For those having trouble, make sure that after you select a close loop you make sure that the loop end points are in the same place by dragging the green points that appear onto the same location
Every time I try to do this, it says the loft can't be completed because it's self-intersection. I just can't get it to work when there's an adjacent edge. Any thoughts?

Did you right click and choose "selection manager" -> "closed loop"? @5:40 I had the same problem and it solved it for me
