Just been watching you do a deep clean on your filter and noticed you washing your foams with a hose, in the UK tap water has chlorine added, if thats the case in the US you have just wiped out your bacteria colony, it may be you are using rain or pond water from that hose, in that case I'll mind my own business LOL.

We have well water which is not chemically treated. It won’t harm bacteria colonies. If I had city water it would contain chlorine and would negatively impact the bacteria. I should have noted that in the video lol. I’ve had several comments regarding that.

Thank you. That’s the best filter we have ever had. It does a fantastic job. We added the Oase Biosmart 5,000 to our smaller pond this spring. It’s also doing an amazing job.

We purchased this same filter last month for our large fish pond which is about 5,500 gallons.
It worked great the first week or so but our Phoenix, Arizona sun has just been baking the pond and made the algae much worse. This filter has been putting out green water.
Today I went outside to see our pond was a little low on water and when I looked, the filter was completely overflowing with pond water. Thank goodnessI I checked or could have had a much worse situation.
Turned it off and decided to do the deep cleaning like you did in this video.
Put it all back together and hasn't overflowed and not sure still why it did it in the first place.
Just looked outside and noticed a small leak dripping down the corner from where the input hose comes in. We have quite a few white bubbles forming there for some reason but think its just the bubbles collecting and hitting up against the top of the lid and coming down. Hopefully that's all it is.

Em Dee we haven’t had that issue with this filter but you could try adding UV clarifier. We needed that with our previous filtration system. Seemed to help reduce algae growth. Also try increasing pond plants at all levels but especially surface area such as water lilies, water lettuce or hyacinth to reduce the amount of surface area exposed to the sun, increase natural filtration and reduce available nutrients in pond that algae need to thrive. You could also add shade canopy/sun sails over your pond. I haven’t used one but I believe they come in different thickness to allow for your whichever setting you prefer: part sun, part shade, shade.....My other recommendation is to make sure your lines haven’t developed a plug effecting your water flow. We had that frequently with our previous system. And also make sure your filter is still level. They can settle unevenly. Sadly you might need to clean it out more frequently if it’s getting to where it won’t filter properly due to the amount of Debris it has collected. We had to clean our previous system daily to keep it working optimally. That was a big reason we upgraded. Our pond is only 1,5000 gallons but we have a heavy wildlife load. So we upgraded to this 10,000 gallon filter. I hope the deep clean out fixes your issues.

Thanks so much. I have the 5000 model with the 18w UV filter that just arrived today. Does your drainage hose directly screw onto the unit? For mine the threading seems to be different. Also, how often do you have to clean the filters now that it’s all clean? I hope to be able to go on vacation for a week and not have my neighbor clean it. Finally, what size tubing are you using from the pump? Thanks 😊🙏

We also have the 5,000 as well. We did a video on that this year. For the inlet from the pump to the filter we used rubber tubing and attached that with hose clamps. For the outlet we used 2” rubber elbow and attached that with a hose clamp too. At first we had to clean it once a week for 2-3 weeks. Once it was clean, we only had to clean it out about once a month. And we have a very high wildlife load. The filter is amazing and does an incredible job.

Wow. Thanks so much! That was so kind of you to make these videos and respond. For the output back into the pond did you use the gasket and adapter they provide? I’ve tried that with a 3” fernco fitting on top of it but their gasket and adapter don’t stay on the unit well and I’m afraid an animal or storm could cause it to come off. If you didn’t use their adapter, Is that where you put the 2” elbow? I’d be surprised if that fit. Without their adapter that opening is 2 3/4”. Thanks again!

You are so right! That was a typing error on my part. I meant to hit 3 and got 2. Sorry! I did use the 3” rubber elbow that came with clamps . I did not use anything else for the output. It is a sturdy connection.

How many gallons is your pond and how many koi do you have? Our pond is about 2,250g and we have 11 koi. Do you still like it and is it still working good for you? How often do you clean it? Looking into getting this for my pond.

It’s approx 1,500 gallons. We still love this filter. It continues to work great for us. We added the 5,000 filter to our small pond last year and that’s doing a great job too. We have 4 large koi, at least 15 goldfish -all different varieties, multiple turtles and frogs. We have a big wildlife load and we clean it out approximately every 4-6 weeks during the summer months. This is the only filter we have had over the years that has kept our water clear. We can see all the way to the bottom. We don’t have to add chemicals or UV lights either.

Hi, I am setting up a 1000 gallon koi pond and thinking of getting the same oase biosmart filter. Do you think I should buy the Oase 5000 or 10,000 filter? Would the 10,000 be too much filtration for my pond. Also, Does having a bigger filter result in less maintenance on my part? Please advise. Thanks.

    • @majesticgardener5862
      @majesticgardener5862  3 года назад +2

It would depend on your wildlife load. We have a large wildlife population: Koi, goldfish, turtles, frogs, crawfish in our approximately 1,000 gallon and our 1,500 gallon. In our small pond, we put in the 5,000 this spring. Our larger pond has the 10,000. Our experience has been that we clean the smaller filter more frequently. We clean that one out every 3-4 weeks. We can go longer between clean outs in our larger pond. So yes, we have less maintenance with our larger filter. But with that being said, we have far less maintenance and much better water clarity now than we ever had with a canister style system. We no longer need UV lights that we used in both ponds prior to using this filter. We also don’t have to use any chemicals to help with clarity issues.

one question how long do the filter sponge last before you need to replace them and how expensive are they when you replace them all ? I am thinking about buy one this week, building a Woodend above ground pond this week about 800 gallon Length is 8' x 4' 4' deep. I have only 2 koi

    • @majesticgardener5862

I’m not sure how long the filters last. I wasn’t able to find that information and we have only had ours since this summer. But there are 3 different sponge filters (blue, green and red) Each is available from the manufacturer for $16.99. It’s a great filter. Best we have ever owned. We have a large wildlife load... 20 goldfish, 2 koi and several turtles. Our pond is about 1,500 gallons and it remains crystal clear with this filter.

@@shahnawazvlog6266 They are very hard to outsmart. Our pond is an inground pond. We found what works best for us is to create shelter areas within the pond. For instance, We left large openings behind our waterfalls that they can go into when predators come. The openings are only large enough for fish. In the deep end we built natural rock caves for them to go into as well. This helps with the Herons too. I have seen others use large PVC pipe on the bottom of their ponds which would do the same thing. It just doesn’t look as nice

Check for a kink in the discharge hose. If not, see if you have debris stuck in the hose or in the drain outlet. You may have to remove the sponge filters and do a deep clean of the filters and filter box. There is likely to be debris in the system causing it to slowly drain. Hope this helps.

Yes. If my calculations using the metric system are correct 😂 that is slightly more than 2,000 gallons. You might be able to do a smaller filter if you plan on having a light fish load. Just a word of advice, you might consider creating a deeper pond. Your future desires might change. If you decide down the road that you want koi for instance, they require 3’ where I live to overwinter in the snow and cold temps here. If you’re in a hotter zone, shallower water will cause the temp of your pond to rise. On a side note, we were visited by the dreaded blue heron this year. Not sure if you have them where you live, but He greatly reduced my fish population while I was away on vacation. If your pond is 3-4’ deep you’re less likely to have issues with them in your pond. The layout of your sides- entry points also effect your ponds susceptibility to predators. Just a thought.

@@majesticgardener5862 thank you for the advice. Slightly less than half of the pond is 3'. I will ask the digger to make it 4' for a certain limited area. I can not ask it right away because then i'm afraid of the stability of the slopes. The deeper the pond the steeper the wall slope, hence risk of increased land slide.🙄 The hole is mostly clay with no retaining structure. The climate where the pond situated is on the extremes. Summers like arizona and winters like alaska. Elevation is 1250m. I am really excited. Anyways i will order the oase biosmart set 14000 and see what happens. if not adequate i will augment it with something else. Thanks again.
