Custer was my hero. I visited the battlefield on the Crow Indian Reservation in southern Montana at the age of 10. I had a green metal garden trowel. My sister found a Sioux or Cheyenne bullet with three grooves on it at the rifle pits of Major Reno on the hill after heavy rainfall. It was gleaming in the sun.
That's quite a find. Had it been fired? My dad was a Civil War re-enactor and his weapon (forget the type) fired those same types of bullets. I always assumed that in this conflict where everyone was mobile, they'd be firing something lighter than that. I was there in 2002, it's well structured and the body positions are marked and they have a museum there now - not sure it was like in your time. I'm very glad I went, but I guarantee they wouldn't let you up there with a trowel these days!
heard this song on the radio as I was on my way to graveyard shift at a police department, in Oregon, where my lone patrol covered 200 square miles. It struck me to my soul.
Here is something you may be interested in, in 1873 The Dominion of Canada Government created the North West Mounted Police to cover over 1,000 miles of open Western Territory...they had less men then the entire. 7 th U.S. Cavalry to do it.. 350 men total..
I visited the Custer monument at the age of 10 on a trip from Saskatchewan to Montana. I was excited about my big sister finding a bullet with three grooves on it. The museum identified it from Major Reno's rifle pits as one moulded by the Sioux and Cheyenne near the field of battle. We kept it for 50 years before returning it .
You get locked up for fossicking on a National Military Park. The Feds take that shit seriously these days bro. Back in context and that being said very nice find and props to ya for the find and return.
As a fellow Canadian it is interesting that in your area, we almost had our own Little Big Horn didn't,t we. The Cree had captured a town, then withdrew ..the citizens demanded retribution ....So a mounted force under Lt. Colonel William D ( Dillion ) Otter prepared to charge a village ... Not only to find themselves outnumbered and surrounded like Custer, but the wrong village like Major Eugene Baker . The Battle of Cut Knife Hill 1885. An old man spotted them coming and warned the village... Otter trapped up on a hill would remain mounted with his men in a defence position... The only reason they survived...the Indians let them go We also had the Battle of Duck Lake ..with Major Crozier. The Battle of Batoche...British Canadian marching Parade ground style like Confederates at Gettysburg....with Native Warriors and Metis Allies well entrenched...until a frustrated Captain without orders called.for a bayonet charge to rout them.. British continued fighting Old School style against the Zulus in 1879..against Afghanistan and Boers in 1880,s- 1902.. So it wasn't just Custer it was the attitude of his times.. By the way Randolf McKenzie was correct better for him to have died on a battlefield instead of live and be sent to an Insane Asylum.... The way Tecumseh died instead of being betrayed by his own people stabbed in the back with a bayonet to face a long painful death, or shot in the back of the head like Sitting Bull by Indian Police .. Or Geronimo falling drunk one day and drowning in a puddle of water face down... I would take Custer,s death over these endings any day. Even Captain Benteen said The Indians should not have killed CUSTER, but taken him alive. They might have stripped him of all his clothes, tied him backwards to a Pony then parade him in front of the soldiers.. What is the loss of 5 companies of 226 men, at Little Big Horn...compared to 1,500 men the British lost in 1879 against the Zulus
He was a flawed, narcissistic glory seeker, but he was a hell of a man. Charged Jeb Stuart’s 4000 man Calvary with 600 troopers. Stopped him cold in his tracks and saved the union. “Come on you wolverines”.
In the movie "Little Big Man" they make him out to be a lunatic, fool. Hollywood. Narcissistic, pompous, jerk yes, but also one helluva fearless talented soldier (cavalryman). Its kind of like they say was George Patton a Narcissist or brilliant general? The answer would be ..YES.

Did you know the Custer actually served in Vietnam with the 7 th Cavalry 1st Armored Division ? Of course they don't mention that in Nel Gibson,s movie We Were Soldiers Colonel George Armstrong Custer III Served in WW II, KOREA, VIETNAM.. What was that Sgt Major about Custer being a Pussy ...Maybe you.d like to say that to Colonel Custer,s face ...
Respect?? Custer and his band of thugs slaughtered an entire encampment of hundreds of unarmed elderly, women, and children the day before he got his comeuppance in an attempt to draw the men out to surrender. What he got instead, was his ass handed to him. Custer was a murdering coward who got exactly what he deserved.
Sounds like somebody has been brainwashed by Hollywood……..it was not a massacre….read the action reports, and realize the native Americans have always shaded events to make themselves look better.
@@judymarlene3414 No brainwashing. I just think killing everyone and not taking prisoners is a massacre. What would you call it. And please enlighten me as to where I might find the after action report of the 7th cavalry?
The movie "Son of the Morningstar" was the best film ever on the tragedy of greasy grass, it was based on the book. This time, his dreams of being prez cost 268 lives. Gary Cole played Custer and was just grand
Interesting that in most movies about Custer, they skip other factors .. Never mention Crook being defeated a week earlier at the Battle of the Rosebud June 17 th 1876 his retreat back without telling anyone that he engaged the enemy ..or Terry- Gibbon Column was delayed by rain... Or the failure of Colonel Reynolds to take the Cheyenne Village at the Battle Of The Powder River March 17 th 1876 which tipped the Natives off of Government intentions ...
Custer never dreamed of becoming President. I've read books that both he and Libbie wrote, plus dozens of others. He was an Army man and discovered he didn't like politics when he campaigned for Gen. McClellan.
A little historical tidbit; the sabres were not carried in the engagment at Little Big Horn, if they had been and the 7th had still had their Spencer carbines and the Gatling guns it might have turned out differently, but who knows today.
I don't believe the 7 th Cavalry had Spencer Rifles, and if you wanted a Winchester Repeater it came out of your pocket, but Indians got them free.. Just like the controversy of today, President Biden pulls out of Afghanistan and leaves modern weapons for ISIS/ Taliban forces.. 7 th Cavalry used Trapdoor rifles...in the movie Son Of The Morning Star..you may recall Custer complaing to General Terry about the problem to which Terry cries out " What is the Army Trying To Do To Us " Give the Indians the best modern weapons , give the Cavalry rifles where the rounds get stuck in the barrel and have to be taken out by a bayonet...sitting target Custer was right to decline Gatling guns ... First they would be a problem to bring , even Major Reno mentioned how easily they tended to flip over... You were not travelling down a straight road but up through steeo hills, cross rivers , swamp area, heavy rain causes thick mud You required 2 Men ...one to fire the other to swing it back into place ..the Indians could easily have taken them out with arrows from a distance then turned the Gatling Guns on the 7 th Cavalry.. I think the British Martini Henry which fought the Zulus in 1879 was a better weapon than what 7 th carried in 1876
Custers closest friend and appointed Band master was Felix Vinatieri an Italian born Virtuoso conductor who is also the great great grandfather of hall of fame place kicker Adam Vinatieri
There were many Italian Americans in the Calvary…..although the great Irish and English were heavily represented ……my great grandfather emigrated from northern Italy in the early 1900s….Italian Americans were the largest ethic group to fight for the USA in WW2.
@@chimo1961 Better go read some history books Yes the massacre in Oklahoma was terrible I believe you were never in the military, or understand what the Govt wanted done in the that era Yes Tom Custer was a two time winner of the MOH Go do your homework!
Custer was a glory hungry fool who split his command into three. My respect and love is reserved for the men under his command who died fighting and for the native Americans who were fighting for their way of life.
As I understand it, General Custer actually had great respect for the Indian nations, but just like anything else, he would not let a thing like destroying them stand in the way of his Fame and career.
Overall it was not his call to make ...he did make Peace with the Cheyenne , it was General Sherman who over ruled . Lakota forget the main soldiers against them who would win in the end was not Custer it would be General Sherman and General Sheridan...the S.S of the Plains ... In the Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai, his character is telling the Commanding Officer this is the wrong village, these people had nothing to do with the raids.. This happened with The Baker Massacre not the Washita which was far worse.. In Son Of The Morning Star, Sheridan tells Custer, kill the warriors, capture the women and ponies ...Custer made it clear nit to kill women and children ...you can not control the Individuals ..Even Chief Black Kettle tried to say at one point.. We try to tell the younger ones but they won't listen...and do their own thing any ways ..Sound familiar ? In the Baker Massacre..Sheridan told him ...HIT THEM HARD..
Custer was clearly a brave, even brilliant calvary commander. Therefore Crazy Horse ranks among one of the greatest commanders of all time. The architect of the massacre of the 7th Cavalry.
Good point. Those obtuse individuals who claim Custer acted foolishly and made several mistakes at the Little Bighorn ignorantly invalidate the adroitness of Crazy Horse, and the fighting resolve of the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors who fought that day. "A great enemy, a greater victory"
I always felt Crazy Horse over rated...his fame came on the coat tails of the already famous Civil War Custer...without Custer no one would have heard of Crazy Horse...Fetterman was an unknown officer when massacred in December 1866 Great native commanders....Little Turtle of the Miami Tribe is responsible for the greatest U.S. Military defeat by a Native force against General Arthur St Clair 1790,s Battle of the WABASH..he did it being outnumbered and made Custer defeat look like a blood test while Little Turtle Victory like an Emergency Blood Transfusion ...American forces suffered 90 percent casualties . . The Battle of the Brule Ojibwe faced 700 Lakota invading their Territory...made it the equivalent of Dunkirk ... Handed the Lakota their Asses on a silver platter despite appearing small in force ... Tecumseh who created the Confederacy with his brother The Prophet...Shawnee.. The Seminoles ... Black Hawk War a young recruit named Abraham Lincoln serves elected as Captain ...though saw no action I would rather fight Crazy Horse any day compared to GALL Did you ever see the arms of that guy..he fought only with a hatchet bo gun. The Army over all was responsible for the defeats especially the Grant Administration ...he may have been honest but his Administration was one of the most Corrupt and Scandal until Trump became President
You want a Winchester comes out of your pocket...you want a wife comes out of your pocket... You want the Gatling guns you pay for the bullets .. They did not believe in target practice until 1880,s..thought it was a waste of money and ammunition
How come you never talk about the Canyon Massacre of August 1873 where the Lakota killed mostly women and children of the Pawnee Tribe. Or the Battle of Brule when Lakota were defeated handily by the Ojibwe..
Too bad they could not do a prequel...Custer movie of the Civil War, his experiences in New Orleans and Texas after the war. I always could see Country Singer Alan Jackson as Custer and Melissa Gilbert as Libbie
An overlooked factor of the Little Big Horn, in his vision when Sitting Bull told of Soldiers falling from the skies. I give these to you for they have no ears .. He also said...in the vision DO NOT TAKR ANY THING FROM DEAD...which the warriors did not listen either... Oh I'm the series they mention Custer child..which one .there was Captain ( Brevet Colonel Tom Custer who fathered 2 children One was named Tommy, by a white woman...the other Yellow Feather mother was Native In the series they claim Custer had a baby girl named Yellow Feather with blonde hair.. who died in infancy Actually Yellow Feather looked Indian with black hair who lived into teens or 20,s Tommy only lived to be 20.. Besides the horse Comanche, a 7 th Cavalry grey horse reached Canada...those from Saskatchewan may be familiar with Major ( Militia Brevet Rank) James Morrow Walsh of the North West Mounted Police...who reported it to Washington wanting to know if they wanted him back, though admitted being fond of it..Let Major Walsh keep the Horse whom he named CUSTER...
Funny that Mckenzie who defeated the commanche is not remembered at all. But then he did not die in battle but just faded away. This idiot get himself and his men killed and he is famous.
Major Marcus Reno.. note about Reno he was graduating from West Point in 1857 June Custer arrived West Point July 1857... Had No Experience in Warfare against Natives Captain Fredrick Benteen... was actually a Virginian who defied his family to stay and fight for the Union instead of joining the Confederates like the rest. I hope a Confederate Bullet kills you his father told him On one occasion Benteen unit captured his father and kept him in prison to keep the old man safe during the Civil War I believe Benteen despised both Custer and Reno because they both attended the U.S. Military Academy West Point and he may have been one of thousands who aspired but we're rejected ...too many applicants to so many Congressmen allowed. Benteen may have hated Custer because Custer was in the Eastern Theatre which gained more attention ...compared to the Western where Be teen served... When Grant came to the Eastern many thought Bobby Lee would make short work of him Myles Keough...served on General Buford Staff at Gettysburg...shame he couldn't be mentioned in the movie...he also fought in Italy with Garibaldi .. The RED SHIRTS...so Custer sporting s red scarf was not unusual... Captain Thomas Ward Custer... one of the few men to be awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor...the interesting thing about him he could grab live rattlesnakes by his bare hands. He used to keep them in a wicker basket in his tent ...still alive .. He had ,2 illegitimate sons...never married. He was the one who really got smashed to pieces by Gall..the only way to identify him was his Tattoo T.W.C. Captain James Jimmy Calhoun who married Margaret Custer was leaped up from a Sergeant to an officer through Custer...General Terry No Experience against Native Warriors . Adjutant William Winer Cooke. W.W. Cooke who sent last message was a Canadian born in Hamilton, Ontario..Joined the 5 th New York Cavalry at the start of the Civil War because he had an Uncle there..he was the real Queens Own
I think the foortage is from the 1991 "Son of the Morning Star" - a few bits from the offical release with what looks like a lot of out takes - the song was not part of the soundtrack IIRC.
One thing I noticed with this clip, Custer salutes and W.W. Cooke returns the salute...actually should be the other way around .. Cooke salutes him..he returns the Salute. Do Americans really salute officers in the field ? Good way to let the enemy know who the leaders are to pick them off..
I too thank them. The weak will always get conquered by the strong. Always have always will. From the dawn of the human race until it’s dying breath it will remain. stay strong.
Many Indian Scouts and tribes fought for the U.S. The Aztecs lost because they had many enemies in western Mexico. The spanish only had 150 men and were backed by the western tribes. Karma can be in effect here.
Not true. There is more to life than ‘might makes right’. That was the motto of the warring Indian tribes for centuries. And of humanity in the raw the world over. You need some might, or you can not survive, but there is a better way. I support the USA for its successful bringing of civilization to the Plains. It was imperfect, but what human project is not? One last thing; if Custer and his men pulled even a quarter of the stunts the Indians pulled in their raids, they would be excoriated as monsters. Which would be right. Men are basically the same the world over, but their ideas are not. The USA had a better idea. When they did not follow it, they were worse in one thing, and one thing only. They were worse because it was their business to be better.
Actually no an Arrow never touched him in the fight and he did not commit suicide either... Funny how those who never saw military service can make jokes about those that did.
Dividing the Regiment actually gave the others time to build a strong Defense Position ..digging trenches, getting organized, the arrival of the wagons , supplies, bags helped ...if Indians went after the hilltop ss the same time as the Custer fight..they probably woukd not have had time to build a defense at all.

It also helps where the units don't cooperate with each other, no real commander overall.. defective weapons given to the Army... Keep in mind soldiers of the U.S. Cavalry were not as well trained as Native Warriors who were brought up on warfare since they were children. Compare them to the Spartans who whipped their children and parents saying Don't Dare Cry...Don't Cry... One tribe would pierce the breast of a potential warrior and leave him hanging for 3 days.. Hannibal was outnumbered by the Roman but told his troops ..we will win because the Romans are soft, lazy, while we are strong ...imagine going through the Alps, across the swamps, just to face an enemy who outnumbers you... Today I think ISIS or Taliban are tougher warriors than the U.S. trained military they just don't have the money or technology unless you leave it for then. Thank you President Biden for the gift Thank you U.S. Government for the Spencer and Winchester repeating rifles while giving your troops defective Trapdoors .. British Martini Henry's were better... Thank you General Crook for engaging the enemy and deciding to go Fly Cast Fishing instead of reporting your encounter with the Indians on June 17 th 1876
All due respect to my hero Custer... IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO NEED BIGGER REGIMENT... Having the 2 ND Cavalry along would not have changed the results ..If Life is predestined as I believe it was already written that event would happen regardless of whether Custer was there.. Just as the Native population had many chances to prevent the present situation they called A Land Steal... Land was not Stolen from them, it was TAKEN IN TRIBAL WARFARE..just as Lakota drove out others from the Black Hills and tried to steal land from other tribes...The Battle of the Brule against the Ojibwe kicked their Asses...the Sioux underestimated them .. The Iroquois Confederacy was stronger than the Lakota alliance

Custer..."Captain Benteen to the front! You will take your battalion and divert to a left oblique about 45 degrees; sweep everything you see in front of you, pitch into anything you come across." Benteen..."Shouldn't we keep the regiment together, General? If this camp is as big as they say it is, we'll need every man we've got." Custer..."You have your orders." Benteen..."General, I'm not clear about this. How much of an area to you want me to scout?" Custer..."You heard me Captain, now sweep the area!" Benteen..."Battalion, left oblique!" The rest is history
Michael Hart: This quote is from the film, whether or not these words were actually spoken is a matter of conjecture. The only individual who actually heard Benteen say, "Shouldn't we keep the regiment together, General? If this camp is as big as they say it is, we'll need every man we've got." was one Private Theodore W. Goldin. Goldin, who lived all the way until 1935, was known for his drama and embellishments. Because of his political associations in later years, he was able to receive the Medal of Honor, even though he really didn't do anything extraordinary at the Little Bighorn to merit the award. What is more, Goldin even managed to receive a pension for his MOH. Also, at the Little Bighorn, Goldin said he ran a last message from Custer to Major Reno. If there was a letter, it was never found, nor did Major Reno acknowledge receiving one. In any event, as I mentioned, the source for Benteen's statement to Custer about keeping the 'regiment together' came from Private Goldin; as such, it probably should be taken with a grain of salt.
@@Eadbhard Interesting. I never heard any of that. Thanks. The letter, is that the bring packs come quick letter? Because I thought that was Martini. Or was that to Benteen? Been a while, can't remember.
@@nicholasmuro1742 You are correct. Custer sent a written order to Captain Benteen - the famous ""Benteen, come on, Be Quick, big village..." message. This message was delivered to Benteen by Private Giovanni (John) Martini. Before he sent Martini, Custer also sent Sergeant Daniel Kanipe to deliver instructions to Captain McDougal, the officer in charge of the pack train. The purported message Custer sent to Major Reno, according to the soldier who delivered it (Private Goldin), said something along the lines of, "Reno, keep them occupied. We'll be hitting them from behind". While this makes sense, there is no proof that such a transaction ever occurred. Private Goldin said he delivered it, but Major Reno said he never received such a message. Unfortunately, both Goldin and Reno are unreliable narrators.
@@Eadbhard Ok. Thanks. I never heard of the Reno message. Like you said, Reno was unreliable, so who knows. Everyone trying to cover their @$$es after the disaster. Edit: the thing that gets me is how Custer was painted as a lunatic by Hollywood over the years. Everything I've read is the opposite. He led from the front. Like all cavalry men. Custer is still the youngest General is US history I believe. He can't be that incompetent. But if a COs subordinates don't follow orders, he's screwed.
@@nicholasmuro1742 Correct again. George Armstrong Custer is one of the most misaligned, misunderstood figures in American history. The man had his faults, certainly, but when it came to fighting, Custer was in his element; the man was born for battle. As you well noted, most historians and scholars place Custer in a better light than the clowns in Hollywood, primarily because historians and scholars know their facts. The same can be said about most people. Most people don't read or research; as such, their thoughts about Custer derive from woefully inaccurate movies, factless opinions, as well as personal and media biases. The condemnation of Custer predominately began in the 1960's, during the Civil Rights movement. The American Indian Movement (AIM) needed a fall guy, they were looking for a scapegoat, some individual who symbolized everything evil the white man had ever done to the Native American. Their choice was Custer, not because Custer was particularly hateful and contemptuous toward the Native American, but because he was famous; the whole world was familiar with the name of General George Armstrong Custer. In any event, AIM started it all, and most everyone jumped on their band wagon. As a result, from the '60's all the way to the present, the name "Custer" has been associated with mass genocide, foolhardiness, incompetence, rape, and the wanton slaughter of women and children. It's all wrong, of course, but as I mentioned previously, most people don't bother reading the books. As the old saying goes, "The less people know, the more they will always suspect".
True, but then again when the created the 7 th Cavalry in 1866.. Sheridan jumped hom ahead of more Senior officers... When the war ended he went back to being a Regular force Captain in the 2nd Cavalry...being s Brevet Major General still had advantages ... Just as you in the U.S address Trump as President Trump he is NOT PRESIDENT...Joe Biden is the President of the U.S. If it is an address in your system to be given to a former President Then Custer was or should be addressed by his higher rank as Major General Custer... Reno was a brevet Brigadier General...another thing that probably pissed off Benteen..during the Civil War he was recommended for promotion to General...again overlooked...he did finally get it after his retirement Benteen could have been a higher rank than Custer but prejudice prevailed in those days ..full Colonel in a Black Cavalry Regiment but he turned it down to be a Captain in the 7 th Cavalry...oh yes Benteen ended his military career as a Major in a Black Infantry Regiment 😂 Being an officer in a Black Cavalry unit didn't hurt Pershing in his career

In the scene of Custer charging the Washita Village is just as inaccurate as Mel Gibson,s Braveheart when English and Scots charge each other long distance. You would exhaust the men and horses.. Custer instead attacked by jumping over the banks of the Canadian River. According to then Chief of Scouts Ben Clark... Custer would not let anyone ride ahead of him First man into the breach. As for John Mosby the Confederates started it When they attacked a Federal wagon they thought was easy pickings but Union Cavalry arrived nearly surrounding them, in the event it was believed one of .Mosby,s Rangers shot a man in the head who was in the act of surrendering before union Cavalry arrived. For this Major General Phil Sheridan ordered Custer to hang any of Mosby .men Not until there was an understanding between them by exchanged letters did the Executions cease. For the sake of argument if there were orders for all 3 to meet up on June 27 th ...then General Crook would also have disobeyed orders when he retreated after the Battle of The Rosebud on June 17 th 1876 Imagine Blucher after being defeated by Napoleon saying ...We did our bit we are going back to Prussia..Wellington is in his own
Yes they would...after defeating the largest contingent under General Crook a week earlier stopping for Coffee Break...Do you honestly think if they found Custer,s men setting up tents miles away they would not surround them and wipe out the entire 7 th Cavalry if he did nothing but wait for the arrival of General Terry.. Who knows Crook may have saved the day by advance march forward instead of back... How long would it take to travel from the Rosebud Battlefield to the Little Big Horn Battle field ? 1-3 days..
No Donald Trump is not the reincarnation of Custer, I thought more along the lines of Andrew Jackson, Santa Anna, or George S. Patton .. Trump like Patton came from a wealthy family, his father Frank kept bailing him out, he did not serve in the military though there is no reason he could not have done what George W Bush did just join the National Guard. Jackson, Custer, Santa Anna Patton all saw action

I think the black servants roles were as a result of Olivia de Havilland giving extra work to former Gone With the Wind cast members
If you’re going into enemy territory and you’re making a defensive stand why would you leave your heavy firepower behind. You had Gatling guns and you left them behind because they slowed you down.
Dom510 Custer believed that the 7th cavalry could defeat any foe no matter what the numbers were. He and over 200 of his men paid for his arrogance with there lives. He was warned that there were thousands of indians in the camp and that he would need the gatling guns but he didn't want to share the glory with anyone. Custer was not a General at the end of his life at the little big horn and he was ordered to not attack the village but wait and monitor it until General Terry showed up and General cook from the south but he disobeyed orders and that was the the end for him 🙄 😴 😳
Actually, the Terry column had no idea of where the Crook Column was. In fact, General Crook had lost his nerve after fighting to standoff at the Battle of the Rosebud 8 days prior to the Little Bighorn. Crook's column was the largest of the three, with about 1200 soldiers and around 300 Indian Allies. Crook retreated to a safe place, and spent the entire summer fishing. Crook made no attempt to send messengers to the Terry and Gibbon columns, warning them that there were many more hostile Indians than expected. Custer's written orders have survived; Terry told Custer that he had full confidence in Custer's ability, and to do as he saw fit. Custer was supposed to meet Terry and Gibbons at the junction of the Big Horn and Little Big Horn on Monday, but they arrived a day late on Tuesday. It is certain that the hostiles would have discovered Custer's troops on Sunday or Monday, and would have attacked Custer, losing the element of surprise that Custer thought he had. Terry was more a standard by the book who had his troops moving slowly, making a lot of noise, and stirring up dusk clouds that would be spotted long before the army reached the village. On Tuesday, the Indians spotted the army column approaching, and fled avoiding another battle. In the end, Custer made an justifiable decision, but his luck ran out. Had Custer crossed the river, and captured captives, he might have won a big victory. Had there been 800-1000 braves instead of 2,000-4,000 estimated, Custer may have won. In war, soldiers die. Custer cheated death for 15 years. Riding at the head of his regiment, and drawing attention to himself with his red scrarf during the Civil War, by all odds, Custer should not have lived to its end,
Actually cook had been attacked by none other then crazy horse before custer's battle, it's why he never showed up cuz of casualties and did not progress to the little big horn
If Crook has pulled that stunt of retreating and not bothering to inform the others he engaged the enemy during the Civil War he would have been Court Martialed
After defeating the largest contingent of the three mobilized, Do you seriously think the Native Alliances would have spoken Peace if Custer used this approach again, considering the last time he was reprimanded by General Sherman... Considering the situation of the Battle of the Rosebud a week prior on June 17 th 1876 when General Crook halted his march for Coffee Break. Do you really believe the Allies would not gave attacked Custer,s camp
They said the same thing about General George Washington...he actually lost more battles than he won with 1 draw and fell for the same British trap 3 times.. He didn't do well against the French that started the. French and Indian War...really bad st building a Fort location ... Fort Necessity....signed a document in French confessing to assassinating a French Ambassador not wanting to let on he did not know French as all Gentlemen were suppose to know
During the scene portrayed here, Custer was a Lieutenant Colonel, not a temporary Civil War general officer. More importantly, he was a terrible officer, a vainglorious fool, who graduated last in his USMA class. His leadership, professional acumen, tactical competence and concern for his men was reprehensible. During my senior war college year at Fort McNair, I reviewed many of his decisions and actions during his relatively brief Army career; they were consistently substandard. This officer should not be lauded.

Thank you for your service, first responders are modern cavalry

on a trip from Saskatchewan to Montana.
The only reason they survived...the Indians let them go
We also had the Battle of Duck Lake ..with Major Crozier.

McClellan.
Garryowen was an Irish drinking song from County Limerick👍
A little historical tidbit; the sabres were not carried in the engagment at Little Big Horn, if they had been and the 7th had still had their Spencer carbines and the Gatling guns it might have turned out differently, but who knows today.
I don't believe the 7 th Cavalry had Spencer Rifles, and if you wanted a Winchester Repeater it came out of your pocket, but Indians got them free..
Just like the controversy of today, President Biden pulls out of Afghanistan and leaves modern weapons for ISIS/ Taliban forces..
7 th Cavalry used Trapdoor rifles...in the movie Son Of The Morning Star..you may recall Custer complaing to General Terry about the problem to which Terry cries out
" What is the Army Trying To Do To Us "
Give the Indians the best modern weapons , give the Cavalry rifles where the rounds get stuck in the barrel and have to be taken out by a bayonet...sitting target
Custer was right to decline Gatling guns ...
First they would be a problem to bring , even Major Reno mentioned how easily they tended to flip over...
You were not travelling down a straight road but up through steeo hills, cross rivers , swamp area, heavy rain causes thick mud
You required 2 Men ...one to fire the other to swing it back into place ..the Indians could easily have taken them out with arrows from a distance then turned the Gatling Guns on the 7 th Cavalry..
I think the British Martini Henry which fought the Zulus in 1879 was a better weapon than what 7 th carried in 1876

As Errol Flynn said in They Died With Their Boots On,"You can take GLORY with you." Hw true.😊
Custer..."Captain Benteen to the front! You will take your battalion and divert to a left oblique about 45 degrees; sweep everything you see in front of you, pitch into anything you come across."
Benteen..."Shouldn't we keep the regiment together, General? If this camp is as big as they say it is, we'll need every man we've got."
Custer..."You have your orders."
Benteen..."General, I'm not clear about this. How much of an area to you want me to scout?"
Custer..."You heard me Captain, now sweep the area!"
Benteen..."Battalion, left oblique!" The rest is history
@@Eadbhard
Interesting.
@@Eadbhard
Ok.
Custer was a LT C in the indian war ☺
He held a brevet rank, which means he can be called by that rank but held the pay rate of a Lt Col.
If it is an address in your system to be given to a former President
Then Custer was or should be addressed by his higher rank as Major General Custer...
Reno was a brevet Brigadier General...another thing that probably pissed off Benteen..during the Civil War he was recommended for promotion to General...again overlooked...he did finally get it after his retirement
Benteen could have been a higher rank than Custer but prejudice prevailed in those days ..full Colonel in a Black Cavalry Regiment but he turned it down to be a Captain in the 7 th Cavalry...oh yes Benteen ended his military career as a Major in a Black Infantry Regiment 😂
Being an officer in a Black Cavalry unit didn't hurt Pershing in his career
Yes, and after the Civil War, the soldiers called each other by the highest rank held during the war as a courtesy.

As for John Mosby the Confederates started it
When they attacked a Federal wagon they thought was easy pickings but Union Cavalry arrived nearly surrounding them, in the event it was believed one of .Mosby,s Rangers shot a man in the head who was in the act of surrendering before union Cavalry arrived.
For this Major General Phil Sheridan ordered Custer to hang any of Mosby .men
Not until there was an understanding between them by exchanged letters did the Executions cease.
Sheridan ordered the hanging
Sheridan ordered the Washita Village attack
Sheridan ordered the Baker massacre on Blackfoot Village in Montana, far worse than the Washita.

The Lakota claim the greatest victory over the U.S. military but it was actually Little Turtle without Allies who defeated General Arthur St. Clair at the Battle of Wasbash..in 1790,s.
Despite being outnumbered...Little Turtle of the Miami Tribe victory was a blood emergency transfusion compared to Lakota ..Little Big Horn Blood test in 1876..
Battle of the Brule was the Sioux version of Dunkirk when 700 warriors in canoes planned to invade Chippewa Territory. The majority never even made it out of their canoes when cut down by Chippewa arrows...
The greatest victory for 1876 is when your Allies surprised General George Crook while he rested his men for coffee break at the Battle of the Rosebud River June 17 th 1876 a week before Custer
Crook had the largest contingent of the three sent ...Cavalry, Infantry, Native Scouts.. Howitzers...instead of pressing forward he retreated back to Goose Creek, now Sheridan, Wyoming ...never told the others..The Army did not cooperate with each other in 1876..
However without Allies the Lakota were defeated by Custer in 1873 The Battle of the Yellowstone ..

I doubt the Bacon family had Black Servants in Monroe, Michigan ...
It was Daniel Bacon, not Samuel Bacon...
Libbie was not living at home when Custer was at West Point ...

After defeating the largest contingent of the three mobilized,
Do you seriously think the Native Alliances would have spoken Peace if Custer used this approach again, considering the last time he was reprimanded by General Sherman...
Considering the situation of the Battle of the Rosebud a week prior on June 17 th 1876 when General Crook halted his march for Coffee Break.
Do you really believe the Allies would not gave attacked Custer,s camp
Custer was given free range from General Terry, Crook is the one who killed them by not relaying information of June 17 th 1876 encounter
He was an excellent and brave warrior, but man he was a terrible tactician!
