Great question! You are correct. Looking back at it now, the book doesn't tell us that dimension. For my classes, I would just check to see if they knew how to create the spotface and use their best judgment on the depth. Out in the workforce, we would need to create an RFI (request for information) and send it to the company that created the drawing so as not to manufacture it incorrectly.
