I had to declutter my house before putting it up for sale. I wound up getting rid of 150 t-shirts/polo shirts and over 100 dress shirts that I never wore. The shirts were sitting on shelves and hanging in closets in 2 bedrooms that I never used. I was totally blown away
Also, if you are decluttering, consider if the object you are thinking of donating is useable or can bring joy to some other person. I volunteer at a thrift store charity and honestly some of the things brought in is really junk or dangerous and should be tossed. Nobody wants or needs dangerous and worn out crap!😮
Yes, it's really a shame when people donate broken, dangerous items. It's important to be mindful of what we're giving away. Jill runs a food pantry and it's revolting some of the "food" that people bring in... THX for watching!
I recently had to clean out 26 years of clutter in my basement to make way for a new furnace. That was a job. I felt so good about myself afterwards though. That lead to cleaning out other rooms in my small house. It makes me feel so much better to have a cleaner house with a lot less clutter. This time, I kept mainly gardening things in the basement. I figure I can always clean out more as time goes on when I realize what I really don't use. And most importantly, I try to stay out of stores including online. When I do have a good coupon, I tell myself just because I have a coupon doesn't mean I have to use it.
I don’t know. I got rid of this plastic tray thing and a month later, I realized I needed it. Ugh. I figure, as long as I have space for it and my spaces are organized, I will keep it. The whole “bring joy” thing is silly. If I got rid of things that didn’t bring me JOY, my house would be empty. Some things are just practical but don’t necessarily bring us joy. lol
Every time I get rid of anything that is worn out, broken or no longer used I always say to it "Thank you for your service." I don't feel so bad about saying goodbye to it after that! 😁😁
I have all these hints down. What I was hoping this video would do is to tell us how to get rid of these items. What happened to the old typewriter? What happens to the cables for old devices? Can you throw them in the garbage? That’s the kind of information I need. Thank you!
I had several garage sales. When I got tired of that but still found things to get rid of I threw away the worthless items and took the rest to the Salvation Army store. They always are so happy to get nice items. I still find more after years of decluttering and moving into a tiny apt so it all goes to the Salvation Army.
@ What about throwing away toxic items? Batteries and some of these electronics. Are you supposed to throw those away? And what to do with perfectly fine sheets that the thrift stores don’t except? That’s what I’m asking about
Every week i throw one thing out from the house and one from the garage. I set a reminder in outlook to keep doing this. My rule is if I have not used it in a year, it's gone.
My husband passed away in the summer. I've actually found decluttering most theraputic, it gives me a sense of life starting to move forwards again even if it's just one small item at a time. I also needed a new boiler and had to clear out the big walk in cupboard off the dining room to access pipework. There was stuff on the back shelves that I'd completely forgotten about, like my late FIL's wedding crystal glasses and decanters etc. So what I did was get rid of all the cheap, mismatched daily glassware and started using 70 year old Edinburgh Crystal lead crystal glasses, in Star of Edinburgh pattern. It's worth buttons nowadays but it's still very beautiful, a treat to drink from and it takes no more space on the shelves as the cheap stuff. I'll never use the decanters for spirits but they're heavy enough to fracture an intruder's skull if necessary as well as sparking a lot of joy for their beauty. The massive trifle bowl now holds my bananas. If you've got beautiful old items stored away "For Best" then now is the time to start using and enjoying them. Get rid of the boring day to day items instead.
I still keep certain photos going back decades, have purged many of them when moving to retirement community. Some went to sibling to pass on to sons. Husband has others on thumb drive and in the cloud.
I keep what i NEED to use every day but don't keep what i WANT. My house is almost empty, but my neighbor old man next door still keeping so many AT&T phone bills from decade 90s 🤣🤣
Great video, thank you! I really need to declutter, but struggle to do it. I can't imagine how much freedom and peace it would bring me though. Hope to at least start some of it soon. ❤
Start with just ten minutes. Pick a small area - one drawer, shelf or surface. Set a timer for 10 mins and remove obvious rubbish, and items to recycle or donate. Don't leave the area until the timer goes off. Put rubbish in the bin, recycling in the recycling bin or bag, and put items for donation in your car. Remember, that decluttered items turn back into clutter if they don't leave your home within a day or two. Finally, clean the decluttered area and put back the things you've decided to keep. Stand back, admire and celebrate your win.
Preserving by going digital - technology has been advancing so quickly it is almost alarming to me. VHS to Cassettes to DVD and we are told the old systems won’t hold up so you need to upgrade and now we’re told we need to save everything in the “cloud” but then that costs $$$. It gives me some anxiety… I have slowly gone through “stuff” but I leave my husband’s stuff alone. He appreciates that. I have also found when I can’t make a definite Keep or Donate(maybe because it’s a sentimental item) I can put the item in a box and set it aside. Down the road I will revisit it again and may be able to let it go without difficulty. Good post. Appreciate you mentioning all the writers and their books so people can go to the library and borrow it. If they like it well enough they can get their own copy. 👍🏻
Great video! I have WAY too much holiday decor for our now-downsized home. This year, as I brought out each season’s tubs, I did a hard purge and have found that I truly enjoy looking at each and every thing I have put out. I still have too much Halloween, though. I’ll work on it more next fall.
Here’s what I do. I gather a few things that I might want to get rid of. Then I put them in the room next to the garage. Then I put them on a table in garage. On a nice day I go out and I gather a few boxes. Then I put them in the car on the way to the grocery store. I then drop them off at the thrift store. I seem to get momentum doing it this way. Hope this helps.
I decided to not try and keep containers to take food to parties and just bake cookies or batter breads because those can be wrapped and carried in a bag then served on small paper plates that are easy to store or will already be at the party.
Unless it's a safety/health hazard, never touch other people's stuff without their permission. It's totally disrespectful and we would not be happy if someone did that to us. Crossing that energetic boundary assumes an entitlement on our part. Deal with your own crap, don't nag and others will frequently follow suit. If that doesn't work, sometimes you just have to tell them that you can't do it without their input. This is predicated on the other person also wanting to clear things out. If they just plain don't want to and you do, then it's time to talk about territories and allocating space. Let them know that you are having difficulties functioning with the way things are, it's causing you stress and you would like to find a solution that works for both parties. Compromise is necessary if you live in a house where the other person does not have the same goals as you do. It can be very difficult but if you want to keep the peace, it's necessary. Sometimes you just have to identify the issue that is keeping people stuck. They will SAY they want to de-clutter and clean but nothing ever comes of it. At that point you need to politely ask them what is the issue that's stopping them from moving forward and then help them see a way clear. In sales they call it "overcoming objections." There is always a way to make progress, but it is never getting rid of other peoples stuff without asking them. The bad feelings and resentment created would defeat the purpose of clearing space and creating a peaceful, harmonious atmosphere with less stuff.
Deciding to get rid of something is only part of the problem. How to get rid of it is a huge problem. People who throw everything in the trash are nuts. It's ethically irresponsible, but responsible ways of getting rid of stuff are difficult. In many places, you can't put everything in the trash; municipalities won't take it all. Can you take it to the dump yourself? Maybe. Junk haulers can be very expensive. One group not to hire is "Got Junk?" That company is a massive rip-off.
