My mom and her boyfriend went to a Boston concert then stopped at the pizza place he owned to make themselves a pizza. It was closed, but when they were getting ready to leave, Boston pulled up in the parking lot and asked if they could get some pizza!! Of course the answer was yes, so Mom made them pizza and smoked a joint with them. They gave her a t-shirt and belt buckle, which she wore every day after that! She said they were really cool and had some good smoke!!

You are confusing Bee Gees falsetto singing (they were masters of it) with Brad Delp's incredible vocal range as a singer. His voice was not auto-tuned and according to Rick Beato, he hits a high D over C I believe. He isolated the voice track and it is incredible.

I had difficulty making that connection as well, but I think it might be easier to see it if we had more limited exposure to these classics. For example, I have heard people confuse the music of Bach and Mozart because what they hear is classical music and put it with a name that is more familiar to them. You can hear the distinction better as you get more familiar with each. That will happen with AR as he proceeds down this path (assuming he continues).

1976. College was a difficult time. Four hours on the bus back and forth, five days a week. My cousin lent me the album of Boston. Blew me away first listen. I played the whole album everyday after school. The music just took me far away from the difficulties of each day. My younger brother had a garage band. I borrowed his guitar and taught myself to play More Than A Feeling. I never did return the album to my cousin as I wore out the record. Had to buy two new albums, one for him and one I took with me when I moved to Canada in 1979. My first ever concert in Vancouver was BOSTON! There they were, my childhood heroes! I was a teenager again. More Than A Feeling remains my first love. It is now bittersweet , as I met my ‘Marianne’ a few years later. I regret to this day that I let her ‘walk away’.

So, about the only thing they had in common with Boston was they sang a song titled "Massachusetts." Anyway, Boston's debut album was recorded in Tom Sholz's basement. Another bit of trivia is that Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson is married to the late Drummer Sib Hashian’s Daughter and has two children with her.

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 17 дней назад

@dennisthigpen5614 Not quite. First off as documented in the liner notes of every copy of this record that has been sold, Sib plays drums on every song on the record but one. Jim Masdea plays drums on the remaining song which happens to be Rock and Roll Band. All of Brads vocals except for one song were recorded by Bo;ylan at Capital Studios. Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home and he co wrote Smokin'. The entire song Let Me Take You Home was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Brad sang on multiple demos for Tom and Brads voice was on the demo that got Epics attention and that was given to Boylan. When Epic signed "Boston" they saw Brads voice as an essential part of the Boston sound and that is why Epic signed both Tom and Brad as "Boston" before the tracks that went on this record were recorded. Brad was not some kind of last minute addition. In the liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut record, Tom albeit 30 years m after the fact gives Brad credit for all of the arrangement work that he did on the songs on this record.

This is actually called corporate rock, of the mid to late 70s. Their first album is stunning with every song a hit. Not a stinker on it. I last saw them live in the early 2000s. Their corporate rock association comes from the concert production. That last concert was awesome with confetti bombs, pyrotechnics, lasers. But the opening was amazing. The arena went dark, then there was smoke lit from behind. From the ceiling of the stage, the spaceship on the album cover was lowered to hang over the band. Corporate rock refers to band concert promotion. They put on a hell of a show!
Brad Delp, has stunning vocals. He committed suicide in 2007. Very sad. The note he left… “I Am A Lonely Soul”. Sib Hashian, great drummer and an Afro to die for, passed away on stage of a heart attack in 2017. RIP to both.

LOTS of background. Although this appears to be live, it's the album playing with a bunch of musos acting along.
For the album, Tom Shultz (who, amongst other skills, was an electronics engineer who invented the Rockman range of guitar sound effects devices) played everything except drums and singing. He managed to sign a record deal and had to rapidly put together a band!

@stevenothingspecial The reasons why this record sounds like it does have very little to do with how it was mixed. One of the reasons why this record sounds so clean and smooth is that when Tom multi tracked the guitars, he was able to use sophisticated analyzers that he was able to use at Polaroid to make sure that the eq response curve was the same and that the phase of the guitar signals remained the same from overdub to overdub. That is painstaking attention to detail that takes a lot of time.

This song is often described as being PERFECT and since it took seven years to create maybe it is. At the time people like Elvis Costello disdained it as commonplace or mundane but its reputation has only grown over the years since its release.⚛❤

Man, I wish they didnt have the shortened radio edit as the “official” video. At least it still has the two high notes

This version is missing the second verse, second chorus, and transition sections, about a minute and a half missing.

Yes, he actually sang those incredible notes that blended into the guitars. Incredible. Yeah, so this is just rock music. Every single song in this album is superb. The album is the most successful debut album ever. Do you want your head blown off? Foreplay/ Longtime LOUD!

Bee Gees??!!! I can’t believe you compared Boston to the Bee Gees!! 🤣🤣
And specifically, that you heard elements of “Stayin’ Alive” in “More Than A Feeling!! How??!! 🤣🤣

That other group you were trying to think of, should have reminded you of these guys. They were the pioneers. Their debut album was arguably the best selling debut album ever. It was recorded in Tom Scholz basement studio with just Tom Scholz on all instruments except drums, Brad Delp and a friend that played drums. Tom did all the backup vocals as well.

@PAT8888-is2pd Tom does not sing a single note on this record and the record is far better off for that fact. All vocals both lead and back up vocals were sang by Brad Delp and they were recorded by John Boylan in big name LA studios

Back then it was just Rock (or Rock n Roll). The Rock and Disco crowd (like the Bee Gees) were not exactly . . . friendly. They weren't at odds, but in my school there was a definite "disco isn't real music" movement. Disco got played in clubs, country got played down south, and rock was everywhere else. (We ignored Big Band and waltz music - hold outs from the grandparents.)

The video used the shorter 7" single / radio edit of the song. The full album version contains an extra verse.

First, your Bee Gees comparison is hilarious, I'm going to take it as charming that you'd make such an amazing mistake, i.e., Boston is Hard Rock music; the Bee Gees are Disco music - Hard Rock fans and Disco fans were not friends in the 70's and probably still aren't. You couldn't possibly make a more offensive comparison. So it's funny and cute. NOW. Secondly, though, what you call the "classic fade-out" has a purpose. A radio purpose. There are songs that have what is called a "cold ending." Those songs are moderately difficult for radio jocks to play because they have to be very ready when it's time to segue to the next song. A fade ending is easy. So bands would commonly fade their ending because...more chance of getting played on the radio.
