I completely agree!! I was listening to the soundtrack on Spotify and it got to what would be around 1:37 in this video and I was CACKLING ITS SO PASSIVE-AGGRESIVE 😂
but the acting here also helps - the passive aggressiveness and meg's insincere warmth was not very obvious in the australian production, which made it a bit more shocking when meg and her mom were revealed to hate christine here in this production, meg very obviously rolls her eyes in annoyance at christine HAHA very effective
I love how Meg is the whole reason Christine shared her voice with the world to begin with, and now Meg is jealous of the fame Christine has and then attention she captured from Phantom.
I love how Madame Giry is all like "he who pays the bills" like NO "he who put his family in thousands of dollars in debt and is now a child neglecting raging alcoholic"
Though i love the cast, im really disappointed with the stage design. It seems zuch a downgrade from the australian version where everything looked more extravagant, and it really looked like you were in another place.☹
Andi Alberto: The London version was not a downgrade, it was more a dress rehearsal. The Australian version came later, and, with it, came many upgrades, including improvements on the song Dear Old Friends.
@@corvusdelicti8853 ooooh i actually thought that the australian cast came first!😅 thanks for telling me! I appreciate the london production a lot more now!
I like this so much better than the Australian one, the passive aggressiveness of the Giry's and Raoul and Christine being totally oblivious 😂 I'm kind of shocked that the Raoul that played with Sierra for Phantom actually ended up in the Australian production instead.
I just noticed in 3:12 Christine pushes Madam Giry’s hand away from her, then continues to refrain from touching her even though she has no problem with touching anyone else. Weird detail since Madam Giry kinda raised her, and they didn’t end on a bad note in POTO?
I love this version of the song...you can *hear* the daggers in their words. Yes, everything is very polite and restrained...but you can feel the tension and animosity. I agree with @SereneGohSH: this interpretation makes the ending make much more sense than the Australian version does.
Rainier Flores Yep, like in this version Christine says “You look sublime” while Meg says “You look the same” while it’s the other way around in the Australian
Chris yeah I noticed that in this version Meg *SPOILERS* seems to purposely shoot Christine, while I’m the Australian version it looks very much like an accident caused by the Phantom reaches for the gun.
Anna O'Byrne has a beautiful, stunning voice but her acting skills are not that great. I didn't felt the emotion needed in her performance. Sierra have it all, she is just brilliant!!!
i wonder how long it will take for everyone to realize this was a play not a huge movie production and secondly this isnt a different version of the original this is continuing after the fire ..... its 10 years later soooo yuh characters wont stay the same just saying also Happy Halloween :)
The interesting thing about this song is how it showcases how both Christine and Meg have changed over the past 10 years…and how they are both completely miserable but trying to hide it from each other. Christine may look ‘Regal as a Queen’ but she is trapped in a failing marriage separated from music which she loves. And Meg might be a ‘Star’ but she’s a star of a vaudeville show trying to get the attention of a Man who will never want her. I also find it funny how Christine is the only one in this song who actually seems sincere like she’s not trying to ruin it for Meg, she’s just trying to appease the Phantom so she can go home (with some money). Later on we know she does it because she wants to sing for him, but her attention was never to steal the spotlight from Meg…but Meg has been so beaten down at this point and is just so desperate for some recognition from Erik she sees the writing on the wall right away and then the jealousy sets in.
the song is good the harmonies are great BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE NOT THE CHARACTERS! if you link this to phantom of the opera, you need to at least mantain the character development that started there. Or maybe explain??????????? Like when did meg started hating Christine??????????? because of jealousy?????????? oh andrew what did you do
* SouthernStar I will definitely give it a try. I also looked up the German version of the show and it looks beautiful! Rachel Anne More is my second favorite Christine and shes in that too! I mean there were so many changes in the original one, and then the Australian one... I feel that even ten years later, if it still hits the broadway theaters it will be different from what we’ve seen
@@larissaprates1384 oh it already came through america, I saw it in rhode island and it was good though "beauty underneath" was changed entirely. But yes the whole things with meg (that was mostly cut from the play but is important to know) that for 10 years the whole reason phantom got phantasma and was able to grow so big so fast was because Meg was sleeping with the press, cops and tax men. She literally gave her body blood and soul to phantom and grew to love and respect him, not caring about his face. But he never once SAW her. Which is why when he sings to her at the end she so easily stops freaking out and listens to him. She loves him, she just wants attention and recognition then christine comes back and ruins everything. It literally broke her. It's not just jealousy, it's self hatred and abandonment.
daecromancer ahhh this enlightens everything else! At the end she mentions something about all the man, but I didn’t know it was in that magnitude. Do they explain it better in the us tour? And what changed in beauty underneath?
@@larissaprates1384 unfortunately they didnt explain it better in the u.s tour. It was a much better known plot point in the original london script. In one of the original cast recorded songs you hear madame giry say something like "there is a man looking for you, a mister- *name i forget*" and meg looks up and says "is he important?" Cuz in the original london recording what shes done is more apparent but it also requires reading subtext. Well in the u.s beauty underneath, id just look it up to listen to the song. The stage setting, the singing, and the acting of all of them compare with the Austrian version. This video is a very poor performance. It looks like a production from a high school performance. I can not believe it is from the London West End cast.
This is the most passive-aggressive song I've ever heard.
Ahahahha yes 😂😂

Gino Sanchez One of the first passive-aggressive songs for theatre would have to be Mozart’s ‘Via resti servita’ from THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO.
Hahahaha This comment made me laugh LOL

Christine: "You are a star"
Meg: "And you are... wife"

Anyone else notice the way Raoul looked at Meg? Up and down, stared at her chest with a grin. It’s hard to believe that he changed that much.
Honestly the costume for the London version were pretty amazing imo, they didn’t really have to change it. The only crime here is the set.
@Meg Giry oh hi Meg.... U ok? How's everything...? And where are you after, you know, what happened?
This stage design looks like a high school production 😳
That’s probably because there are so many different sets in this show, so they don’t pay as much attention to the more minor scenes.

This version of Meg is taller than Christine! (my perception of Meg is that she's very short and petite for some reason)...
Janet Chan same here
