I did already buy this lens. The extra range with the 70mm is what I need. I get alot of candid photos that aren't always close of my family. This is the only camera I believe that has the image stabilization, especially in this price range. I figured this would help alot with my photos and require less lens changes when I'm out and about with my a6400
The Sony 18-105 with OSS is my go-to all-around lens with the a6400. I was considering the 17-70 especially with the F2.8 aperture but I'm concerned about Tamron's VC stabilization. Do you use it to shoot videos? If the result is the same as in Terry's sample footage, maybe the 17-70 would be a no-go for me. Cheers.
@@randkjournali've sold 18-105 and bought 18-135. Despite variable aperture i find it better lens for photos. Zooming is faster and it's not resetting to 18mm. Extra reach is also great.
@@wojciechkanclerski I came across a relatively inexpensive used Sony Zeiss 16-70 F4 so I went with this instead. The biggest plus with this lens is the small form-factor which has really become a big consideration for me lately especially for traveling - keeping the gear lighter and more compact. At 16mm, I get extra room at the wide end which helps offset the cropping when shooting video in 4K. I do miss the extra reach but I've learned to rely on Clear Image Zoom when necessary. For photos, I was pleasantly surprised how sharp it is (at least sharp enough for me) - which is contrary to most of the things I've read about this lens. Only drawbacks - it appears a little sluggish on autofocus and, this is not a lens to be used under bad weather conditions.
You can get a wrist strap for those days when people come by and slap your camera out of your hands but when that happens I suspect there's other issues at hand.
I only have 2 lenses in my camera bag for my a6400. The Sigma 56mm f1.4 and the 17-70mm Tamron f2.8 and it’s the best set you can have for apsc. You can do it all with these two, events, portrait, macro, vlogging, and the reach at 70mm converted to a 105mm full frame equivalent is niceeee. The only thing I would add to my bag would be a telephoto lens for wildlife
I totally enjoyed your presentation on the Tamron 17-70 2.8. I wish to compliment you on your energy, approach, Spirit, presentation and observations. Yours is an absolutely informative and refreshing approach to reviewing. Outstanding! Congratulations. Col. (Ret) D. Shaffer
For me I found the stabilization to be enough to make the difference between usable and unusable footage. I want to eventually sell my a6400 and get an a6600 which I think will be perfect for all my video needs as far as stabilization goes.
@@leeteivans2509 can't really say, because I ended up selling mine not long after that comment lol. I didn't really try vlogging with it much because I found 17mm wasn't wide enough, especially for someone as tall as myself. If you are careful with how you walk it should be usable.
The way the bokeh works is that you get the same bokeh on the APS-C if you just walk farther back, so you actually do need the 17-70mm range to get a descent bokeh, which is going to be better for portraits, but at that focal length the lens isn't that sharp. I don't think it's a problem for 4K video, more for pixel peeping.
This is a must-have travel lens in my opinion. I have the old Tamron 28-105 f2.8, which I love and have been using adapted. But, really wish I had the autofocusing capabilities and greater contrast wide open. I think this would be an excellent lens to pair with the new fx30.
Hi, Terry! Thanx for the honest review! All I've seen before yours about video shooting was like "wow! it practically makes gimbles not necessary!" I think that those people were shooting very accurately. Few days before I've bought a used Glidecam HD-2000 and was happy as a child )) I've got it just for a fraction of it's cost. It's pretty old and ppl now are obsessed with electronic gimbles like Chinese "Cranes" and etc. But once I've seen and heard all their issues I've decided to start with classics. My main lens is a very cheap XC 16-50 for Fuji. The body (X-T3) itself is claimed to be "weather protected". Meaning that I can shoot in very light rain situations easily. At least I don't need to run for some umbrella urgently. And the steadycam is on par with it. Here I like that Tamron 17-70 claimed to be "weather protected" too... But... Did you've tested how it live on -5 ~ -10C conditions? Also I imagine that I'll need about 400g more on my steadycam in the bottom (maybe 300-350 as the head in my current setup is a bit too liteweight). I'm doing my "gym" with Glidecam now almost everyday :)) So I'll become a One Punch-man if it will not kill me :))) Relatively to that "pixel snobbing"... If you've seen some cheap 7artisans lenses then maybe you'll become "converted" :)) When I've did my spontaneous buy of a used Meike 28mm lens the guy also did offered me 35mm 7Artisans for a good price (for almost 2x more than Meike)... I've found that 7Artisans can't handle sharp shots (of far away objects) even with the fully closed diaphragm! I've noticed that even my current cheap Fujicon is much better! Meike does the job very well. I've got it for ~50$ and it's a good little thing (I have no fixes yet) to shoot at night. I'm seriously thinking about this Tamron but I think I'll wait about a year and the prices for the used units will become lower since Tamron will make some better lens (they can IMO).
Still here!! amazing review by the way, you were very thorough, answered all my questions, informed me and never failed to retain my attention and interest. Much love
The vlog test is pretty shaky/wobbly, even though you're standing in one place. I feel like the 18-105 gives a more clean, stable image. Do you have a chance to compare those two?
I have a video comparing the 18-105mm to another lens and camera combo - the Fujifilm X-S10 + XF 18-55mm. Basically it's Sony OSS vs Fuji IBIS+OIS. I realize it's not a comparison to the Tamron 17-70mm but it demonstrates how the Sony 18-105 OSS can hold its own (to some degree). Hi, I’m planning to buy this lens ( 17-70 2.8 tamron ) for photography specifically for wedding photography, covering both the ceremony and reception. My camera body is the Sony a6400. Previously, I used the Sony 18-105mm f/4 lens, but I found it lacking in sharpness. Could you please recommend a suitable lens that would provide better image quality for these types of events? Thank you!
I right now am running the Sigma trio, and the lack of quick access to other focal ranges on type of content i do makes me really interested in move into this 17-70, or a 24-70 from sigma, but honestly, the bigger range and cheapest price for 17-70 is way more interesting
First time I've ever been told by a RUclipsr to hit the thumbs up & subscribe buttons and actually convince me to do it! Much support bro, thanks for the video
I’ve been wanted to get this lens so bad! For the range you can cover with it it’s such a good price. Loved the video, and I loved listening to you in the golden hour podcast!
Thanks. About to enter into the ‘mirrorless’ cameras and was looking at this lens….very informative, think I get another brand with similar specs….looking forward to your other reviews….
I want this or the sigma 16-50......i really dont think this big ass tamron will work with my gimbal though, and i dont really thing the oss is gonna save anything
I already bought the lens but I wish I'd watched this first, I love it but it is a little big and this is the best vid by a mile for getting a sense of scale in the hand. Also having a second camera angle to the side when u talking actually helps a lot to keep the pacing up. Great vid bro, subscribed
Not sure if it’s been brought up, I don’t have time to read all the comments… but a lot of the walking “warbles” you see isn’t the lens at all. It’s the AWFUL rolling shutter of the camera being used. I’d love a revisit of this lens on the a6700. I bet it changes everything.
I appreciate your energy. I was watching some other videos that were so boring. I clicked on this and was so drawn in by your enthusiasm. I’m a Sigma fan but curious about Tamron Thanks!
I was gifted this lens, just haven't picked it up yet. I was doing reviews on it because I was looking at it before someone gifted it to me. I needed a f2.8 zoom lens for my fs5 because it's not the best at low light (until you switch from iso to gain/db. Then it's much better). The vc is a big plus, it's probably not the best but the fs5 have no stabilization what so ever 😂. I'm definitely excited about using the lens. Especially for you my youtube channel!! Thx ya bruh 🙏🏽
The only other lens that competes with this Tamron lens is the Sony 16-55mm G lens but that sucker is $1,300 bucks on Amazon right now! Plus it doesn't have any kind of stabilization feature. Crispy sharp imagines but that's only if your hands never move... Unless you have the a6600 with IBIS. But with IBIS and this Tamron lens that has internal stabilization feature... For $800 on Amazon? Definitely would choose Tamron for now.
I got sigma 16mm f1.4 and close focusing is very useful. Sony or full frame versions are mostly unable to do that. Major difference compared to Sony's 16-55 besides that is focusing speed, deciding would be based on those 2 points. There is one up for Sony though, if you own super wide or prime with close focus at 16mm, it's easily better to buy Sony, since you are covered for that situation.
Wich option is good if i'm using apsc but i want to buy something that could work on a eventual future full frame camera? i'm thinking on sigma 24,28-70 or tamrom 28-75
Gonna slap this bad boy on my a6600. I’ve been a fan of Tamron. I have the holy trinity Tamron on my a7iii and I’m very happy with it. This is a no brainer. Thanks for this review.

Just press “up” on your circular jog wheel on the back of the camera. Press it a few times to cycle through the display options and one of them will be the level
Thanks for doing this. I was thinking about picking up a Sony body soon and was peeking at this lens. Unrelated, do you like that table tripod your camera is on? If so, what brand is that?
Thanks for watching man! It came with a Vlog Kit I got at Samsung Unpacked last year. I think it’s by Movi or Movo. One of the two companies. And...it’s decent I guess. I wish it was more sturdy I’ll likely be getting a beefier one soon

Using this tamron for few days, love the flexiblity and sharpness, the only issue that im unhappy with this lens is that it gives A LOT of aberration and ugly bokeh at f/2.8, mosty I use f/4 or above on this lens, cause anything below often needs a lot of post process to repair photo. On other hand it's only 800$ so it can't be perfect :D
Thank you for this post. Very informative and helpful (and also engaging and entertaining). Quite interesting to see this "wobble effect" with the Tamron 17-70mm lens. I have seen this before as well on the a6400 and the 16-50mm kit lens. For the life of me, I'm not sure what I did to fix this wobble effect issue. It could have been a firmware update or a setting I've changed. I also do not recall experiencing this issue with other Sony lenses - 18-105mm, 10-18mm, and the 28-70mm full frame kit lens. I considered getting the 17-70 for its wider aperture but I may stick with the 18-105.
Great review! Can I ask if I can get “cinematic “ feel out of the A6400 without post correction? Reason being I am attracted also to Fuji’s film simulation modes for movie. But in all otter aspects the Sony is way better, so I am not sure which one to buy - any thoughts?
I have an a6400 and I'd suggest you youtube a6400 cinematic, it'll show you how to setup a picture profile. Ultimately, I'd shot in s-log/raw and color correct - would be fun to learn

Hi, I have sony 18-135, does it worth to replace it with Tamron 17-70? Thank you
Thanks brother! This was helpful
First time I've ever been told by a RUclipsr to hit the thumbs up & subscribe buttons and actually convince me to do it! Much support bro, thanks for the video
I’ve been wanted to get this lens so bad! For the range you can cover with it it’s such a good price. Loved the video, and I loved listening to you in the golden hour podcast!
so witch one did you get? bcs im looking bunch of videos for tamron 17-70 and all are positive comments about photographing :/
Would this work well to record drum videos ? My Sony a6100 with stock lens makes the drum sticks look like noodles. How can I fix this ?
I don't see anyone comparing this to the sigma 24 to 70 f2.8 art lens? Thoughts?
What camera and lens did you use to shoot this video? Looks good.
I already bought the lens but I wish I'd watched this first, I love it but it is a little big and this is the best vid by a mile for getting a sense of scale in the hand. Also having a second camera angle to the side when u talking actually helps a lot to keep the pacing up. Great vid bro, subscribed
how it's preforming?
I bought it for Fuji, it's awesome!
Great video Terry...man that B Cam shot is 🔥...but one thing people wanna know is how Terry like them 🤣🤣🤣 (inside joke)
😂😂 thanks bro
Not sure if it’s been brought up, I don’t have time to read all the comments… but a lot of the walking “warbles” you see isn’t the lens at all. It’s the AWFUL rolling shutter of the camera being used. I’d love a revisit of this lens on the a6700. I bet it changes everything.
This video was super informative. I care more about video and was debating this vs the sigma 18-50mm. After seeing this im going with the sigma
Great review, thanks! I'm bidding on one of these right now to use on my Sony FS5. Could be the one lens I need fo ray travel films.
Eye AF ne fonctionne pas avec cette objectif sur mon a6300.
Love your enthusiasm man!
Hey man! Thanks for the video. What body and lens you're using to record yourself in front of the desk?
Thanks a lot for your content dude! amazing review, a close aproach to the reality, keep doing your job u're really god on it!
I dig that this was a real review without the pixel peep crybaby rants. You kept it on the real side, and rolled out truth. I will be picking up one of these. Oh and you gained a new sub right here yo!
I just copped this for my Sony A6400. Great review man!
How is that combo working out months later...looking at it for my 6600
Thanx for your honest review man
Sorry, but how you could put the "level" on the Sony? I have a 6100 and a I need that level to have my pictures straight, thank you
Just press “up” on your circular jog wheel on the back of the camera. Press it a few times to cycle through the display options and one of them will be the level
Newbie question here: this lens fits in a Canon SL3?
I'm not even looking for a new lens but damn dude I just glued myself to the vid. Now I want a new lens, though. Amazing channel, dude 💪
Hey bro, how do you feel about the lens for use with short films and music videos??
It’s a good lens
Thanks for doing this. I was thinking about picking up a Sony body soon and was peeking at this lens.
Unrelated, do you like that table tripod your camera is on? If so, what brand is that?
Thanks for watching man! It came with a Vlog Kit I got at Samsung Unpacked last year. I think it’s by Movi or Movo. One of the two companies. And...it’s decent I guess. I wish it was more sturdy I’ll likely be getting a beefier one soon
@@TerryWarfield yeah I've been researching table top tripods too (along with lenses). It's hard because a lot of them are too small.
Thanks for letting me know
For reference. I can put the a7siii+cage+24-70mm GM and it will hold it as long as I don’t angle the lens downward
Should I buy sony a6400 with kit lens or body only and buy lens seperately? As people are saying kit lens is only a show piece. Is it true?
Great video and review! I think this lens is perfect for someone like me. I shoot with an a6400 and still have the kit 16-55 lens as my wide angle/zoom and have been eyeing this lens up for a little bit. You helped seal the deal when I can afford it! Thanks!
I’m getting it to complete my travel kit/ back up to my full frame kit
Can I use this lens on a canon m50?
Can you help me ? if i want to do a setup like your in this video What power should I put on the keylight?
Fantastic review! How does it compare to the Sony 16-55 2.8?
great review! I already bought it but this was by far the best review I've seen so far.
Top cat Terry! I see you brother, hey thanks for sharing just today I was setting at my desk trying to decide should I or shouldn't I cop this glass, and then there you are giving the really real on the very item I'm thinking about, so thank you for your very informative tutorial it was extremely helpful, This was my first time watching your channel and I truly believe I'll be all the better for it, real talk is good talk much luv brother, oh and yes I'm a coper!✌️
1:48 "And also.." is my favorite thing now 🔥😂
Thank you for this post.
Have you tried 17 70 in sports photog? Thank you!
Yo one question does the TAMRON 17-70 work on the Canon Eos R
Alright yall, where the #FAM AT?? I put wayyy to much work into this video haha. LIKE THIS VIDEO PLEASE, AND BE SURE TO DROP A COMMENT!

do you think this is better than the sigma 24-70 f 2.8 art? i know the sigma is for FF but you can use it with sony E mount so, wich one you think is better bro?
Excellent, straight forward review!
On the Vignetting issue when shooting in video. what program would fix it? I plan to use it for real estate. Or should I just got with the 16m fixed?
Also. I’m getting the 6400. But plan to
Upgrade to full frame eventually. What type of lens do I need to get that will be compatible with both? Is Full frame compatible with both but with crop?
Is there a full frame version is this lens?
Not gonna lie.. I love my Tamron 17-28 for vlogs. Tamron is a solid buy. On the 17-28 lens.. the barrel doesn’t extent which I really like. Great video man! #fam
“We In there like swim swear” lol
Yeah that 17-28 is a killer lens! Thanks man!
Just about to buy this lens. Thanks for the review! Great stuff
Aw man! Appreciate the love, yo!
For sure! Hope you get a few new followers from it. Keep up the good work
@@TerryWarfield appreciate it brother 👊🏽. Thank you so much.
What would be the best all around lens for zve10
Nice story dude. This was informative as well as entertaining.
waiting for comparison between this lens and the new sigma 18_50 2.8. .
The flaring is good to know about, as I was wondering if this is usable for infrared photography on my Fuji. I think I'll wait for this to be available to rent so I can test it before I buy.
But seeing as how I'm all stills, this could still be good for my visible-light X-T3 for general purpose and macro!
Great review!
Great video as always , wanna ask is it how far away from sony 85mm 1.8 when we talk about portraits?
Thanks for sharing the good information with us! I'm currently considering buying Tamron 17-70mm or Sigma 18-50mm, I kind of want a longer zoom range, but I also like how lightweight and small sigma is, tough decision...
Which did you go with? I'm in the same situation now. Leaning towards the Sigma as it's less expensive and much more compact. But the a6000 I have doesn't have image stabilization, so the Tamron looks promising. The extra range is a plus too.
@@mavagam99 Hi Markus, I've ordered the Sigma 18-50 a few days ago, the main reason is that I already have a Sony18-105, so I think the extra zoom range isn't as important. The fact that 18-50 is lighter, smaller, and less expensive seem to be more important factors for me.
@@ConstantineSPhotography thanks for your quick response! That is exactly how I feel, so I just bought the Sigma as well. I believe that I'll take my camera more places with the Sigma compared to the Tamron since it's so much smaller
@@ConstantineSPhotographyIs the sigma 18-50mm got backfocus/out of focus issue? How is your experience with the sigma as of today? Still considering either sigma 18-50 or tamron 17-70
Sigma 18-50
thank you for the review brother
