Yea other than that you didn’t really didn’t miss anything. She is described as having pale skin and red hair, but again the argument I made is that she is a Jötun, a shapeshifter, they don’t have a single form. There’s also an old term, “moors”, used for black nobles. They were highly respected during medieval times because they were rich. You can find lots of paintings of moors. So it’s not WRONG to have a dark toned person walking around in Northern Europe at that time. Honestly, as long as it’s a good story I don’t care. Like you, I don’t notice race unless someone else points it out. It’s not the first thing that comes to my mind. I kinda like it actually. She’s beautiful, which is kinda accurate to the mythology, and I think it’s a really good change that they made. I think when the game comes out and people get involved with the story people won’t care about the color of her skin anymore.

Just curious, I'm creating a story that includes the Egyptian gods. I've described them as being fair/pale skinned. Would this be inappropriate. Divinity has been traditionally seen by most cultures as being being bright, white, etc. Its sort of the opposite of the god of war problem. There weren't really any black people in ancient Scandinavia nor were there really bright almost pale skinned people in ancient egypt. What are your thought?

      @alienz8641 Год назад +15

@@dococ3272 I don’t think “noble” would be the right word to use when describing Odin in the myths. There is literally a story in Norse Mythology where Odin gains and exploits the trust of a giantess named Gunnlöd, sleeping with her for three nights to steal the Mead of Poetry guarded by her.
In that same story, he also tricks a group of otherwise innocent giants into accidentally killing each other with scythes by throwing a whetstone into the air.
I agree that the design for Odin in GOW was kind of underwhelming, but it kind of makes sense given his status as a trickster god in the original myths. (IE Intentionally hiding his true power to deceive his enemies).
Besides, a lot of modern mythology-inspired fantasies like the MCU for instance, seem to forget that in addition to being a king and a warrior, Odin was also very much a trickster and a con-man who would lie, cheat, and kill to further his goals.

Now don't get me wrong here, I have no issues with Thor's big belly, but this whole strongmen argument people keep referring to dosen't really apply to Thor. Actual strongmen are built from head to toe, not just their bellies. If he was meant to be like an actual strongman, his whole body would be bigger, not just his stomach. And again, I don't have a problem with his appearance. Baldur was as skinny as a street cat and he knocked out the World Serpent in 3 hits. Appearance clearly does not dictate strength in God of War, I just don't understand people comparing Thor to actual strongmen.

The bracelets; they are supposed to be iron bracers that allow him to use his hammer. Most Vikings even refer to bracers as gauntlets, but in his story actually says “Iron Bracelets”.
His appearance; Thor is described as having “Blood red eyes” and “red hair” and is actually depicted as “Ugly” being compared to a boar.

      --
*This is ignoring that I didn’t say anything about her. And was only talking about Thor.* But since it was an ordeal, let’s talk about her because she is way off of her actual depictions in actuality. So let’s get down to the facts here.
      A lot of depictions of her are untold on her true appearance, due to her being a giant, though this is in my own research and I could’ve just found mostly bad sources, but if were being real here she is most often described with these traits, Most of which are in paintings or books;
*Giantess and Late Wife of Loki, Angrboda, furthermore known as 'the harbinger/bringer of grief' or a ‘mother of monsters’ and had been depicted or described as having bright yet dull reddish hair to interpret that of dried blood, a tall yet masculine physique due to her giant heritage, and bright pale skin.*
This is the best depiction possible of a basic overall description, Vikings didn’t have a lot of people of darker skin tones in they’re mix because at that time, they just didn’t cross race gaps in terms of meeting new races. If you weren’t them, most likely the only long shaft you’d see was a sword. Not to mention the climates and area’s they lived in didn’t allow much of them to get a tanned complexion. An average description of a Viking being a man/woman of Pale complexions, Lighter hair shading(Normally Red/Blonde/or sometimes Brunette), with mostly Blueish Green/or Brown eyes.
At this point in time, while they would force themselves upon women when theyd invade, they wouldn’t just come back for those women, they’d leave and never come back, or worse, kill the woman after forcing themselves on them.

If we came in and white washed all of the African or Egyptian gods, obviously there would be problems. Now I’m not accounting for the white people who don’t belong to Norse heritages, as they’re just doing it mostly to combat it.
But that’s the exact problem, if it’s not your heritage, why do you have the right to rewrite it in a literal sense. But given it’s a game, I couldn’t give a shit less....which is why I avoided bringing her up in the first place.

Mythology is in some cases a lot more realistic than modern media in those ways: it gives an accurate representation of what was accepted in culture and in history. The Greek Gods were all very gorgeous, save the few black sheep in the herd, but they were all depicted with smaller endowments because it was a sign of wisdom in Ancient Greek society. I still hear people write that off that it was just made up to make people feel better about themselves, and it's so nice to see modern media taking a shift towards a more "realistic" depiction of characters who are based on an existing idea or character.

I think my only "problem" with Thor's design is definitely the lack of body hair. I always kind of imagined that he'd have hair on his gut and chest, bit I guess it is entirely plausible that he'd be smooth-bellied. Still, I feel like it would look better with just a little bit of hair.
Edit: *Alright this one's for my new acquaintance the IrishguyfromIreland, written in big bold letters because they need it: I DO NOT hate the design. I hardly even CARE about the design. I said I personally felt like I would like it more if he had a small amount of body hair on his gut and chest. Even then, my opinion on it has changed as I've grown to like his design after playing the game and when some people pointed out how difficult it would be to pull off. I never even once implied that I hated the design, just that it was different to what I imagined. I certainly never said that MY OPINION was the be-all and end-all and that "everyone else is wrong and should hate the game because this was slightly different to what I assumed Thor would look like", so I don't understand why some people are treating it like I said that. I even said that it would be "entirely plausible" for him to be a clean-shaven boi and never even said that it was a bad decision/it didn't make sense. The fact that I need to elaborate so deeply on this is genuinely disheartening. I just don't want to delete my comment because of a few, for search of a better word, dumbasses getting salty over it.*

I looked up why the strongest men have guts, and from some quick research the answer (in bodybuilding at least) seems to be that:
1.) In order to lift heavy things, you need the weight to do that. "Weight lifts weight" is the exact quote I saw.
2.) The way calories work is they either get turned into muscle or fat. If the body uses the calories, it gets turned into muscle, and whatever is leftover gets turned into fat. Muscle and strength building requires a HUGE caloric intake, and the tradeoff for being the strongest is not all those calories are going to be used. And men tend to store their fat in their guts.
So, being lean does not mean you will be at your strongest, but being at your strongest does not mean you will be at your healthiest.
I could be wrong because this was just a quick google, so if I said something you know to be wrong or would like to elaborate, please do!

No calorie builds the size of muscle and protein feeds the muscles power. Bodybuilders tend to do what weightlifters do and bulk like crazy (to an extent that is very unhealthy) and then they burn off the calories so that their muscles are more visible. It’s mostly for the sake of bigger more defined muscles but also keep in mind bodybuilders also starve and dehydrate themselves for the lowest possible body fat percentage to look as ripped as possible.
Weight lifters like Thor (an actual weight lifter not the god, which is very ironic) just consume as much calorie and proteins as they can fit into their day while lifting like crazy. They’re definitely a league of their own. They’re a lot stronger then body builders (who in their own right are a lot stronger than you and I) minus a few exceptions like Ronnie Coleman who was ridiculously strong for a body builder.
Weight lifters tend to focus on big muscles but also stronger muscles, the bigger the muscle the more strength can be fit into it. Bodybuilders eat a lot for this reason but they don’t focus on lifting as heavy things as weight lifters do
TLDR: calories is used to make the muscles bigger and protein is used to make the muscles stronger. This is why they eat so much. They do the same things but body builders and weight lifters focus on different things: *bodybuilders work on hypertrophy focusing on aesthetic whereas weight lifters focus on strength and endurance training*

On the Thor stuff: Think, people! A Norse god with Greek physique?
On the Angrboda stuff: I think Greg Kasavin from supergiant games made a point about the Olympians in Hades. While these deities are worshiped by Greek people, they don't have to be Greek in appearance (hence, Asian Hermes). I can see the same thing with Angrboda too. On the other hand there it was more plausible, since Greek gods are often inspired by, or even taken from middle eastern cultures and pantheons. Just adding my opinion to the topic on hand.

Oooo reaction on my comment to answer for my own foolishness. By that I mean I didn't understand why youtube is bombarding me with answers on my answer on a comment I made, until I realized: Wait a minute... that is my comment and my discussion I started. So sorry! If I made anyone peeved or angry by it.
Now to the point: Hades is one of my favorite games. And I don't really like rogue likes/lites whatever they are called. Never noticed how not Greek looking some of the Olympians were, because well most of the first roster (yes I played it THAT early) looked, well Greek enough. Athena and Ares having more of that bronze shade did fit with them well, both were deities of two aspects of war: the order was Athena, the chaotic was Ares. And the others, well Zeus looked Greek enough, Poseidon looked Greek enough. Aphrodite looked hot... I mean Greek enough etc. So when the question of "creole Athena" popped out, Kasavin gave that answer. I just used that answer for Angrboda. Thinking back I should have been less "forgiving" with "On the other hand there it was more plausible..." sentence. What I wanted to say was Norse people were ethnically more homogeneous so of course their view of the deities were closer to their looks. Greeks on the other hand were like the first melting pot in that way (and Rome was on another level too). Greek myths took inspiration from a lot of middle eastern sources too. Mainly in their mid to later era myths. Chaos, Nyx, Thanatos and the others, the more ethereal concepts (less patriarchal, more nature based) were the basic local beliefs. Dionysus, Aphrodire, Demeter/Persephone in a way even Hades as a chthonic diety, were later concepts and imports (have to admit, when I learned about this, was way back, and this is becoming too long to talk about it and how much of a melting pot ancient Greece was politically, so no, I'm not justifying it here, we can have this debate in the next one, if it is cool). So I took Kasavin's explanation as a fairly logical one. Could that be used on Norse myths? Doubtful! But I like the comment about growing a pair for either the artists and consumers. But sadly here I will have to reference Greek myths again, with their legitimization and all. Myths are a free for all in interpretation and inserting ideological views. Artists put in their views (political, ideological, diversity or just personal) into their art, while viewers will do the same and reinterpret it either in a positive or a negative way. And the internet gives the metaphorical soap box to everyone, who wants to be offended, or a closed "court" for those who want to debate. Let's just hope I've not made a soap box stand or an echo chamber here. Cheers.

@@xavierescano4559 This is definitely how he's depicted in mythology, the fuck? Just do your research. Dude eats multiple goats during feasts, drinks an ocean and people say he has quite an appetite. Thor would be fat. That's accurate.

The way Thor was described in God of War this was the exact look I expected of him. Strong as an ox but clearly a drunken, slovenly brute

A year late but I didn't even know there was controversy around the designs. I love all the designs so far

Thor's design was set up throughout the previous game through the stories. Their strength comes more from the fact they are gods rather than what they look like. Balder for example rivals Kratos in strength at times, but is much smaller. It's not a matter of what they look like. Meanwhile Thor is set up to be lazy, overindulgent, fat, etc. So it's a matter of lifestyle choices I think.
Angrboda's design on the other hand was deliberately chosen for diversity. Which I guess is fine if it makes sense in context. Are the rest of her jötnar kind of the same complexion? Is it a guise she has taken to hide her jötnar identity? Is she perhaps half-jötun, half-human (her jötun parent fleeing to a faraway realm to escape the Æsir and having a child with a partner there)? The last one in particular would fit the whole setting her up as Atreus' love interest as they would have the "child of two worlds" aspect to bond over.
Guess I'll just wait until I can get my hands on the game before making a proper judgement.

My take on it is the jotun are shown to have either body manipulation or no shared body types. they can be big or small or animals or people etc. Like the jotun weve seen are a giant ass snake thats blue, a giant man that was huge and slightly tan, a normal looking woman, a normal looking boy, and with the new trailer a giant black wolf. So yeah a normal dark girl fits

Well one of the Jotnar is literally a mountain sized serpent so I don't think a black girl is too far outside the possibility of their looks

I feel that diversity isn't that bad (for remakes of characters) unless their race/sex/ect is important to that character. So Angrboda being black is fine. If anything it gives us black people more fictional characters to relate with

@@TheDudeFrom2077 You don't really understand how little diversity there is in media. There shouldn't need to be a reason to have a black character in media, there should just be one like with white people. It doesn't hurt anyone

@@TheDudeFrom2077 Why can't game creators have fun anymore? If they want to change the race of a character which will have 0 change to the story go for it. There is already many inconsistinties in this games mythology so who cares
