 13 years. RIP Magoo

Great video bud. I lost my lab last winter in a horrible accident I don’t even want to explain. She would have been 3. Trained her from a pup. Could flush, retrieve good enough for me. As far as I was concerned she was the best ever. Field trial notta, but she was mine, and we worked well together. Many ducks and grouse downed together. I said I was done. Can’t handle losing another, but I’m reaching out to breeders right now. A Griffon has always been a dog I saw myself with someday. It’s gonna happen next year. My son is coming into his own to hunt. What better way to break my boy in to upland hunting than with his very own fury hunting buddy! Keep posting your journey, I’m inspired.

Just went through my first season with my small Munsterlander. Emotionally, I've gone through everything A.J. has. He will be 8 months old on Christmas Eve. We did a lot of training this year with pigeons and even managed to get into some public lands but alas, no wild bird contact as it must have been a tough spring for grouse. I finally sprung for a 12 bird hunt for chukars at a game farm and paid extra for a guide to help me with the dog. He pointed the birds out like a champ and my guns got 11 out of the 12. For 8 of the birds he was running free with no check cord. It was an amazing feeling seeing him work. I still have a lot of work ahead of me but, I've already got next season firmly in my sights.... thanks for such a thoughtful video!!!

Great video. Don’t fear the end, live for today and always hug your pup. I had to put mine down this year. Luckily we got a few birds in this season before I had to say goodbye. Bird dogs have an ability to leave an imprint on our lives and are never forgotten.

Pointing breeds are just the best period. I don't even care which breed out of that group is your favorite. They share so many characteristics which I hold in high regards. My family had DD (GWP), KlM (Small Muensterlaender), DL (GLP), and I had a weird pointing breed mix from Turkey who was to die for and so beautiful that random people came up to me on the regular to ask which breed she was. Cherish every day because they leave too damn early... but sometimes they seem to be guiding you to the next companion as esoteric as it may sound.

I rarely comment... but I must say this is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time, I’ve been looking for a WPG for a while, being a hunter and Veteran w/PTSD I was truly inspired to be willing to bite the bullet as it were and find a friend even if it means traveling further. There aren’t many breeders close to me in NW Texas. I’d just like to say thank you for the inspiration.

Well done. Our Griff is an Idaho native, had some great hunts in his early years, and carries the name of a fellow fighter pilot’s call sign who died far too soon. We had to move to Florida where there many great things - but bird Hunting is not on the list. We will always have his first season, and as erratic as it was, it will always be the best.

Delightful video. I just don't understand why folk don't finish their bird dog training? I appreciate that this is your first bird dog but a steady dog is only a little more work yet brings a GREAT deal of reward. It defines the owner/trainer. It supports safety. It contributes to better chances of retrieving a bird (via marking). It proves better opportunities on covey or multiple bird finds. It is a small leap for your dog but somehow has eroded to a huge leap in bird dog training - the human aspect. Keep accruing life's true gems - fond memories afield with a wonderful bird dog! And, thanks for sharing!

A lot of of the things you mentioned really hit home and kinda made me laugh a bit. I too also found myself frustrated at times and with too many questions and little answers. But it all worked out. She is the best gun dog I’ll ever own because she was my first and she is beautiful thing to watch in the field. Thanks for making great videos like these!!!

Bro, I have two Griffs. Angus is my pup at a year old from Autumn Rush Griifs in Iowa, and Ragnar my 3 year old. I love them both darn near as much as the two girls I share life with. I think my wife actually loves them more than me. I am a novice above novice when training these guys, but man I love to watch them get on birds. We hunt mainly over renegade quail and chukkar at a hunting preserve, but I ache to get in the grouse woods. Thank you for this film. I love all the work you do on the other films, but this one carries your heart.

This was season 3 with my first bird dog (French Brittany... Mojo) and all i can say is it only gets better. The dog learns you as you learn the dog, it creates a bond like no other and like no one but a bird dog owner/hunter can understand. My dog hunts in one manor when i have people with us and entirely different when it is just me and him. That feeling you get when the dog points never goes away. That proud love you feel as you see their excitement and enthusiasm for the hunt it will be what you remember for the rest of your life. My bird dog is my hunting partner, best friend and a part of my family. From this dog forward i will never be without a bird dog and a frenchie stole my heart as this Wire griff stole yours...... beautiful vid... beautiful dog ..... beautiful story...... MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT FROM A FELLOW BIRD MAN.....

I spent this season hunting over my first gun dog “Boone” a French Brittany, it was more than I ever could have dreamed of. Watching him learn his trade, grouse, quail, pheasant and chipmunks was priceless. I’m glad he chose me, but I was close to bringing a griff home as a friend was breeding them until recently. I really admire the way they bust the brush. I too have thought of that day in the future on occasion as he has slept in my lap, I just hug him and hope it is a long way off because this is about as good as I can imagine it gets. Thanks for a great video!

Our first a gsp pup which still needs training, but ended up getting a finished Drahthaar that is just over a year old which I have been able to get a couple hunts in with her and hope to get in another before the end of season. Grew up as a big game hunter, but there is just something about watching the dog work and the way the team/ bond develops. Success depends on each doing our part.

I lost a Gordon 2 years ago to snake bite and it was a hard one he was just 2 years old and had so much promise. Shortly before that a had a female gsp stolen...But on the bright side I have 2 GSP that are halfway into there first season and and doing fantastic.

Great video. Beautiful dog! Thanks for sharing. Were you able to pull all the quills from his nose and mouth? I had a similar experience this October with my pup. Hope it is just a one time thing, but I don't think it will be.

We were. One was a bit tricky but it worked out. He pointed a few over the season but this one ended bad. My error really I released him and had not seen the porcupine. Fingers crossed that he learned his lesson I know I did. haha

This Griffon was from Wildrums Kennel in Wisconsin which I believe now operates as Smokey Gold.

The Griffon, Drahthaar/Wirehaired Pointer, Weimaraner, Viszla, Münsterländer can all do the Job if properly trained

Beagle. I had a beagle that you could tell what he was chasing by the tone of his bark.

@@Ductdog I wouldn't want one around my house lol! They bay/bark/howl *constantly* and putting a collar to stop is cruel on them, in my opinion. They're great for squirrel, rabbit, bear, and others but I've never seen one great for upland/bird which this channel is focused.

Scott L we kept them outside & the neighbors called the cops because of the noise! Once inside they were ok but I know some never stop howling no matter what. Most chased pheasant & would howl like you were killing them when on rabbits it was a short choppy bark. I will admit I’ve moved on from beagles to labs & now I really like the wirehaired pointers.
