- Jeff from Apex CDL Institute is a licensed 3rd party CDL examiner in the state of Kansas. Here he demonstrates how to perform a proper pre-trip inspection on a Class A tractor trailer.
Any further education or clarification is reserved for students of Apex CDL Institute.
Sadly it has come to our attention that scam CDL training companies have downloaded our video and are actually selling it to people and passing it along as their own. Jeff and Apex CDL Institute put this video on RUclips for a reason, to make it available to anyone seeking to improve their safety and become a Commercial Driver. We want it to be free to all people, this was never about money. If you come across anyone selling this video to you for money, please contact Apex CDL Institute (913) 585-1120 and our attorneys will correct that problem.
To be clear, we are not talking about legitimate schools that are actually training students. They are more than welcome to use our material as much as they want. We are specifically talking about scam schools that sell our material as if it was their own.

I watched this video dozens of times before I even started my CDL school. My instructor was blown away when on day 1 of class I absolutely NAILED the entire pre-trip from front to back. Thank you for this video.
I just wanna take a lil time out to thank you. I passed everything today on my 1st try. Today I became a Valid CDL holder thanks to this Video. You’re a blessing to us trying to complete the inspection....🙂

Kentucky. I just use what he said an added things my state require to pass
What did you do for the light check? Looking at the dash doesn’t cut it.... or maybe it does idk

How many times did you watch the video for everything to start sinking in?
You got to know what CDL stands for along with your ABC's CDL = Cracked Damaged or Loose (all metal parts) ABC = Abrasion Bumps or Cuts (all rubber and electrical parts) // I probably watched this video 10 times and aced my pre-trip inspection. It is not cracked, damaged, bent, broken, loose, it isn't leaking, there are no abrasions, bumps, cuts, and it's in good condition. It's free from any illegal welds. It's properly mounted and secured. Looseness is indicated by shiny metal metal shavings.
Just wanted to say after failing the pre-trip twice, my examiner recommended I watch this video. I watched it 20 or 30 times, went back and tried again and passed! I now have my Class A CDL. Thank you Apex!!

Be personal with it and make the Instructer aware that you are paying for this and you need the training. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Some of them are there just for the check. It’s your responsibility to learn. Good luck to al.
I learned so much from watching and studying my in cab and pre trip videos as well as all of the maneuvers. Trust me, it will pay off. My first day to CDL school is tomorrow. I'm ready, because of you ) Thank you very much for your video.
Got my CDL today! Thanks!
As a seasoned CDL driver, I would advise all students to do a thorough and COMPLETE pretrip even if your instructor or examiner say its ok not too before you take a truck out on the public highways. In the event of a accident, incident or road inspection, you as a driver, even with just a permit, are responsible for a full inspection to pass the truck is safe to put out on the road. No examiner or driving instructor is going to take the blame if you didnt inspect the truck fully when it legally comes down to it.
I have gone to job interviews where on the road test they tell me say the registration is ok and or this and that is good and I just say, that is good but I am going to see it with my own two eyes, as its your responsibility as a CDL driver to know the truck is safe and legal to do so.
So remember newbies, do a full pretrip before every trip, have no fear in declining to drive a truck that is unsafe or has incomplete paper work (insurance, ifta, registration truck and trailer), it is your responsibility that you sign with to the DOT that you will complete for the safety of you and the other motorist on the road. Any time you are behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, you and you alone are responsible that the pretrip has been fully accomplished. Stay safe my fellow drivers, see you on the road!
Van Litespeed just here to say that your comment is to long to read
Joel Macareno
If it was too long then I’m pretty sure we won’t be seeing you waste your time on some silly pretrip bc that takes even more time.
The author of this original post has a very good point.
Kick ass information! Thank you!
Also check that bill of lading or whatever it's called that specifies what you're carrying.

And my instructors told us to always weigh the wagon BEFORE you get to a port of entry
Van Litespeed hell I drive my wife’s minivan doing postmates , even with that I check for leaks before I start it. Can’t be too careful.
The guy in the video said to check everything if you’re going on the road but there’s a reason why you only do half of it during the test. They just want to know that you know what you’re looking for and not wasting their time if you do everything twice...
Passed my Class A Cdl yesterday. Aced the pre trip solely because of this video. My heartfelt Thanks to you!

For anyone who is studying for your road test, the best advice I can give you is to study,(which of your watching this you are) and stay calm!!! Am watching it over and over again. The intention here is to know the parts of a truck..once you know the key parts you can inspect any model or make of trucks since you will be able to identify parts like alternator ...gear...Arms...Links...Rods...belts...pumps etc and their location in the compartment. Very important
Just wanted to also thank you Jeff for putting together and sharing this video. I just earned my CDL Class A and I can honestly say that it wouldn't have happened without your help. I took written notes on what you said throughout the video and then rehearsed it again and again. On test day, it just flowed naturally and I had confidence in what I was saying. This is the definitive video on the CDL Pre-Trip and Air Brakes exam. Thank you and God bless you, brother.
he gets in the truck and then put it in gear and turns it off so it doesn’t roll then charges the pressure for the brakes (parking brakes) So that he can test the pressure and if there is any leaks.
But what I don’t understand is why isn’t the parking brake already on when he gets in the truck and why do you need to put it in first gear to listen for any pressure leaks? Why can’t you just leave it in park re-pressurize it and then turn it off without putting it in first gear……….
can you pass me your notes?
I passed my test 7 years ago because of this guy and it was the best thing I have ever done with my career. Thank you

@@iamthevanavator281 You will ask the examiner to step to the front/rear of the cab so that you can perform your light checks. Tell him everything you going to do before you actually do it.

So much to remember but I'll watch this many times if I have to so I can get that cdl and leave my crappy job.
Update: Just finished the pre trip portion. Second attempt though since I missed the pass quota by 2 points. Depending on if the tractor has it, call out the DEF reservoir next to the fuel tank. As well if the examiner wants you to be specific on the gauges:
Engine temperature: 165-185F
Oil pressure: 30-75 PSI
Voltmeter: 12-14V
Transmission temperature: 180-250F
Air Pressure in tanks: 100psi recommended
Same we got this lol
Did you leave your crappy job yet?
Same here
Thank you for the heads up 👍
Good point about being specific about the gauges. When Jeff talked about checking the tire with a pressure gauge he said it needs to be at least 100 psi, but for the gauges inside the cab they just needed to be "at the proper operating level". The license examener doesn't know if the person being tested knows what those proper operating levels are unless you mention it specifically.

I like the way jeff talks. He's a good teacher.
2 and a half years after obtaining my cdl I came back to this video to brush up on the pre trip inspection.
Great video! Two things I would add though for the brake test right after the "SALE" tests: 1) pressure build up test, (85 to 100 in under 45 seconds for dual air systems and 50 to 90 psi in under 3 minutes for older single air systems), and 2) air pressure governor cut-in and -out test (showing that the pressure increases to about 125psi then stops, then after fanning the brakes a whole bunch to drop the pressure to around 90 psi, the governor will cut-in and pressure will start increasing in-between brake presses.)

16 years otr and your the first instructor I've seen who actually showed people how to physically check the slack adjuster I rate this a 9 out of 10 although I know it is not needed for their test I think it would be beneficial to the students and new drivers to show them how to adjust their brakes but overall best one yet thank you
would of also liked to see you show new people how to check breaklights and physicaly look at blinkers and headlight but still A1 job side note you didn't mention brake fluid or blinker fluid lol
+stephen driver what about headlight fluid..?
+stephen driver the problem with that is twofold. first most slack adjusters today are self adjusting and as long as you do a pumpdown the brakes should always be in adjustment. secondly most drivers today would most likely crank them down and cause a fire
He doesn't show that, probably because all vehicles as of 199? have automatic adjusters. No company you work for will have manually adjusted brakes on them. If you work for one, get a new job, the equipment is prehistoric, though I like the manually adjusted ones better.
What is business do a 16 year old dude have with a big ass semi?

jonjonjrfrmcali thanks!
This video and other youtube videos give so much info. On the actual DMV test you are only supposed to know like 1/3 of everything here outside the truck.
You R an 👼😘
Thank you for putting this on RUclips I’ll be going to school for my cdl A and I’m very nervous about it but this is making things a little bit easier for me
jonjonjrfrmcali thanks
Just got my permit, and I'm quite nervous about attending cdl school lol. This video sure helps me build confidence alot, thanks for providing it for free for those of us who don't have that friend or parent with a truck to practice with. The manual only goes so far, and when school starts I wanna be at least somewhat prepared. So much kudo's for this video👏.
Me too. Upgrading from Class B CDL. Ppl tell me i shouldn't be so nervous since I drove greyhound buses, and the double buses. Shoot I'm pretty sure driving a truck is a lot different. God bless you we both got this though
Just passed my CDL Exam today. This is the primary PreTrip video I’ve watched over these past few months and really made a big difference on the way I approached performing the PreTrip. Great job Jeff. Thank you!
Which state did you test in
@@waterworld635 Indiana
@@JayWatch23 do you have to do the static brake test in Indiana? Jw going to school in Indiana next month
@@keyboardwarrior5612 no, I didn't. In that case for Indiana, just remember ALE instead of SALE
Nobody is talking about the camera 🎥 guy , probably be a student staying after a class cuz he don’t get this all mechanical stuff like myself.. but 🎩 off man great job 👍🏼 on zooming on those small things.. you did really good and you are my hero..
I will recommend this video to new students it really helps I just passed my test yesterday
Thanks 🙏
Studying for my CDL and could pass the written no prob but this video is a huge help for the inspection. Thanks for this lesson.. fantastic!
I wish we had a form ABC here in Nevada. Here in Nevada we have to do the pre-trip for the entire truck. Including the Inc cab and the three-step brake test. We have exactly 1 hour to perform the entire thing. Wish me luck because my test is tomorrow! And I just got word literally an hour ago to be ready for tomorrow at 6:30 AM because I’m not doing standby anymore I actually have an appointment and I will be doing pre-trip and my maneuvers all in the first day. In Nevada it’s broken down into three parts. Pre-trip, maneuvers, and road. If all of you reading this today would wish me good vibes so that I can pass my pre-trip. Because if I don’t pass pre-trip I don’t go onto maneuvers. And if I pass my pre-trip tomorrow and I go onto maneuvers wish me luck on that because I’m not the greatest on my 90° load docking. So I am praying to all the higher powers that I get parallel parking for my third maneuver because that one I’m really good at for some reason. My straight back in offsets are good so if I get my parallel I’ll be just perfect. Anyway you guys if you’re getting ready to take your test just study as much as you can listen to all these videos on RUclips over and over again especially when you found one that pertains to your state. Remember every state is different so don’t completely take what this man is saying to heart 100% because it’s 100% going to be a little bit different in your state and you don’t want to fail it because of that. But listening to a little bit of everybody never hurt.. So if you’re getting ready to go to school or take your test I wish you the best of luck be safe out there and keep the rubber side down💕💕💕💕 Also, if you’re a lady follow my channel for my experience as a woman truck driver. Good luck you guys!
Awesome Video...Passed my Pre-trip inspection inside and out of the cab on my "FIRST" try with only 1 missed item that you covered but I forgot to say, Thanks Jeff.
Good job 👍
@Hi Mark how are you doing
@Mark Great video, How are you doing
Hope we get to know each other with time and patience?
@Hello Mark how are you doing
2 more weeks for my exam, will watch this everyday from now.
It’s been 3 weeks- how are things?
Just got my CDL today, was having trouble scheduling appointments, but everything went smooth! Wanting is power! I went from not knowing a thing to fully understanding everything
Abraham Gonzalez -I’m SO HAPPY for you!!!👍

Thanks for passing this knowledge of learning and knowing your truck… information very helpful and I personally recommend this video to anyone getting there CLASS A. Thanks again for this video, making a change in my life… NEW CAREER on the way 🎉🎉🎉😊
If it wasn’t for this video I never would have passed my pre trip inspection. Thank you very much.
Watched this video 10 times and I passed my CDL test today!
for all you ladies and gentlemen of California. The In-cab and brake test in this clip is great and bless this man (jeffrey-steinberg) for making it so clear and understandable but!!! In California there are a few ad-ons
A. In your in-cab inspection you need to check the knobs of the trailer and the tractor that they are not broken and or cracked.
B. In the brake test, you need to tell and demonstrate to the examiner the cut-in and cut-out points. You should say that the cut in should be no less then 100 psi and the cut out-out should be at 125 psi and no more then 130 psi.
C. In California the warning light and buzzer should come on between 75-55 psi and the pop up point is between 20 to 45. And of course you'll need to demonstrate it all. Good luck
not surprised.
elaborate on california pretrip inspection
I'm in California..i noticed not big schools here, could that be cuz of all these fucking extra laws😂 I can't wait to leave this state & start somewhere else near my school..prob Arizona.
Is there anything that POS state does like the rest of the country? It's literally like a different world over there. They just HAVE to have everything so much more over the top in that liberal ass state.
It’s similar here in Washington state
Thanks for the video, I got my class A CDLs yesterday. I watched this video a lot!
This was fantastic!! The first thing I looked at was how long this video was and thought "ahh hell". I quickly realized the length of the video was directly related to the value of its content. The steps laid out with the explanations provided were really what every driver, even experienced drivers, could benefit from greatly. It's July 2023 right now and everything reviewed in this video is completely relevant today. There may be minor adjustments, based on your state, that would have you use a modified explanation to give to your exam or test administrator. But having the knowledge of how things are connected, identifying what's what based on how they're connected, and the overall wisdom provided to improve a driver's ability to solve a problem before it becomes a disaster is without question, priceless. Thank you for sharing your teaching skills with the rest of us.
Steve
By far the BEST pre-trip video I've ever seen. Great job Guys.

U want to pass your pre-trip WATCH THIS VIDEO!!! He is knowledgeable and explains the truck better than my instructors in my school. I pass my pre trip yesterday thanks to this man and his video. This the real deal people watch this video and study your sheets u will pass GURANTEED!!!
Hey, watching this company videos helped me pass my pretrip & in cab today. 🙏🏾
This is the best pre-trip video I've found so far
This instructor is good I respect his professionalism I feel confident I will pass my brake test
I watched your video all day yesterday and today before I took my test. I passed it all well conditions. thanks, now I'm able to drive a commercial vehicle
I passed with flying colors ,even made some school instructors look bad ❤❤🎉 thank you my guy
This man deserves a raise! Ive watched sooooo many pre trip videos of people just rushing thru a pretrip and didnt evem learn much from it. This guy is so thurogh, explains everything in detail. I cannot thank him enough. Best pretrip video out there hands down.
I want to thank you for making this video. When I 1st watched this I thought there was no way I could remember all of this. I watched this video 3 times a week for 5 weeks straight. In my state PA you have to do the entire truck, I got a 89/90 points. Thanks to you. I passed my CDL test the 1st time. I just want to say thank you.
What was the 1 point off for?

@@chrisco9914 probably misspelled the name lol 😆
Got my class A CDL today thanks to this video! So informational, the instructor said it was the best pre trip he’s had. Thanks for the video!!
Absolutely an amazing instructor and video. I passed my CDL test with no problem with the help of this video. Its a lot to retain but its absolutely worth the cramming of information. There a schools that charge thousands for the information this guy gives. Amazing video and thank you for sharing it with us.
he gets in the truck and then put it in gear and turns it off so it doesn’t roll then charges the pressure for the brakes (parking brakes) So that he can test the pressure and if there is any leaks.
But what I don’t understand is why isn’t the parking brake already on when he gets in the truck and why do you need to put it in first gear to listen for any pressure leaks? Why can’t you just leave it in park re-pressurize it and then turn it off without putting it in first gear…’m
I sustained a TBI and I’m currently working and studying for my CDL A permit. I hope I can remember all of this but this is an extremely detailed video and I’m so grateful for it!
Just wanted to see how you're doing with your training and that you aced it and got your CDL!
I just got my CDL Class A today thanks to this video I watch the video for one week straight and I passed my CDL all three test and I never Drive a big truck never been inside one so it really works thank you
Arian A I have my permit, took the written tests, now I just need to set up an appointment for the driving part to get my license... you telling me that I will pass it JUST by knowing the pre-trip?? Surely there is something else I need to be ready for? Like actually driving/parking/shifting the truck..?? Surely..
@@chrismoney1468 you will have to do a driving/skills test. The tests vary depending on your county. Mine only included my Straight backing, offset backing, parallel park and had to drive around the block.
Brandon Roe thanks buddy, that is what it is looking like I'm gonna have to do here In central Texas. I'm mainly just concerned with pre-trip stuff.
@@chrismoney1468 Good luck, brotha! Did mine out of West Texas.
Brandon Roe drive around the block ? Lol that’s it
Thank you for this video. I've been driving 25 years and I learned some new things and several I'd forgotten or gotten careless about. Think I'll be watching it every so often from now on
Just passed my permit I’ll be starting school in a month be looking at this video 3 to 4 times a day hopefully I pass !🙏🏼
I just passed my cdl a test in New York State 2 days ago !!! I passed mainly cuz of this video ! Every time got home from work I would be on my rowing machine listening over and over and over . It would be in the background as I was studying my cdl book . As I was washing the dishes I would be listening to it ... over and over and over !!! I passed my first time !!! Thank you for all your effort you made into putting this video together . :)
