@@AlexisDimes I usually eat a lot before fasting and sleep through most of it so that's not an issue, but there have been times at my work before where i need to stand watch for fme, or fire watch, and something has happened where a co worker can't switch with me when they're supposed to, so i have had to wait longer for my lunch break

This is exactly what I've been looking for. The pandemic, severe depression, and a more active and stressful job left me way under weight and unable to do the fitness activities I love. Getting back in shape and putting on muscle is such a struggle when you're not sure how to fuel that fitness journey, so thank you from one Abbey to another!
So I recovered from anorexia as well and I find that it does take time for my physical hunger cues to come back however I did nearly always have mental hunger cues. So that’s researching about food
@@evavoegeli3635 How long did it take until you regained your physical hunger? I've not had any hunger cues since around last December.. (apart from a handful of times). So I'm basically just making myself eat 3 times a day despite no actual hunger. I don't have an ED but am underweight :/ would love to hear back from you!
@@katie6677 Tbh, I still don’t really have them perfectly and it’s been almost a year of recovery... I guess what I would ask you is are you eating to mental hunger and/or are there some emotions like stress or social anxiety making it harder to listen to your body. Also, are you eating enough? Sometimes it’s just a matter of eating more of things you enjoy eating. Check out Tabitha farrar’s channel, she has a bunch h of tips for low appetite, even if it is Ed related
These are brilliant. I want to add this: do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Don't worry about replicating someone's IG meal plan. Or adhering to any of her tips or rules perfectly. Just do something that is better than what you were doing yesterday. Every day. That's how you keep on track and meet long-term goals.
Thank you for this, I haven’t been good since the past 3 weeks because Ive been thinking I’ve been getting worse than getting better since ive been trying 1 year ago this month. “Do something thats better than what you did yesterday.” Is something I needed to hear besides saying it myself ✊
@@brilliantbutblue thank you. I was working on my weight pre pregnancy and I'm being mindful of how much I gain, but definitely not trying to lose anything while I'm pregnant. That can wait for now 😊

Thanks Abbey, for some of us weight gain is struggle. It's so different when you watch people starving themselves to be skinny and you find the opposite is true for you. Skinny shaming is a real thing in certain culture.
I REALLY NEEDED THIS. THANK YOU, ABBEY! It's crazy how much weight loss is pushed on social media, and we, the ones who are desperately trying to gain weight, are sort of left behind. Thank you!
I stress "don't" eat and really appreciate this video! Im an active person and sometimes feel like I don't have enough energy to perform my best, so looking forward to using your tips.
This couldn't have come out at a better time! I'm currently recovering from an eating disorder and in the process of weight restoration. It would be great if I could restore my weight healthily :)
You know, this is actually so reassuring. I’ve always been under 100 pounds but I literally never feel hungry and always struggled with digestive issues (including nausea) due to anxiety. I think, as an adult, I need to put on some weight and get healthy. I thought I was the only one but I’m so glad to know there are others on the same boat! Thanks so much for these tips Abbey!
I am in the same boat. I am petite boned and have always weighed 105-112. Lately I dropped 5-6 pounds. I am not very hungry after I make a morning smoothie. Most because I feel full. Earlier this week I had a CT scan and they found that I have something that is called SMD. Nausea is one of the symptoms . You should probably ask your doctor for a CT scan.
The "be social" trick is so real! It's the thing I keep doing even many many years after recovering from my ED is always eating/cooking either with someone or while watching a videos/tv show/twitch stream/etc. It makes meal times so much more fun and I find myself enjoying the whole process a lot better!
it's funny because although higher fat foods are recommended, when i was gaining weight what really helpd me was a higher carb and maybe refined carbs because after a meal i wouldn't feel full for very long so then i could eat more meals per day. I'm not trying to say what abbey is saying is wrong- i'm just saying that for me- bumping up the carbs reaally helped a lot.
Yes! I found that I needed to balance the small volume, calorie dense foods (higher in fats and protein and fiber) and the easy-to-digest carbs. One of my favorite simple, quick meals was rice (easily digested and meant I didn't stay full forever), meat, and avocado (higher in calories and good nutrients). Also salt, pepper and sometimes onion and garlic powder.
Thanks for this video, I'm not really trying to gain or loose weight, my current focus in that department is more "whatever happens happens" but I have been worrying a bit about my weight loss this past year. I mean it's not on an unhealthy level or bringing me into an unhealthy area weigh-wise but I still am starting to worry a bit. So this definitely helped. Also: shout-out to all those who lost weight during quarantine due to mental health struggles and now have to listen to their family congratulating them on their weight-loss, even after telling them the reasons. I'm very sorry you have to deal with that, take a hug from me!
Thank you! Quarantine sucked and so many relatives kept praising me for losing weight instead of gaining it! It was so frustrating! Also, my country will start quarantine again 😒 this video couldn't have come at a better time! Hugs to you too 🤗🤗
@Graup THANK YOU, i feel so seen! i unexpectedly lost weight that i couldn't afford to lose (and mostly muscle! :-\) during quarantine and the number of people who are like, "oh i WISH i lost weight!" and don't get that underweight isn't any better than overweight is just... ARGH. messed up diet culture is real. i feel so alone in my struggle. i used to love food and had no problem eating. but various things over the years - digestive issues reducing the foods i can eat, and mental health / stress issues reducing my appetite... i'm now in a situation i never thought i'd be in, where i find it a chore to eat. anyway, hugs to you too!!! and also i have to say @@AbbeysKitchen i really appreciate this video just to validate that the struggle is real. and also the part about eating bland food - OMG i LITERALLY did that tonight for dinner. i was like, i need to eat protein, i haven't had enough protein... but just didn't feel like eating anything until i thought of making soft scrambled eggs. added cream for calories! also some ice cream, and now i'm gonna make a protein milkshake to up my calories, which i've been doing but feeling bad about - but no more!
Let me just say, the alarms work. My boyfriend is constantly dehydrated because he always forgets to drink water and he simply doesn't even realize when he's thirsty. So I set up like 8 alarms throughout the day to drink water and after a few weeks he started to become more conscious of his body's thirst cues 😆 it sounds silly but it definitely is effective!
I typically don’t comment on RUclips videos but I just wanted to say that these tips are so helpful for me and I’m so glad that there’s a dietitian out there talking about gaining healthy weight. I’ve always had a hard time gaining weight and because I’m on SSRI’s my appetite is often not so great. I’m an athlete too so putting on healthy weight is important to me! Everyone always tells me to eat fast food to gain weight quickly but that just doesn’t feel good to me. Thank you Abbey!
I am a breastfeeding mom and I recently started weight lifting more seriously and struggling to get enough calories so I don't feel like garbage. Thank you.
This is so helpful. It helped me understand my under-eating from stress and anxiety better; I knew it was a problem but this just gave me so much clarity about what’s happening with me and helps me feel confident that I can make changes and take better control of my eating. It means so much to me, because under-eating affects me so often and so negatively. I’m so thankful for you and for this video!
I have been trying to restore my weight after losing some doing quarantine and this was really helpful especially for me as a nutrition sciences major who is constantly bombarded by calorie and macro recommendations. You are such an inspiration for me❤️
I'm trying to do the same. I don't want to just gain unhealthy weight, but I need to gain significantly more body mass. It took me years to realize I'm anorexic...men usual go undiagnosed. I hope you're doing well.
when I was trying to gain weight, I ate a lot of nuts / nut butters and that helped me SO much in gaining weight!!! Literally every meal and snack had a handful of nuts to get the calories in!! For me, I didnt get too uncomfortably full!!
I hate nut butters, especially the peanut butter! The whole consistency/texture situation feels weird in my mouth and makes me gag 😅 I'm so happy it worked for you though. We're all different and Abbey's list is pretty comprehensive so fingers crossed for me too, haha 😆
@@SamElle I eat it from time to time but disguised under something else like tomatoes or some salty feta cheese. Anything to give it flavour, I guess, since it doesn't have much going for it by itself 😁
Thank you so much for this!!! I’ve been struggling with a relapse of my ED this year and when I went to approach recovery and gain a few months ago, I had such difficulty finding reliable information(like from qualified people lol). Unfortunately I encountered a lot of mixed info and with a lot of trial and error, I gained weight so fast that it triggered me back into my ED. Right now I’m going slow but I want to approach recovery again. This is so helpful- thank you so so much. Your channel has helped me so much.
My top tip: There are many kinds of hunger cues, and rumbling in your tummy or everything sounding delicious are only two of them that you may or may not be getting. Crashes in energy is also a hunger cue! When you start feeling irritable and sleepy it could very well be your body's way of saying it needs more energy (calories). Anytime I start feeling that crash I ask myself when the last time I ate a real meal was and it's usually been too long.
This couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve just started my weight gain journey and struggling with just putting more energy dense food in my mouth, not exercising it all off and facing food fears.💓
Abbey, thank you so, so much for this. I've been super skinny my whole life, I'm trying to gain weight since last year. I can't believe that you gifted us with this video
I am so incredibly happy this video was posted! As someone who has struggled with anxiety my entire life, I have found that when I am extremely anxious I lose my appetite and eating makes me sick. I recently spoke with my doctor about my weight and eating concerns and found that taking anxiety/depression medication helped. It gave me the motivation to lift weights again, cook more frequently, and I find myself less anxious which equals a bigger appetite. As Abbey stated throughout her video, talk to your doctor! I’m so glad I did. Having my medication along with these tips is going to help my weight gain journey. Thank you Abbey!
Most of that type of medicine will make u gain weight. I was on Paxil for about 13 years. I looked like fatty patty. Now I'm too skinny thus why I am here. 😊
Took me a while to build up the courage to watch this. I had to put on weight about 18months ago after my ed escalated during the pandemic. As I couldn't go into hospital or a facility, my step mum took it on herself to help me (she's a trained Samaritans councillor). It's really good to see that we did exactly what you recommend.. I find that even now, I have to remind myself that now I am healthy, eating is keeping my heart going and even though I am heavier than I want (still focus on the rolls on my tummy) that thats just me and it's ok. Sorry, just thought I would share what an excellent job my step mum did - she saved my life when the NHS was saving the rest of the UK!
I’m 27 weeks pregnant and still struggling to put on weight because of my HG. I’ve really given into ALL of my cravings recently and I can tell my health has taken a toll. Thank you so much for this!
I lost weight due to severe morning sickness during the first trimester of my pregnancy so now I'm trying to catch up and gain weight now that I'm in the second trimester. I've only ever been exposed to "how to lose weight" content so i was really stressing on now to gain weight. Thank you for this!
I’ve been 85 pounds (5ft tall) for a very long time, I’ve been able to temporarily gain weight in the past, usually while on vacation, but it falls off so quickly. This video was incredibly helpful, the small ways that I can add calories to meals make so much sense! It’s a struggle tho when you have a partner that’s trying to lose weight and your trying to gain weight. it’s easier for me to not eat what’s in the fridge than it is for him to resist the urge to eat the high fat foods that I need and he must avoid.
Thank you, Abbey! I suffered from an eating disorder three years ago and lost a huge amount of weight. Since then, I have a great relationship with my body and the things it can do for me, nutrition and working out! Now that I'm trying to hit new fitness goals, like building muscle and a healthy weight, it's really hard for me to put on weight, as my metabolism is quite fast and I don't get very hungry. These tips are amazing, thank you!
Maybe a video about how you can easily make a “boring meal” into something a bit more interesting? Or how you can use normal fridge/cupboard items to create a different meal on a budget 😊 Thankyou for sharing these tips! X
I’m so excited about this one! I’ve been trying to gain weight for years and have honestly been getting burnt out trying. I can’t wait to get some new ideas!
THANK YOU for this! It is a much needed and rarely ever talked about. As a life long underweight woman with serval chronic illnesses, I struggle to gain and maintain my weight. It isn’t as fun as it sounds. Being underweight isn’t healthy, either. Never had an eating disorder and love to eat! This is such helpful, encouraging information. Thank you so much Abbey!!!
thank you so much. I’ve been underweight nearly my whole life and have been struggling for years to gain weight. I always worry about my health and how being underweight could negatively affect me. I’ll try these tips out.
Hi Abbey! The timing of this video couldn’t have been better. I have a teen who struggles with being underweight and being on medication that affects his appetite. He’s taken some pretty bad advice in other channels and I’m having a hard time getting him to understand between nutrient dense and calorie rich foods (ie, avocadoes vs KFC, you can imagine who is winning this battle). I plan to use this advice to reshape my approach to his nutrition. In fact last night’s snack and this morning’s breakfast were inspired by your advise here. I can’t thank you enough.
I’ve really noticed that my hunger has changed since I had my stroke last year. I’ve become less hungry and lost my appetite completely. Plus chronic fatigue, and possible dysphagia, has made cooking and eating difficult.
I'm so sorry this has happened to you. As part of your multi disciplinary team do you have a Dietician and speech pathology both would really help you with your recovery.🙂
I love this! I work with primarily older adults. Many of which have COPD or other conditions that make maintaining a healthy weight difficult. So many of these tips are things I tell my patients every day. The "bang for your buck" has become a favorite phrase of mine!
Yes finally! This is such a topic that isn't spoken about much, however I've been underweight all my life and due to illness I lost even more the last few years. Thanks Abbey! Edit: I do want to point out that not every person that is underweight and/or wants to gain weight, is unable to tune in with their hunger cues. I eat about 2500 calories a day, I'm a 25 year old short female with an average lifestyle. I am naturally underweight, even though I eat more than all of my peers. I always have, yet I'm underweight. Three years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which made me lose more weight and thus I need to gain even more. It's not that I don't have hunger cues or that I am unable to eat. I just don't gain weight. I don't have an eating disorder either.
unless you have a medical condition, eating 2,500 calories will make you fat. you're not counting calories properly, or you're eating too much unprocessed and raw food which the body doesn't absorb as easily (only about 2/3rds of its calorie count).
@@kseniachevenard839 as I said, I do have a medical condition, but only the past three years or so. Before that, I was just always super hungry, low blood pressure, low sugar, etc. I eat a lot, yet am still underweight and unable to gain weight. Even when drinking nutrition drinks prescribed by a dietitian. Sometimes bodies behave this way, just like bodies being more overweight when the person doesn't even eat much. I don't think you should judge this easily...
I relate to your comment a lot. at 28 years old with two kids and barley 5,5 ft I am still on the lower end of my weight no matter how much I eat and I realized it is because of stress. when I am stressed I dont eat out of love of food I eat because I know my body needs fuel. I have no underlaying medical conditions either but I see how your medical condition can affect your eating. thank you for sharing sometimes I feel mad when people think I am on a diet
This was a great video for me! I am 66 and recently noticed that I dropped weight to an uncomfortable number. I have always maintained my weight within 3 pounds up or down, but now I do not have much of an appetite and only feel like snacking when I do get hungry. Of course, disease crosses my mind, but this video helped me to realize that I am not the only one that may be experiencing this situation. I am excited to go back to eating what I am comfortable with but will add some of the items you mentioned in the video! Thank you much! :-)
The feeling guilty about spending so much time on myself, just for meals, is a HUGE one for me! I'm not so much restricting now, but on a binge cycle, where my body and mind have rebelled and just want to eat everything, and feeling okay about myself, loving myself despite overeating and all this carry-on about something as simple as food, is difficult! My upbringing etc!
I have no hunger or fullness cues even though I recovered from anorexia and got my period back. I’ve been recovering for a couple years, but my cues never returned. My period DID come back a few months ago so maybe I just need to wait longer and my cues will return but I don’t know 😭 I make sure to eat enough calories and eat every few hours and not go too long between a meal or snack (except for sleeping)
Maybe the fact that you eat super regularly is why you don't feel like your hunger cues ever returned? If you feed your body "continuously" it just thrives its best live with fuel all the time and don't need to warn you that you need to feed it. A bit like thirst and drinking. If you drink enough you are not supposed to feel thirsty either I've been told ;) But maybe you also need to wait still... anyways, congrats on getting your periods back !!
I have a blog post about getting your period back that you might find helpful: www.abbeyskitchen.com/lost-your-period/ - however, recovery can be a lot more than just getting your period back or weight restoration. There is a physical and psychological recovery and it can take just as long, if not longer for some to gain those cues back as it took to lose them. Please be patient and kind with your body and don’t give up! Keep doing what you're doing.
I’m so glad i found this video. I have always been “tiny” my whole life and been praised for being healthy (choosing fruits and veggies over cookies etc) but I didn’t realize how much my go to snacks and meals were putting me perpetually into a calorie deficit. I’m 5’2” and have been 97-99 lbs my whole adult life and I’m just getting to the point where I want to make a change that will stick. I want to be STRONG. The water after meals tip, drinking juices and recipe water swaps are game changing and so easy. I also started to buy big bins of nuts and eat a handful or two everytime i’m the littlest bit hungry between meals. Thanks for all the healthy tips, it’s so hard to find content around gaining weight since i know majority of the world is working hard to lose it.
I have a very hard time gaining weight. I usually feel nausea when I'm trying to eat more, but I do find adding fat a bit more tolerable (adding after cooking olive, flaxseed oil, grilled sesame oil or omega 3 margarine to litterally everything). I'm currently still working on it though, it's tough
Hi, wiithout knowing anything about your journey I did want to share something from my own experience: my partner has a very bad intolerance to garlic and onion, which took us years to figure out, and the symptom is nausea. Nausea can be triggered even if there is garlic or onion powder in prepared food (they are in literally all processed foods), or even when vagueries like “natural flavors” or “spices” are listed among the ingredients. I wanted to share this on the off chance that it sparks something for you. I cannot believe the difference since we identified this.
I've been looking for advice like this! I watch your videos because I suffer from depression and am underweight as a result. I've been trying to healthily and sustainably gain back my weight and hopefully transition into muscle building exercise. Thank you so much! Finding advice on this is so hard to find!
This has been an area of real struggle for me. It never bothered me when I was younger - even the infertility/ irregular cycles part. But I’m 42 now and thinking about the later half of my life, bone health, immune health, etc. 5’5” and 107. My goal is to reach 115. I have also tried to balance the weight gain with eating healthy and not sugar loaded foods. Even though I’ve been a nurse for 20 years, I TRASHED my body with my diet in my 20’s and 30’s; eating Eggo waffles and drinking sodas for breakfast… My diet wasn’t too good growing up either - raised on Hamburger Helper and corn dogs. Anyway, that did some damage to my metabolic health and I have some insulin resistance now. I have to force myself to eat walnuts, salads with lots of EVOO, avocados, etc. I really appreciate you touching on this subject. I learned some helpful tips that I plan to put into practice.
I moved to a new country recently, and while I used to drive everywhere, I'm now walking everywhere! Though I consider myself recovered from my ED, this new introduction of SO much activity has me losing weight again, which I can't really afford to do. Not to mention, all the new foods I'm exposed too, and a lack of all the old comfort foods in my home country REALLY has me struggling to keep up.
Thank you SO MUCH Abbey! I had just reached a point where I was so frustrated at the lack of weight gain resources for people with appetite difficulty. I had never heard of bland or cold foods to inspire appetite but it makes so much sense!
I'd been restricting my food for the last 2 or 3 years because I was very stressed about my living situation and I gained an (unwanted) 20-30 pounds and lost my appetite, and thankfully now I'm in a much, much better living situation but I still struggle with low appetite which is made worse by my ADHD medication. I used to want to lose the 20-30 pounds I gained but after watching Abbey I decided to just be kind to myself because things happen and my body clearly doesn't want to lose the weight so I'm working more and more towards acceptance! But the appetite issue sucks because I'm trying to be healthy now and I'm trying to eat enough calories in the day but I rarely eat enough even though I try. This video helped me though, and I'm going to try these tips out! Thank you Abbey for such an important video
Thank you so much for this video! I really appreciate that you focus on nuts seeds and oils and don't mention meat. I've been underweight my whole life and vegetarian for 20 years. So many people say I should eat a steak or a burger to gain weight. I know they're trying to be helpful but they're not. This was a great video and I can't wait to implement some of these tips!
I understand that this video is following common nutritional advice BUT from experience I can say that a lot of the conventional advice doesn't actually work in practice. Yes, calorie dense foods do have lots of calories, BUT they are also very satiating. I was always so full trying to gain weight on avocados & hummus. My body kept trying to "maintain" under my BMI by sending me fullness cues after eating all these nutritionally dense foods. I wasn'table to move the needle consistently until I accepted enough "junk food" in my diet. If you need to gain weight, then "healthy foods" are whatever foods will get you back to healthy weight. Eat the pastries, ice cream and cookies. It's OK! Staying underweight long-term is far more dangerous for your health than eating some processed foods.
Of course! These are just meant to be some general nutrition tips, it is definitely not an exhaustive list of advice. Thank you for mentioning this point as well!
I absolutely agree with this. Nuts, nut butters, seeds, avocado, cream, real cheese, full fat versions of dairy, adding oils/butters to salads or dishes, eating meat with a lot of fat on it, etc are all very satiating and self limiting in my experience. The only difference between skimmed milk and full fat milk is the fat content, since carb and protein content of it is the same, yet I am able to drink skim milk and not get any satiety (my body would just feel the same as if I had consumed water) from it and not interfere with later intake of food, but if I drank full fat milk it would physically feel like I had eaten a meal. What I really think makes weight gain easier is eating junk/processed foods that combine carbohydrate with dietary fat, such as ice cream and pastries, crisps/chips, etc. Just like you said. Maybe these things are not healthy if eaten too much but certainly the calorie dense healthy food approach could end up backfiring because for some people because they are so self limiting due to satiety.
@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this nutritional weight gain advice counter productive. Sure, I can eat a more nutrient dense meal or snack, but the satiety from full fat foods with keep my body to full and lower my hunger at my next meal. (And yes, I has the exact same experience as you with milk)
@@racheltheshadesoforange8700 I saw someone else in the comments recommend the processed food carb fat combo as well, it's very "more-ish", doesn't give much satiety, it stimulates insulin secretion more than a lot of healthier foods would. Did Abby mention avoiding fiber rich foods? (I have forgotten). Because that can help if stomach size and appetite are both really small and other tips haven't worked. That's also one of the reasons why the processed food tip works, as those are mostly low in fiber.
Omg I'm so happy abby just the best thing you could possibly make you have really made my life so awesome and I don't have the words for how much this means to me and everyone who is struggling with this. Hope your family is all good and wish them luck 💙💙💙💙
I find sleeping very important. When I had just a few hours of sleep I feel more tired during the day obviously and that makes me less hungry. I feel like I am craving sleep not food that sounds stupid I guess
Removing fiber from my diet, albeit temporarily, was the key to gaining back weight after sickness. I couldn't digest vegetables very well at all and had to make a drastic change to white rice and more processed foods. My dietician had to basically hold my hand through the process because my former diet was remarkably balanced and healthy, but to get back my last 10lbs, I needed to forgo the healthy stuff just to get enough nutrients and calories in. Coconut milk in smoothies, curries, and adding sun butter on everything is a staple to help me maintain my wieght. I've been using mechanical eating and am still missing my cues but hope those come back soon.
I lost 15 pounds in my first trimester from throwing up/food aversions. I’m just starting to feel better but still have a small appetite! This was a great resource thank you!
Gish I needed this! Thank you Abby! I started college two weeks ago and now that we’re back on campus.. It’s been rough! Because of my anxiety, I cannot eat in the morning, so breakfast immediately went out the window.. Then on campus, not only do I have no break between classes, but there’s nothing available to me! So I find myself on the train, at seven pm, heading back home and realizing that.. I’ve only eaten a sandwich and some crackers 😬 My appetite is so low and I really look at mealtimes as chores! All of this makes me so upset because I have struggled with weight loss in the past, and I’m finally happy with my body( being home definitely helped me gain weight because I wasn’t skipping meals).. And now I’m so stressed out that I’m gonna start losing weight again 😭
The video I’ve been waiting for! After gaining 14 lbs., I’ve been struggling to continue gaining, more due to lack of appetite. Going to utilize these tips and hope for progress 💛
For me I suffer from eating disorders that makes me don’t want to eat anything because I would feel like I’m full or sick even tho I didn’t have anything all day but recently I started watching a great youtube channel where the creator makes food and eat it (and the food looks so pretty) so I started to follow the recipes and eat them while i watch them eat and it made me feel more hungry and my appetite opened up idk why but I guess the idea of having someone to eat with me is nice and made me feel better
Due to some mental health struggles I often accidentally sleep through meals or forget to eat. Eating the calorically dense foods is how I’ve already been eating, but I didn’t know how to make it healthy, or consistent. Thank you for making this :)
This is wonderful! I did a lot of these things to gain weight after several years of being super sick from Crohn’s mixed with ortho and anorexia 😭I’m here to tell you it works! I decided I’d eat 3 meals and 2+ snacks/desserts. Lots of oils, nuts, sauces, toppings. I try to keep some cooked grains and/or veggies on hand for mix and match meals. Travel with snacks and keep rice cakes and nut butter on hand, or your favorite snacks. You won’t eat them if they’re not available so stock up! ❤️❤️
I work midnight shift, and sometimes the odd hours throw off my hunger cues. Thank you! On a related note - a video on tips for shift workers would be awesome! Are there any nutrients we need more of? I know I personally supplement vitamin D. Edit: Meal or supplement ideas that promote healthy sleep when you have to sleep during hours that go against your circadian rhythm. I know melatonin is not good long term, and as someone who has spent 2 years on midnights, I had to quit taking that. I'm sure there are all sorts of ideas others can think of for this to be turned into a whole video!
This is helpful. I’m a distance track and XC runner and I don’t have a period. My weight has been hard to gain but I’m finally at my fertile weight! :)
Thank you for this video! It is perfectly timed for me, and I am struggling with low appetite and weight loss during chemo. They don't want me to lose, but I haven't been able to maintain my weight this past month or so. I've lost 20 lbs. I'm hoping these tips help.
before I even watch! I am so excited for this🙌🏾 I have a four year old that eats well but in very small quantities. I am doing my best not to pressure her into eating since I worry about her growth slowing down. it is ironic because mothers around me complain about thier kids eating non stop meanwhile my daughter comes from school and barely eats😅. as long as she is healthy I am happy I am sleeping well at night but I still feel mom guilt
It's so hard to find a good information on gaining weight, cause people think fat is the problem but it's a double edge sword that has issues for skinny people.
Abbey!!! This was so refreshing to see! I’m so happy you put this video and info out for people to access. I remember when I felt like I wasn’t receiving realistic approaches to gaining weight from a number of dieticians I saw and I was constantly trying to find credible advice like this but instead I had to resort to literally learning all your tips the hard way! 😝
I’ve always been super skinny and tall my entire life, same as Mam. So in September 2021 when I started to realise I had severe Dysphagia, i was absolutely terrified. As you can imagine my build isn’t ideal for someone with Dysphagia. (investigations are still ongoing as to why I have this, but we just found out I have severe B12 deficiency, again like my mother) It continues to progress and I am now on soft/liquid foods. Cream soups, mash potato, and runny eggs are pretty much my only dinner options. I seem to be one of the lucky ones who can manage perfectly at breakfast (so I tend to have most of my calories at this time) but after that my options are slim. Ensure shakes, soft cheese and milk are my snacks of choice. Even yogurt is too thick! If you haven’t already it would be great to see some tips for making a Dysphagia diet nutritional and interesting. It’s such a struggle to keep on the weight these days. I’m 5’7 and 46kg when writing this. I hope I’ll be able to enjoy my favourite foods once more ❤️
thank you thank you thank you for this video. every time i find a video like this it invigorates me to double down on continuing to fix my weight. ive been chronically underweight my entire life and it sucks. i feel guilty sometimes because i know that im technically '''''the ideal'''' in terms of the fucked up diet-based beauty standards, particularly from the 2000s-2010s standards, but the fact is that being small combined w/ my disability is an absolutely awful cocktail full of chronic pain and fatigue and co-morbid depression/EDs. i am SO ready to help my body help itself i think particularly wrt living with EDs, making food fun as well as nutritious is SO IMPORTANT. food-as-experience is the cornerstone in like every single culture. theres a reason why east asian food, for example, is so often paired with social gatherings and groups (like hotpot!). we're MADE to enjoy food. we SHOULD enjoy food! and i can say first hand eating with loved ones makes it so much easier. i love making food for my partner because a) i'm taking care of them, and b) it means im also taking care of myself, which in turn makes them happy. i highly recommend having a meal buddy. the last time i was with my partner (we're ldr and trying to immigrate, so we stay together for half-years oof), i bumped myself up 20+lbs and oh my god, my energy!! my strength!!! i was even BREATHING better. the change felt incredible
Soooo helpful. Many things I had worked with my RD on. Finding myself struggling with relapse with the pandemic, empty nest, menopause. I always say I'm in remission because I don't actually believe in full recovery, especially as I research the biology of EDs. Any stress triggers the desire to restrict, so I have to work at staying well. I'm off to buy your cookbook now. Thank you, Abbey! xo
I think a great video idea would be about how to help a loved one who struggles with weight gain. My father is severely underweight and it would be great to just get a sense of direction in how to help him get better. 😊
Why its this video making me so emotional! Wow the struggle of gaining weight & eating is real sometimes even for those who don't have a complicated relationship with food, sometimes it is just life that is complicated
Thank you this is very helpful! My stepdad is disabled in a wheelchair (MS) and recently had five surgeries this summer so his weight took a hit and it's been a struggle to help him maintain his weight to fight off infection and recover (especially because hospital food sucks and the meds they give him make him nauseous).
Hi Abbey, I know I am seeing this video and posting this a little late, but this is just what I needed to watch. I am currently a NAIA college cross country and track runner who actually needs to gain a few pounds according to my coach and athletic trainer. I have been struggling with amenorrhea for the past couple of months, so I talked to my coach, and he said to see the athletic trainer, who told me that I need to gain a couple of pounds. I created a youtube channel recently, so I could find lots of videos related to this and post comments, and I came across your channel. You are very knowledgable about nutrition and I enjoy watching your reviews about celebrity diets. I just subscribed to your channel. I also found your orthorexia journey video and just watched it because in my past as a female runner, I struggled with that too. Thank you! Happy New Year!!
As someone with gastroparesis and recovering from an ED, this is so helpful. Things that help me are sparkling water, peppermint tea, eating cream of rice (doesn’t make me nauseous at all) and calorie dense bars like GoMacro or Rise bars
Great advice. I have to watch my cholesterol because it is way high. But, I need to gain weight. Truly frustrating when trying to choose healthy, calorie laden foods!
After being underweight my whole life I finally found out 3 years ago that I am sensitive to gluten (different from celiac disease). I studied nutrition so the doctor told me I didn't need to visit a dietician. I strongly suggest everyone to still visit a dietician after finding out you need to cut something from your diet. However, what helped me most was to seek help from a psychologist. After all these years of feeling weak, I suddenly had a lot of energy. Changing your diet can change your whole life. It certainly did in my case. So instead of just going to the doctor or dietician, also take your mental health into account. p.s. Half a year ago I reached a healthy weight by just eating healthy meals. My appetite has been low for about 2 years and the planning mealtime in my calendar helped a lot for me! I do receive hunger cues now :)
thank you sooooo much for making this!! i am the person who has such a hard time keeping on weight. now that i am breastfeeding it is even harder and i am constantly searching for ideas to keep on the weight. thank you thank you!!
Thank you so much. I had covid-19 in march 2020, following by heart then stomach problems. I lost 18 kg. I want to regain weight se badly but so many foods give me stomach aches, so I need to restrict. I'm scared to death to be underweight and that there is nothing I can do about it. Given that I'm a young woman, my doctors don't belive that I want to regain weight, or that some things truly are difficult to digest for me, they think I have anorexia so their advices are never spot on. It can be so hard to have all tose comments like "you're so lucky !" when I feel so emaciated, or suspicion that I caused this for myself, that it is my fault, when I try so hard to regain weight. This is the first video I see on the subject who do not judge, and who has advices for different situations. This is an important topic. You give me hope.
Love the last tip. My safe meal is cold new potato, tinned tuna, hard boiled egg and green beans. It can be tiny or bigger but if I have those things ready in the fridge I can assemble it really quickly and eat it before I start thinking of reasons why not.
Thank you so much! I’m really small by nature, I’m 4’11 and I weigh about 93 pounds which I think is okay but I know I need to eat more and I’d like to start lifting weights and so I know I need to ear smaller meals more often instead of a few bigger meals. I love having the help of what to add and I’ve been going through a lot of stress in. Going through a move away from my family which causes me not to be hungry and have restrictive tendencies / eating disorder flare ups, i also struggle with anxiety nausea so these suggestions really help I will absolutely make a safe foods list! And I will also find a doctor to contact and help me gain weight safely
I'm so happy to have found this video! I already watch your videos but hadn't seen this one and ever since I started Vyvanse I can't stop losing weight and I desperately want to gain some strength back and build muscle
If you dont have any friends or family to eat or snack with, I recommend watching videos of people trying new foods or eating in general. It's helped me feel less alone and sometimes I will prepare the same meal that they're eating so it feels like youre eating together! ❤
One of my biggest struggles is to decide what i want to eat so my form of the safe food list ist a folder on my phone. Everytime i cook something good i take a picture and save it and when i dont know what to eat i look through all the pictures. Visuals help me much more than just the name of a dish and a mental image
As someone who is trying to lose weight... Im so glad to see an informative video on the otherside of the spectrum. Funny note: to lose weight and gain... eat several meals per day. Interesting cause it still makes sense.
Im at 95 lbs and I wish I could eat more. Thank you for not being judgemental. Most people don't understand at all.
Right along with you
Same, I want a little more weight so that if something happens where I'm forced to skip a meal I don't feel faint or snap at everyone
@@narrowwing you mean like surgery or for religious purposes?
@@AlexisDimes I usually eat a lot before fasting and sleep through most of it so that's not an issue, but there have been times at my work before where i need to stand watch for fme, or fire watch, and something has happened where a co worker can't switch with me when they're supposed to, so i have had to wait longer for my lunch break
1. Focus on calorie dense foods
2. Eat smaller meals more frequently instead of eating alot at once
3. Drink healthy drinks with more calories
4. Only hydrate after you eat
5. Use calorie filled liquids in place of water in your recipes

I completely understand, thank you for sharing. I hope the tips in this video will be helpful for you ❤️
So I recovered from anorexia as well and I find that it does take time for my physical hunger cues to come back however I did nearly always have mental hunger cues.
That’s a great tip as well, thank you for sharing!
Love this!
💜💜
Thank you for this, I haven’t been good since the past 3 weeks because Ive been thinking I’ve been getting worse than getting better since ive been trying 1 year ago this month. “Do something thats better than what you did yesterday.” Is something I needed to hear besides saying it myself ✊
Preach it ❤
Am I overweight and pregnant currently? Yes. Did I still watch this whole video because I love Abbey's gentle and respectful advice? Also yes
Congratulations on your pregnancy!! You are doing the best you can and that is good enough💕
@@brilliantbutblue thank you. I was working on my weight pre pregnancy and I'm being mindful of how much I gain, but definitely not trying to lose anything while I'm pregnant. That can wait for now 😊

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Thanks Abbey, for some of us weight gain is struggle. It's so different when you watch people starving themselves to be skinny and you find the opposite is true for you. Skinny shaming is a real thing in certain culture.
I totally understand. I hope these tips are helpful for you ❤️
...especially if you are a guy. Being REALLY skinny as a guy is NOT COOL
Yep 😞
I REALLY NEEDED THIS. THANK YOU, ABBEY! It's crazy how much weight loss is pushed on social media, and we, the ones who are desperately trying to gain weight, are sort of left behind. Thank you!
I stress "don't" eat and really appreciate this video! Im an active person and sometimes feel like I don't have enough energy to perform my best, so looking forward to using your tips.
I totally understand! So glad these tips are helpful for you 😊
Me too!
This couldn't have come out at a better time! I'm currently recovering from an eating disorder and in the process of weight restoration. It would be great if I could restore my weight healthily :)
I hope these tips are helpful for you ❤️ good luck on your journey!
What is SMD?
The "be social" trick is so real! It's the thing I keep doing even many many years after recovering from my ED is always eating/cooking either with someone or while watching a videos/tv show/twitch stream/etc. It makes meal times so much more fun and I find myself enjoying the whole process a lot better!
Totally! Thanks for sharing!
it's funny because although higher fat foods are recommended, when i was gaining weight what really helpd me was a higher carb and maybe refined carbs because after a meal i wouldn't feel full for very long so then i could eat more meals per day. I'm not trying to say what abbey is saying is wrong- i'm just saying that for me- bumping up the carbs reaally helped a lot.
That’s a great suggestion too!
@@0nly0NE. ooh nice! I loved white bread with olive oil and salt with a slice of ham onto! And snickers for dessert!
Same for me...
Hugs to you too 🤗🤗
I’m so glad this is helpful for you! Thank you for sharing ❤️
I’m so glad these tips are helpful, thank you for sharing!
I am a breastfeeding mom and I recently started weight lifting more seriously and struggling to get enough calories so I don't feel like garbage. Thank you.
So glad this video is helpful for you!
You are such an inspiration for me❤️
I’m so glad this video is helpful for you ❤️
🙏🏻 just moved to another country and I’ve never struggled with eating so much - this is truly perfect timing
I hope it’s helpful for you ❤️
I've been recovering from anorexia for the past couple of months so this comes out at a perfect time. Thank you❤
Thank you for sharing, I hope these tips will be helpful for you ❤️
I'm trying to do the same.
The whole consistency/texture situation feels weird in my mouth and makes me gag 😅
I'm so happy it worked for you though. We're all different and Abbey's list is pretty comprehensive so fingers crossed for me too, haha 😆
I added peanut butter to everything during my recovery from anorexia.
I’m so glad that was helpful for you, thank you for sharing!
@@Felineintuition oooo do you like avocados? I also included that when I ate too much nut butter / wanted to change it up a bit
I’m so glad this video and channel have been helpful for you ❤️
My top tip:
There are many kinds of hunger cues, and rumbling in your tummy or everything sounding delicious are only two of them that you may or may not be getting.
I'm so glad this video is helpful for you!
Abbey, thank you so, so much for this. I've been super skinny my whole life, I'm trying to gain weight since last year. I can't believe that you gifted us with this video
I’m so glad these tips are helpful for you ❤️
I am so incredibly happy this video was posted!
Oh no, I’m sorry! I hope these tips are helpful for you!
I will put this on my list to discuss!
I’m so excited about this one! I’ve been trying to gain weight for years and have honestly been getting burnt out trying. I can’t wait to get some new ideas!
I hope these tips are helpful for you!
Thank you for sharing. I hope these tips will be helpful for you!
thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad that this video can be helpful for you at all!
I’ve really noticed that my hunger has changed since I had my stroke last year. I’ve become less hungry and lost my appetite completely. Plus chronic fatigue, and possible dysphagia, has made cooking and eating difficult.
Dysphagia is horrible :( I struggle so much with it and nothing helps... I hope you get better soon!
I’m so sorry for your experience. I hope you are doing alright ❤️
Yep... there's variation in the population. Some of us are less energy efficient. It's like having a car with a low gas mileage
For sure! Thank you for sharing. I hope the video will be helpful for you!
Not my current goal but love the advice for everyone! Let's all achieve our happiest healthies lives 😄
Agreed! 😊
Do you have any tips? I'm recovering and I havent gotten my period in month pls help I'm 15 I'll do anything
I'm also in recovery, but struggling. If you have any tips they'd be much appreciated!
@@AbbeysKitchen tysm I just read it all and will do!I'm just scared to tell my parents and scared to tell the doctors and I really dont want to
Just thank you, from the bottom of my heart, I really appreciate what you do here on RUclips.
I totally understand that this can be difficult. I hope these tips are helpful for you at all!
I'm so glad this advice is helpful for you!
Social media needs more people like you!!! 🤗
Aw thank you ❤
This has been an area of real struggle for me.
Thank you for sharing your experience with this topic. I hope these tips will be helpful for you!
Thank you so much, I’m so glad my videos are helpful for you!
I find sleeping very important. When I had just a few hours of sleep I feel more tired during the day obviously and that makes me less hungry. I feel like I am craving sleep not food that sounds stupid I guess
I totally understand!
Thank you for sharing what worked for you!
I lost 15 pounds in my first trimester from throwing up/food aversions. I’m just starting to feel better but still have a small appetite! This was a great resource thank you!
I hope the remainder of your pregnancy is a little easier for you. Congratulations on your pregnancy. 💞
Oh no, I’m so sorry! I hope these tips will be helpful for you!
I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling right now. I hope these tips are helpful for you at all ❤
The video I’ve been waiting for! After gaining 14 lbs., I’ve been struggling to continue gaining, more due to lack of appetite. Going to utilize these tips and hope for progress 💛
I hope these tips are helpful for you!
Those are great tips, thank you for sharing! ❤️
Nice! Refreshing to see a weight gain video as this is absolutely a goal for some folks. 💜
So glad it’s helpful!
I will put this topic on my list to discuss in a video!
I hope these tips will be helpful for you! Wishing you luck on your journey ❤️
@@AbbeysKitchen Thank you!
This is the video I have been looking for for years. Thank you so much for your insightful advice with practical examples
before I even watch!
I understand that this can be difficult! I hope these tips are helpful for you 😊
It's so hard to find a good information on gaining weight, cause people think fat is the problem but it's a double edge sword that has issues for skinny people.
I'm so glad this video is helpful!
I’ve always been super skinny and tall my entire life, same as Mam. So in September 2021 when I started to realise I had severe Dysphagia, i was absolutely terrified. As you can imagine my build isn’t ideal for someone with Dysphagia. (investigations are still ongoing as to why I have this, but we just found out I have severe B12 deficiency, again like my mother)
It continues to progress and I am now on soft/liquid foods.
I hope I’ll be able to enjoy my favourite foods once more ❤️
im very insecure of being skinny and my family calls me skeleton sometimes. i only eat one portion a day cause its hard to eat
Thank you so much for making this video. Under eating and lack of appetite are so hard to get over 😢
Literally found this video the day I started my weight gain meal plan!!
thank you thank you thank you for this video. every time i find a video like this it invigorates me to double down on continuing to fix my weight. ive been chronically underweight my entire life and it sucks. i feel guilty sometimes because i know that im technically '''''the ideal'''' in terms of the fucked up diet-based beauty standards, particularly from the 2000s-2010s standards, but the fact is that being small combined w/ my disability is an absolutely awful cocktail full of chronic pain and fatigue and co-morbid depression/EDs. i am SO ready to help my body help itself
i think particularly wrt living with EDs, making food fun as well as nutritious is SO IMPORTANT. food-as-experience is the cornerstone in like every single culture. theres a reason why east asian food, for example, is so often paired with social gatherings and groups (like hotpot!). we're MADE to enjoy food. we SHOULD enjoy food! and i can say first hand eating with loved ones makes it so much easier. i love making food for my partner because a) i'm taking care of them, and b) it means im also taking care of myself, which in turn makes them happy. i highly recommend having a meal buddy. the last time i was with my partner (we're ldr and trying to immigrate, so we stay together for half-years oof), i bumped myself up 20+lbs and oh my god, my energy!! my strength!!! i was even BREATHING better. the change felt incredible
I'm so glad these tips are helpful for you!
Why its this video making me so emotional! Wow the struggle of gaining weight & eating is real sometimes even for those who don't have a complicated relationship with food, sometimes it is just life that is complicated
I totally understand. I hope these tips are helpful for you!
I'm so glad these tips are helpful. Wishing him a speedy recovery ❤
Hi Abbey,
I know I am seeing this video and posting this a little late, but this is just what I needed to watch.
I'm so glad these tips are helpful!
I hope these tips are helpful for you!
@@AbbeysKitchen many i’ve heard and tried to implement but some were new and others were great reminders!
Rewatching this because my mental health had a pretty serious hit last weekend & consequently I lost my @ss.
Thanks for helping me stay centered
Yes Abbey!!! Thank you so much! We appreciate you and your knowledge💛
Thank you! ❤️
I'm sorry for your experience, that sounds very difficult. I hope these tips will be helpful for you ❤
This is great. My sister struggled with weight gain most of her life and I'd rather be on the weight loss end that the weight gain end. 🙃
I'm glad the tips are helpful!
Love the last tip. My safe meal is cold new potato, tinned tuna, hard boiled egg and green beans. It can be tiny or bigger but if I have those things ready in the fridge I can assemble it really quickly and eat it before I start thinking of reasons why not.
That sounds like a great meal!
Going through a move away from my family which causes me not to be hungry and have restrictive tendencies / eating disorder flare ups, i also struggle with anxiety nausea so these suggestions really help
I will absolutely make a safe foods list!

I loved it. I felt so respected and taken seriously with my problem. Thank you
One of my biggest struggles is to decide what i want to eat so my form of the safe food list ist a folder on my phone.
