- Jeff from Apex CDL Institute explains how to do a Pre-Trip examination for the new modernized Class A CDL Exam.
Before using this method, make sure your state has adopted the 2022 CDL test model. If they are still using the 2015 test model, please use our old video.

Hi, I passed my cdl last week thanks to your videos keep up the good work and good luck to everybody studying to get the cdl.
I take my test on the 18th
Congrats on passing your test! Unfortunately I only got 30 hours of training included with the original course and now I have to talk my non-truck affiliated company into buying more so I can be better prepared for it.
Congrats!
I love his videos
I heard that they choose randomly on which section to inspect the truck is that true or did they make you inspect the whole truck
I like that you ask the examiner to put on his seatbelt, then immediately ask him to take it back off to get out and help check lights.
Real power play 😂
I’m a Transportation Manager with many years of experience as a driver before I moved into the office as a supervisor. This video is by far the best professionally done pre trip inspection I have reviewed. What makes it so valuable is that you obviously have the knowledge to explain each step of the inspection in a clear and understandable format rather than just checking the boxes. It is important that a driver should know the basics of the equipment on his or her Tractor trailer. Thank you for your time and effort making this video!
This guy is a very good teacher. This is a good video for new CDL drivers trying to get their license. Thanks for sharing
But why this way? So you turn on the engine first? Then you check the fluids? I bet this was invented by a pencil pusher. Not an actual driver
@@SEMI-Diesel-Chrome It is explained in the video. Most people that fail, fail the in cab. So get that out of the way first.
@@SEMI-Diesel-Chrome You will also be amazed how many examiners will have you start in the cab. As he's mentioned, ask your examiners and follow the direction of how they want you to perform the test.
He has college education or just gifted in eloquence/articulation. That's all.
I watched your last video over and over before my test and passed! I pointed out parts to the inspector I think he didn’t even know 😂 I still go back to it just to review and refresh. Glad to see you back and still in business🙌🏽🤝🏽
I tested today out of Pennsylvania with your pretrip 2/16/24…. One and done!!!! I have no restrictions awesome video
York pa I hope
I'm on the other side in Washington state
@@jessed6379I’m in Scranton pa🤢😂
I’m in Miami

You are a legend you helped so many of us pass our pre trip salute to you good sir
I just watched the Old video. Now I am gonna watch this one. I am interested in driving, but there's a lot of information and I have ADHD, so thanks for the videos; I learn much better when I am seeing it and hearing the explanations and why it's important. And to be able to watch several times makes it sink in. I feel that this also helps with the anxiety of learning something new and attending school and not being blindsided with an overwhelming amount of knowledge.
YYYAAAYYY I just passed my pre trip thanks to this video...thanks Jeff
Just watched the video for the first time. You’re an excellent teacher. I’ve watched tons of pre- trip videos and yours is by far the best. Thank you.
Pennsylvania here and you will pass with this video. Other videos talk too fast and don’t go through everything. This guy does. I only been training myself. Yes myself for about a month now. My instructor who has been driving for yrs told me the other day I taught him some things 🤯. Out of 4 of us I was the only one that knew my air break test WITHOUT a truck. I did it in my head. Once I got to class I sat on a couch and taught the class. The instructor was very impressed.
How I can get this school?
Also congratulations to everyone and any who passed and good luck to those of us that will be taking the test🙏🏽
I always recommend to my coworkers your old pre-trip video! it helped me pass only 2 years ago🎉 Thank you for helping so many of us pass🥰
Stay strong and sober mija, i once was lost myself, but with God's grace and mercy, im 14yrs sober and the best thing that ever happened to me.i wish the best. Take one day at a time, you can do it!
Microtech. A man with class.
Thank you so much for these amazing videos! My Emergency Vehicle Operations class loves your videos since there are no thorough under-the-hood instructional videos for pre-ride ambulance checks. These Class A pre-trip guides are good enough for government work :) It's interesting how many similarities there are between your vehicles and many of our ambulances.
This and the old video have been so helpful. Thank you for a great instructional video.
And this truck is clean as a hell !!!! 👏👏👏👏
Very helpful videos, and very professional explanation of the new requirements. Thank you for all your time and effort - II appreciate it very much.
I live in AZ and I’m in my first week of class for the CDL. I hope to pass but I’m starting to feel confident watching this video.
Definitely want to say this video helped me pass my cdl test!!!!! so clear
I tried watching other people go through the pre trip inspection and skipped through many videos until I found your previous recording! You explain everything very thoroughly and make it very easy for me to remember what to look for and why. Thank you.
This was a beautiful pretrip video! Thank you so much you were so thorough and clear! I will be watching this again and making my own heat sheet to study along with your video.
this guy def helped me pass my test back in 2020 thanks man
It's a clear explanation about pre trip checkings,as an indian trucker I thank to cdl instructor.
I m from Canada 🇨🇦 but really helpful tips and training, thanks man .
We have utilized Apex material for external training purposes. Thank you for contributing valuable content for the industry.
I just passed too. Thanks for the help Jeff!
you are definitely FIRE PURE FIRE, when you do your lessons I pay attention. have not seen you in a couple of years ,I have your old pretrip which is still classic to watch you have inspired me to get a cdl license you are the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep up the excellent work you are the best
Thank you for this. I've now compiled a 10 page Word doc based on the three videos I have watch on pre trip. This one helps to pare down from what I have learned so far! Can't wait for my classes to start! Keep Truckin!!
Great video, you can actually see everything he points out and give a great explanation on what he's pointing out👍🏿👍🏿
Excellent videos. Thank You sir, I am studying your videos so that when i get the chance to perform my brake and in-cab inspections Ill be confident that i have been shown the proper ways in what to check and how to do them. New CDL seeker from Antioch, California.
I've tried to get my CDL twice at my current company and failed both times, lol But now I start school at my community college April 1st to get my CDL and I'm nervous. So I'm watching this video and your other video. At least a 100 times before school starts.I can't wait your videos.Give me tons of confidence.Thank you for putting this out
Well how is class compared to the videos? Are you learning a lot more than the videos and if so, are you glad you went to truck driving school? What did it cost you?
I like the way you describe the pre trip i think you have done a great job thank you
I followed your tutorial and passed both my pre trip and skills test (brilliant video btw, very informative). But when I got to the road test I came up short. Turns out that there are different rules of the road for hazmat than standard (at least according to my examiner). Have a retry this Tuesday but I'm guessing as I couldn't find any info regarding the differences aside from placards, parking and railroad crossings (which I passed btw). Wish me luck and ty for your hard work.
Did you pass after reattempting, and if so, were you able to find out any differences if indeed qualifying with hazmat was a slightly different road test than the standard class a cdl?
@@arynpittaway9790 Yes I passed, thank you for asking. The examiner had set certain parameters regarding things like "safe gap" when stopping and clearance under an unmarked freeway overpass. His supervisor reviewed the exam (Not at my request) and informed me that she had rescored the road test and passed me.
Thanks for the video! Definitely will help me pass my Class A as I'm in school now!
Getting ready to upgrade to A - super helpful!
Brautiful presentation. Thank you very much
I just watched your original video, then I seen this one and since its 2 months ago..I had to watch this..Thanks for the help with your videos..
Excellent video!! I'll be using this to study for my pre trip portion of the test.
Thank you Sir for sharing such a powerful information
GOD BLESS YOU IN EVERY AREA OF YOUR LIFE
The best thank you for your time and help you rock bro
Thanks for video it's clear and helpful
Thank you ..nice Show example.. i dont speak a lot english but i can understand a lot.. God Bless you
Thank you so much for this video explains a lot of information study to get my CDL
Jeff, your video is helping thousand driver,am not in USA, but I follow you
Signing up for a CDL class that starts next month studying your videos man
Fantastic video, but I would like to add a few things. Now, I took my CDL test in Texas so the first two points could be state-specific, but it's better to be safe than sorry when you're trying out for a whole career and it certainly can't hurt you to implement them, so why not? Give yourself the best odds!
- When listening for odd or suspicious noise(s) through your window(s) during your in-cab inspection or you just happen to have your window(s) open during any of the other test portions (road test, backing), be sure not to let any part of you hang out of the window. This can be seen as a safety issue. Personally, I just lowered the windows a few inches to prevent the possibility of that occurring while still having the benefit of hearing any noises should they happen.
- When doing your in-cab air pressure checks, do not touch the parking break valves during the emergency brake function test (seeing that they pop out on their own between 20-45 PSI). I was told by my instructors that they have personally seen students fail because the test examiner considered the possibility that the student may have pulled the valves out either intentionally or by accident rather than the valves popping out themselves.
- When placing your wheel chocks for the air pressure test or really anytime you place them (roadside issues and the like), a good trick is to place them at either end of a steer tire rather than using your drive tires. If the truck rolls and settles on one of them, it can take some persuading to dislodge it from beneath the tire with some good heel-kicks or a hammer. If you place the chocks on the steer tires though, you can simply turn the steering wheel side-to-side a few times to push them both loose. No hammer or heel-kicks needed!
Good luck everybody!
I watch the old video at least fifty times And I never got my cdl. But im officially in class March 18th and watching the new one now and going to watch it at least 50 times before class starts
Awesome just a great video!
Jeff, the old and the new videos are going to help me and my son take the Regular License Class A which is a non-CDL but has all the CDL Driver / Road tests. We will be driving a Super C RV built on a Freightliner Chassis with a Cummins engine that is 35,400 lbs and because of the RV weight we are required by law to have the special license. This is helpful because I am not finding many RV resources to teach the details in these two videos. There are RV schools that teach driving an RV but not the written and pre-trip parts of the testing. Thanks again.
I blew it up. 😡😪😪😪🤪 today. I need to watch it over again and again 😩
Great video boss
Thank you nice video perfect one👍
Interesting to see how things are different I live here in Virginia and just got my CDL we still use the system where you could get the different types of pre-trip and not just having to do the whole truck
After watching further into the video everything is different from how I tested
Keep up the good work
Thank you
Thank you 🙏 !!!
Great video
Hi, i hope you read this .
This is got to be the best video out there, very professional and to the point.
Thank you so much.
I passed my test few months ago. I have my license.
My question, once I apply to a company and go for orientation, am i gonna have to do an EXTENSIVE pre-trip inspection again ? or it doesn't need to be so thorough --i live in California ( don't know if its different here)
Lastly , at my school we learned on a stick shift truck.
I've never driven an automatic, I'm not shure about putting truck in neutral, low speeds, high speeds ,etc.
....if the company only has automatics, would that discualify me?
Again , awesome video! Thank You So Much. 👍👍👍
I am a technician at Scania dealer and my check-list is almost identical, but divided as obligatory safety items, reliability (all systems) and resale value (exterior cosmetical dings, dents and scratches). It takes 20 - 60 min to make, depending on the type of truck (off the road, urban, highway).
Many drivers only check tires. None check is required in the license test.
love the video.... soooo are we not looking at the slack ajustment any more? Like that was a big thing not a couple of years ago
That is good indeed✌
Im going to watch this 100 times this week. But i think i have it down now
thank you what you do nothing but respect , how about rear end inspection?
Also, if you have the time, would you mind showing us how to fill out a log book Properly
this is a lot to remember...
Yes sir, I do believe I complained about the wind on the last video which shame on me because you really got me through it on the last video. Alright enough shaming me, your first video (as I said) Completely helped me. On another note, ALL examiners are a little different but keep in mind in general know your truck. My examiner pointed out details that I didn’t cover however, the examiner pointed it out and was just seeing if I can point out what I missed.
Great video!
Thank you! They gave us a sheet from Netts and my God it seemed like i could not grasp for some reason. Now this is so simple and i’m going by your video for my pretrip…… So everything you said here is the actual pretrip right?
it seems like the some of the right turn signals light does not work 😜, Great video !
Thank You! What are the 67 checklist to pass the test?
GA still have A-B-C or F is everything!
Then in cab and brake test !some miner things changed but still you have to mention everything with extra words!like
PMS
Properly mounted, and secure
NCBB
Not cracked, bent or broken
NMH
Not missing hardware
ABCDF
No Abrasions, bulges, cuts, dry rods, or freight
DOG
No debris oil grease or ice for steps and cat walk.
Not leaking for what ever lines that holds air or fuel or water.
Plus you have to mention all the clamps, bushings, washers and nuts and bolts and seals.they give you 2 hours for pri trips, incab, air, parking and driving but of course you have to pass pri trip before going to incab and brakes then if u pass those u do parking and if you pass then last is road.
Thanks for your video!I basically passed by watching ur 8 years ago video and I’m going again this week for taking off my stick shift restriction .
Also GA is not S A L E only
A is applying that u cant loose 4 PSI in 60 sec
L low warning and buzzer at 60 psi
E emergency brakes pop out 20 to 45 psi.then is a thug test.
👍TK U so much
❤
My test is this Friday does.it matter if I start with the exterior first or.interior
I love this video and it’s very detailed, but am I the only person that noticed he didn’t do a pre-trip on the other side of the engine ????? He just did the three oils. The video didn’t include the alternator water pump and air compressor.
The static part is not on NJ or PA cdl manual. Are you sure it’s still there I think they’re doing the latest version
Best way to see what my state requires? I will test in a peterbuilt 2 axel with air brakes but will be pulling a horse trailer with drum brakes I am in California. Thank you
Will this pretrip work in Pennsylvania?
I go to a school right now and they make learning the pre trip so hard they be all over the place I'm thinking about just studying from this. Will this help me pass the ca driver test for class A?
I just failed my test today using your incab inspection thanks a lot
Your state probably isn’t going by the new model like he stated in the beginning.
you have to go to his old video if your state doesn't have the new one. that video is 9 years old & your state probably uses that one
I'm looking for recommendations on CDL schools
Who is the best to go with?
In Washington State
Anyone know if Virginia is this one or the older one? I start school Saturday and trying to get ahead of it
Trucks haven’t changed much but your beard has 😃
Interesting and very detailed. May I ask if you can share me for some Pre-Trip manual for me to start learning? I'm planning to study at your school. Thank you sir.
Do you have an academy in the state of Pennsylvania thank you
Was the truck you were using and automatic?
What's the 3 piece steering system? Reference video @ 27 minutes. Is it the pitman arm, drag link, and steering arm? TIA
Yes, you are not required on the test to name the parts individually though
Very informative and professional. Thank you
Do you know if Missouri is using the new pre-trip?
is texas included in this new pre trip inspection? or still on the old one
Can i get my CDL through online and then could move to US and being employed in trucking company ???
Does anyone know what model year Freightliner this is? The one at my school is a 2006 Freightliner. Does the year matter?
googd video you just missed lighting indicators, rear of trailer and safety equipment
Three peice steering? Is that the pitman arm?
Good❤❤❤❤❤
Do you happen to know if texas has the updated model?
Not yet. I passed mine about a month ago, and they still use the old model, aka everything.
@@betterdeadthanred839 ok. Well turns out I’ll be testing in Springfield MO. With Prime So im not sure about there either lmao.
Is this the same as the California one
I noticed during the new pre trip law you didn’t mention anything about air break parts like.. slack adjuster, push rod, air chamber etc.. so non of this is on the pre trip now? I will be going to school to take my CDL in the near future and Illinois I act like I know what I’m talking about but that is come along with a lot of research and watching videos of pre-trips in the past I will find out if Illinois did adopt the new pre-trip law, it definitely seems a lot easier to pass. I’m really surprised they don’t require you to check the rear bumper DOT tape or some of the other previous free trip modules.
This is correct. If your state is using the new 2022 test model, those things are not included.
In GA you have to mention everything with the right verbiage. even if you don’t use the right verbiage, they will fail you.
Good luck on test!
Also in RUclips you can search GA DDS CDL test that way you can see how they do it!
By "new testing model" do you mean the ELDT program? So if the state has ELDT requirements now then it's on the new model?
Also... @9:48 the right turn signal is not correctly functioning...one of the lights is out, you can see the indicator blinking faster and yet front and rear passed :p
It is a new format for testing, instead of form A B C, it is now the whole truck minus the drive axles.
Can i use this if im taking my test in California?
